DELAWARE ENDURO RIDERS FIRST HARE SCRAMBLESSUNDAY ONLY OCTOBER 25TH ON THE C&D CANAL PROPERTY

THE COURSE features all newly cut trails featuring the only phragmitis sections in the world. The Course is fast, fun and friendly, an absolute joy to ride. There is no need for bark busters or hand guards. The start will be on a large grass fi eld with a ¼ mile run to the trails, all of which have been cut and manicured with a tractor and brush-hog.

THE PEEWEE AND YOUTH events both start at 9:00 AM on Sunday with separate courses, same scoring location and same pit area. The PeeWee event will run for one hour and Youth will run for 1.5 hours. The courses are all wide trails with no motocross track. Don’t miss this event! This is a true Hare Scrambles Course to determine who are the best riders in their respective classes.

THE C-CLASS event starts at 11:00 AM and will run on the 6-mile Youth course for 1.5 hours. Masters, Golden Masters and women will run this event.

THE EVENT FOR A AND B CLASSES starts at 1:30 PM and will use the 6-mile youth course plus the 3-mile mini course and another 2.0 miles of extra special terrain thrown in for good measure and bench racing purposes. These courses are utilized once a year, so they are not beaten up.

Round 10 of the 2009 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championships kicked off at the famed Budds Creek Motocross Park in Budds Creek, Md., and it sure played an important part in the series. A good crowd was on hand to catch the world’s fastest motocross stars of today do battle on southern Maryland’s prestigious motocross track, which has hosted previous U.S. Grand Prix rounds and the Motocross of Nations in September 2007. This year’s national proved to be an exciting one with great racing and crazy weather. Let’s see how the motos went down on Saturday.

450 ClassAs the first 450 moto went around the first corner, Team Honda/Red Bull’s Davi Millsaps was in control with the holeshot followed by MotoConcepts/Honda riders Tyler Bowers and Jeff Alessi. Joe Gibbs Racing’s Cody Cooper got his best start of the year and followed closely behind Alessi for the battle for second while Bowers slipped back through the pack. But

a hard charging Chad Reed on his Rockstar/Makita Suzuki RMZ450 was on the move after an outside-the-top-10 start as he quickly went by Cooper and Alessi for second before the halfway point of the moto. However, Millsaps grew his lead to over 30 seconds until Reed moved into second. For the rest of the moto, Reed chipped away Millsaps’ lead ever so slowly. While Reed was making up time, fellow Aussie Jake Moss, who debuted his Monster Energy/Kawasaki factory ride at Budds Creek, rode very well in the top before his bike literally went up in smoke, and after a freak

crash going up the old finish line hill, Moss was left with a DNF for moto 1. Valli M o t o r s p o r t s Yamaha rider Kyle Regal, who was fresh from the Loretta Lynn’s dude ranch a few weeks prior, was putting on a Reed-like moto, coming through the pack passing riders like Andrew Short and Ivan Tedesco on his privateer Yamaha 450. Toward moto’s end, Reed caught up

on the back wheel of Millsaps’ on the white flag lap but

never would get around, allowing Millsaps to get his first moto win of the season. For Millsaps, this was a big confidence boost after an already rough year that ranged from injuries on the track to personal problems off the track. Chad Reed took second as new Yamaha recruited rider Matt Goerke rode to his then-best moto finish with a third place. Regal was fourth, and Team Honda/Red Bull’s Ivan Tedesco was fifth.

Moto 2 saw the skies start to cloud up and light rain started to fall on the Budds Creek facility. Honda/Red Bull’s Ivan Tedesco took the early lead and would hold that lead for much of the moto. But once again, Chad Reed, coming back from a slightly better but not great start in moto 2, put on another charge to front that saw him right behind Tedesco before the halfway point. Canidae/Kawasaki rider Tommy Hahn had a much better start in moto 2 after his 12th-place finish in moto 1 and ran behind Tedesco before getting by him for second. At the checkers, it was Reed with the win, the overall, and his first ever 450 outdoor championship. Reed locked up the 450 title with two rounds still left to go. 450 Class Overall Results: 1: Chad Reed (2-1)2: David Millsaps (1-6)3: Ivan Tedesco (5-3)4: Kyle Regal (4-4)5: Thomas Hahn (12-2)6: Michael Byrne (6-5)7: Tim Ferry (9-8)8: Andrew Short (7-10)9: Matt Goerke (3-27)10: Jimmy Albertson (11-12)

250 ClassMuscle Milks/MDK/KTM rider Ryan Sipes and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer lead the 250 class out of the first turn in moto 1. During the first lap, Sipes slipped backward after going backward in an uphill S-turn section that saw riders like Tommy

Searle, Ryan Dungey, and Blake Wharton get by. Weimer, who was in the lead during this time, was later under pressure from his teammate Christophe Pourcel, the 250 class points leader. Behind Pourcel was Dungey and Geico Powersports/Honda rider Justin Barcia. As Barcia stayed back in fourth, the top three of Weimer, Pourcel, and Dungey put on a strong three-way battle for the top spot. Pourcel would get around Weimer for the lead as Dungey sat in third looking to move up. As the checkers flew, Pourcel grabbed the moto win, and Weimer would hold off Dungey for second in moto 2. Dungey was third. Barcia was fourth. Star Racing/Yamaha’s Darryn Durham finished his season best fifth in moto 1.

Moto 2 saw an entirely different moto as the skies got even darker than the second 450 moto, and then the clouds opened up and dumped rain all over the Budds Creek MX Park. After a 30-second board miscommunication, the moto was restarted with

everyone mudded up. After the restart, the rain started to fall even harder, and Jake Weimer was

Maryland’s Stephen Stella made it into the 250 class and fi nished out 30-36 for

37th overall at Budds Creek.

once again up in front with Tommy Searle and privateer Jimmy Decotis not far behind. The rain would just keep getting worse and worse throughout the moto, eventually shortening the moto by five to six minutes due to the threatening track conditions that included flooding all over the track. Even Budds Creek’s pond in the middle of the track grew to lake status after the moto. The riders were seen, or well, not seen really, as they were dodging or simply racing through ponds littered all over the track. At moto’s end, Jake Weimer lead this one from start to finish to grab the moto 2 and overall win in the 250 class. This was Jake’s second overall win on the year. Brett Metcalfe dug deep the entire second moto to get second after making many passes in the moto. Pourcel held his championship lead in moto 2 with a third place.

In late August we found ourselves back at the Pagoda Motorcycle Club in Birdsboro, PA, for the second out of three SX / MX weekends that the club will host in 2009. As been par for the course this year, the weather once again changed everyone’s plans, dumping massive amounts of rain on the facility in the day and overnight prior to the event.

This time the track crew from Pagoda made the call to cancel their Saturday night SX in the hopes of salvaging the track for Sunday’s MX

race. I wasn’t there, but many claim there was a river running through the pits on Saturday, and some were skeptical that Sunday’s race would even take place.

The faithful hunkered down and stayed, and they can be glad they did. Sunday morning awoke full of sunshine with warm but pleasant August temperatures. The club members got to work right away, and by race time the track was ready for racing.

The 250 A group was the first class off the gate, and the crowd got a treat with Pro Motocross racer Cameron Rodriguez from Las Vegas, NV, making the trip to Pagoda the day after Budds Creek. Rodriquez rode well but was no match for some of our locals who are determined to reach the top of their class. Young Cody Lunceford would ride to a 2-1 finish for first overall, with Jeremy Cook going 3-2 for second, then Rodriquez 1-5 to round out the podium.

In Open A action, Cook would take the O/A by sweeping the class, with Dan Holton finishing second followed by Lunceford in third and Rodriguez in fourth. Pagoda club member Justin Frederick would round out the

Ritchie Kastle would win both divisions by consistently running up front. Local fast guy Kameron Page had two great first motos but couldn’t put it together the second time around in either B division, allowing Kastle to go on for the wins.

Some individuals cringe at the thought of the word motorcycle, envisioning a vile and dangerous piece of equipment. These people may never see the impact that riding a bike can give you. Although racing is a sport where you find yourself on the edge most times, there is feeling that it gives you that no words can describe. As a paraplegic, I can tell you that one of hardest things to do is watch a race. This is not due to fear or the thought of my accident, but because of the hole that is in my heart where racing once stood. This is sport with many benefits, but we mustn’t forget the dangers.

Every year there is a memorial race held in remembrance of Connor LaFrance. For those of you who don’t know him, he was an up and coming rider who wore the number 767 in multiple styles of racing. He was obviously a versatile rider competing in road races, flat tracks, and super motards. Connor lost his life doing something that he loved when he was only 14. Here is his story from his story….

“Connor passed away in Birmingham, Alabama, on September 21, 2007. He was prepping for the Red Bull Rookies Cup tryouts the following weekend at Barber Motorsports Park. He was out on his CRF450 getting some sight-in laps under his belt while I was getting his RS125 ready to go. He was out for his second session when, as I understand, Connor sat up on the bike coming down the straight between turns 8A and 9. Before the entrance to T-9, Connor raised his left arm to signal he was slowing down and when he looked over his left shoulder to clear before he entered T-9, he veered right off the track and impacted the ARMCO barrier. He crashed right near a waiting ambulance crew, who treated him until a Life Flight could arrive. Connor was airlifted out to Birmingham Children’s Hospital, which is a Level-1 Pediatric Trauma treatment facility. Connor fought for six hours, which was enough time for his mom to fly down and kiss him goodbye before he passed. Connor had turned

14 on June 1st and left behind his two sisters, Brittanie and Emily. He was one of the most focused, talented young racers in the country. He was also one of the most compassionate, humble, funny kids around. He picked on his sisters as brothers should, and he had many friends of all ages and all walks of life.” -767

Twelve riders pushed their bikes up to the line for the second annual Connor LaFrance memorial race and the first main event of the night. When the green light popped, Tyler Phillips #3 took the holeshot with pole sitter #57 Ryan Connelly and Gary Jenkins close behind. The red flag came out, sending Jenkins to the penalty row due to a jumped start. The race restarted where Connelly took the holeshot followed by Phillips and Jason Connelly before another red flag was flown due to a crash coming out of turn 2. Ryan Bills went down, collecting Erin Kissinger, Gary Jenkins, and Anthony Crabbe. The third restart was much like the one prior with Connelly out front. Cunningham was working on taking the second position away from Phillips when they made contact. Cunningham went down with his bike cartwheeling down the track giving Gregory Lerch the third spot. Lerch was closely followed by Crabbe, Donald Mullen Sr., and female rider Becca Zafia. Connelly pulled away to take the win followed by Phillips and Lerch. The race can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcEnKUjbcxI. The 250B race was a repeat of the memorial race with Connelly up front and Phillips close behind getting pressure from Zafia. They finished the race in that order.

Tyler Phillips took the early lead in the Open B with Jason Cunningham nipping at his heels. With three-quarters of the race behind him, Phillips went down coming out of four.

Cunningham clipped the falling rider and also went down. Gary Jenkins had no choice but to hold on and launch over the downed bikes, which also grounded him. The race was restarted where Gregory Lerch got out front. Gregory Lerch took the win in front of Ryan Connelly, Stephen Lerch, and Becca Zafia.

Warren Diem #4 pulled the holeshot in the 40+ class flashing vibrant colors as his bike entered turn one. He led the first lap until a red flag. Ken Haldeman was sent to the penalty row. Diem got the jump on the second start and took it home to win. Diem was followed by Ray Jenkins, Donald Mullen Sr., Tom Majeski, and Scott Mullen. The 30+ class showed to be a tight battle between the five riders entered into the class. Roy Miller got the holeshot and led until Perry “Ace” Phillips took the lead on his #18 mounted bike. Rich Mellinger followed Phillips past Miller to take over the second spot. Phillips pulled away for the win followed by Mellinger, Miller, Ken Goodwin, and Nick Arment.

Little Damon Ream rode his way to victory on his #17 machine in the 50 4-6 chain class after quite a battle with Ethan Stroh. Ream got the start, and it looked as though he was going to pull away, when Stroh made a charge on the outside. Both riders stayed on the gas and ran side by side. After several laps of battle, Stroh went down going into turn three, giving Ream the win. Ream was followed by Racer Stacey, Hunter Morgan, Justin Sparacks, Ethan Stroh, and then Trent Wilson. Stroh had a little better luck in the 50 4-8 Shaft class later on in the night. In that race, Nicholas Crone got the jump over Stroh, Damon Ream, Kaiden Rhoads, Racer Stacey and a few other riders. Ream made a move on Crone to take over the leading position. Then Stroh takes the second position and Rhoads the third position, dropping Crone back to fourth. Three riders went down in between turns three and four, leaving Stroh

with the win. Nathan Reichert and Chase Smith battled in the 50 7-8 class until Reichert went down. Smith took the win followed by Zach Kolsorvky, Reichert, and Alex Myers.

Brandon Price #92 pulled the holeshot in the 65 class and took home the win. Colin Cunningham was hot on Price’s heels until his bike died in turn two. Chase Smith took over the second spot followed by Nathan Reichert. Cunningham took home the fourth position in front of Trever Williams. Price ran away with the 85 7-11 win. Cameron Smith had to battle Ken Kolsovsky before he took the second position on the outside coming out of turn two. The 85 12-15 class was full of excitement when Joey Jurgens #21 took the lead after Colton Smith went down in turn one. While Smith has been a repeated winner, Jurgens took home his first ever win. Smith caught back up to third and was within a turn of the leaders where Jurgens passed the checkers followed by Owen Cook. Jurgens was also excited because it was his first race on a 125 where he went home with a fourth-place finish. Colton Smith took that win followed by Samantha Bergman and Matt Trout in the second and thirds spots. Colton

Smith also won the Kids 150 class. Cody Bauer pulled the holeshot before Smith made his move in turn two. Cameron Smith later passed Bauer to take home the second spot.

Samantha Bergman took home the win in the 150 adult class on her #95 TSI Suzuki. Matt Langrehr took the second spot followed by Bergman’s sponser Mark Tsirigos. Brett Singer brought home the fourth spot. Langrehr also ran the Open Twins class where he had to battle Chris Rhoads. Rhoads got out front and held off the pack until Langrehr made a pass in turn three to take the win. Chris’ father, Dwayne Rhoads, put up a fight with Ronnie Pfander and Cliff Diem to finish third. The 500 2-valve race win went to Jim Chapman

the Lampeter Fairgrounds.

The Memorial Race was “Battle Royal” where each rider pushed their bikes to the limits trying to get out front.

Here Tyler Phillips (3) fell going into turn three. Jason Cunningham (14x) ran out of track and collided into

Phillips. Don Mullen Sr. (73x) had no choice but to lay his bike down.

Donnie Mullen, “Mr. Shorttrack,” took home another hat trick with wins in the Sportsman, Open A, and Stock Frame classes. He said that his Miller Motorsports Honda is handling great and has proven that it is getting the job done. His brother, Perry Phillips, was mentioned before for his win in the 30+, but here he took a second to his brother in the Stock Frame class followed by Derek Hersh, Travis Diem, and Jonathan Reid. Tommie McGrane took home the second spot in the Sportsman class where he was close enough to take the lead if Mullen screwed up. McGrane was followed by Austin Greenland, Mike Poe, and Jesse Long. Greenland took second in the Open A followed by McGrane and then Poe.

Roy Miller got the jump on Rich Mellinger, Alan Acri, Kevin Bills, and Ryan Heagy. Mellinger pressured Miller on the outside for a few laps before Miller pulled away for the win. It was an excellent night and a great show, and we all look forward to the next couple of races. District 7 Gold series held Round 11 of the 2009 season at Delmarva Motorsports Park at their new location in Easton, MD, formally known as The Landing. With clear skies and temps in the mid-80s, it was a great day for racing. Over 225 Quad and MX riders signed up for 38 classes held in 21 motos. The racing began with back-to-back quad action as Quad C took the gate first. Ten riders took the drop, and Ryan Cochran, #113, held them off to take the first moto and also the second later on in the day. The second moto brought out Div. 2 and Josh Rogers, #90, took on nine other riders only to hold them off and take both motos as well. Other quad riders to hold off the field in both motos were Brandon O’Neill, #504, Quad 8-15 Prod; Jordan Kaufman, #105, 13-15 Prod; and Anthony Capuano, #11, in 40+.

MX riders broke up the quad rally briefly as 35+A took the gate with Christopher O’Hara, #121, taking the holeshot and both motos for the day. O’Hara also won all motos in 25+ and Vet 30+A. Troy Remines, #22, split motos with Timothy Cranston, #54, to take the win in

35+ Amateur. Remines also came back from a fourth-place finish in the first Vet 30+C moto to win the second, giving him a second-place overall finish in the class. In the 50+ class, Mike Farmer, #78, took both motos over Joseph Kromer, #53, who finished a solid second.

The track was turned back over to

the quads with Quad A taking the gate. Joseph Elliot, #152, split motos with Keith Hitchens, #279, with Elliot taking the overall win. Riders taking

both motos in a quad class were Tanner Marvel, #22, in Quad B; Skyler Thompson, #29. Quad 4-6 LTD; Thereas Max, #429, 6-8 Prod; and Brett Benton, #221, in 6-11 Prod.

Senior 40+ took the gate with 10 riders and John Kernan, #52, taking the overall first-place win with 3-1 finishes. Todd Stith, #74, finished 1-4, giving him third, while Ted Orr, #740,

took dual seconds, giving him the second-place trophy. Kernan also took second in Vet 30+A by finishing 2-2 behind Christopher OHara. Jeffery Wroten, #166, took both in Senior 40+ Amateur.

Scott Clark #442 won all four motos in Schoolboy and 250B. Clark also finished second in Open B behind

Pleasure Valley Raceway hosted Round # 10 of 12 of the MDRA Race Series at their beautiful facility in the hills of western PA in late August. Again Mother Nature was working against us as Hurricane Bill made his way up the eastern seaboard bringing rain to the Saturday practice. Luckily, the storm blew through to allow for a dry day of racing on Sunday. The event boasted a $5,000 pro purse in addition to the factory contingencies that were offered on the day.

I guess as they say, “show me the money,” and they come. Over 35 expert racers participated in both the 250 and Open A divisions. It was the largest expert turnout I’ve seen all year. The money in combination with the MDRA and PAMX racers present along with any D6 riders, and the gates were full. It was almost a warm-up race for the Tri District Shootout that will take place here in late October.

The funny thing is, as many fast guys that were there, it was one guy that made it look easy. Team Green’s Lowell Spangler would be the dominant racer on the day. Spangler was third into the first turn in the first 250 A moto and even crashed twice during the race

and came back to win. In the first Open A moto, he took the holeshot and never looked back. It even appeared to me that he wasn’t even pushing himself, and he won that moto by 10 seconds. And trust me the names were there, McDade, Shuckhart, Schmelyun, Cook, Slusser, Durham and both Toth boys, do I need to keep going? Either those guys didn’t show up or Spangler made a statement that should have someone paying attention. In the end, Spangler would win all four premier expert motos on the day.

In other racing action, as I mentioned earlier, it was a good day to get a feel for the year-

end shootout that is right around the corner. The MDRA took the overall honors last year, but they were racing on their home turf. Will we have the PAMX coming back strong at PVR this October? Looking at today’s results I would think that everybody should be out there putting in as many laps as possible if we want to bring the trophy back east.

MAMA held its 10th race of the season at Budds Creek the weekend of Sept. 5 and 6, 2009. Temps were in the mid-80s with a slight breeze, and the skies were clear all afternoon. Gates as large as 37 riders took to the track, making

for some exciting holeshot action as well as great battles on the track.

Racing started Saturday amid rounds of practice. Amanda Brown #297 took both motos in the Women’s class and continued her success on Sunday by taking both

in Mini Women Open. Mike Farmer #78 won both races in Super Senior Open and took the overall win in Senior Open with 2-1 finishes, with Joe Caruso #454 taking second with finishes of 3-2. Greg Voell #84 won both in Super Senior Support and Ronnie Rollins #28 in Senior Support. In Schoolboy 12-16 action, Scott Clark #442 split wins with Eddie

Jones #521.

Jones also finished a solid second on Sunday in 250B.

Sunday’s action consisted of 19 motos combining 28 classes with 80AB taking the gate first. Austin Toskov #86 won both in A, while Dallas Shahan #89 and Nathan Card #420 finished one-two in B. Toskov also finished first in Supermini by winning both motos in that class as well. Anthony Jefferson #517x went 3-1 to finish first over John McNamara #55, who went 2-2 in 80C 12-15. Nicholas Carruba #180 won all four motos in 60A and 80B 9-11. Michael Holliday #421 won both in 60B and Tyler Stepek #314 in 60C. Colton Bailey #21 won both motos in Open A, with Chad Wages #445 taking second. Tony Archer #50 went 6 for 6 for the day with wins in 250B, Open B and Schoolboy 14-16.

Open C hit the track with a gate of 31 riders, and Michael Reynolds #98 held off the field twice to take both wins. Lewis Mackay #19 and Gregory Hoffman #529 battled it out in Open C Div II with 28 other riders on their tails to split wins, with Mackay taking the second moto and

the overall victory. Reynolds went on to win both motos in 250C with a gate of 37 and Mackay right behind him to take second. 50AB took to the track with Dunovan Ivory #7 taking both motos for the win in A as Cody Groves #125 led the field of 16 other riders to victory twice in B. David Valdez #530 took both in 50 Oil 7-8, Jake Boteler #14 in 50 Oil 4-6, and Justin Perez #608 in 50 4-Stroke Multi Speed. Mikayla Hostelka #208 took both in Mini Women Support, while Andrew Benson #191 and Chad Wages #445 split in 250A, with Benson taking the first-place trophy.

The 250 classes had the largest gates of the day with 37 riders

in each. Michael Reynolds #98 continued his streak in 250C and won both motos with Lewis Mackay #19 putting in a great effort to grab second. William Knott #132 dominated the Div II class with Christian Pinto #274 close behind. Nicholas Carubba #180 grabs the holeshot in 60B.

President’s CornerD7 President’s Corner

The season is winding down, and we have some state championships to race. The Delaware State Championship will already have been raced as of this article. I encourage all to support the PAMX Championship on Oct. 17-18 at Pleasure Valley. The Maryland State Championships will be held on Nov. 21-22 at the nationally famed Budds Creek. This is the perfect time to show off your talents and riding skills amongst the best in the region. All of the top expert and pro riders will be competing for the large cash purses. Come out and watch the best of the best show their stuff.

The Dirt Track season comes to an end at Delta Speedway on Oct. 16-17 for the night finale of the Mid Atlantic Series. The series has over $6,000 in cash to be handed out to the overall series winners. This is the first year for the series, and the numbers have been pretty impressive.

The Dual Sport, Hare scrambles, and Trials all have their final events in October. This is their last chance to better their positions for their year-end awards. The membership numbers in District 7 have been down all year overall. However, Dual Sport has doubled their membership from last year. Enduro came in with a 22 percent increase in memberships over last year. Thanks go out to Chris Borger for his relentless devotion and dedication to these two disciplines. Thanks to Trials Chair Laura Paugh, Trials saw a 12.5 percent growth this year. Unfortunately, Laura will be moving to Texas after this season. We wish her luck, and we are looking for someone to step up and take over where Laura leaves off. Dirt track youth came on strong at the end of the year with a 28 percent increase. I’ll say it again. This region puts younger riders in the Grand National Dirt Track series than any other region in the country.

The District 7 Banquet will be held Dec. 5 at the Crowne Plaza in Timonium, Md. This is the home to the Maryland State Fairgrounds. The banquet is open to the public. Our banquet has been one the best banquets in the area. There’s great food, live entertainment, and, best of all, the best awards ceremony in the region. One last thing for the parents to consider as the season winds down. The holiday season is approaching, and a young racer is always growing out of their gear. Please do not come up short on the safety items, too. Shoulder pads, knee pads, hip pads, neck braces, and boots are all essential safety protection that your child needs. I’ve been a referee for 18 years, and I’m still picking kids up off the track without the above items on their person while racing. This is a dangerous sport we choose to participate in. We can minimize the dangers by wearing the proper protective gear. Our children’s motorcycles are still under the scrutiny of the government. That problem has not gone away. The law is still on the books. We’re just in a temporary stay of enforcement. We cannot give the public or the government any reason not to give our motorcycles back. We must protect and show safety at all times toward our children. They are the future.

Dear all MX Racers,I just spent the weekend racing in

Florida with some local fellow racers. Among the dedicated, or perhaps you may call us crazy, were Tyler Kirschner, Jack Rogers, Caleb Keck, Collin Kauffman, and Drew Blankenship. I drove till 5 a.m. to have my son back home for school Monday morning. Racers are a breed of their own.

Back to business, the Shootout Race is Oct. 16, 17, and 18 at Pleasure Valley. Don’t miss this race; it is the only true race to determine what series has the best riders. All the tracks have state championships; in fact I think Pennsylvania has two or three state championship races. The Shootout is bringing the best of all the states and series together to establish the best riders and series.

The 2009 MDRA Banquet is all set, so mark your calendars for Saturday night, Oct. 31. Only 300 tickets are being sold, so don’t miss your chance! We have so much cool stuff to give away. As in the past years, if you place at the MDRA series, you must attend the banquet to get your award. We have gotten a few calls addressing the issue of the banquet being on Halloween night, and unbeknownst to us, some towns have Trick-or-Treat on weekend nights. In our vicinity, they only have Trick-or-Treat on weekday nights because of having less traffic on the roads and providing a safer environment for the children. So I do apologize to those who may miss their Trick-or-Treat night. We have, however, decided to try and make it up to you. We (Doublin Gap) are going to hold a Trick-or-Treat on Sunday morning following the banquet from 9 to 9:45 a.m. in the Pitts. Everyone is invited to participate. The 2009 District 6 Ultimate Quad Series made its second trip to the northwest to visit Hurricane Hills in Clifford, Pa. Beautiful weather was the call for the whole Labor Day weekend. A good number of riders took advantage of the weather during Saturday’s practice to dial in their machines for Sunday’s race. Once practice ended, everyone showered up, ate some dinner and sat around a few fires scattered throughout the pits as a cool autumn night set in. Competitors and friends alike were chatting away about this past season’s races and the championships that will be decided as the season draws to a close.

The heavy fog that filled the valley stood no chance as a warm sun rose. As the sun peeked from the mountains, it gave light to the track workers as they prepped the course for the day’s action. First on the line was the 70cc CVT class. Travis Wotring extended his points lead by going 1-1. DJ Bassini

and Adam Devonshire rounded out the podium. In the Girls class, Hunter Titus would take the overall over #124 of Kelie Moran and the #519 of Erin Minervini. Women’s class had Shannon Matzo taking the overall win over Sandra Pearson by going 2-1 over Pearson’s 1-2. In the 50cc Ltd, #6 Dale Raven went 2-1 over a very fast #918 Julian Coffing going 1-2 and #13

Jake Szigeti. Raven was able to repeat his performance in the 50cc Prod, but this time hot on his heals was #117 Kyle Frick. Raven was able to hold off Frick in the second moto by only fractions of a second to take the moto win and the overall. Alan Myers Jr. was able to take the overall by going 1-1 over the #3 of Ethan Pearson and #93 of Kevin Kubinak. 90cc CVT was

Wyatt Kowalchuk out of Effort, Pa., going 2-2. Taylor Johnson was able to take second with his first-place finish in the second moto over Bradley Rostkowski. Nicolas Major was able to hold off #101 Hunter Titus, Travis Wotring and 16 other riders in the Sr. Mini class.

In the Open A and Pro-Am classes, it was a four-way battle all day between

taking Lombardo’s line. Lucarelli was able to absolutely checkout from there. Unfortunately, his third-place effort was only able to score him a second overall. Riding as an “A” class rider for the first time was Nick Moser taking the overall. But in Pro-Am, Lucarelli would have his revenge, taking the overall over Nick Moser and Quinton Barto. The #01 of Tyler Dommel put in a dominating performance in Open B and College Boy classes. There were three Vet classes: 30+, 35+ and 40+. Jeff Thompson, Ronald Ranck, and Chris Scalettie took wins in their respective classes. Open C class had closed battles all day between Cody Johnson, Sam

Campbell, and Justin Carr. Johnson was able to edge them out by going 3-1 over Campbell’s 2-2 and Carr’s 1-4. Dylan Tremellen had to hold the charges of Matt Shroyer and Zach Sinz in the School Boy class.

Miles Mountain marked the 10th and final round of the Ultimate Series for 2009. From Pagoda on the April 4th weekend to now, Labor Day weekend, Sept. 6, it’s been a wonderful year in the Ultimate Series. With 22 new series title winners and a banquet in January, this year surely had bested the last. And I for one can not wait for the 2010 series. But before I get too far ahead of myself, let’s cover the great facility that is Miles Mountain and the last round of this year’s D-6 Ultimate Series. As we do all season long in the D-6 area, we had an unexpected guest stop in at Round 10; Cernic’s back #101 former Canadian National champion Paul Carpenter came to play his hand in the Open A class and 25+ class. Paul dominated the 25+ with a 1-1-1 on the day. But Paul sang back-up to Lebanon, Pa.’s Team Green ride of our own Lowell Spangler #27. Paul surely had great speed, form and good results on the day, but I had the #427 machine’s lead out some 8-10 seconds in five laps over the #101, followed by the #360 of Cook and the #15 of Kyle Sidel, and Dan Holton rounded out the top five spots overall in the Open A class. Noted series points leader Dylan Brajkovicv #427X (this weekend) had a pretty serious foot injury recently and was just riding to hope and hang on to the series titles he’s worked so hard for all year long. He toughed out a great 14-10-12 out of 20 talented kids, injured and all. Two thumbs up Dylan; champions are made by riding hurt. No matter what the outcome, you’re still a champion. Lastly in the Open A class, West Shore Suzuki’s TLD/rider “Levi” Garrett Toth #231 had a solid third in moto one behind Spangler and Carpenter, but bike problems dropped him to a DNF in moto two, killing his top three hopes overall. Moving into the B classes we saw some of our best back in action, and also some a very fast Yamahas/Oneal/AMS rider Kameron Page #14 making the B class jump look very easy and winning from day one on the bigger YZF250 and YZ125. He looks very comfortable and right at home on the bigger bikes. Kameron was not alone on great rides here. Schoolboy 12-16 class newly crowned LL’s champ EVO rider Jessie Pierce #489 and the #469 of Jason Astudillo rode hard to finish out the top spots on the boxes in the Schoolboy 12-16 class. Kameron went 20-5-

12 in the Open B on is YZ250F, and he went 2-1-1 in the 250 B class. Open B class went to Nick Desiderio #57, Michael Fowler #15, Frank Lettieri # 94, Charles Sherby # 16 and Billy Galligher’s #371, while 250 B class racers Page #14, Lettieri #94, Fowlers #15, Sherby #16 and Yingling #225 were top five on this day. 40 A class was wild to say the least for the veteran riders. While #31 Barry Carsten’s Bromley RMZ always makes the passes and takes the wins week in and week out, that was not the case this week. While Barry won some races, the 40+ A classes had the #930 of Gaylon Dixion besting the RMZ-backed Carsten in both motos. Gaylon has stepped up his game this year; he is in shape and ready to de-thrown the longtime dominate rider of Barry Carsten, though the #31 of Carsten took both the Vet A and 35+ A classes. So Bad Barry is not done yet, by no means, but the competition is stepping it up in these classes. AMS’s own Mike Bear put serious pressure on Dixon in a moto this week, and Bear did the same to Carsten a few weeks back at Hurricane Hills, making Barry move over on Bear on the last lap one corner from the checkers. The Vet and Plus A classes remain a fast favorite

class for all to watch. The 65cc 10-11 class saw a dominate ride yet again by Joseph Galbraith #47 going 1-1-1 on the incredible Miles Mountain track. The #47 was kept honest by the #31 of Cory Carsten, Noah Facccone #912, Logan Huff #224 and Chris Ford #3f to complete the top five for this last round of the 2009 Ultimate Series. I am pretty sure Cory Carsten #31 won the class title over Faccone and Huff, but all three kids did a great job all year long, and it was not any different at the Miles Mountain race. These three or four kids will be fun to watch make it through the ranks in the next few years. Great job by all mentioned here. Junior Mini class is one that is well-stacked with talented kids, and the fence fills to watch them just like it’s an A class race. We have some really great young kids making the Junior Mini class very exciting. Huntingdon, Pa.’s, Ryan Clites #14 has been the top dog all year, leading the series from earlier on and never letting go of the points lead. Ryan put in a 1-1-1 ride in the class over Chase Niller’s #54 KTM 3-2-2. Brandon Hartranft #20 got lucky with a 2-7-3 for the final spot on the podium. This class had almost 25 entries in it and was a great race from green to the checkers. Open C class saw National Champion and EVO rider Jessie Pierce’s #489 take the 1-1-1 sweep over the VPE mounted Stephen Vertucci #209 and MGX’s Avery Brown #971. Jessie is surely ready to make the leap to the next class for 2010, but he is young enough that he can take the schoolboy route a year before going to the B classes. Either way you look at it, now a national champion, guys do gun for him weekly. The #209 of Vertucci is a constant force at the front of the pack in the 250 C and Open C classes. As for Avery “downtown” Brown #971,

we all know the speed Avery is capable of, but he has not put it all together just yet in the big races. Avery’s young, fast and a quick learner. I look for him to improve for 2010. The women’s class saw Pagoda’s own Michelle Kastle #118 leading going into the final round for a 2009 D-6 Ultimate. But Michelle suffered some bad luck with a DNF and DNS on the day - a day I am sure she would like to do over now. She is way better than those results, and her leading the series for most of the year shows that. We saw the #36W of Sam Waldrop take the #18 machine of Bree Young to the last lap of the last moto for the final spot in the box in the series of 2009. Sam knew she had to beat the #18 of Bree Young to have a chance for the top three spot, and she did just that. This is a wonderful class that has grown year by year, and every year I cannot wait to see how big the women’s class will be. Hats off to you girls; really nice riding all year long. The 85cc 9-11 class saw former 2X MDRA champion Brandon Garlock #108 make the over four-hour trip to go 1-2-1 on the day in this class.

I talked to Brandon a bit, and the # 108 ride was thrilled with the Miles track and staff and said it was well worth the drive. As for the 9-11 year old Twigg’s/919 DeSigns rider, I thought he was spot on. Brandon did not go without some competition in the class. The #2t of Schae Thomas and #7 of Galbraith were not far off the pace. 45+ class saw Gap Racing’s own Tom Sabastian #70 put in a har- fought 2-1-1 over James Fisher #310 and Kim Kline #20. Tom’s #70 is not a slow poke machine on the track, and the 45+ rider gets around just fine. Gap Racing was a Gold sponsor of the Ultimate Series, and his help was needed and welcome in these tougher times right now. I would like to see Gap back in it for 2010, but only time will tell. But I would think no matter what, the #70 of Sabastian will be rippeng the berms apart for some time to come yet. Thanks Gap Racing for your support in 2009 in the Ultimate Series. 50cc Auto Stock class saw Series Champion Bryner Banrhardt #13 take the familiar #1 spot he’s grown to know so well this year. The #13 rider was pressured by the #4 of Josh Hoover. The #199 Ashton Irion, #6 of Robert Clipper and the 12b of Brian Saurial rounded out the top five. These 50 classes were a bit hard to cover, as they took place on a separate track at the same time the other motos were running on the big track. 50cc Auto 7-8 class saw the 2X 2009 Ultimate Champion Devin Kusmider take the honors with

EVO’s own Jeremy Kready #818 grabs the lead early here on his Keeny Motorsports MCC CRF450. Not only is EVO a gold sponsor, EVO races too! And that gives you the best of the best in

after-market products, R&D!

The Open A class gets started here. With names like Spangler, Toth, Carpenter, Sidle and many more, this was one race no one wanted to miss. Spangler’s #427

took both wins by about 10 seconds.

This was the sight all day long at Miles Mountain: parents and racers counting points to see who won. Devin Kusmider’s #31 was already a title winner at this

point, with one more title undecided yet. He won both!

a confident 1-1-1 just ahead of the 2-2-2 of Jordan Jarvis, and the #501 of Tyler Walborn. All the kids put in some great rides, and parents were just going nuts crunching numbers and making last-minute choices. Some worked, and some did not. But either way in these classes, it is all about the fun and friends for these kids. While winning is important to even a 4-year-old, when the day ends, the friends and families coming together is what makes motocross motocross. The Miles Mountain round was just a perfect weekend; superior service, a great track and a solid program made many people fall in love with the northern bound facility, even with a bump or two here or there. The facts are a great track and good people equal return customers over and over, and the Miles track will get return D-6 riders to go back. For over a year I heard how good this track was, and I will say I was not let down. If you’re interested in riding a loamy, long, well-laid motocross track, I suggest you look up Phil Englston from the Miles Mountain facility, and he will make your trip well worth a few hours in the RV or van. I can only compare the place to a Broome-Tioga track with top soil. The track made for great racing all day long. It was well watered and groomed throughout the day, and that goes a long way with people as well. It was a wonderful way to end the 2009 Ultimate Series - close to how it started, with a BANG! After several days of rain, the MX gods pushed the clouds out and the sun shone on a beautiful day of racing. Once again, Duanne and Tracey pulled off another fine race. Some were concerned about making the journey due to the weather, and they missed out on a really fun day! Competition was great, as was the track. Evansville worked into the night working the track, getting it ready for Sunday’s race. There was a lot of rain the days previous (over 2 inches), but those guys know how to get the water off the track. Saturday’s practice was cancelled due to conditions, but it paid off for Sunday. Instead of the quagmire it could have been, it actually worked out very well. Sunday’s practice was fine; after the first group went out, the track totally dried out and made for a good competition-packed afternoon!

Super-minis were going for it at Evansville; those kids were flying! There was a lot of passing back and forth, and the race ended with #313

Perry winning the race and two of my teammates finishing up in the second (#123 Schultz) and fourth spots (#918 Hynson). The third spot on the podium went to #11m of Mcdonald. As always, flat tires and stone spray were abundant. I think this track is the great equalizer due to the shale and the diverse terrain. There is something for everyone here. Plus, when the weather is good, you get to run supercross on Saturday night! Race day was sponsored by Scotts Powersports. This was a points race for District 7 and District 6.

The MDRA series fell upon the great Sleepy Hollow MX Park for my 22nd time on Labor Day weekend. It all started here for me in 1987 as a wide-eyed kid to the sport of motorcross. From this day on in 1987, I was hooked to the sport that makes me now bleed oil instead of blood. This sport is that addictive! That said, the Sleepy Hollow track has gone under some major changes in 2009 season, which was surely welcome but did not come without some bumps in the road along the way. This was the second and last MDRA round at Sleepy Hollow for the 2009 season, and it was by far the best-run and prepared track of the year for the staff. The Swarrs are awesome people who work very hard to make each and every customer happy. And they did just that on this day as well.

I saw some of the best racing all year long. And we even had a California cat try his hat at our local best. More on that as I get into the race coverage though. The Sleepy track was again inundated with Pagoda’s crew, Double’s crew and even Happy Ramblers’ Fishers were on hand for this event. So many great people, track owners and riders were on hand for this big Labor Day race. It is one not to be missed and has remained that way ever since I was a small boy on my first B&B YZ80. The best of the best always came out to show their stuff this day, and this year was no different. From the 50cc class all the way to the Vet and 45+ classes. The field was deep, and all the racers were looking for some Labor Day love from the Hollow. Some found it, some earned it, and others just never really got going off the right foot. But that is racing, and week to week a true champ makes the best of any situation and comes out on top. With only one MDRA round to go, points are getting tight and hard to come by. Each point is very important for those year-end awards, and you could feel it in the air that racers were not messing around at this point. Here is some of what went down at Sleepy Hollow’s MDRA race on Labor Day Monday.

Senior A class saw the #127 of Eddie Anewalt get the overall with a 4-1-1 on the day ahead of the #515 of Brad Stepp, the #156 of Marc Tessler, and the #343 of Jerry Seip. Seip took moto 1

but had some troubles in moto 2 was and only able to muster a fifth. That opened the door for Anewalt’s fourth-place moto one to make the overall. Even though a 4-1 usually dooesn’t grab the overalls, it was enough on this day for the #127 machine to make it happen. I might as well include Senior B class too here because it includes a longtime D-6 racer and Sleepy Hollow native Brian Eichelberger, who went 2-1-1 in the first race back in many years. Brian was a fixture to the track like the “Bozi” was back in the 1980s and 1990s. He was constant at the track and always was on the West Shore Suzuki RM125 ride. Brian left the motorcross tracks for many years, turning his two-wheeled passion in for the four-wheeled kind, sprint cars. And he was very good at that as well. Nice to see a local longtime legend back at the track and on a bike. Brian’s #552 RM250 did have some competition in the #60 of longtime friend Paul Shafer, and Mike Reynolds #953 would take the last spot on the box this day.

The CB class saw Addison Kramer #207 take his MCC KXF to a 1-1-1 finish of the ECS ride of Aughinbaugh #883 and the #3 of Pagoda’s Rich Kastle. The CB class is a tough class in this area. It is strictly an age class, 14-24. You fit in the middle of that age bracket and you’re in. The tough part is that there are many A riders in that age range, and it’s a hard road to race against cats like Kramer and others. One good thing about it is that you will not get faster by riding with slower guys, so if you’re about to move from B to A, this class can get your feet wet before you take the plunge into the big dogs class full time. Good ride by all three guys mentioned here.

The 50cc 4-6 class saw the #94 of Cameron Davis, Chase Yentzer #316, and Mason Bowman #269 go 1, 2, 3 in that order all day long. The #94 seem to have the field covered, but it was not without pressure from the #316 and the #269. Shindel’s #2j, Kauffmans’s #65 and the #67 of Daniel Stephens round the 4-6 class this Labor Day weekend.

Super mini classes are extremely close in talent. These kids are within just a few short months of being off the smaller bikes all together. The Super mini saw the VPE #775 of Luke “Pepsi Cola” Palonicola take a 1-1-1 win over the #887 of Thomas Coluzzi and the #88 of Jesse Pulliam. Coluzzi’s #887 kept the VPE ride of Palonicola

in sight, but by moto’s end he just came up short on the day. Thomas’s 2-2-2 ensured him that second-place spot behind the #775 and just ahead of the #88 of Pulliam. All these kids will be on the bigger bikes soon, if they are not already. And it will be good to watch them make that adjustment.

Now the 250 A class was insane to watch. With Team Green rider Lowell Spangler #27 (#427 usually) in the house, most of the other A cats seemed to be beaten at the sight of Spangler

pulling in. Just the day before some other A riders asked me, “How do I beat the #427?!” And the answer is simple, really: you have to work for it. Lowell is at the top of his game for a reason. Five laps or 20 minutes, he is ready for it all the time. And Lowell also has a burning desire to win. You can see when he does falter a bit, he is mad! Well, Lowell was mad after 250A moto one. The #231 of Garrett Toth looked like he may de-thrown the Team Grenn rider this day. Garret took an early lead and just did not make any mistakes, held his lines, and most of all, finally knew he could win. And that’s what he did, taking moto 1 over Spangler and Schmelyun’s #111. The #231 machine was not able to repeat that ride in moto two, taking a third-place finish behind the #427

and the #111. And when the dust settled, it was the #427, #231 followed by the AMS/VPE ride of Broc Schmelyun in third overall. The Open A classes went Spangler’s #427, California’s Jesse Casillias #605 and Broc Schmelyun taking in another top three ride overall.

Mark Hushon Jr. #29 was back atop his game this weekend with a stout 1-1-1 in the 65cc 7-11 B class. Hushon’s a great, fast, talented little kid,always having fun out on the track, doing no footers and so on, just showing riding is fun and

not a job at this age. Hushon beat out the #120 of Terry Savion and the #102 of Mason Richards this day. Not a small order to fill, but Mark did it with little trouble and took home the Labor Day honors this year.

The 35+ A class saw some red flag action after a wild turn, one accident that left a few guys heading for the EMTs and DNFs on the day. While it started a bit hairy, it was the #914 of AMS’s own Mike Bear taking the win of Seip’s #343 and Sleepy Hollow’s own Todd Weindel #687. Guys like Bolin, Stansbury, Gilliam, Wort and Johnson all had DNFs. I hope the guys are all OK; most seemed to be up and OK on their own, but others needed some help to get off the track, thus the red flag came out. Heal up guys, hope to see you all very soon back on those thumpers.

The women’s class featured national rider Ronnie Stewart’s sister Nikki #331 taking the top spot. She rode flawless and went on a 1-1-1 overall. No disputing that finish. Nikki rides very well and is usually at the front of the pack. I have been wondering how she’d square up against the #48 of Kelsey Green or the #17 of Amber Hughes, but both girls have been out of action almost all year. But surely things would be a bit tougher with those two back on the saddle. Giberson #663 and Stevey #86 round out the top three at Sleepy Hollow’s Labor Day race.

85cc 9-11 C saw some motos swapped around for the overall spots. The #77 machine of Dominic Tibberino went 1-2-1, while the #007 of Zach Hinkle went 3-1-2. And the last spot on the box was taken by the #97b of John Dopocryk. This field had some 15 riders in it, and it made for some good racing in the 85cc C class. This is a good stepping stone class for those kids just off the 65cc machines, and it seems to be a pretty full class in most cases.

Open B was an eventful race with the #303 of Steven Good coming out on top by day’s end with a 3-1-1. He bested the #371 of Billy Gallagher, the 1X of Alex Hilderbrand, the #187 Alex Maldet, and the #3 of Richie Kastie. All these kids rode hard, swapped some motos around and, at the day’s end, made the top 5 in a very tough B class. These kids have only one more step to make, A! And they all look good enough to make that leap in the next year or so. Good luck guys for next year too.

The Sleepy Hollow track had some surprise guests, had great racing action and, best of all, the staff was and is always a pleasure to work with and for. They do the best job they can, and it showed this day for sure. They all came together to make the day the best day of the year I think for the Sleepy staff. New track layouts take some time to come in, and this one’s doing just that. Race by race, the track’s getting better, the watering is getting better, and that makes for a great, fun day on the track. Mrs. Barto won the mechanics race that is always held on this date. The track was beautiful, as was the weather. It was a long, long weekend for the EastMX.com/gmxr crew. Miles Mountain to Sleepy Hollow to Pagoda in four days. But it was all worth it, and it is what makes the D-6 area so great in so many ways. It did not seem all that long ago that round #1 was just getting started and now it’s all but over. Where does the time go?

Caleb Keck #45 shows the way ahead of Scheets #41, Triggs #602 and Neidigh #211 in the 50cc 7-8 class. Keck goes on with a solid 1-1-1 sweep of the class.

Brandon Garlock #108 and Ryan Clites #14 fi ght for the lead out of turn one in the super mini class. With 23 riders in the class, it was a big day for the

#14 of Clites, who went 1-1-1.
