CAUGHT IN THE ACTSponsored by:

Happy november everybody, actually it’s a bit of a sad month. the racing season here in the area is coming to a close.

that’s oK though. it’s been a great year with a ton of great racing activity. All of the local race Series were a success for the most part. there are always bumps and brusies in anything you do and i’m sure that 07 will be bigger and better than ever.

For some of you, this might be a time to take a break and re fresh yourselves for the upcoming season. For others, no need to hang up that gear yet. the Mini’os are right around the corner in late november and if you don’t want to travel that far there is some great racing going on all winter in the Mid Atlantic region of the country.

Don’t forget about the timonium indoor Short track races either. Wether you want to swap some tires out and get in on the action, or if you ‘re just looking for a great place to be a junkie, the timonium Series is always a ton of fun to participate in.

then we have thanksgiving and hunting season. Please remember to take a moment and be thankful for the good things you have going on in your life. i know sometimes you may think that life is handing you a bad deal, but when it really comes down to it, i’m sure there may be others out there that don’t have it quite as good.

to all the hunters, good luck and be safe. Please remember that here at MrA we support you and we love a good stick of deer bologna. Also remember that christmas is coming and we would graciously accept your presents of such delicacies.

Well, thats about it for this month. We’ll have one more issue of MrA for you this season after this one and then we take a month off to refuel overselves.

remember to renew those District 6 and MDrA cards early so you can get in on the first issue of MrA for 07 that comes out in February. it will be full of important information to help you get thru the upcoming season.

if you’ re a Harescramble or Flat track racer you can also purchase a yearly subscription or ask your District rep to make it part of your membership.

Stay tuned to our website for all of your event pics and we’ll see you next month.

Until next time.Jim Bull, MRA

this month we found ourselves another Hare Scramble Hotshot, actually our Hotshot came to us this month. i met ethan Jaudas last fall at the PA State Harescramble banquet. i had seen him around at the track prior to that, but i had never really talked to him or watched him ride for that matter.

ethan did quite well last year in his first year of racing. He was the PA State champion, he finished second at the Dutchmen and third in District 6. in addition he was awarded the Smith roll off rider of the Year title.

All this got my attention not to mention the fact that ethan and his family were sitting at the table right beside us. ethan’s sister Wendy races the series as well and ethan was far from bashful in introducing himself to us.

i believe it went something like this, hi i’m ethan, can you put me and my sister in your paper. Well i kinda liked the kid and it was obvious he was an accomplished racer, so in he went.

this year as i traveled to the races i kept seeing ethans name at the top of the standings. He is in his second and final year on the 65 and he has continued to do well. ethan has a commanding lead in four different series in 2006. He is champion in the PA States, District 6, Flying Dutchmen and the AgP series.

Potential sponsors if you would notice above, there is no one listed in the sponsor column. ethan gets his bikes at bromley Motorcycles but other than that this kid is wide open. He’s a fantastic racer and he’s not shy one bit. He’s moving up to an 85 next year and my bet is that this young racer from PA is going to continue his winning ways.

now how do you think we found our Hotshot this month? of course ethan walked up to me at the track and said, “ Hey MrA, why don’t you make me a Harescramble Hotshot”? My reply, “ethan, you already took care of that on your own, but why don’t we put you in the paper and tell the rest of the world”.

Watch out next month, you just might be the next MrA - Kenda tire Hotshot.

Hey! i hope everybody’s had a good season. After a year of contemplating the matter, my family finally made the trip to the 12th annual race at branson, Missouri. We started tuesday at around 5 p.m. on our 20-hour road trip. A word of advice to anyone, make sure you bring plenty of things to keep you entertained, because 20 hours is a long drive. the trip out was very scenic compliments of the fall colors starting.

We arrived Wednesday at around 3 p.m. and set up all our stuff. the Leitzels had followed us down so they pitted beside us since only 3 people from D6 were there. After we got situated, we took my little brother Scott up to walk the track before practice the next day.

thursday morning, i woke up at 6:30 a.m. in quite a commotion, everyone was trying to get Scott ready for his first practice and trying to grab a quick breakfast. And to add to all the confusion, my brothers were freaking out because blake and tyler Wharton were pitted directly behind us. if you don’t know who the Wharton brothers are, pick up any Moto Playground, the Pickle, or watch any of the recent amateur racing videos. Practice proceeded for the day, and in between practices… somehow we got acquainted with the Whartons and a few other people, which made all three of my brothers extremely happy.

Friday, the first day of racing rolled around, we ended up having great weather and the track was perfect for all of the motos. With excellent competition down there it was a chance for my brother to really challenge himself, Scott ended up getting 4th in his first 7-8 50cc division 2 stock moto, 5th in his 7-8 50cc division 1 modified moto, and a 12th in his 6-8 65cc division 2 stock moto. Mark Hushon ripped up the

track that day with a 4th in his 7-8 50cc division 2 stock moto, an impressive 3rd in his 6-8 65cc stock division 2 moto, a 7th place in his 7-8 50cc division 1 modified moto, and a 13th in his 6-8 65cc modified class. A perfect ending to a perfect day, this is the first track i’ve ever been to where they allow you to make campfires, of course we all took advantage of this opportunity. My brothers, the Whartons, a few other friends we had met and i all sat around the fire that night and made hot dogs while Scott, Mark, Logan Leitzel and bradly esper made a mini track for their little bikes in the dirt.

Saturday was another perfect day for racing. A bit chilly in the morning but turned out gorgeous later. this was the final day of qualifying motos before the Sunday run-offs. crossing our fingers that luck would stay on our side, we headed up for Scott’s second round of motos. With the track again flawless, and luck at everyone’s sides. We

managed to secure ourselves in the run-offs. With a 9th place finish, an 8th place finish and a 10th place finish we were good to go. And despite a bad nights sleep for the Leitzels, due to heater problems, Logan rose to the occasion and was on fire in his races with a 4th in 4-6 50cc division 1 stock and a 5th in 4-6 50cc modified. Mark secured himself in the run-offs with a 3rd in 6-8 65cc division 2 stock, an 8th in 7-8 50cc division 1 modified, a 4th in 7-8 50cc division 1 stock class, and an 11th place finish in his 6-8 65cc modified class.

“Saturday was another perfect day

fo racing...” Saturday night was probably the craziest

part of the trip. tyler had invited my brother and i to come along to dinner with a few other people. We ended up driving 15 minutes away to a Pizza Hut, and let me tell you, seven racers at Pizza Hut is a recipe for craziness.

Sunday, the day of the run-offs had come. go figure the weather waits until its show time to get rainy and cold out. never the less, we headed up to staging for Scott’s

first race, which was his 50cc modified moto. With the pre-race pep talks from blake and tyler, and wishing all the kids good luck, he was ready to roll. My brothers and i enjoyed one last day of watching the races with our friends, but once the last moto was over, it was the exchanging of numbers, sadgoodbyes, and time to head home.

in all there were only three racers from District 6 at branson, (if i missed anyone else that went i’m sorry!) Mark Hushon, who finished 12th overall in 7-8 50cc modified, 10th in 6-8 65cc stock, 11th in 7-8 50cc modified, and 13th in 6-8 65cc modified. Logan Leitzel finishing 8th in his 4-6 50cc stock moto, and 6th in his 4-6 50cc modified class overall. And Scott Meshey who grabbed a 9th overall in his 7-8 stock moto, 14th in 6-8 65cc, and 7th in 7-8 50cc modified. bradley esper, from District 5 walked away with an impressive 8th in 6-8 65cc stock, 3rd in 7-8 50cc modified, a 5th in 7-8 50cc stock, 6th in Super Pewee, and a 4th in 6-8 65cc modified.

to anyone considering going to branson next year, i would completely recommend it. the competition is absolutely great; the track itself is very well maintained. it’s a well-run event and you meet a lot of new people. congrats to the 50cc and 65cc racers, you’ve done D6 proud.

take FiveBy: amanda Meshey

it’s been a while since anyone in my family has seen a District 6 track. that’s because we’ve been following a District 5 race series called the PA State championship Series.

the tracks are anywhere from two to five hours away… can you say road trip?? usually located out in the western parts of Pennsylvania, and sometimes in West Virginia, we have been up every Sunday at about 3 or 4 a.m. After stopping for gas and a breakfast to go at around sunrise, which out in the mountainous region is gorgeouS to see, we finish our trip to the track.

After parking and setting up as well as getting everybody signed up for their classes, practice starts. We usually get there later so we have to park farther away from the track; the tracks are usually located in valleys or mountains… so the view from the outer edges is absolutely incredible. Practice is completed and then comes the racing.

these tracks are wide-open, so riders can take advantage of all their bike has to offer. Most of the tracks we’ve visited are opposite extremes, either hard packed and slick or really loamy and get rutted out very easily.

You never really know who you’re going to bump into at these events; in fact just the other week at challenger raceway, we happened to pit next to Zach bell and his family. My two youngest brothers spent the majority of the day hanging out with Zach and his little brother chase, asking them a bunch of questions, which they are very good at doing.

the competition at these races from my perspective seems to be really fierce, with Darryn Durham a threat in the 125 and

250 A class, the toth brothers occasionally showing up to dominate their classes chris Willliams tearing up Supermini and 85 14-15 class. Having different people to race is always an exciting challenge for any racer. My brothers are always excited to race out there and experience different competition. especially my little brother, Scott, who has experienced an exceptionally good time battling a new friend named bradley esper, bradley is one of the top kids in the 50 and 65 classes. the PA State championship Series is the biggest series out in district five; so naturally all of the best riders go.

We’ve been lucky and had really good weather for all for all but one of these races. it’s usually very foggy and cold in the mornings, that’s probably due to the fact that we’re so high up. then toward the middle of the day things start to get more mild and warm. thanks to the good weather, the tracks hold up very well for the races, except for a between moto wet down every once in a while.

end of the day comes, and since our motos are usually around last, we leave around seven or eight o’clock. of course everyone’s tired and dirty and we’re all ready to stop somewhere for dinner, but everyone’s had an excellent time.

i recommend the tracks of District 5 to anyone. the races are really well run, the tracks are perfect for any racer whose expertise or guilty pleasure is going fast, and the competition, especially at PA State championships, is first-rate. guaranteed any racer, of any level will enjoy.

Round #10 • PA State Series • September 17, 2006 • By MRA

610-282-0369www.eastcoastatv.comlocated in

Coopersburg, pa

rausch creek Motorsports played host to round # 10 of the PA State Harescramble Series in mid September at their off road Park in tremont, PA.

the morning kicked off chilly and hazy with the Pee Wee bike classes. the 4 classes of racers lined up early in the morning for 45 minutes of racing action. in the end it would be 65cc pilot Henry Ferreira leading the way to the checkers. Andrew Powers took the win in the 110cc Air cooled class with ryan Hall winning oil injection and Aaron Lasher winning 50cc Stock.

next up were three classes of youth AtV racers. Young Hunter grimes would be your winner in the 50cc stock division with brian thorson winning the 51-70 production class. brandon Hess would take the win in the more experienced 71-90 (9-15) year old age group.

From there the racing moved to the back of the park where the youth classes lined up for

some serious competition. the first group off the line was Supermini followed by the 85cc 12-15 class. At the end of lap one Jacobus Ferreira came thru the barrels with a huge lead. it seems that some of the racers got lost on the first lap due to downed markers and they lost valuable time to the super fast Ferreira. 85cc favorites cody Mummert and ian Pannebakker were both down about five minutes on the leader which left it almost impossible to make up the gap. in the end Ferreira held on for the overall win.

in the 150cc Four Stroke division a three way battle has been in the works all season long between Shawn Kozak, taylor Pecika and Lee Ann bange. on this day Kozak would take the win and it looks like this battle will go right down to the wire.

the main event was stacked with a group of lightning fast racers from around the area. the top three would race within minutes of each other for the entire race with AA rider ryan rodgers taking the win followed by Jerod Stoner and benny bouwens. in the afternoon AtV race which was bumped up to two hours from its usual 1 ½ hour time frame, gncc Pro chris borich would again take the win on the familiar rausch creek terrain. borich is a local to the area and he trains at rausch when he is not off chasing a national some where.

Kramer, Cook Capture PA State Motocross Championships24th Annual Tony D. Motocross Schools Pennsylvania State Motocross Championships & Round 14, District Six Ultimate Motocross Championship Series

CLIFFORD, PA, SEPTEMBER 10, 2006

over 500 motocross enthusiasts came out to the Hurricane Hills Sports center for one of the biggest races of the season, the 24th Annual tony D. Motocross Schools Pennsylvania State Motocross championships and District Six ultimate Motocross championship Series. the best riders from the Keystone State and beyond came to the Hurricane Hills racecourse to compete for the coveted title of Pennsylvania State Motocross champion.

Kody renzland, nick Finelli, chris cheney, erik Wilson and Addison Kramer led the start of the opening 125 b moto. by the third turn the top five running order was Wilson, renzland, cheney, Finelli and robert Stanton. Just before lap two started, the top two were unchanged when Stanton passed both Finelli and cheney taking third. cheney and Finelli were relegated to fourth and fifth. on lap two, Stanton moved up another notch, displacing renzland to third. At the start of lap three, Wilson remained at the point with a three second advantage. Stanton and renzland both went down in the big sweeper by the start and cheney, Willis, Kramer and Finelli all advanced. Wilson increased his lead to five seconds at the start of lap four but by the end of the lap, cheney had reduced that advantage to only two seconds and made the pass for the lead in the new rhythm section. Willis was relegated to second. unfortunately, cheney went down with less than a lap to the checkers. Willis inherited the lead and held

on to take the win. Kramer, Wilson, cheney and Michael o’brien closed out the top five.

Wilson, Finelli, Dakota Kessler and Kramer led the start of the final 125 b moto. When the leaders emerged from the downhill triple the running order was: Finelli, Kramer, Wilson, Matt babbitt and Willis. babbitt was charging and displaced Wilson to fourth on lap two. on the following lap, Finelli made a mistake in the big sweeper by the start and Kramer, babbitt, Wilson and Willis all advanced. Finelli remounted fifth. on lap four, Kramer was holding the point but babbitt was closing quickly and made the pass to take the lead one turn before the start of the last lap. babbitt quickly pulled away, taking the checkers with a three second lead. Kramer, Wilson, Kessler and Willis rounded out the top five.

Kramer’s consistent 2-2 rides earned him the overall. Wilson’s consistent 3-3’s netted him runner-up and Willis closed out the podium with a 1-5 tally.

greg “Frenchie” Pamart, Phil nicoletti, Jim Ayres, ronnie Stewart and Jeremy cook led the start of the opening 250 Pro/expert moto. nicoletti took the point in the new rhythm

section and never looked back. nicoletti had a seven second advantage on lap three when cook passed both Stewart and Pamart to claim second. nicoletti increased his lead to nine seconds by lap four and took the checkers with a whopping 15-second lead. cook, Stewart, colton Harrison and Pamart rounded out the top five.

the start of the final 250 Pro/expert moto was a virtual repeat of the first moto but this time, nicoletti took the lead by the third turn. unfortunately, nicoletti went down on lap three handing cook the lead. nicoletti quickly remounted and was working his way back to the front when another mistake put him back on the ground. cook took the win with an eight second lead followed by Pamart, Stewart, Harrison and ron rothkranz. cook topped the podium (2-1). Stewart claimed second (3-3) and Pamart third (5-2).

4 Mountaineer raCewayRound #10 • MDRA Series • September 24, 2006 • by MRA

the 10th and final round of the 2006 MDrA race Series was held at the scenic Mountaineer raceway in inwood, WV. the event was billed as Suzuki Sunday and it was sponsored by your local Suzuki dealer, Martinsburg Motorsports. the MDrA series in only its second year continues to grow and attendance was exceptional at this last round of the year. the weather was somewhat overcast with the occasional rain shower and gust of wind, but till days end things ended up shaping up nicely.

All MDrA events are run over a Saturday and Sunday time frame allowing open practice on Saturday with racing on Sunday. this Saturdays practice was wiped out due to excessive rain so the MDrA members took to the pits and an evening pogo stick contest sponsored by WMXtreme racing. i’m told the winner lasted for 45 minutes on a Moto Stick with some 1600 jumps. i believe they took home a new helmet for their efforts as well.

Sundays racing took a few classes down to the wire for the championships. in the 125 A division, eric Myers had to fight to stay on top to take home the crown and the $1200.00 to win being offered by the MDrA. Myers is relatively new to the sport with only a few years experience. Most of your expert riders have been at it since they were young, so props to eric for digging deep and getting the job done. only eight points separated the top three with Derrick Wile taking second and Jeremy cook finishing third, not bad company to keep.

in Vet c racing action ben Webster and Keith gilliam fought hard to see who would be crowned champion. Webster would win the day and the championship by again

only an eight point spread. in talking to gilliam after the race he said that was the most fun he ever had while racing.

Another great story we have to mention involves the racing barbagallo family. i hope i get the facts right because it was communicated thru an email after the event. it seems that Frank and Anthony barbagallo have been traveling to the races as father and son for the past 10 years competing in their respective divisions. today’s event was the first that they competed against each other in the same class. MrA was there and caught the two in action coming out of the hard left after finish line. it appears that father has taught his son - oh to well.

i’m sure there were many other great battles that deserve recognition that we are missing. You can check the results here and the point’s standings elsewhere in this issue. You can check out the MDrA website for tons of great information and as always be sure to log onto our website at www.mcracingaction.com to check todays and all MDrA event photos.

the Vet c division came down to the last round with ben Webster grabbing

the win and the championship.

Aaron Houser wins both Supermini and 85 (12-15) b on the day.

Frank and Anthony barbagallo competed against each other for the first time in

10 years of racing MX. Anthony (923) finished a little better than his father did.

Wesley boyer (128) leads the charge in 25+ b. boyer goes 3-1 for the o/A.

Michael thompson wins the day in 85cc (12-15) c.

cameron Keck goes 3-1 for the o/A in 50cc (7-8) b.

the 30th Annual Kawasaki race of champions took place over the weekend of September 30th and october 1st. the action packed weekend kicked off on Friday night with the final round of the trapani Pit bike series. Saturday morning dawned with a rare site this season at “rainway Park” the sun was actually out and shining. Saturday’s racing would consist of all of the normal race day classes with the exception of the 125 and 250 expert classes. those premier classes would be reserved for Sunday.

Saturday’s big winners were nick Desiderio taking home the overalls in the 85cc 7-11

and 65cc 10-11 and finishing second overall in the Junior Mini class. on the other end of the spectrum was the newest 40+ expert barry carsten. the elder statesman of nJ motocross was a perfect 6 for 6 taking the overalls in the 25+, 30+ and 40+ expert classes.

the rain that held off for Saturday made its appearance on Sunday morning in full force making the track a muddy mess for the morning practice session. but by race time the sun was out and shining brightly.

canadian east coast champion Kawasaki rider Kyle chisholm was the winner of both 125 expert motos on his way to the overall followed by Massachusetts rider robby Marshall making his first appearance on the chaplin Kawasaki team. Local hero barry carsten was third overall. the 250 expert class saw chisholm take the second moto

after a huge crash caused his first moto DnF. Phil nicoletti took the overall (1-2) followed by barry carsten (3-4) for second and Damian Plotts (2-5) for third.

the Kessler cup was won by team green rider Zach bell after he defended a last ditch effort by nick Desiderio. Frank Lettieri won the top gun Mini Shootout and team green rider Michael Hall won the ironman classic.

James Stewart and tim Ferry were on hand wowing the crowd with their riding skills. Monmouth cycles lent the factory Kawasaki duo machines to use and then sold the bikes after the event.

Despite the little bit of rain on Sunday morning the 30th annual race was a great weekend.

i can’t wait for next year.

A father, a rider, a businessman, a promoter, and the first person that comes to mind when you ask “who’s who” of the MDrA

– rod Yentzer. Many know rod Yentzer as an owner of Doublin gap Motocross Park, but he is much more than that. rod started riding in 1976. Five years later he began racing which he enjoyed for nine years. rod quit racing in 1990 when his brother, Jeff, began racing professionally. it was during this time when he became interested in the “in’s and outs” of the MX business.

in 1995 the Yentzer family purchased Doublin gap. their first race was held in the fall of that year with a rider turn out of about sixty. things have definitely changed! in 2003 more than nine hundred riders showed

up for the northeast classic. this year Doublin gap held the First Annual Kevin crine Memorial race that brought almost six hundred riders.

being riders, rod and his family wanted to create a MX series that was beneficial to riders and rider wants. in the two years since the MDrA series has begun rod has definitely succeeded in doing that. this past season Yamaha riders were offered contingency. riders of all classes, who finished

in the top three, received free riding gear from MSr. overall, this season there was more than $20,000 in cash and prizes.

rod Yentzer, the man, cares about the sport and all involved in the sport. He has brought the fun and excitement back to local motocross. So, when you see rod, thank him for all that he has done.

“the word”by Jamie Jordan

Hi guys!this is chase. i just got a 2007 rM 85! i

LoVe it! on August 19th, i did my first race on my 85 at blue comet Motorcycle club. it was fun. i noticed a lot of differences between it & my 65. the bigger wheels really help out and the power makes it easier for jumps.

i just joined Pagoda Motorcyle club. it is a really cool club and has really nice people. i was there for a motocross and i was flagging for the Saturday night pit bike race. it was a really cool job.

between my motos, i got to water the track in the water truck. it was scary because every time you hit a bump it would feel like you were going to fall out. if you’re looking for a place to race, i would recommend Pagoda, it is a great track. Well, got to go, see-ya!

Friday night September 22, bill brown brought his Mason Dixon Short track to the Delta Fairgrounds for the third and final time in 2006. All three events have seen excellent rider turnouts along with huge crowds of spectators. tonight’s event also brought a Freestyle Motocross Show and a $2500.00 Pro purse for the open expert Modified division.

All the regulars where there plus some. it seems the 50 classes have exploded this year, in the 50 oil division alone they had 17 riders to try and make it to the main event. twelve qualified and a five rider b main was held to accommodate all the kids. things are happening on the other end of the spectrum as well. the 40+ class saw some of the best racing action of the evening; the last three laps saw a two way battle for the lead with Henderson # 29 getting the win at the checkers.

the action was just as intense in the 100cc classes. A youth division has been added this year to handle all of the demand and in the adult division they were battling four and five wide for most of the race.

then the last race of the night came to the line, twelve of the fastest short track racers from our region of the country lined up to battle for the $1000.00 to win. i’m told the race was originally scheduled to be a 25 lap main event, true or not, i do not know. Local Pro Ken Yoder got out front early and held the lead thru the entire twelve laps to get the checkers. that’s when it got exciting. Whether a communication problem, or a rumor, we’ll never know. the white flag came out after lap 11 and Yoder cruised to the win and a cool $1000.00 payout. Some riders claimed they were waiting to wear the leaders down, the right time to make a move. At the end the decision was made to let the race stand as run, Yoder was the victor.

i apologize, i was not able to round up the results of this race before our print deadline. i do know the racing was good and the sport seems to be growing. Flat track racing is fun to spectate and probably just as fun to do. Where else can you find twelve guys running 450 singles wide open within inches of each other for twelve laps straight? When you get a chance, do yourself a favor and check out a flat track race near you.

MASon DiXon SHoRt tRAckDelta fairgrounds • September 22, 2006 • by MRA

Ken Yoder (57) leads the entire race and wins a cool $1000.00 in the controversial open Mod A main event.

AMS rider Devin barada chose the Mason Dixon Short track to

make his racing debut.

Henderson wins an action packed 40+ main that ended with a photo finish..

the intermission show had the crowd on its feet. FMX baby!!

All three events at the Delta Fairgrounds this year saw record turnouts.

WHAt iS the average ‘race-span’ of a rider? How many years average Joe race for? You started young, maybe your dad or uncle got you a cycle; you ride a while, started racing, becoming a good local rider and …

a) You fall in love for the first time (you’re 14) and break up with racing because your girl don’t like to get dirty + you broke your arm twice last year, its sucks (if not go to section b).

b) You turn 16, buy a car to hang out with the (wrong) kids, slack off on your bike maintenance, blow it up and can’t afford to fix it due to car payments. And you want to save for that cool sound system. Your parents won’t pay to fix the dead bike ‘cause you’re old enough now’ (if you make it go to c).

c) You study enough in the back of the truck, on your way back from the races; you make it to college and put your dream of championships asleep for a few years. they will never wake up. (if you didn’t make to college, proceed to d)

d) to afford racing you get a good job, end up starting your own business to make more $$ (yea, those expensive four stroke…). now you not having time to race anymore, plus you have a wife to take to the mall and house payment….

With so many variable to stop you from getting on your race bike on any given week end, it’s truly understandable to see people going in and out of the sport. but a few of us keep racing not matter what. not for the money, not for the fame (maybe 1% of us make a living racing) or anything that make sense to the common mortal. We are doing it for the passion and love of Motocross racing.

i first meet Jason ‘Jay” esterly in 1997 at a local D6 race. because we both live in the reading area, we end up going practicing together a few times and become friend. He was 21 years old. His goals at the time were clear: to turn A, be a good rider and have fun pushing his own limits. And that’s exactly what he did for the last ten years, managing to successfully navigate around all the things that life throw at you (see a, b, c and d).

today Jay is living his passion just like back in the day. 110% committed.

How long have you been riding?25 years. Started at 6 and i’m 31! How did you get involve in the sport? My parents bought me a mini bike for

christmas when i was in kindergarten. i crashed the hell out of it for years. i’ve only got into racing in my early 20’s when my friend Kevin cobb took me to englishtown to race. Man, i was so pumped that i didn’t

get a minute of sleep the night before! it was great!

So, you’ve been racing for 10 years?

Yes, as much i could! Like you say, it’s not always easy to keep going. it’s difficult to explain non-racers why we love the sport so much and that it’s not a big deal to go back to work on Monday all busted and tired…

What’s your biggest accomplishment in MX?

that’s hard to say, i never try to follow a series or anything like that…but last year i won the oMS1 rider of the year award out of 40 riders. My long-term goal was to turn A, wish i did last year!

You help your nephew Zack a lot, tell us about that.

i helped him getting into racing; he’s a city kid and i really wanted him to do something cool that teaches him life values like handling pressure, perseverance, competitiveness and accomplishing goals.

So you take him to all the races with you?

Yes, we’ve been doing this together for 8 years; he’s turning 16 this year so i’m looking forward to have him taking me to the races! He just started racing 125cc this year, but he broke his wrist the 3rd race of the season.

What do you do for a living?i have my own outdoor maintenance

company “tJ ceZAr ProPertY MAintenAnce”; i used to be a DJ back in the days!

You‘ve got involve into promoting races too?

Yes, i help putting together the pit bike race and the freestyle show at the Mountain Spring Arena this year, it was a great show. next year we’ve plan a 4 races 50’s arenacross series, we have a bunch of sponsors line up and you will hear about it in the spring!

What’re your goals for the future?i need to stay healthy (i just broke my

wrist; racing!) and be competitive in the A class. i really want to kick butt in the +25A and 30+A, and race as much as possible.

How do you manage to fit racing between your busy business and your family?

it’s very hard and this is why you don’t see me at every races!

When motocross becomes the main subject at marriage counseling, you have to let off a bit!

What’s your motto?it’s better to be a racer for a day that a

spectator for life! What is your favorite track?etown and any indoors tracks …. but

Pagoda is my backward; they take good care of the riders there, and the new track is really cool too!

Thank you Jay and keep on going!

new bike setup tips:

this is the time of year when many of us are getting new bikes and quads. unfortunately for some buyers, the AMA has thrown a wrench into things (tech tip pun…lol) with the new class structure. this has many new bike buyers as well as dealers on hold with their new bike decisions until the AMA’s final vote in november.

For those of us that have bought new bikes or will be buying soon, here’s a checklist of things you should be doing to your bike before you ride or after a few rides:

tighten all nuts and bolts. loctite where needed.

tighten spokes check tire pressurecheck all fluid levels oil air filter

break in using petroleum oilcheck steering head nutrepack steering head bearingsrepack swingarm and linkage

bearingsrepack wheel bearingsSet suspension sag – change

springs if neededoil cables check free play in clutch leverLube throttle tubeSet perch clamp tension to allow

perches to rotate in a crashSafety wire grips

Most new bikes arrive in the u.S. with very little grease in places such as the steering head, swingarm, and linkage. the reason is that the ePA goes ballistic with anything of an oil substance oozing from the crates when they arrive here. this also applies to wheel bearings. You can remove the seal of your wheel bearings, grease the bearings,

and then re-install the seal. use a small pick or screwdriver to carefully remove the seal so it’s not damaged. Don’t forget to do this throughout the year. i do mine every time i change tires. check your air filter too, i’ve seen un-oiled filters on new bikes.

For those of you who will re-valve your suspension, the bearing grease can usually wait until after a few hours of ride time. it’s best to ride the bike for 2-3 hours before any suspension work. As the working parts inside your suspension seat in, they contaminate the suspension fluids. even if you don’t re-valve your suspension, you should change the oils after the first few hours of ride time. And if you don’t re-valve, you should at least change springs if needed for your rider weight. Manufacturers install springs for an average size rider. check your owners manual for weight ranges of the standard springs in your bike. if you’re on a big bike and under 150 lbs or over 180, the springs are probably not right for you. Don’t forget to set your sag!

chances are that your bike has only been started by the dealer. to

break in a bike properly i recommend warming up the bike and then letting it cool down. Do this two or three times and then ride for an hour or so without revving too high. i also highly recommend using a petroleum based oil for break in. A synthetic oil actually lubricates too well and doesn’t allow the rings to seat properly. After the break in you can use your full synthetic or semi-synthetic (better for clutch non-slippage). Do this same procedure after a top end rebuild.

You’ll also want to tighten your spokes several times after the first few rides. As the spoke nipples seat into the rims they become loose.

Following some of these tips may help you avoid a DnF in the upcoming season and save some money on replacing parts. good luck and stay safe!

1PAgoDA Pit Bike1st ever night Pit Bike Race • october 14, 2006 • by MRA

Saturday night october 14th marks yet another milestone for the Pagoda Motorcycle club. it was a special night in a way, it was the eve of the drawing for the Pit bike giveaway to benefit downed rider and Pagoda club member Kyle greenwalt.

the folks from Pagoda, blackmans cycle and Motographx organized a Pit bike race under the lights to allow the racers of the area to have a flat out great time and to help boost the raffle to benefit the greenwalts.

the track was first class for the 90+ riders that showed up to do battle on these mini monster motorcycles. How else do you explain a full blown 125cc powerplant shoved into a frame size that would be more suitable for your five year old? Don’t get me wrong, classes were offered for all age groups with motors ranging in size from 50cc stock right on thru open modified. but the real treat comes in watching grown men maneuver these mini rocket ships around a made exclusively for minis MX course. the Pagoda crew did a great job of this, in talking with racers during the event; they all loved the track layout and design.

the racing action included two 8 lap motos in 13 different classes. tonight saw the return to racing of gap racings eric Sebastian. Sebastian raced in two different classes and he definitely showed us that he still knows how to get a motorcycle around an MX track. today, most racers own some type of Pit bike and many of the regulars showed up to have a blast racing on a Saturday night. there were some serious Pit bike racers there as well. there is a group that seeks out pit bike racing wherever they may find it, they spend thousands on these mini monsters and they take their racing very seriously.

Probably the best part of the night came in the fact that local sponsors once again stepped up to the plate and offered over $4000.00 in goodies to be given away at this event. Most stepped up for two reasons, one to benefit the sport and two, too support the greenwalt family.

if you get a chance please thank the sponsors of this event, let them know that you appreciate what they do. Also if you can, please continue to support Kyle greenwalt. He is a strong individual and has made great strides in his recovery process. With your help and Kyle’s will i’m sure we will see him back on the track before you know it.

And keep an eye on MrA, i’m sure this won’t be the first and only Pit bike race that Pagoda will run. they’re already talking about next year and rumor has it there may even be a series in the works.

the Pagoda Pit bike course rocked.

Alex Maldet leads the way in the Youth Mid Stock class.

Pagoda club member Johnny Mullen had a blast flying his Xr70.

gap racings eric Sebastian looked to be back in prime race form.

brent Plyler flies high in Youth 50 open racing action.

big congrats to taylor bardo who won the Kyle greenwalt crF50 courtesy of blackmans cycle. Kyle was on hand at Pagoda and picked the winning ticket on Sunday. thank you to everyone who purchased tickets or made donations to Kyle and his family. the raffle is over but you can still donate to Kyle’s fund. He has a long road ahead of him so lets all help him through it. Huge thanks to all who helped with the bike. bob Jones of blackmans cycle who donated the bike, Keith from Motographix who donated all the graphics, two brothers racing, Keith from KSr wheels for the “Killer rims” and AHP mini’s for the bling Kit. thanks

again and Keep Supporting Kyle!!!!

2 DutcHMen MX PARkRound #12 • PA State H.S. Series • october 6, 2006 • by MRA

round #12 of the bP Promotions PA State Harescramble Series found itself at the new Dutchmen MX Park. earlier in the year this round was kinda up for grabs as everyone new that the Flying Dutchmen was for sale but no one new the future of the facility. Would there be racing there in the fall or could you make an offer on a new condo instead?

Anyhow it all worked out and the harescramble racers from the area found themselves back at the same location, but what they found was much different than what they were used to. For some change is good, but for others it can be a struggle for a while. it seems we all adapt sooner or later and in the case of the new Dutchmen MX Park, it seems the sooner you can adapt, the better off you’ll be.

the new owner promises change for every harescramble race at his track. After all isn’t that what makes a harescramble appealing? A new course to race over different terrain, cool. construction continues as we speak and by the time you’re reading this issue i’m sure the course will have changed again.

the 12th and final round of the series was a good one with many classes being decided on this day. All year long the racing action was intense in the 86-200 c class. this is where most of the youth riders move as they get onto the big bikes. Your 2006 champion is Dustin

Moffitt, Dustin battled all year long with both Jeremy nease and bobby Kershaw. All three had a great year with Dustin being consistent all year. He had some struggles the last few rounds with bike issues and flat tires, etc. but Dustin finished third today to wrap up the crown for 2006.

in AtV racing action the series battle was found in the Vet A division. Jason Hughes had a good lead going into round # 10 but a DnF cost him valuable points on that day. in today’s race Hughes found himself in a three way battle for the State championship. in the end he would win the day but he would end up second in the series to Mike Johnston. the two tied for points thru out the series but Johnston had more wins so the title goes his way.

in the main event today both Jerod Stoner and eric rodgers would DnF allowing 200 A rider Jason Sipe to not only win his class but the overall. Stoner experienced two flat tires thru out the day with rodgers getting tangled up with a lapped rider causing him to rip his fuel petcock right off the tank. Sipe would go on for the win followed closely by Andrew Delong in second. in 250-open A racing action, tyler Mccreight would take

the brX Honda to the win.one more change all state harescramble

4 2006 MDRA BAnquet2nd Annual Awards Banquet • october 7, 2006 • by MRA

this years MDrA Awards banquet and Fun Day was held at the Doublin gap Motocross Park in early october. over 300 attendees came out to watch the awards presentation, to take part in a catered lunch and to get some track time in on the main Doublin race course.

“A really tricked out Pit Bike was donated by Motographx and a Kawasaki ATV by

Criswell Powersports...” the MDrA in only its second year continues

to grow and to offer great incentives to their racers to participate in their series. over $30,000.00 in cash and merchandise was awarded at this year’s banquet with the big winner being expert rider greg Pamart who took home $2400.00 in year end cash for winning 25+ A, 30 + A and 250 A. this was in addition to the great payouts at each and

every round of the series.A really tricked out Pit bike was donated

by Motographx and a Kawasaki AtV by criswell Powersports, both were given away by random drawing. in addition the series is also sponsored by industry giant tucker rocky Distributing. they are the parent company to MSr, Answer racing and Pro taper. the top three racers in many classes received free riding gear and i believe for 2007 they are going to pay back to top five.

2007 promises to be even bigger and better for the MDrA. MSr and Answer are on board again, they will have Suzuki contingency in

addition to Yamaha. there is a new venue in Pleasure Valley raceway and the sponsors continue to roll in weekly. there will be some new class structures and still that awesome year end payout that the MDrA is becoming known for.

if you are looking for a great series to be a part of, that loves to give back

to the racers, then you owe it to yourself to check this one out. Log onto their website at www.masondixonriding.com or give them a call at (717) 249 -6036 to get all of the details.

round # 17 of the District 6 ultimate MX Series came to the Happy ramblers Motorcycle club in Hanover, PA. Along with it came many of the districts fastest racers to chase the last few available district points and the manufacturer’s contingency being offered on the day.

the ultimate Series was scheduled to be wrapped up by now, but one round still remains at the Atco MX Park on november 5th. their round was originally scheduled for early october but scheduling conflicts moved it back, the final round will offer double championship points which could make the series very interesting in some classes. See the complete break down on the District 6 website at www.amadistrict6.com.

Some classic battles took place at today’s round with 50cc (7-8) hotshots John Sheaffer and Sean Knoll swapping moto wins with Sheaffer coming out on top. they have both attended the same number of rounds and Sheaffer had a four point lead coming into today’s race. this one will come down to the final at Atco to see who will be crowned 2006 champion.

in other 50cc (4-6) racing action garret beam was able to put a few needed points up on Zakary Shaffer in today’s round. the two were only points apart coming in but beam grabbed the overall today with Shaffer finishing farther back in the standings.

65cc ace trevor Shaffer (Zaks older brother) was also at Happy today trying to

solidify his points lead. Shaffer had some epic battles today with both Jake runkles and robert Allen neither of which are chasing ultimate points but it kept Shaffer sharp coming into the final at Atco.

With mini racer Frankie Lettieri off in Vegas winning the (12-15) World Arenacross crown the door was left wide open in the Supermini class for racers like tyler Hawk and tyler connor to grab the few extra points they needed to make it interesting coming into the last round.

As you can see folks, it really isn’t over until the fat lady sings, or at least until the

last round is in the books. be sure to be at Atco in november to see who wins the gold; i’m sure it will get interesting. And be sure to

check out MrA online to view all of today’s event photos.

Keeping your CoolBy al Carrwww.reactive-suspension.com

the year 1981 was a banner year in the world of MX as it marked the first year that liquid cooling (Lc) became available to the general public. Lc allowed for tighter engine tolerances and significantly reduced power losses due to excessive heat. engine performance levels could be pushed higher now that the heat these engines generated could be dissipated more efficiently.

the design of a cooling system is relatively simple. We have a heat exchanger more commonly known as a radiator, we have carefully thought out fluid passages that surround the hottest parts of an engine, we have a pump to move the fluid through the system and hoses to connect the various components. the majority if not all of the heat generated in an engine comes from the combustion process. As a result the cooling passages are located around the cylinder and the head. now lets look at each of these components and their functions.

the radiator’s job is to dissipate the heat to the outside air. Differing temperatures when in contact will always try to equalize, just like a hot cup of coffee left on the kitchen table, in time will lose its heat to the ambient temperature of the air in the room. A radiator acts in the same way but its design makes it much more efficient. Modern radiators are constructed of Aluminium for light weight and to facilitate quick heat transfer. When the heated fluid enters the radiator it flows through passages in the core that are only a millimeter wide, we see these as the bits which connect the top and bottom portions of the radiator. the reason the passages are so narrow is to reduce the volume of the fluid so it sheds heat quicker. think about how quickly a cup of coffee gets cold versus a swimming pool at the same temperature. the bigger the mass or larger the volume the more slowly it will shed heat. between these channels are strips of Aluminium less than one tenth of a millimeter thick. We see these as the squiggly lines, these are the cooling fins, and they are laid out the way they are to create maximum cooling area.

As the hot fluid flows through the core it sheds heat to the core channels and then to the cooling fins. While the bike is moving, air is constantly passing through these fins and heat is transferred to the air and carried away. by the time the fluid has passed through the radiator(s) a significant amount of heat has been dissipated and the cooler fluid flows back into the engine to start the process all over again. the cooling fins are

very easily clogged and damaged so i recommend never running the bike without the factory louvres fitted. it is vitally important to keep these fins free from mud and avoid getting a pressure washer too close. A pressure washer has enough force to fold the cooling fins blocking the passage of air through the radiator and significantly reducing its effectiveness. When looking through your radiator you should see daylight between each core channel. if a large number of your cooling fins are folded they can be restored by use of a radiator comb if you can find one.

As i said heat is generated by the combustion process. As combustion takes place the heat generated flows into the cylinder head and piston. the piston sheds heat to a large degree through the piston ring and into the cylinder, the rest is transferred into the oil which in turn sheds it to other components and possibly through an oil cooler if so equipped. As the heat migrates it quickly reaches the cooling passages where it is transferred to the fluid and carried away. in two strokes this process is much more efficient than in modern four stroke engines where excessive heat is a major bone of contention. i will talk more about this in a future article.

the water pump is designed to move the cooling fluid through the system at a specific pace. not too fast so it has time to shed heat while in the radiator, but not too slow that it boils in the engine. A specific operating temperature must be reached and maintained for your engine to perform to its maximum. Some of the earliest internal combustion engines didn’t have pumps but rather relied on the thermo-siphon principle which states that circulation is achieved by the hotter fluid rising through the system while the cooler fluid settles. this was oK for very low performance engines but we need a little help.

the major component in the pump is the impeller, this is the part that looks like a fan on steroids. the number of vanes on the impeller and their shape are what determine the pumps flow rate. Since the impeller is driven by the crankshaft its maximum rotational speed can be calculated based on maximum engine rPM an important piece of information if we want to avoid cavitation in the pump assembly. that too is for another time though.

the one item i haven’t covered is the coolant fluid itself which i will save for next month. till then keep the rubber side down.
