H a p p y Memorial Day everyone. i guess the big question of the month is: is it spring yet? or maybe

by the time you are reading this, it might be summer. Will it be one of those years when it goes from 30 to 90? time will tell.

Anyhow, back to the holiday. At a time when it has never been more important to recognize those that have served our country, no matter what your feelings towards our current military situations. Please thank and honor those that have served and died for your freedoms and those that are currently fighting to give us all the privileges that we enjoy as americans today. it is because of those brave americans that you and i can participate in this great sport of motorcycle racing.

i know it’s been a tough start to the season. Many races have been either cancelled or re-scheduled to a later date. We will do our best here at MrA to keep you abreast of these changes. it’s affected every one of the local series in all disciplines, hopefully things will be shaping up by the time this issue hits the streets.

this month offers a full schedule of racing activities, no matter what your fancies. every weekend in May is packed full of potential racing action and we even get that bonus with the Memorial Day holiday. Path Valley Speedway is hosting the ne Amateur national Flat track championships to kick off the weekend and both Atco and DMX offer mx racing on Monday the 28th. be sure to check the event schedule here in our pages so you don’t miss a thing.

As always we will be out at your events covering as many of your races as possible. Please remember to check our website each Monday to view and purchase event pictures. While there, make sure you check out our “contributors corner” too. there are many great photog’s out there covering the racing action each and every weekend and most of them can be linked right from our site.

to B or Not to BAs i discussed last month, i recently returned to racing the Vet b class last season after a 6 year hiatus. in that time i did not enter one AMA event and i barely managed to take the bike out for practice, even occasionally. to say my riding was rusty would be an understatement. So much so, in order to loosen that rust, i would say you could skip the liquid wrench, and go straight for the torch.

the first few events i entered upon my return were humbling to say the least. i placed dead last. not the kind of dead last where you had a good ride, with your own moto still in sight, but the kind of dead last where you’re all alone with the next moto approaching in the distance. in the next couple of events, came the split gates, with the Vet A riders heading out first. not much better for my self esteem, as i was being passed by the A riders, and losing out on my last lap in the process. At least my consolation prize was to exit the track with other riders.

in one instance, there was a mix-up in the split gates, and the solution offered? You guessed it, split the gate between the b and c riders. Yeah, i know what you’re thinking; you’re figuring my ego is safe here, right? Well, not exactly. i was now being passed by a couple of c riders. At this point, i can guess what you’re probably thinking. either i probably couldn’t ride well before my hiatus, so what should i really expect. or, that if i was a decent rider before my return, now i should consider permanent retirement…

if you’re thinking the latter, you guessed correctly. in fact, when i left racing in 1999, i averaged a top 5 finish in a class of 20 or more and i was a mere 6 points from turning A (when they were not using the rPV point system then). So you can say, this was a fairly tough blow to my ego. At first i tried to rationalize my poor results with creative excuses such as “i had the only old 2-

Stroke 250 in a class full of shiny new 4-Stroke 450s” or “My rattled nerves from being off for 6 years, caused poor starts and sloppy riding”. but what became clear in my observation of others, in somewhat similar situations, was that these were, just as how they sounded - mere excuses. With my crappy results evident and poor excuses dismissed, the true realization surfaced. it was difficult keeping up with the more consistent riders. this ultimately brought me to the big question. Do i request to move back down to the c class?

now, according to the AMA, it is possible to move from b to c, and there is a process in place to do this. but even for consideration to change your class, there are some criteria that have to be met first, such as “no rider is to be classified as a c rider if the rider competed prior to the current racing season unless he normally finished in the lower 30% b events entered.” oK, but this is quite vague and primed for various interpretations. What is defined as “normally?” Does normally consider the possibility of entering a couple of races with low turnout where you earned a couple of points practically by default? Secondly, what is considered as prior to the current season? My prior season was 6 years ago. So what to do? if i stay in the b class, it could be a very long and discouraging season. if i drop to the c class it could offer a more encouraging competitive season. What is missing here is that neither the AMA nor the District for that matter can predict whether or not i have the ability to bounce back to where i left off or, if so, how quickly that could happen. i think this is something that can only be determined by the rider. All the statistics in the world, on your season, the tracks you favor, the class you ride and riders you compete against, cannot shed more insight on what you are potentially capable of accomplishing. More important is what you know deep down, and are willing to put into it. given this perspective, i ultimately chose to remain in the Vet b class.

the end result was that i completed my first season back, averaging mid pack and i was happy with that. i believe that the c and b classes are appropriate steps in advancement that provide a necessary fundamental balance. if i were to drop down a class, my guess is that it would soon be obvious that i am disrupting this balance. granted, it’s nice to win, but i wouldn’t like winning if i really felt i rightfully belonged back in the b class, even if it meant bottom or mid pack finishes for the rest of the year. i just want to ride where i belong and have fun doing it. besides, i think the enthusiasm in bench racing is really more about the virtuous stories you share about how you got across the finish line and not so much in what order.

Your latest Hotshot is another prospect that we have been tracking for a while, Zack Smith from Abbottstown, PA. Zack began riding at the young age of 4 on the ever popular Honda Xr50. He spent a few years riding around the back yard as he gradually progressed to the bigger bikes. it was five years ago at the Foot of Mountain when Zack took his first shot at competition in the 85 (7-11) class and the result was a third place finish. i’ve been watching Zack ride for the last couple of years and he has always been a top 10 guy in his class. Matter of fact, two years ago Zack won the track Points at Foot of Mountain in the 85cc (7-11) group by consistently finishing in the top of his class. in 2006 he moved up to the 12-15 age group where he continued to do well. Last year Zack finished third overall in the PA State Series and second in District 6 points.

i was always aware of Zack and his racing family as i attended the races but it was just last fall when i kept noticing that bright orange # 7 KtM always up in the front of the pack. i watch a lot of kids come up thru the ranks and they’re all great kids, but it’s really cool when you see one of them really find their groove. Like i said before, Zack was always there but he wasn’t like some of the “naturals” who are just always out in the lead. All of the sudden, i believe Zack has transformed into one of those “naturals”.So far this season, Zack has attended 3 PA State Harescramble rounds. the result has been 3 - 85cc

(12-15) wins. on top of that, not only has Zack been winning his class but he’s been up there mixing it up with the Supermini’s and doing a real good job.

Watch out for this young man from South central PA - i believe his race face has arrived and i don’t think it will be going anywhere soon. besides that he seems like a very nice kid from areal great family. be sure to watch out next month, who knows where we’ll find our next MrA Kenda tire Hotshot. the season opener was held the weekend of March 24th – 25th at Happy ramblers, and for those of you that don’t know, Happy ramblers is owned and operated by it’s members which means all the work done there is strictly done on a volunteer basis. that being said, i would like to

thank and congratulate the staff and members for their dedication, fortitude, and countless hours that were put in to making this race happen.As some of you know, the area had 8-12 inches of snow on top of days of rain leading into this race. Despite that fact, they managed to have the track in awesome shape Sunday, although practice had to be cancelled Saturday due to more rain with the hopes of saving the track for Sunday. the club and its members were dedicated to pulling this race off no matter what, for the love of the sport, the commitment to the MDrA and to you the riders. All of this was done with great courtesy and professionalism. the members worked tirelessly to make sure the track was ready Sunday and in addition, that every one of you made it both in and out of the race safely, even at the sacrifice of the facility itself. the girls at sign up worked effortlessly to get everyone registered and ready to ride. i can’t even begin to tell you how many soaking wet workers put in countless

hours on the track and facility not only this weekend but throughout the week as well. i stopped to thank President, randy baker for making sure every last one of you made it out safely and for making it all happen. Although randy himself spent most of

the weekend covered in mud and soaked to the bone he said he couldn’t have done it without the girls in the office, especially Sharon Fisher and he wanted to make sure the girls and all the members received special thanks. He said just a simple thanks makes it all worth while. So please the next time you are at ramblers give the entire staff a special thanks, i know i was especially grateful for them pulling my family and new motorhome out of the muddy back field at 9:30 pm Sunday night. they took great care in getting us out and they treated each and every one of the people they pulled out as if it were their own family and for that i am thankful. i hope you guys finally got home warm and dry Sunday night!Happy had a record turn out of over 680 riders, not including spectators, family and friends, despite the conditions to race this weekend. We had riders from up and down the east coast join us. the numbers and magnitude of riders continues to grow each year with this series. it

was great to see you all again at MDrA sign up and nice to meet all of the new faces. the MDrA continues to grow and gain support as well as offer more to the riders with each and every season. the MDrA continues to be a very family oriented series. it’s a great place for riders of all ages to come with their families, make new friends, get seat time with Saturday practice and continue to grow and learn as riders as the MDrA continues to attract riders of all abilities. i would also like to thank the Yentzer Family from Doublin gap. Without their leadership, outstanding organizational skills and the years of motocross experience they bring as a family, the MDrA would not be what it is today. And thank you Mrs. Yentzer for the phenomenal turn around Sunday on the new membership cards. Many people told me they greatly appreciated it.Happy rambler’s, you guys are AWeSoMe, you made the impossible possible. AMA Racing Announces Youth Hare Scramble Series April 12, 2007 PicKerington, ohio (April 12, 2007) – AMA racing has announced the creation of the AMA Western region Youth Hare Scramble championship Series. in its inaugural year the series will feature three rounds; two in california and one in oregon. Future plans call for the series to expand into all AMA regions.

According to AMA off-road racing Manager chuck Weir, the progression of young racers is a primary goal of the new series. “this one-of-a-kind series will develop the off-road competitors of tomorrow while letting participants hone their racing skills in an appropriate environment,” said Weir. “this is a real step forward in getting younger riders involved with off-road racing.”

riders as young as age four can compete in the 50cc class. the series will feature classes open to youngsters up to the age of 15. girls between the ages of 12-15 will have their own class.

Weir added that the series will focus on safety while ensuring that riders compete at their own age and skill level.

when i won the eceA championship. i wanted to do the gncc’s again but the cost of traveling and racing was adding up. there wasn’t much money to be had at the time so i didn’t have purse money to fall back on.. When i look at the series now, many of the guys i battled with then are still at it and have some sort of factory ride now.. Maybe i should have hung in there for another year, but it was hard to go and not make money, when i could stay home and go to englishtown and make a few hundred..

You are a well rounded competitor. You have experienced success racing off-road, mini-bikes and regular motocross at various points in your career. How do you choose an event to race on a given weekend? now i just go to whatever i feel like doing that weekend.. And if i’m not feelin it i can stay home without feeling like i missed something, or that i owe it to someone to be at a certain race. that’s what still keeps me going, the fact that if i want to Moto i can, if i want to do an enduro or harescramble i can, if i want to race my pitbike i can, and if i want to stay home and go out on my boat or jet ski or go fishing i can without any guilt. Sometimes i will decide to race at 8pm on Saturday night.

which aspect of racing do you enjoy the most, motocross, pit bike or off road? it depends, i have had a blast doing each one.. i enjoy going to see all the people i have met over the years.. i got my Moto family and my offroad family, as different as Moto and offroad is they are both the same, we all love racing bikes.. the only thing i don’t enjoy is getting hurt and seeing people get hurt.. it would be hard to choose which is my favorite, that is why i still do all 3..

How do you stay competitive against the next group of young riders coming up? When i turned A in 1990 i was that young guy, all i wanted to do was win. i did some crazy stuff then.. When i watch these kids today, i can’t believe what some of them will do or can do on a bike.. i have no interest in riding like that now.. i don’t get to ride that much these days, most of the time my day of riding is at the races.. i just go out and ride to my limit, i don’t push over my limits anymore. i still have some talent but just lack the drive to win and hang it out.. i’m happy to just ride and get out unhurt these days..

what is your favorite racing memory? i have had many good times over the many years racing, finishing 9th in sx, finishing 9th in a moto at budds creek, getting a 6th overall at the uSgP in unadilla, finishing 2nd overall at the Delaware national enduro, My 10th overall in gncc, living in FL with a bunch of friends a couple of years over the winter months, going to canada to race some SX races, going to Loretta Lynn and the Mini olympics a couple times.. but all the great time spent traveling with the family and my close friends going to the races is something i will always remember.

what are your plans for this season? i’m just out there to have fun, hit a few races.. no plans i’m just going with the flow.

Looking past 2007. what is next for Joel denlinger? Well my 5 year old son hunter just started riding a PW 50 this year.. So i guess i’ll see where that leads me..

From the early days of Micky Kessler to today’s stars like Jason Lawrence and barry carsten, new Jersey riders have always had that something special. Tell us a little about yourself and your family etc. .... i’m a union boilermaker, married with 2 kids (Michelle, Hunter and Haleigh). i grew up in chatsworth, nJ and now i’m in barnegat, nJ.. Started racing when i was 13 in 1987, spent 7 years racing the AMA nationals and supercross, i had 6 AMA national numbers in a row, till i stopped racing pro mx and started offroad.. Away from bikes i like to go fishing, go surfing, jet skiing, spend the day on the boat, or hang with the family.

You grew up around racing motorcycles and your dad was a top racer back in the day. Is that what got you started racing? Yea i grew up at the track for sure. My dad raced here in the District 6 series in the 70’s and 80’s, he also did some trans Am’s and the Florida winter series. So you can say i was born into racing bikes.

As a top amateur in the area you moved on to the nationals. despite good finishes you never got that factory ride. do you think if it was 10 years later you would be that guy in the semi? i had this same talk at the Kawi race a few years ago with Jeff chambers from team green, and he said the same thing.. if i was 10 years younger things would have been different for me and many more guys i raced with. i had some top 10 finishes in both the SX’s and outdoors. i’m not saying that i could have been a rc or Stewart, but i might have been a top 15 or so guy. but you never know how much better it could have been, with more support and better bikes you never know. i rode stock bikes that had little motor work and some suspension upgrades, but nothing compared to what some of these guys have now.. but i’m not going to say i could have been better, i did as good as i could with what i had..

In addition to your skills racing motocross you are also a very successful off-road racer. Tell us a little about some of your successes. i always rode in the woods. Where i grew up there was endless trails for enduros that were run in the area, most of the trails were on the way to go to my riding spots. And after my dad stopped racing MX in the mid 80’s he started racing enduros, so i was around the woods races a lot too. i raced a lot of harescrambles and some enduros for fun and it was also a good way to stay in shape. i never really was too serious about it because MX is where the money was and there was no money in offroad at that time. i have raced with Mike Lafferty a lot here in the local eceA races, Mike is a 7 time national enduro champ, and i have been able to beat him a few times and also have had some great battles with him. i also was able to win the eceA Harescramble championship in 2001.

You were also a top 10 gncc racer. what kept you from pursuing that career further? i raced a couple gncc’s in FL when i was staying down there in the winters, and when i finally stopped racing MX and SX in 1998 i tried another gncc which was only 10 minutes down the road from me.. i finished 5th overall in the Pro class. From that race on i did the rest of the gncc races that year. the next year i did the whole series starting the year off with a top 10 finish, and i didn’t fall out of the top 10 in points all year. i had another 5th overall and many more top 10’s. i finished the year 10th overall in points. i got a Factory Husky ride for the next year. i had some good races that year, but had some bad ones as well, new team new bike we had a learning curve to deal with. i ended up 15th overall in 2000. At the end of the year Husky wasn’t really sure what they wanted to do and they were dragging there feet, so i went back to the Suzuki’s i was used to and that’s

Rocky cagno, 9 years old, from Frost Elementary School was inspired from a lemonadestand fundraiser that was being held at the school to raise money to help kids with cancer.

He wanted to have a fundraiser that would include his passion for motocross. The fundraiser in 2006 was held at the Northeast MX Club and was a huge success that we decided to have this benefit annually. With the support of 40 motocross racers ranging from 4 yrs. old to 15 yrs.

old, we had raised over $25,000. The Majority of the money raised came from the racers themselves by collecting donations from their sponsor sheets.

This year’s fundraiser will be held in conjunction with the Raceway park Youth day. The event will include, for riders that participate, hole shot awards for each class and entrance into a bike giveaway.

There will be raffles consisting of goggles, helmet, bike stand and other motocross items along with an intermission demo. The race will be a two moto format for each class.

The Institute For Children helps many children and their families by providing counselors, educational teachers, financial assistance and the research to develop improved treatments and search for a cure. This event will help contribute to the many needs of these children as nothing is more precious than a

child’s life. We are hoping to exceed last year’s total donations for the 2007 benefit andthat everyone comes out to cheer on the racers and help children suffering with cancer.

Saturday March 31st brought several hundred racers and fairly decent weather to the Doublin gap Motocross Park for their annual north east classic warm up race. each year Doublin gap hosts round # 1 of the MSr / Answer north east classic Series at their facility in Shippensburg, PA. each spring hundreds of racers migrate south to get away from the cold and frozen tundra of the north east to chase the prizes and contingencies offered by this series. the north east classic Series is in its 15th year and offers five rounds, the series wraps up on June 17 at Walden MX. there is over $200,000.00 in factory contingencies plus many other prizes and giveaways.

Mark Lynch Mark Lynch of Connellsville, Pa. recently completed instruction necessary to become a Master ATV Safety Instructor. This is according to the latest Bureau of Forestry snowmobile and ATV safety news letter from the DCNR. Mark has been involved with ATV’s from a rider to a racer since their introduction in late 1985. Mark also represented PA and WV riders and racers as an AMA/ATVA congressmen. In addition Mark is an ASI ATV Safety Instructor with years of teaching ATV safety under his belt. Lynch has many sites for ATV training such as Latrobe Speedway (Pleasant Unity), Field of Dreams MX Park (Bosewell Pa),

Connellsville, Indian Creek Valley ATV Club (White Pa), and Gibbon Glade, Pa. Mark has been a volunteer PA ATV safety instructor for many years and has been a leader in our area in the field of ATV safety. Mr. Lynch has helped make the new PA. safety training guides that will be used at most safety trainings. Mr. Lynch in conjunction with Nichole Yiengst (far left) will now provide all ATV safety certification trainings of new volunteer ATV safety instructors, Department of Forestry workers, and D.C.N.R. ranger ATV safety trainings for all of Pennsylvania.

Reno, NV (4/5/2007) - Nathan Beck of Reno, Nevada discovered the American West alone with his quad and ATV Wagon trailer full of gear. He lost his dog twice and checked into a hospital due to hypothermia one night in Idaho. He went through 10 new tires and about 416 gallons of gas during his adventure, plus he maintained a daily journal of the trip.

A humble Nathan explains his insanity, “I want to know what’s on the other side of the mountain, I have the itch to travel. I want to see what is out there. Life is too short.” One of the main reasons why people own ATVs is to explore the back country and enjoy the sense of freedom—Nathan Beck symbolizes this fact and more.

What Nathan did was truly remarkable - historic - inspirational - unbelievable! In July of 2006, Nathan left Reno and traveled north to Canada. He reached the border in about 11 days, averaging 160 miles per day driving on trails and secondary roads. But as he started to head back home, he began to ponder the possibilities of going farther.

“I have always wanted to experience Sturgis and since I was nearly half way there and street legal, I just decided to take a detour,” says Nathan. But he almost didn’t make it, as day 16 in Bozeman, Montana was most difficult for him. “Losing my dog AND the mechanical breakdown was terrible. I was so desperate I was pushing my quad to the nearest gas station saying to myself ‘this is how it ends’, I was thinking

‘I’m getting a U-Haul and I am going home’”, sighs Nathan.

But he had rewarding experiences as well during his 34 day, 5000 mile ATV trip. He explains, “Making it to Sturgis-that was very rewarding for me. People could not believe that I came from Reno on a quad to the rally. But even more rewarding, the very last day of my trip I left at 11AM and drove straight til 1:30 the next morning- 361 miles in one day-my personal best. I could barely get off the quad, I was so tired.”

So far Nathan has put 16,724 miles on a 2004 Yamaha Grizzly in just 3 years of ownership and has no plans of stopping. Nathan takes ‘exploring the back country on an ATV’ to a whole new level. He is scheduling an ‘07 summer trip-- maybe 10,000 miles in 60 days. He is currently seeking sponsors to assist with the mega-ride.

In the previous Wrench Report we discussed basic maintenance. So it only seems fitting that we discuss what type of chemicals are safe to use while performing this maintenance.

Engine OilWe pretty much covered this one in the maintenance article of last month. But for those who missed it here it is. First, you want to see what the manufacture recommends in terms of viscosity and API ratings. Next, does you bike have a wet clutch? And third, does the engine oil lubricate the transmission. If you answered yes to the above two questions then I would only recommend oil that is “MA” rated. I would avoid any oil rated “energy conservative” as that could promote clutch slippage. More to the point, regardless of what bike or quad you have, unless specified by the manufacturer, I would not use any oil that is rated ‘energy conservative.” As far as Mineral verse Synthetic, hold on, that’s in an upcoming issue.

Air Filter OilThe air filter on a bike/quad is subjected to extreme conditions. As such, extra measures should be taken to guard against dust particles entering the engine via the air cleaner. As such special air filter oils were designed to handle this task. These oils become very tacky when exposed to the atmosphere and help to stop the tiny particles of dust from entering the engine. There are many good types out there, and every wrench probably has his/her favorite. A couple that I use and really like is Spectro, PJ1 and Uni. All three offer excellent protection against engine dust inhalation.

GreaseThere are many areas of a bike/quad that need frequent greasing; swingarm linkage, air filters sealing edge, pivot bolts, seals and bearings. The grease that I use and have found to work extremely well under all conditions is Bel Ray Waterproof grease. This stuff works really well for all our maintenance needs. It is waterproof, so it will stand up to the constant punishment of the trail and offers excellent lubrication properties. That is not to say there is not a better grease … but for the money I really like this stuff.

Brake FluidThere are basically two types of brake fluid for bike/quads: denatured alcohol and silicone-based. The designations DOT 3 and DOT 4 are for the first type. DOT 5 is the silicone-based. It is ok to mix DOT 3 and 4, but never mix DOT 5 with either. Most manufactures recommend DOT 4. DOT 5 is said to be superior as it does not absorb water. Personally, if you change it regularly DOT 4 is fine.

Anti-FreezeThere are several different types of available anti-freeze out there. It is important when purchasing this that we remember that our engines are aluminum. I always recommend to my customers to purchase a motorcycle/quad specific anti-freeze. Coolanal is such a product and comes pre-diluted, which really makes things simple.

Never Seize CompoundThis is the silver grease looking stuff. There are many brands and it all does the same thing; keeps things from freezing together. The place where I use this the most is were a steel bolt threads into aluminum. Use it lightly, just enough to cover the area.

Contact CleanerAwesome stuff for cleaning all types of things found on the bike/quad. I like the Bel Ray stuff as it dries fast and leaves no film. It works good to clean dirt from electrical connectors; to cleaning out the threads before applying some loctite.

Loc- TightFor the basic maintenance, there are two you should concern yourself with; Red and Blue. Really simple, red is permanent blue is removable. There are so many different manufactures that I will not attempt to discuss all. I use only loctite brand and there web site lists all applications.

Cable LubeThere are two types of cable lube that I like; Bike Aid and 6&1 by Bel Ray. Both work well when used. The main thing is to periodically lube your cables.

Gasket SealerMyth number one: if a little works good, a lot works better. Not so when it comes to this. Gasket sealer should be used (only when needed) sparingly! Too much of the stuff and it finds its way into places it should not be, like an oil gallery. I only used one type ThreeBond. It is expensive, but it works.

Penetrating OilAgain, there are many manufactures of the stuff and some work really well. PB, the stuff in a yellow can works pretty well. However, it has been my experience that when you go for the penetrating oil, it’s too late. The part is frozen solid and nothing short of a torch is gonna free it up. Again, do your maintenance and you will have no use for the stuff.

WD-40Everybody has this stuff. However, it has its uses and that is as a water displacer, what it was designed for. Sure it works well as a light film lubricant and penetrating oil. But what I like the stuff for is after I wash my unit. I buy it by the gallon and use the little spray bottle they give me and spray the whole thing down and then wipe it down. It works great.

These trails are open during the summer and winter seasons. The summer season runs from the Friday before Memorial Day through the last full weekend in September. The winter season runs from the day following the last day of the regular or extended antlerless deer season as established by the Game Commision through the following April 1. Burnt Mills- Pike County - 7 miles of summer and winter trail. Access is from a parking area on Route 402 one mile south of Porters Lake.Registered Class II ATV’s are permitted on this trail.Contact: Delaware State Forest, HC 1 Box 95A, Swiftwater, PA 18370Phone: (570) 895-4000 Adams & Cumberland Counties- 36 miles of summer trail. During the winter season the trail system is expanded to 42 miles by using some dirt roads that are gated during the winter. Part of the trail system is shared with snowmobiles when there is sufficient snowfall. The trail is located between Big Flat and Pine Grove Furnace State Park. Access to these are from parking lots located at Big Flat along Shippensburg Road about 1-1/4 miles north of its intersection with Route 233 and on Piney Mountain along Bendersville Road south of Pine Grove Furnace State Park. The federally-operated Allegheny National Forest has more than 100 miles of ATV trails. ATV trail season runs from the Friday before Memorial Day through the last Sunday in September, winter season is from December 20-April 1. Contact the Allegheny National Forest Supervisor’s Office, P.O. Box 847, 222 Liberty Street, Warren, PA 16365Phone: (814) 723-5150.Effective July 1, 2002, the Allegheny National Forest implemented the Fee Demo Program for ATV and motorized bike trails. An annual $35 permit fee is required, and can be purchased from any Allegheny National Forest office, and some local vendors, or online at www.fs.fed.us/r9/allegheny. The following trails are within the Allegheny National Forest (ANF). Potter County ride news

Attention all ATV riders. Great news, two Potter County townships have opened up their gravel roads to ATV use. At press time we were able to verify that both Alleghany and Genesee townships now allow registered and insured ATV’s to use their dirt and gravel roads. Helmets must be worn and all traffic laws obeyed. No hard road usage allowed. The rumor mill has it that five other townships have or are in the process of passing the same laws. They are Hector, Harrison, Roulette, Weeden and Hebron townships. Again, please check with the local governments and officials before using roads in these townships. In Alleghany and Genesee the legal roads have been marked with signs allowing ATV usage. One last thing, please be sure to use common sense and obey all traffic laws. This is a huge step in the right direction. Let’s show them that we are responsible riders and more may follow.

Senate Bill Introduce to Amendment Recreational Use Law

History and BackgroundLast year, PaoHV issued an alert seeking co-sponsors for legislation amending the recreational use of Land and Waters Act. the introduction and passage of legislation is among one of the strategies PaoHV has been pursuing to improve accessibility to land for riding.

recently, Sen. bob robbins (r-crawford) reintroduced the legislation. Sen. robbins’ bill is Sb 497. the bill has been referred to the Senate environmental resources and energy committee. the bill must be see favorable action from the committee to be scheduled for a floor vote.

if passed, the measure will provide additional protections for landowners who allow people to ride and recreate on their property. therefore, it will be easier for individuals and clubs to find places to ride.

the three main points of the bill are: 1) Add the word “trail” to the description

of lands covered by the statute, 2) add to words “motorized recreational vehicle riding” to the covered activities specified in the statute, and 3) Add a provision for landowners to recover costs of defending themselves when a suit is dismissed or to be found to be without merit.

Action neededcontact, (call, write or email), your state senator. Make your Senator aware that the bill has been introduced and inform them of their purpose and objectives as listed above. be sure to cite the bill number for easy reference.

Members only:*the 4th of July Parade and Fireworks in conneaut ohio is drawing a bigger crowd each year. it’s turning into an annual event for AtV traction members. the local fire department in conneaut has come to depend on AtV traction for guarding the parameter around the detonation area. the beach inside the break wall is pretty much out of bounds on the day of the Fireworks, and it’s through our help that they accomplish this. We consider it one of the perks of being a member of the club. it’s a full day in the sun and surf! For one day, we get to ride on the beautiful sands and shores of Lake erie. even though it’s a lot of fun, we take this job seriously. For those members planning to attending the 4th of July fireworks, they will be held on the beach, as usual, on July 3rd. bring your sun screen and your bug spray.

Some of us will be at the beach early. You can arrive any time during the day, but be prepared to be there till nearly midnight. it’s a full day! You have to be a club member to bring your quad and join us, but you don’t

have to be a member to enjoy the fireworks. conneaut has one of the best set ups for fireworks in the tri-state area. We have a 3 tiered bluff area adjacent to the beach where the crowd piles in around 8 PM to await the show. if you’re lucky enough to have a boat, it’s even better. the entire lake front is packed with cruisers enjoying the sights.

if you’re driving in by rte 90, get off at rte 7 exit and come north. Follow the rte 7 signs right to the lake. You can’t miss it. *the 4th of July Parade in conneaut will be held on Saturday, June 30. We’ll leave the high School parking lot @ 3pm. Last year we had 24 AtV traction Quads dressed up and rolling down Main Street. Friends, Family, and Fun with ATV Traction

My Wife and i have been avid AtVers since 2001. in the spring of 2004 we were approached by a friend who said he had heard of an AtV club near us in Western Pennsylvania. He asked if we thought we’d be interested in starting or joining such a club. being more fortunate than many others, with riding opportunity right from our driveway, we realized this opportunity could end at anytime. We agreed to give traction a try. For us, this was the beginning of the Venango chapter of AtV traction. We started, as the founders of the club did, with around 20 friends and fellow riders. We voted in officers and advisors and our chapter was accepted into AtV traction. Soon we were passing the word to others and attending meetings to expand our club... and expand, we have! Since 2004 our chapter has grown to 250 plus memberships. We’ve had many great times and new friendships have been formed. With growth comes the task of securing riding opportunity. Since inception, we have secured permission to ride on many acres of land, owned by multiple landowners. We’ve built lasting relationships with not only the landowners, but with the communities surrounding the land as well.

one day, while introducing some new members to the trails and the area, we stopped by an overlook along the way. this site overlooks the winding Allegheny river near the town of Kennerdell, Pa. i can remember stopping here with my family as a small child. unfortunately this overlook, as well as other areas in our neighborhood, have fallen victim to illegal dumping. upon discussion, the club decided to make this our first club project. A clean up plan was put in motion. Members from our chapter, as well as other chapters volunteered and we went to work cleaning up everything from everyday trash to appliances. the turnout was overwhelming and the outcome was even greater. We have now adopted this scenic lookout as an ongoing project and periodically remove anything left behind by those who do not appreciate the true beauty of this site.

Since the cleanup, another organization, the oil Heritage region Alliance, thru grant funding, has completely renovated this site, adding new railing, benches, parking lot improvements, and an informational kiosk. the lookout is again clean and pristine and we are proud to have been a part of this. We have shared many great riding experiences with fellow members on our club trails as well as elsewhere. Attempting

to promote a positive public image is on our minds not only at home, but when we ride other areas as well. A year ago when we rode the Hatfield Mccoy trail system in West Virginia, these same values put us on the front pages of their local newspaper. once again we rose to the occasion for yet another cleanup project within the small town where we were staying. We found the residents warm and friendly, but their main street through town was in bad need of some quick clean up. not even rain slowed the process that Sunday morning, as we scoured the main street with trash bags in hands. Many locals and shop owners stuck their heads out of their doors to ask “What are you guys doing?” and “where are you from?” no one could believe that an AtV club from as far away as we were, was cleaning up the streets of their town. it took us just over a half hour to ride from one end of main street to the other, but the impact we made was more lasting than we would have ever guessed. When we found out we were front page news the following week, we were pleased we took the time to practice what we preach. these are just a few of the things our Venango chapter has accomplished since we’ve began. there is much to benefit new riders in joining an AtV club. Meeting new

people, making new friends, finding new places to ride together, picnics, camping, parades... the list is endless and so is the fun. Many of us have come to realize that working in this club is a lot more like play when done together. Friends, family, and fun are what it’s all about. our club has provided us with many hours of enjoyment. if you don’t already belong to an organized club, you should certainly consider one. remember we are stronger by number and a strong organization helps to get the word out to government and landowners that there are those who appreciate and respect our sport. Although the fate of the weather looked grim for the 2007 High Lifter Mud nationals; when i arrived, i realized that rain would only be welcomed by the AtV enthusiast in attendance. When rolling through the front gates, it is hard to comprehend the size of this event until i reached the top of a hill and gaze upon thousands of 4X4 machines cruising around the grounds. While making my way to the main power line trail, i came to realize that i wasn’t even looking at half the event before.

not only does this event attract nearly 10,000 riders and fans, but many vendors that set up to show off their new products and help answer questions. Several AtV manufactures, including; Arctic cat, can-Am, Polaris, Kawasaki, and Yamaha, were also present on vendor row.

the grounds at the event boasted as much open mud holes as these boggers desired. closed mud holes were restricted for special events only. team gorilla run, Maxxis Mud-A-cross, Moose Mud chic Shootout,

Youth Mug bog, and Supertrapp Mud bog were run in three separate restricted mud pits. the event schedule also included the Dnynojet bad 2 Da’bone contest, a poker run, and an AtV freestyle show.

Team gorilla Runthe team gorilla run was held in a long mud put that ran along the power line. A team of two riders could choose to either ride one or two quads through the length of the pit. nearly a mile long course equated to the two riders with the most endurance being crowned the winners.

Mud-A-crossthe idea for this event was taken from the famous Florida Sippy Hole races. twisting

this concept into true texas style, Mud-A-cross was born for the first time. the oval track was filled with water that

varied from a mere 4 inches to nearly 4 feet. three racers would take the line and the first one to complete two full laps would be victorious.

Mud BogStretching nearly a hundred yards, the mud bog pit is a back woods drag race. replacing asphalt with a soup of mud, five riders would dash across the bog. the mud was deep enough that reaching the other side became a balancing act for many as their AtVs floated across the top of the mud. A simple concept allowed only the skilled riders to reach the finish line.

dynojet Bad 2 da’ Bone contestHeld on vendor row, this contest featured the baddest looking

machines battling it out for the chance to win a key to a new can-Am AtV. entries included everything from mild to wild. in the wild category was a Side-by-Side machine with 45” tires with automotive drive train. Key features among the many contestants included; custom speaker enclosures, air-brushed fenders, custom wheels and nearly every bolt on known to man.

Switching gears, the Akraix Freestyle team had a ramp set up to show the 4x4 enthusiast a different side of AtVing. Derek guetter, co-owner of Akriax, held a mic in one hand, while the other was in a sling, following a recent collar bone injury. Hitting the ramp were team members; Steve Weissinger, caleb Moore, and ben bettis. ben, a Minnesota native, came to texas with hopes of reaching a new level in his freestyle career. He did just that, as he completed his first double grab over the 70 foot gap.

the High Lifter AtV Mud nationals will revisit Jacksonville, tX for 2008, and the excitement is already building. As the 2007 event commences, the crew has already begun planning bigger and better things for next year’s event.

the second round of the Loretta Lynn northeast Area Qualifiers took place Friday, March 30, 2007 thru Sunday April 1, 2007 at tomahawk MX in Hedgesville, WV. tomahawk is one of the most picturesque tracks you will find. Set in the rolling hills of West Virginia it is nestled in a valley that seems almost disconnected from the outside world. owner chad gochenour has made some significant improvements including better parking, improved visibility of the track and a safer paddock area for spectators on the infield of the track, a new concrete start has been added as well . the speaker system made keeping track of the motos easy. there was a great professional flagging team on hand Saturday and Sunday and your announcer kept us on track and was very entertaining. the track is also running in reverse direction this year and the general consensus in the pits is that everyone loved it.

Walking through the pits was almost a lesson in geography with license plates from up and down the east coast and then some, new York, connecticut, illinois, Michigan, Massachusetts, you name it they were in attendance. i had the pleasure of meeting some new and friendly faces from other areas and different states this weekend and i hope to see you all again soon!

Although i was not there for Friday practice, tomahawk had a picture perfect sunny day with an awesome turn out for practice, 410 riders for Saturday’s race and 450 riders for Sunday. Although the weather was over cast and cold much of Saturday, the rains held off until Sunday morning which gave a very slippery start to the first three motos of the day and made for some interesting “transportation” adventures in the pits. by days end, although still damp and cold, the track was in awesome shape and the rest of the motos went off without a hitch.

the racing action was great as usual, and some awesome battles took place, but one name that stood out this weekend was garret toth. garret consistently finished with 6+ second leads all week end, even in the motos where he had to come from behind to finish first in all of his motos. As you all know, this is impressive at a qualifier. garret has spent a lot of time down south riding this winter and it shows. Moreover it is his desire to win, and aggressive riding style that is going to keep him out front and his name something to watch for in the future. garret is off to Vegas

following this race, good luck garret, and i’m sure we will be seeing some impressive finishes from you at the regional’s and at Loretta’s too.Another rider that finished consistently with tremendous leads and went 1 for 1 all weekend was Walker brightwell from cincinnati, ohio. He is a very fast, very smooth mini rider that walked away with each one of his motos with what appeared to be an effortless victory . i’m not familiar with Walker personally, but he is a rider i hope to see again and would love to track his progress.

the racing action was intense as it always is at a qualifier, there were many victories and many disappointments. there are far too many other names and races too numerous to mention in this article. great job to all the riders, i know it was a tough battle this weekend with the temps and the rain. national numbers Kevin Varnes and Shawn baer each took a win in the most competitive classes, open A and Sportsman, respectively, as Path Valley Speedway launched the 07 short track season. the top three in

b o t h were the same as first year

Pro, brandon robinson, finished second in both. With almost 200 riders entered, over one quarter of them were entered in these two classes, necessitating four heats and a pair of consolations to set the final in each. Varnes took the open A lead from Shayna texter, baer and cory texter. by the second lap, baer joined Varnes and put a few lengths on the others chasing the bromley’s Suzuki/American Suzuki Motor co. sponsored Varnes. Varnes and baer battled at the upper edge of the groove, while robinson used the low line to close the gap on the front duo. on the final lap, robinson slipped under baer off the final turn for second. in the Sportsman, baer put his Patriot Harley Davidson/Lucas oils sponsored rotax into the lead over robinson, Ken Yoder, Varnes and cory texter. After having to run the consi, Varnes worked his way past Yoder for third on the fourth lap. this time baer kept the others at bay, winning by a few lengths. After getting caught sleeping on the line for the 30 + final, Yoder woke up quickly and caught early leader, roy Miller off the second turn on lap two for the lead, with rich reynolds and Vince bower several lengths back. Miller stayed close for the remainder of the race.in the past few years, the 250 A class has been virtually non-existent, this year a 250 Sportsman has been added to allow the b 250 riders to test their mettle against the few A 250 riders. Last year’s 250 rider, Shayna texter, took the lead from b rider, Jacob Shoemaker, brandon robinson, nick guiseppe and Sam Wiggins. robinson took second early and pressured texter until she bobbled slightly about halfway. robinson slipped into the lead, but she stayed close to the end. Shoemaker was one of several riders who won two classes, 250 b and open b. in the open win, he took the lead from John Long, Dalton Winkler and chip Lengle. He maintained a constant five length margin over Long, while Winkler and Jordan Harris battled for third the entire distance. the 250 win was similar as he took the lead from Long, with ryan connelly and Sam Wiggins behind. Wiggins took over third after the second lap.

tyler Stacey made his first start on a 125 a winning effort as he took the lead from erin Kissinger and connelly and kept the margin

constant to the end. He also held off rebecca Zafia for the 150 class win. Zafia took the Woman’s class over Amanda Hardy and Kissinger.

Hey everyone,

Well, it’s that time of the month again and here i am sitting inside staring out the window looking at all the rain slowly hitting the ground. What a roller coaster ride of weather we have been having here in the northeast, but that doesn’t stop the racing world from going round. thankful it looks like the weather gods are going to finally cut us a break here within the next couple days. Although the weather has been hectic, we have been hitting some of the local races around the area testing our new bikes and trying new things on them. All of the promoters in our district work their tail off at each and every one of our district races. Darryl baer, John Winsett, Piston Poppers Mc, bill brown and everyone else all promote good shows and should be recognized for a job well done.

it is also good to go back to some of the tracks you grew up racing on like Path Valley and Shippensburg, but recently, i have been putting all of my focus and effort on the “big Fish”. May 26, i head to Springfield, illinois to tackle my 3rd pro national of my young career on a very fast and very racey tt. For those of you that don’t know, a tt is a flattrack with a right hander and a jump. i am really looking forward to this event and i have been at my “Springfield” replica practice track 3-4 times cutting as many laps as possible. With the help of my good friend and fast young motocrosser Justin Frederick, i have been cutting the laps on the motocross track as well. i feel i have improved my tt program each and every year and i’m really looking forward to see where i stack up against the best of the best on a much better and much smoother track then my first two nationals. i know i can get the job done, its just going to take a lot of focus, hard work, and determination.

After two rounds in the books at the VerY rough Daytona Short track, Mike rush leads the AMA Pro Singles series by three points over last years champ Jake Johnson. Kenny coolbeth, the 2006 AMA Pro twins series champion sits a very close third, only 7 points back.

besides riding non stop and getting ready mentally for the heart of my first pro expert season, i have been working on my fitness non stop. i can’t stress enough how important physical fitness is at this stage in the game. the top guys go out there to make a paycheck and support themselves and their families and train and ride every day. i am still adapting to that responsibility at this new l e v e l ,

but i feel training is very important because it is my job to come prepared to these pro nationals in the best shape possible and then some. i feel that my training program is very good right now, but you can always kick it up a notch. An extra couple miles on the bicycle, another set of reps at the gym, and another 25 hard laps at the practice track are a few of the things i have been pushing. not only do i want this for me, but for my sponsors and family as well. they definitely don’t put all this money into my program to see me watching these pro nationals from the bleachers.

it is good to see a lot of the young riders from District 6 riding so well at such a young age. ryan Varnes and Joey Schmidt are only two of the many young kids i think have a lot of potential as they move up through the ranks. My younger sister Shayna will spend her 2007 gunning for the AMA Dirttrack Horizon Award. it is given to the top amateur of the year at the 2007 AMA Dirt track grand championships in Duquoin, illinois in July. i wish her the best of luck as she tries to become the first female ever to win the award. it’s such a good feeling to know that in only 4 full years of racing, we have come so far and it just shows what hard work and determination can do for you. i also wanted to congratulate brandon robinson on great finishes in Florida, which puts him in a very close 2nd place in the AMA Pro-Sport Hot Shoe standings. good luck in the rest of the series brandon!

until the next issue, we will have a couple more local short tracks and more importantly two local tt races to get ready for Springfield, illinois on May 26. the iMDA puts on a press day for us on May 11 to check out the new layout of the tt and to get our set-up ready. there is also a big race in guthrie, oK May 18-20 that we plan to attend. it is for Stock Frame chassis bikes only, so that should be a lot of fun and a great event. until next time, see ya at the track!

& SchoolboyExperience: 6 YearsLast year Andy Johns started the season off well finishing in the front of the pack every moto he raced. unfortunately, Andy suffered a season ending injury, which forced him to undergo rotator cuff surgery. once Andy healed up it was too late to qualify for Loretta’s. but he did race Ponca city and had a strong showing. both he and Dennis spent the winter in Florida riding and training at the Winter Am’s and hope all their hard work paid off for this year. Here’s what they had to say.

what are your goals for this year?Dennis: top five at Loretta’s in the Schoolboy 14-16 class. Hopefully top twenty in the MX Lites class because there are so many fast riders in that class with factory support i just hope to be in the mix. Andy: this year i want to make a name for myself on a national level. obviously i want to qualify for Loretta’s and finish top ten at all the nationals this year.

How would you like to finish locally and who do you think will be your toughest competition?Dennis: Well locally i definitely have the speed to run up front with clark, Plotts and cook for sure. i’m not going to set my goals to high but i will be disappointed if i’m not upfront every moto battling for the win.Andy: Locally i really always want to be upfront, i just want to be consistent week in and week out. Locally my closest competition is tyler Hawk, Frankie Lettieri, and Kameron Page, but most of all myself, and the track.

what are you future goals for your racing career if this year goes well at Loretta’s?Dennis: i would like to do the same thing that most amateurs are doing lately, going pro a little later in there amateur career to make sure i have to speed to run on the pro level. My goal is to go pro in two years when i’m nineteen. Hopefully get some factory support as an amateur, and possibly move to california with Lowell Spangler to ride and train year round. i want to be a top 5 contender at all the nationals in the expert class next year.Andy: of course i would like to become a pro rider, and get a factory ride. i think that’s every racers dream. it’s just a matter of how bad you want it.

it was cold and overcast for the Motorcycle clubs first event of the year. their actual opener was cancelled just weeks prior due to rain and snow and the club was determined to get this event off as planned. Although the forecast looked bleak, the rain held off until the last two motos of the day. this event also welcomed the Delmarva MX Series to Pagoda for the first time and in total over 500 racers showed up for the day.West coast Lites SX champ Jason Lawrence came to ride and he made the triple, yes triple on the back end of the track look easy. Lawrence dominated every race he entered and spent time with his fans signing autographs and hanging out with the local racers in between motos.Luke Palonicola (#775) still on his win streak in the 85cc (7-11) division had four moto wins and Andrew Homick is back this year with a new number (# 462) while looking strong up front in the 125 c class. in 50 cc racing action, McW conti mounted Savion terry (#120) dominated and i lost

count on how many riders he was able to lap. twenty five years ago breaking in an engine was a whole different prospect compared with today. of course everything was a two stroke then but the main difference was we had boreable cylinders. (i know, i know KX cylinders were electrofusion coated, like that was something to brag about)

A freshly bored cylinder may look smooth to the naked eye but in actuality its got more peaks and valleys than the Himalayas. During the break in process our objective was to knock off the high spots SLoWLY. if the engine was run in the mid range of its powerband the load is generally just enough to push the piston through enough of the oil film to remove the high spots without creating too much heat. Lugging the engine or revving it high would result in the piston pushing through too deeply usually resulting in scuffing or scoring.

the rest of a two stroke engine is anti friction bearings. We have needle rollers at both ends of the rod and ball bearings carrying the crank. Anti friction bearings require little or no break in time.

Modern engines all use nicasil plated cylinder bores. this surface is so hard and accurately machined as to require little or no break in. today’s two stroke race bikes really require very little in the way of a break-in. now four strokes on the other hand have a few more moving parts in the top end paramount of which is the camshaft.

in a previous article i mentioned installing an hour meter. these are very

helpful especially during the break in procedure as the checking intervals are closely spaced. Most four stroke models should have the oil changed every hour for the first five hours and the oil filter in the fifth hour. the camshaft takes about an hour to break in, during this period the engine idle should be set at 3000 rpm. the high idle is used to avoid premature wear to the peak of the cam lobes. this is where an hour/tach meter comes in real handy as trying to determine engine rPM by ear can be tough. Some hour meters measure only time but you can get ones that have a built in tachometer, they retail for about $45.

YZF, KXF, and rMZ engines all use the same oil reservoir to lubricate the engine and the transmission. During break in a lot of metal particles are generated from the gears, clutch, crank and piston and that’s why its important to change the oil so frequently initially. the engineers at Honda once again trumped everybody by building their engines with separate engine and transmission reservoirs. the advantage to this is that you can use a super slippery oil in the engine and not effect the clutch, and anything nasty that happens in the transmission/clutch is not shared with the engine, truly brilliant, as i have come to expect from Honda.

We all know how expensive maintaining a four stroke can be. Spending a little extra attention on the break-in will reward you with lower operating costs in the long run.

Smart Cross-trainingHow to train yourself is just as important a question as how to nourish yourself. ideally proper train-ing for anything is being able to make yourself ready to deal with any possible circumstance that may arise while executing a task. this could be as simple as training yourself to use a computer mouse, or eat with chopsticks. Yet it can also mean learning how to: race motocross, build a house or metal smith. these tasks may seem different but require no less effort, intelligence or dedication to execute. this is why to properly train for any one thing you must open yourself to many new experiences.

training for Motocross has many aspects that can be addressed by various exercises and activities t h a t will not only sharpen your muscles but your mind as well. Some sports with good

crossover skills are tennis, bMX, mountain biking, in-line skating, snowboard-ing, surfing, rock climbing, kayaking, hiking, swimming, martial arts and yoga.

it is important to keep in mind that only some of these activities will be right for you so try them all and do at least two of them once a

week. i think it is very important to stay away from the weight room and running track. these activities are not only mo-notonous and boring but also detrimental to the type of physique that is conducive to an effective racer. Lifting

weights reduces your reaction speed and makes your body prone to tiring out faster than someone who uses an endurance based workout program. these activities are also detrimental to your thinking as well

because they condition you to think within a given set of parameters that limits you to what you can do and how

you can do it. this may not seem important but i can assure you that the more you know the further you’ll go! try a new sport

sometime, it does not have to be for any reason, who knows what you

will learn that could some how crossover to a situation on the motocross track. if you like to run go out to a State or county Park and hit up some trails in the woods. uneven terrain, hills and lots of obstacles create the perfect circumstances to keep you concentrated and ready.

to reduce arm pump try rock climbing this sport is guaranteed to increase dexterity, reflexes, muscle endurance and strength. if you don’t have the will to execute such a dangerous task you can get the same effect from a Dyna-Flex Power ball. this product is a hand-held-gyroscope that can spin at extremely high rPMs and emit up to 32 pounds of force depending on which model you buy. be-cause of the nature of a gyroscope you get full upper body workout by just spinning it in your hand. it releases the power from within because you don’t have to use any weights or make any movements. not only is it a good work out but it’s great to relieve symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome as well. i have many friends who drive long distances and use one of these while driving to relieve cramping.

Any time you are doing something that is: physically challenging, intelligently intricate or unusually familiar try to connect that task or moment in time with the way that you experience or understand a certain moment in time on the motocross track. Doing this is not only positive reinforcement but it expands the database that your brain pulls from depending on the external stimuli. because you connected those thoughts together, in your brain certain brain cells fired together which forms a “neuronetwork”. (brain cells that fire together wire together) every time those brain cells fire together it strengthens your neuronetwork, and builds up the database of your connected experiences through-out time. if your nueronetwork for Motocross is strong enough you could potentially recognize and avoid getting yourself into certain situations without having to think about what to do. because these connections exist inherently in your brain you will already be doing what is best to deal with the situ-ation in front of you. the 15th Annual MSr / Answer north east classic Series came to Doublin gap the weekend of April 1st. With it came racers from all over the east coast and of course the cold and the rain. As 400 + racers attended the Sunday morning riders meeting with umbrellas in hand i thought, here we go again, another muddy weekend. even as i stood under my own to snap the picture of 125 b rider billy gallagher from Hazelton, PA winning a brand new Suzuki rM 125 from cumberland cycle center, i knew the day was going to be a wash. the rain and wind were picking up as the racers were lining up for practice and the track was already weary from the rains that had fallen earlier in the week. Much to my surprise and just about the same time practice was ending; the rain came to a stop. i wasn’t brave enough to put my umbrella away but with a smile on my face i headed out to the track for the first moto of the day.

First off the gate was the 125 A riders. tbt racings casey clark and Jeremy cook went into the first turn side by side with Adam blessing from toms river, nJ right on their flanks. clark and cook would battle up front and in the end it would be clark finishing first followed by cook, then Damien Plotts in third. in the second moto cook got out in front and raced on for the overall win of the day.

cook had an excellent weekend to kick off the series. He won both expert divisions on Saturday at the warm up race and on this day would battle with Phil nicoletti in both the 250 A and college boy divisions. Although ending up second in both those races, cook established himself as the man to beat coming into the 2007 Series.

the racing was just as intense in the amateur and youth divisions. 41 riders gated for 125 b racing action as they outnumbered the c class racers and the youth gates were packed. there were some classic battles going on with these future stars of our sport, you can check the results here to see how your favorite racer did.

the winter off-season stretched a few weeks longer than last year, but the wait was finally over on the first weekend of April when the opening round of the 2007 District 6 ultimate MX Series took place at Atco Motocross Park. Atco had three races scheduled this year prior to this event, but unfortunately inclement weather forced the cancellation of all three. the track had some significant changes made to it over the winter and everyone raced the new layout for the first time.

race day arrived and racers awoke to some very cold temperatures and a forecast of snow for later in the day. the temperature remained cold throughout the day, but the brief snow squalls that showed up during the second moto didn’t amount to little more than a small nuisance.

one of the best races of the day came in the first moto of the 85cc (14-15) class. At the drop of the gate Suzuki rider Frank Lettieri earned the holeshot, followed closely by Kawasaki rider tyler Hawk. the two riders were bar to bar in several turns, staying within just a few bike lengths for the entire five lap race. Lettieri earned the win with Hawk finishing second, but the two swapped finishing positions in the second moto to give Hawk the overall victory. Hawk went on to also claim the overall win in the Supermini class, while Lettieri also rode to the overall victory in both the Schoolboy and 250cc Four-Stroke classes.

Kawasaki rider James Sanders is off to a great start in the ultimate MX Series. the Fork Haven, PA native finished 1-1 in both the 25 Plus and 30 Plus Amateur classes. He was challenged in both classes by Honda rider John Ward and Kawasaki rider Samuel Aspinwall, who finished second and

third in the 25 Plus Amateur, and third and fourth in the 30 Plus Amateur classes, respectively.

All of the fans who braved the cold were treated to some great riding by new Jersey’s barry carsten, who won five of six motos, finishing second only to boost Mobile Yamaha of troy rider Jason Lawrence in the first moto of the 250 expert class. carsten rode his Suzuki to the win in the 30 Plus expert, 40 Plus expert and 250 expert classes.

Honda rider charles Sherby and Kawasaki rider robert Piazza both won three of four motos. Sherby earned the overall win in the 125cc Amateur class and a second place in the Schoolboy class, while Piazza took home the winner’s trophy in the Junior Supermini class and finished second place in the 85cc (7-11) class.

two words say it all, Loretta Lynn’s. the road to the amateur nationals at Loretta Lynn’s Dude ranch in August begins many months before. if you want to race against the 42 best riders in your class you must start in March and April and do well in the local area qualifiers. From there you go on to the regional and finally the big show.on the weekend of April 14th and 15th for the first time in its 32 year history raceway Park played

host to an area qualifier. With the weather forecast for two entirely different days, riders were going to have to contend with all that nature could throw at them.

Saturday’s program went off under sunny skies and cool temperatures but the racing was anything but cool. Several riders made the long trip to new Jersey in search of their national championship. Dade city Florida Honda rider oscar Diaz showed impressive speed by finishing fourth in the MX Lites “A” class and winning the Motocross “A” class. Also making the long trip were the Medaglia brothers tyler and Jeremy from ontario canada.

Jeremy won both the Motocross and MX Lites “b” stock classes on his Yamaha while Suzuki mounted tyler was the winner of the “A” Lites class and the non-qualifying open A class.

Sunday’s weather was the complete opposite. overnight a powerful nor’easter blew in to town bringing with it torrential rains and winds with gusts up to 50 miles an hour. the storm which encompassed the entire east coast caused widespread flooding and even temporarily closed one of the roads leaving the track. but motocross runs rain or shine and although not all classes had enough riders to run, several classes braved the conditions and ran the moto. Due to the track and weather conditions a one moto format was run and practice was cancelled. riders were given a hot lap to check the track out before their moto. the track was shortened due to safety

concerns and racing was started. one of the best races of the muddy afternoon was the MX Lites “c” Modified in which Kawasaki mounted Zak Klaptosky made a last ditch pass on leader and fellow Kawasaki rider Kyle thompson to take the victory. Local Suzuki rider Frank Lettieri was a double class winner on Sunday taking the victory in both the Super Mini 12-15 and MX Lites Schoolboy 14-16 class. good luck to all of those riders who made the cut to advance to the regional. 51 (4-6) Stock Shaft drive:1. nathan rocuskie (oth); 2. Does everyone turn their head and look your way or make obscene gestures as you ride up to them? chances are it’s not your after shave, but an annoying sound coming from your silencer. Yes Harold, it’s time to repack that monster!

the thought of taking that mysterious can apart scares some of us, not knowing what to expect, or most often the fear of not being able to re-assemble what you disassemble. it’s actually an easy job and should be done more often than most of us do it (20-30 hours is recommended). not only is that annoying sound bad for your social status and bad for keeping our riding areas open, but it’s also a big performance factor. Don’t think the louder the better. excess air space around the core of your silencer actually reduces horsepower.

the first step is to remove the silencer from your machine. Some silencers have screws while others will have rivets that need to be drilled out. if you don’t have a rivet gun, they’re available at most hardware stores for only a few dollars. Select a drill bit that’s only slightly larger than the inside of the rivet. the most common sizes are 1/8” or 3/16”. remove the silencer body and discard the old packing. You may need to use rubber mallet to help with disassembly. You’ll want to clean the core, end cap, and the inside of the silencer body. Some contact cleaner and a light cleaning with a wire brush might help here. if you’re riding a 2-stroke and it’s very oily in there, you may want to check your jetting,

oil ratio, or maybe even switch oil brands.

next trim your new packing to length if it’s the sheet type. You’ll want to roll the new material around the core rather tightly. After placing enough new packing around the core to fill the silencer body, you’ll need to hold it in place until the body is installed. i like to use some thin string (some repacking kits even give you some), while others have used electrical or masking tape. only use enough to keep the packing in place while you install the core into the silencer body.

there are several types of repacking available. FMF for example, makes several types including a “premier” kit that includes a stainless steel screen, stainless steel wool, and a high-density blanket. the main advantage to the premier kit is longer life.

of course an easier way is to buy one of the pre packed cartridges from silent sport, moose, or other manufacturers. these cartridges take the hassle out of wrapping loose material around the core. the packing is pre-packaged and wrapped, ready to install.

Quick tip: if your exhaust has a spark arrestor installed, you might want to remove it for race applications. A spark arrestor is usually a huge power thief. it’s only necessary while riding in State forest lands or other riding areas that require a spark arrestor.

Sleepy Hollows season opener came late this year being run in April rather than March like in years past. the opener was also their annual Pre easter race which came early this year. the one thing that didn’t change for opening day was the weather, it is always very cold and blustery and this year was no different than any other Sleepy Hollow opener.Some changes for 2007 include new track management in eric Swarr, Jere’s oldest son. eric is a racer and has a great passion for the sport; he is looking forward to offering us all an exciting season of racing at the Hollow. the famous bonzai got a change for the opener and was toned down for this race. Some of the bottom sections were re- routed and a new double was added coming into the big triple down in the valley. in doing some investigative reporting while at the track i learned there will continue to be track changes as the season progresses. the turnout was fair for today’s race considering it was probably colder here than at the north Pole. there was also an ultimate MX round going on at Atco and it was the day before easter. i give credit to the racers and spectators who braved the weather to compete on this day. Several racers notched their first wins including tony Fiore in the 125 c division and Jay Jajich racing in 65cc (7-9) group. Many of the youth racers are moving up and competing on the bigger bikes. in School boy racing action Scott Heilman grabbed the win and in School boy Four Stroke timmy Savidge took the checkers riding his new Kawasaki KX 250 F. the quad track had a full contingent on this day as well. tyler Young took the win racing in the 90/125 division and our cover boy tony Lucarelli won both the open A division and Quad unlimited A. Debuting at the Home Depot center, Moto X racing will showcase the premier motocross racers in the world competing in an event collaboratively developed by ricky carmichael and eSPn. Joining ricky will be fellow motocross stars chad reed, Kevin Windham and more top racers from all over the world. For X games 13, Moto X racing will join the other Moto X disciplines Freestyle, Step up, best trick and SuperMoto. Fourteen hours of live programming on eSPn, eSPn2 and Abc will be offered August 2-5 as well as X games 13 coverage on eSPn international, eXPn.com, eSPn classic, eSPn360.com, Sportscenter and eSPn2’s X center.

“the X games reflect the direction in which the leading action sports athletes are taking their sports. We are looking to spotlight as well as advance their progression,” said ron Semiao, senior vice president, eSPn original entertainment. “Working with ricky to develop a new style of motocross racing is an honor for us and will certainly appeal to our collective fans and viewers while also advancing the X games’ leadership position.”

Known as the “g.o.A.t.”(greatest of All time) by the motocross industry, ricky carmichael will be

making his X games debut. carmichael holds the records for most AMA national wins, most AMA national championships, and he is currently undefeated in outdoor national championships 10 seasons into his professional career. From 2001 through September, 2006, carmichael made 131 consecutive AMA Motocross podium appearances.

“Motocross is the original extreme sport and is a perfect fit for the X games,” carmichael said about the addition. “i am so excited to be part of the first motocross event at the X games and will offer all my support and knowledge to make this event a huge success. As far as this being my last motocross race, my hope is that this event is such a success that i will be asked back next year. My future focus will be on nAScAr and now, the X games.”

Moto X racing will deviate from traditional motocross by reducing the number of competitors per heat and the number of laps per race. the end result will be more races and more action. the event will run as follows: in round 1, the 16 invited racers will be seeded into 4 heats of 4. the winner of each heat moves directly to the Final. the 3 racers from each heat that did not qualify will race in round 2. in round 2, the 12 racers not yet qualified will race in 2 heats of 6. the winner of each heat goes to the Final to complete the bracket of 6. in the Final, the first racer to cross the finish line wins gold. the number of laps per heat will be determined once the final track design is complete. For Moto X racing, the invited racers will have their choice of motorcycle engine size -- 450cc or 250cc.

in the world features athletes from across the globe competing for medals and prize money in the following sports: bMX Freestyle, Moto X, Skateboard, Surfing and rally car racing. X games 13 will be telecast live on eSPn, eSPn2 and Abc. Last year, more than 138,000 fans attended the competition at the Home Depot center and StAPLeS center, an increase of nearly 13 percent over X games 11 in 2005 while another 35.6 million fans tuned in on eSPn, eSPn2 and Abc.

percent increase in total page views and a 61 percent increase in total visits over X games 11, making it the most-trafficked X games ever. X games 12 was also eSPn’s highest-rated X games ever among young men in the 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54 age groups. overall, X games 12 averaged a 0.9 rating on eSPn, equal to X games 11 and X games 10, with a five percent increase in average overall households (816,640). on Abc, ratings were up among young men in key 12-17 and 18-34 age groups (30 percent and four percent, respectively, vs. X games 11). Portions of the X games were also televised on eSPn international to more than 78 countries and territories in the Pacific rim, Middle east, Africa, orbit and israel.
