Hello Race Fans! Well it’s May-is it finally over? Yes you know what I’m talking about, this crazy winter. Boy, have we seen it all this year. Anyhow lets just get on with it, where’s the heat and the dust? I for one am looking forward to it. Thru all the cold and muck it’s hard to believe Memorial Day is right around the corner. We ask that you please pay your respects to the brave men and women that have served our great country, and especially to the ones that continue to do so. We’re well into the race season here in the district. There are 3 rounds each of both the motocross and harescramble series in the books already. Theres been some fantastic racing out there, I have a feeling it’s gonna be a great season. Watch MRA this year for more race coverage than ever before, We’re starting to get some very helpful people in place out there to help deliver more racing action to our pages. We have also put up a web site over the off season: log on to www.motorcycleracingaction.com to view and purchase your race photos online. And again, please remember to support the local tracks and deal-ers that advertise in MRA. They help the sport be what it is today. Lets remember to thank them by sending our business their way. Ride safe and we’ll see you at the races.Jim Bull, MRA email: [email protected]

Kerry Kaminski from Trevorton, PA is our Holeshot Hotshot for the month of April. Kerry was setting the pace at Pagoda for round 2 of the D-6 MX championship series. He pulled the holeshot in both motos of the supermini division and never looked back. Kerry went 1 - 1 on the day for first overall in his class. Kerry also competed in the school boy division and placed 2nd overall

there. Keep a close eye on this young man if you can - but don’t blink, he rides that fast. Watch out next month, maybe you’ll be the next MRA Holeshot Hotshot.

ACTION MOTORSPORTS OPEN HOUSE – 4/12/03 A.M.S. held their annual open house on Friday and Saturday April 11 & 12. There were great deals to be had on bikes and quads and parts and accessories. The AMS race team was there to show off their equipment and talk with the crowds. There were vendor dis-plays, radio stations, factory reps and free hot dogs. The big hit of the day was their Easter Egg Hunts, one for children and one for the adults. The grand prize Easter Egg held a brand new Suzuki JR 50 – won by a family from York. If you weren’t there you missed a great time, if you would like to attend their next Open House, give the staff over at A.M.S. a call, I’m sure they’ll be glad to put you on their mailing list. • 6 An Interview with Austin Greenland

Local youth wins National Dirt Track Championship. Twelve year old Austin Greenland from Spring Mills, PA, is the A.M.A. National Dirt Track Champion in the 85cc 7 – 11 age group in the TT Division for the year 2002. Austin competed in a week long series of races this past year in Springfield, Ill, home to the famous “Springfield Mile”. Riders from all over the country compete to win the coveted #1 plate in their respective divisions. Austin was able to bring home the win in the TT Series. Dirt track racing, also known as flat track or short track racing (depending on the length on the track) is a form of motorcycle racing. The riders line up, sometimes six wide

and two rows deep and compete on a dirt oval anywhere from a third mile in length right on up to a mile long at some of the National events. Local racer Austin Greenland, son of Ray and Karen Greenland has experienced many ups and downs in his short, but illustrious racing career. Austin, a student at the Center Learning Community in State College starting riding dirt bikes at the age of four. Austin said he actually started out rid-ing a go cart but didn’t care much for that. Then his father brought home a motorcycle, and to use the old cliché, “the rest is history”. Austin’s first attempt at racing was at the Motorama Speed Show in Harrisburg, PA in 1995. Austin recalls not doing so well there. After that, he then took some time off just to ride and practice. In 1997 Austin got a new ride, a Kawasaki KX60. For those of you not familiar with motorcycles, this is a bright green machine that sits about two feet off the ground with the horse power of a slightly worn out Corvette. To say the least it’s quite a package for any six year old, but Austin loved to ride and was determined to tame his bright green Kawasaki. Two short years later Austin and his family were back at the track. Austin told me that when he first got his Kawasaki he used to “wipe out” a lot, the bike was pretty big for

his six year old frame and he couldn’t hold a line on the track. But Austin was determined, he says, “I just kept going back to the races and trying, I never gave up. It was frustrating at first, I kept falling down and getting lapped by the other riders.” Austin has competed in racing events for most of his young life, in 2003 he and his family will be going into their third full season racing flat track. Austin is living proof that no matter what it is that you want to do with your life, hard work and determination will definitely pay off for you. Below is a list of Austin’s successes as an amateur motorcycle racer. 2001 - PA State Champion – 60cc and 80cc Divisions Track Champion at Trailway Speedway Most Improved Rider at Path Valley Speedway District 6 Champion – 60cc and 80cc Divisions

2002 - Southeast Nationals 2nd overall 60cc and 80cc Divisions Northeast Nationals 3rd overall 80cc Division Amateur Grand Nationals 6th overall 80cc DTX 10th overall 80cc Modified District 6 Champion – 80cc Division District 7 Champion – 80cc Division

2003 - Goals:Austin says he hopes to win the Amateur Grand Nationals this year. He wants to find new competition but mainly he wants to do a good job racing and to avoid injuries. Flat track racing is a real family event, race day actually starts a few days before getting the bikes and all of the gear ready. On race day it’s up with the roosters, depending on how far the Greenlands have to travel (the closest track to their home is an hour and a half drive). Once they arrive at the track they get everything ready to race then Austin said, “I hang with my friends until practice starts, then it’s all racing from that point on. Practice, heats, and then the main events.” Occasionally the races are held at night under the lights, then race day can last till ten or eleven at night. Then what you ask? It’s off to the next event, camp out with the other race families and get ready to do it again the following day. Austin says, “It really is a lot of fun.” Austin asked that we thank all of his sponsors that help make his racing career possible: Mom and Dad, Gram and Pap, Greenland and Son Masonry, Action Motorsports, State Amusement, Best Line Equipment, Moose Gear, Bel Ray Oil, Smith Goggles, and H & H Cycle. Flat track racing is a fantastic way to spend a weekend. Whether it’s competing or spectating it’s a great alternative to spend some time with your family. There are several tracks located in PA to catch a race at, log on the World Wide Web at www.amadistrict6.com for a complete schedule of events. For those of you that still like an old fashioned telephone, you can reach them at 717 272-6896. We’ll see you at the races.

• 8 Mullen Makes Money at Shippensburg

ST Opener By Len BreechSHIPPENSBURG, PA. APRIL 6

After his Honda suffered a mechanical problem in practice, Eric Rausch/Rausch Fuel Oils sponsored Donnie Mullen borrowed Brian Phillips' backup Rotax to win a pair of star studded finals, Sportsman and 600 A. Half the field held a National number, with a defending Sportster Champion thrown in. But a young Expert, Shawn Baer, took the lead at the start of the Sportsman final with Mullen, Jared Mees, Jess Roeder and Brian Phillips in close pursuit. Mullen took the lead off turn two on lap four, with Mees taking second in the same spot on the seventh lap. After starting on the penalty line, Rick Winsett moved up to battle Raun Wood for fifth by the eighth lap. After a few more laps, Winsett broke away and started after Roeder. Mees got up to Mullen in the closing laps, getting beside him with three laps to go and putting his Lancaster H-D/Michael's H-D Classics/John's Masonry sponsored machine into the lead starting the eleventh lap, but Mullen regained it entering the third turn. They swapped the lead at every turn to the flag, with Mullen winning by inches at the flag. Basically the same riders lined up for a twenty-five lap 600 A/Pro final. This time Mullen took the lead from Raun Wood, Brian Phillips and Mees with Mees slicing into second at the end of the opening lap. The order stayed the same, with the top four very close until about the twelfth when the race was stopped for a downed rider, right after Mees slipped into the lead. It took several restarts for the field to cover four laps, with Jake Johnson going from joy riding around at the rear, to picking off one or two on each restart to go into fifth spot. Off the final restart, Raun Wood took second, with Winsett getting by Mees for third on the fourteenth lap. Mees regrouped, getting by Winsett and Wood on the seventeenth lap. By this time, Mullen had pulled out several lengths, keeping Mees from trying a repeat of the Sportsman final. Shawn Baer put his Battlefield H-D/Vertucci Performance Equipment sponsored machine in front of Chris Klinefelter, John Lewis and Jared Mees at the start of the 250 A final. Coming off the fourth turn on lap three, Klinefelter's Deer Park Cycle/Williamson's Honda/D.M.A. sponsored Honda got a better drive and took the lead. The order stayed the same until Mees got by Lewis for third at the start of the final lap. Mees did manage to take one class, the 500 2 Valve, on his Lancaster H-D sponsored Buell. Todd Kendig topped the 30 +, with David Smith staying upright for the entire distance for the 40 + win. Mike Keane was quickest of the Vintage riders. Kenneth Venarchick took the 50 Oil Injected and 50 (4-6) classes, with Tyler Stacey holding off Joey Schmidt for the 50 (7-8) win. Hayden Avery's pressure on Tyler Kidwell paid off with a win as Kidwell fell in the fourth turn on lap six. Kidwell worked up to third off the restart. Although he didn't cause a red flag in the 85 final, Brett Pugh was a victim of it. In the early laps, he held off Austin Greenland, with Chris MacCarty, Evan Baer and Avery behind. Baer worked his way into second by the sixth lap for the 7-11 class win, with Greenland topping the 12-15 group. Michael Radkey held off Brandon Robinson and Austin Greenland for the 125 win, while Robinson used a last lap bobble by Ohio's Matthew Stevens to claim the 250 B final. Bill Boram won the 600 B final.

This is the "Manimals" 2nd year racing. Colby started out on a PW50 back in 2000. He ran his first race on his PW50 up at the Dutchman. Last year he finished 2nd overall in points at the Flying

Dutchman in the 90cc class which landed him a spot & the Motocross banquet. Saturday night at ATCO was his first actual overall win, and his first 5 foot trophy. It was wonderful to see Mr. Wild acknowledge Colby for that win. He knows what it meant to us as a family, and also to Colby. Colby has worked extremely hard, and Saturday night was no exception to that rule. Friday night they traveled to ATCO to get some practice in. By 7:30 the quad was on the back of the truck on its way home with a blown motor.Colby and his dad worked on the quad till almost 3:30 am so that he could come to ATCO and race Saturday night. Their hard work really paid off. We are all very proud of him. It was a long time coming and well deserved for such a fine young man. We'd like to thank all of our friends at the track who have been so supportive through all the good times and hard times. We'd like to say thank-you to everyone, and good luck and have a great season.

Press Release – April 9, 2003 Woodbine Motocross Track Ready for Weekend WOODBINE - More than 200 dirtbike riders are expected to converge in a former sand quarry this weekend to break in the new Mount Pleasant Motocross track. The park's metal bleachers are still in pieces, the electricity hasn't been installed yet and one of the concession stands won't arrive until next week. But the dirt track is ready to go, and that's the only thing that really matters, said Amy Bianchino, one of the track's partners. "It's exciting, but it's a lot of work," she said. Mount Pleasant joins Atco Motocross Park in Berlin and Raceway Park in Old Bridge Township as the only motocross tracks in New Jersey sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Association. Riders here will compete in Division 6, which includes Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The track will host 46 "motos" or races in 23 different classes, Bianchino said. The privately owned park will open its track to local riders for a daily fee beginning April 18. "People have wanted this for years," said Ray Leps, who owns a dirtbike and motorcycle dealership in nearby Tuckahoe. "People see it on TV and so forth. Everybody is into this now." When they announced their plans to build the park, co-owners Eric Stratten and Lou Bianchino, of Dennis Township, said they wanted to take the riding pressure off Cape May County, where there are frequent disputes between dirtbike riders and private property owners. State Police regularly respond to complaints about all-terrain vehicles in neighboring Upper and Dennis townships. But it remains to be seen whether local riders will pay to ride legally or continue to flaunt the law for free. "Police are cracking down on it," Amy Bianchino said. "Who wants to run? You can't enjoy yourself if you're scared you'll get in trouble all the time." Leps said the park is bound to be popular with families. "For the most part, the people riding are dads with their kids," Leps said. "They want to spend family time together. It's good for the kids. You have to give them a place to burn that energy off." The park owners are erecting fencing around the nearly mile-long track to protect spectators. The park will host 30 professional races this year. The 54-acre park will have public space for riders of all ages and experience levels, Bianchino said. "You can almost see the entire track except for the back end because of the trees," she said.

7Atv harescramble report from flying dutchmen mc By Jason and Jacob Hughes

The 2003 District 6 and Pa. state hare-scramble series is under way. This year started unusually early with the first round February 2nd at the Flying Dutchmen in Pine Grove, Pa. The first round also counted towards the Pa state championship points and attendance was surprisingly high even with tem-peratures in the 20's. With snow still on the ground and below freez-ing temperatures the Dutchmen proved to be quite a challenge for a lot of racers. The track that had become known for its flat out pace and sweeping turns had become an ice racing course with mud covering the icy turns. Racers struggled to keep pace as the terrain was unpredictable in places. Half way through a sweeping turn in 4th gear throttle wide open, then the mud turned to ice, lets just say it was interesting to watch. There was standing water on much of the track; other parts were a soupy mix of grit and mud. The premier class in years past has been the 2 stroke A class. This year it appears a few racers have switched to four strokes which has made the 4 stroke A class interesting to watch. The 2 stroke class has gotten smaller but there are a few die-hard 2 strokers left that, I'm sure will be around for a while. Chris Borich GNCC #4 was on hand to brave the cold and wet conditions with his Leager/LRD 250R. Chris got his machine fired first and took the holeshot followed by Mike Lucas aboard his Banshee. Rob Hertz was riding a Herrmann Racing/Powerline 250R and was in 3rd position followed by Daniel Ketterer of Quakertown Pa. on his H&K racing/Powerline machine. The wet conditions were terrible for racing and it was hard to battle or make a pass. Most passes were made in the pits as racers stopped nearly every lap for goggles and gloves. Chris Borich stayed dry enough to pull a substantial lead on the field and ended up with the win for the day as well as the overall win. Second place went to Banshee pilot Mike Lucas, followed by Ketterer in third. The fourstroke A class was stacked with over 15 entries, the most this class has seen since it was started in 1999. The Hartman brothers from New Jersey, both former B class champs made their presence known both proving they could ride in the slop. Jason Hartman pulled off the win and placed very well overall. A lot of riders suffered DNF's due to the cold and wet conditions, chances are if you stayed on

the track you were gonna do well. The March 2nd race at Rausch Creek was canceled due to severe weather and has been rescheduled for August 17th. After a water logged trip to Florida for the season opener of the GNCC series I returned home to watch the race at the Dutchmen on March 9th. After racing the February race myself I knew what this brutal Pa. winter had done to our favorite home track and made a wise decision to sit this one out. This entire season so far had been a wet muddy mess, not just for the D6 tracks but the GNCC's also. The day prior to this event was the GNCC rd. #2 in Georgia and it was two rounds of mud in a row for that series. GNCC stock class championship contender Jonathon Bowers of Bowers Cycle Supply made the over night run from Georgia to Pa. in time for the start of the race. With a lot of the top racers still at the GNCC event this left the door open for several other racers to earn valuable points. I've seen a few messy races in my day and this was by far the worst I hadever seen. Our 2 stroke A class was down to one rider, Mike Lucas from Lykens Pa. also made the trip from Georgia to gain some series points, he elected to be started in the 4 stroke A line rather than ride out the laps by himself. The rules state that a rider must finish 1 lap to earn the points for signing up. Lucas however decided to run the entire race against the 4 strokes besting all but one, he ended up with 2nd overall. Jason Hartman took the holshot and led for 1 mile until the hidden ice caused him to spin out and loose his lead. Jon Bowers took over the lead from there and rode smooth all race, he was getting some heat from Hartman in the middle of the race but was able to pull off the win. Bowers took the overall win fol-lowed by 2 stroke A class winner Mike Lucas, and 2 stroke B class racer Nate Gogno. Back to the Dutchmen again on March 16th, clear skies and a more tolerable temperature was a nice change but the track was still a little sloppy. This week all the regulars were there ready to get dirty on what I consider to be the super speedway of the district 6 harescrambles. In past years the powerful Honda 250R has been the quad to beat in most forms of ATV rac-ing. In the last few years we have seen the devel-opment and release of several new brands which have showed the potential to dethrone the R. This round proved that these new quads are no joke. The start of the 2 stroke class was similar to the past few rounds with Sunbury Pa.'s Chris Borich taking the lead. Rob Hertz and Todd Rothermel were in hot pursuit but before a lap was complete Rothermel's engine took on some water and left him spectating, but only for a few min-utes. Meanwhile Borich pulled a bit of a lead and tried to stay dry. The 4 stroke A class left the line moments later with Jon Bowers taking the lead on his modified Honda 400EX. Bowers was chased by a fleet of current model year modified racers including Suzuki Z400's, Cannondales and the Polaris Predator. Rick Cecco from Shamokin Pa. was in a good position to challenge Bowers for the lead, but was sidelined on the first lap with electri-cal problems. As the laps progressed the Hartman brothers stayed within striking distance of Bowers waiting for an opportunity to make their move. Meanwhile out front in the 2 stroke class Chris Borich was heading for another overall win when the mechan-

ical gremlins got a hold of his machine. Borich made a trip to the pits to sort things out and was followed shortly by Rob Hertz who was in second overall at the time. Meanwhile Todd Rothermel was able to get his Leager 250R refired and back on the track, but not before he was overtaken by the front runners in the 4 stroke class. With Borich and Hertz out of the running, bragging right for the overall win were up for grabs. Bowers was still in the lead but Jason Hartman stepped up the pace and made a charge. With the laps winding down a noise could start to be heard from the tranny in the Hartman quad. With only 2 laps to go the tranny had let loose and ruined Hartmans chance for the win. Bowers sped away and younger Jeff Hartman inherited the second place spot. At the finish line it was Bowers taking the win in the 4 stroke class as well as the overall win. With Jeff Hartman in second place and myself in third spot. Todd Rothermel who was out on the first lap was able to repair his 250R and get back into the race; he came through the pack to take his first ever A class win in District 6, congratula-tions Todd. In the B class Nate Gogno continued his streak of convincing wins aboard his Leager 250R, finishing well into the top ten after starting nearly 5 minutes behind the A class racers. Traci Lenig-Cecco 2001 GNCC womens class champi-on, used her Alba backed Z400 to tame the muddy conditions, and win the 4 stroke B class by over 2 minutes, way to go Traci. Hopefully spring is really on the way, soon we'll all be complaining about the dusty track con-ditions and how hot its been. Our next Harescramble coverage will be from rounds 3, 4, and 5 of the Pa. State Series. Including Hurricane Hills, Foot of the Mountain and the new facility in Shippensburg sponsored by Compass Race Team. I'll also be out at the GNCC here in Pa. at Rausch Creek on May 10th. Stop by and say hello I really enjoy meeting new racers and being able to give our sport the publicity it deserves. Until next time, ride responsibly, respect your neighbors, but when you get to the track let it rip!!!!Jason L. Hughes #750

STEELE CREEK Morganton, NC – GNCC Round 3 By Trish Krachun / Pro Parts Racing

Round 3 of the GNCC Series landed upon the scenic Steele Creek campground facil-ity in Morganton, NC. Racer Productions, the promotors, put together an extremely rough 10-mile track. One of the highlights for the fans, was the bridge that the racers navigated their way under in the stream & mud bogs. Fans were crowded on top of that bridge as the racers went under them. Some of those mud-bogs along the track got so bad that many racers, even Bill Ballance & William Yokely had to be pulled out with a tow rope by the spectators! Ballance & Yokely were grateful for the spectators help, without them, they probably wouldn't have won their respective classes.

As the Pro & Pro Production top 20 overall in points standings started on the front row in the grassy field, it was Klotz/LRD backed Bill Ballance who grabbed the much sought after hole-shot. He was followed closely by Team Safari/LRD/Pro Parts Racing's Matt Smiley. The remainder of the Pro & Pro Production classes took off 1 minute later. This gives the top guns in each class an equal chance of capturing the overall win. The Pro Production class has really stepped up this year as many more Pro racers jumped ship to join the Pro Production class. Racers such as Yokely (#3), Brad Page (#5), & Johnny Gallagher (#14) are now mounted on Suzuki LTZ400's with stock frames as opposed to the after-market framed 2-strokes.

The Pro Production class is in it's sophmore year of the GNCC Series. The ATV manufacturers are really relishing this new class. In the past years, the Pro, among other, classes have turned into to an almost totally after-market ATV class which you can not buy in your local dealer showroom. For the Pro Production class, there are rules that each racer has to follow. Among them, they have to run 4-stroke ATV being made today and run the stock chassis & motor mounts, but they are allowed to modify other area's of the ATV. The promoters & racers feel this class will help put the spotlight on the ATV's currently being produced and get the factory's involved. So far, the factory's are starting to up their racing support by offering contingencies & helping dealerships supply top racer's with new ATV's to race. Let's give a BIG welcome back to the manufactures & Racer Productions for starting this class!

As the racers battled for the lead, Ballance was soon being challenged by 20-year old, East Coast/LRD backed Chris Borich (#4). Smiley soon dropped out of the race with a mechanical failure. This particularly hurts Smiley since this is his 3rd DNF this season. Last season, Smiley was nick-named Mr. Consistency for his ability to finish on the podium at almost all the GNCC races, this season he sure needs some of that consistency back! Borich, however, proved to be a force to be reckoned with on this sunny day. Ballance & Borich quickly pulled their lead away from 3rd, 4th & 5th overall, K&K's Greg Trew, Four-Stroke Tech's Chad Duvall & Yoshimura/IMS/ITP/Nac's/Roll backed William Yokely who compete in the Pro Production class by mid-race.

Borich gained the lead as he passed Ballance who was stuck in a mud-hole. It took 5-6 spec-tators with a tow strap to pull him out! Ballance made a hard charge to catch Borich. Borich was leading the last lap until he crashed pretty hard. "I caught a kicker and it threw me over the bars. The hardest part today was picking the right lines." Said Borich. At this point, Yokely was now leading the Production class in a raging battle with Duvall. Yokely had charged so hard, he was within sight of Ballance & Borich. Once he saw him, he decided to plow hard through the middle of a deep mud hole & got stuck. The spectators, again, saved the day & pulled him out.

At the checkers, it was Bill Ballance with the overall win, with Borich finishing 2nd 30 seconds back. "Chris ran a real good pace today" said Ballance. Yokely & Duvall charged hard to finish in 3rd & 4th overall while placing 1st & 2nd in their Pro Production class. Yokely commented after the race "my bike was working awesome, but I was getting some arm pump out there". Others racers agreed & many had lots of blisters on their hands to prove what a rough track it was.

0 Wallace Wallops ‘em2003 THOR/Parts Unlimited Northeast Classic Motocross SeriesRound 1: Doublin Gap Motocross ParkBy Jim P. SandersonNewburg, PA, March 23, 2003

The 2003 Thor/Parts Unlimited Northeast Classic Motocross Series, celebrating its

11th year, is the premier motocross series of the northeast. Round one is one the

earliest events on the AMA District Six calendar. Just two weeks prior, the Northeast

still had quite a bit of snow cover and Mother Earth had yet to thaw. Over 700 of the

best motocross riders in the northeast and beyond, made the trek to Newburg,

Pennsylvania. With over $229,000 dollars in Factory Contingency for 2003, one can be

sure that the competition will be fierce.

The Yentzer

Family, pro-

moters of the

great job pre-

paring the

racecourse

and the entire facility for that matter, for an outstanding day of great racing.

RRP's, Ty Wallace, AMA National # 85, walloped the competition in the 125 and 250

Open A classes, winning the overall, a nice chunk of change and heads to round two

with the series points lead in

both classes. Wallace carded

2-1's in both the 125 and 250

Open A classes, respectively,

and also finished third overall

in the Over 25 A class with a

5-2 score.

Bromley Suzuki's Barry

Carsten, who drove all night

from St. Louis where he fin-

ished a very respectable 15th

in the tiddler class at round 11

of the AMA Supercross Series,

led the pack of 37 riders out

of the first turn in the first 250

Open A class moto. In tow

were Shenandoah Honda's

Tom Welch, Barry Taggert Jr.

and Yamaha of Camp Hill/

RRP's Jeremy Cook.

After a half a lap, the top five

running order changed con-

siderably. Welch was out front

followed by Crossroad

Powersports/RRP's Damien

Plotts, Wallace, Carsten and

Jeremy Tiffany.

Plotts was right on the rear

wheel of Welch by the start of

lap two and made the pass for

the lead by doing the triple

just before the expert only

section while Welch only dou-

bled the obstacle. Welch was

relegated to second. Wallace

and Carsten were still third

and fourth and Kevin Brodsky

Jr. moved up to fifth. Plotts and Welch quickly separated themselves, as there was a

huge gap back to Wallace in third.

Plotts had a four second lead by the last lap. Welch made a mistake only a short

distance from the finish line, which allowed Wallace and Carsten to get by. Plotts got

the first moto win with

Wallace, Carsten, Welch

and Cook trailing.

Cook led the start of the

final 250 Open A class

moto. In tow were Nick

Mowry, Wallace, Carsten

and Chris Hunter. The top

five running order changed

considerably after the lead-

ers got through the tight

and twisty infield section.

Cook remained at the point

with Wallace, Welch,

times with Carsten finally making a pass stick on lap three to take third, dropping

Welch to fourth.

Wallace closed the gap on Cook and made the pass for the lead along the back tree-line section. Cook was relegated to second. With two laps remaining, Carsten passed Cook to take second, dropping Cook to third and soon after was passed by Plotts, dropping Cook to fourth.

Wallace took the checkered flag with a three second advantage. Rounding out the top five were Carsten, Plotts, Welch and Cook.

Wallace got the top tier of the 250 A podium via his 2-1 rides. Plotts 1-3 score was good for runner-up honors and Carsten rounded out the podium with his 3-2 tally.

Cook led the start of the first 125 A class moto. In tow were Mike Leavitt, Carsten, Rodney Horrocks and Wallace. Leavitt had the point after about a half lap, displacing Cook to second. Wallace and Plotts were now third and fourth with Horrocks dropping to fifth.

Wallace was out front by the start of lap two with Cook, Leavitt, Plotts and Aaron Day trailing. A few turns later, Plotts passed Leavitt to take third drop-ping Leavitt to fourth. On the next lap, Leavitt attempted the triple but came up short, giving Day fourth place. Leavitt dropped to fifth.

Plotts passed Cook for second with a lap and a half to go. Cook was relegated to third. Day was a solid fourth and Hunter was now up to fifth. Plotts closed

in on Wallace and made the pass for the lead. Plotts quickly pulled away and finished the moto with a five second advantage. Rounding out the top five were Wallace, Day, Hunter and Carsten.

Carsten led the start of the final 125 A class moto but was quickly passed by Wallace. Carsten dropped to second. Rounding out the top five were Hunter, Welch and Dave Ginolfi. The top four were unchanged by lap two with Plotts moving up to fifth.

Wallace crossed the finish line for the second moto win with about a four second advantage. Rounding out the top five were Carsten, Hunter, Welch and Plotts.

Wallace earned the overall with his 2-1 rides. Plotts 1-5 tally was good enough for runner-up honors. Carsten's 5-2 rides were good for third overall.

Doublin Gap was the site for Round # 1 of the 11th Annual Thor Parts Unlimited North East Classic on March 23, 2003. Over 700 riders came out on this beautiful spring day to compete in the kick off race of this years prestige’s event. Riders from up and down the north east coast follow this event to 5 different tracks each year to compete for

close to a quarter million dollars in factory contingency money. In addition to that scores of sponsors donate parts and accessories to be given away at each round, and one lucky racer goes home with a brand new mx bike from each event donated by a local dealer. The North East Classic was an idea spawned by track owner Tom Hurd back in the

early 90’s. The primary goal was to get riders from the north east to travel to different facilities to see who really is the fastest guy or girl in their respective classes from the region. Since then the series has exploded and sponsors from all over the world offer their wares to the fastest riders in the series. As of print date there are still three rounds left for you to participate in , there is plenty of contingencies and prizes available so

load up your bike and head on out to the North East Classic.

In talking with Tom Hurd he asked that we thank all of the sponsors and track owners that help make these events possible, and also the riders that travel to and par-

ticipate each year in the series. I would also like to mention the participating dealers that donate motorcycles to be given away at these events, your support of our sport is highly commendable.

9MRA PRoDUcT REVIEW Last fall, MRA was contacted by Shawn Gold, sales manager for Performance Distributing Co. based out of York, PA. Shawn represents products like No – Toil Biodegradable Air Filter Oil and Serfas Spider Grips. Shawn offered some product samples to us for product testing. In a few days “the present man” as my kids refer to the UPS guy showed up at the door with a new No – Toil Air Filter Kit and a set of bright green Spider Grips for my sons 01 KX 85. Well it wasn’t long before we were in the garage replacing the necessary parts to go out and play in the mud and begin our product testing. This was mid November last year, then it happened, yes the w word, winter showed up and it never ended. Well we got tired of this about early February and we decided we we’re going to start product testing, winter or no winter. Fast forward to the present, our review is complete and winter is still trying to hang around. We think that stinks, but as far as the products go that the present man brought us last November. Two thumbs up to Shawn Gold and the products he offers. First of all, I’ve been riding motorcycles for over 30 years now and I have never used a pair of grips as nice as the Spiders. They are super comfortable for those long trail rides and they offer excellent grip. As you all know, there’s been plenty of slippery conditions to test our grips in this spring. As far as longevity goes we can’t help you there, we wanted to get our report out as soon as possible. From the appearance of things I don’t see why they wouldn’t hold up as well as any other grip on the market. One last thing, the colors rock. Now for the No-Toil products. Kids, don’t act like your dads and believe that you don’t need to read the directions on anything before you get started. I’ve been maintaining filters for years, who needs directions. Just a few minutes later before the installation was complete I’m walking around the house with the tackiest oil on my hands in the world and I can’t touch anything because I lost my super glue remover. Then my wife says to me – hey Einstein how about trying the filter cleaner(she bails me out all the time). Please read the directions completely before using this stuff. (hint:use rubber gloves)I believe the No – Toil products work great, we’ve had plenty of messy weather to test filters and cleaners in this spring. When removing the air filter from the KX it looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in several rides, to me this indicated that the oil was doing its job and trapping the dirt. Then I think to my self, how’s the cleaner going to work? Again follow the diluting directions on the bottle – one bottle of this stuff should last you quite a while. In minutes the filter looked like new again, apply the oil and back into the bike, No – Toil also offers a rim grease that works real good. I recommend trying all of the great products mentioned above. Give your local dealer a call and tell him you saw it in MRA. You can also contact Shawn Gold with Performance Distributing at (717) 586-3178 and he can line you up with a stocking dealer.

Dutchmen PA Series took place on April 6th. In youth action Tim Rizzon and Jerod Stoner made it look easy win-ning the 12-15 85cc and the 100 Super mini classes. Billy King had a great ride in the A class. Danny Palmer riding his first A200 race man-aged to hang on to a 5th despite an injured hand. Chris Henry took another win in the 125B but not with out pressure from Mikey Soudas finishing second and 5 minutes in front of third. In the senior class things looked good for Ed Hoover but a hard landing off a jump ended his day, making it easy for Brian Desimone to take the win.

RORR on March 30th was another story. Mother nature unloaded on this early spring day with her winter fury. 80+ youth and 135+ adult riders braved the storm. Club members were just awesome in pulling off this event. In Pee Wee action Kelsy Hartem rode hard to capture the Overall win along with first place in the 7-9 65cc class. Troy Desimone and Daniel Bromley took second and third. In the youth classes Jerod Stoner was on fire taking the overall and the win in the Super Mini Class. Mikey Soudas grabbed the super mini holeshot and rode well for 2nd place and 2nd overall. Mike Potts encountered a flat 2/3 of the way into the

race but managed to hang on for 1st in the 12-15 85cc class and 3rd over-all. In the main event ECEA's long time rider Fred Hoess showed everyone he still has it with an overall win by 3 minutes over Bill Atkinson. Atkinson rides this race

almost every year and is alway near the top. This year he was 2nd. Great ride guys. Jim Senecal was 3rd overall. Other top class finishers includ-ed Bryan Desimone, Burt Guers, Brian Burt, Scott Chapkovich, Phill Kropp, Danny Palmer, Mike Sigety, Wayne Grenewicz.

On April 12th a few of our young riders ventured to South Carolina to com-pete in the 4th round of the GNCC series. It was a summer like day with temperatures near 80 after a week full of rain. Track conditions were near perfect. Ryan McGaha proved once again he can hang with the best. Ryan took the Overall and the Mini Senior win. This was his sec-ond number 1 podium spot in 2 out of 2 youth events. Jerod Stoner has made the podium a few times but this time it was a 1st place spot in the Mini Intermediate class. Other local riders having fine rides included Tiffany Tomlin, Mikey Soudas, Eric Rogers, Jimmy Shea, Robert Camp, Troy Desimone. Adult riders having good riders were Ryan Rogers 250A, Bryan Desimone Senior A, Tom Ebersole to name a few. Chris Borich in quad action had a great ride also making the podium.

May is looking good for alot of race action. We have a couple of PA series races, ECEA events and a GNCC in our backyard at Rausch Creek on May 11th.

harrison, Dockray handle hurricane hills Season openerHurricane Hills Sports CenterBy Jim P. SandersonclifforD, Pa, aPril 6, 2003

Over 175 riders came out to Clifford, Pennsylvania, to the beautiful Hurricane Hills Sports Center for the season opener on a cold and wind swept spring day. Mother Nature dropped some extensive precipitation on the area several days prior to the event and overnight temperatures went down in to the 20's, which delayed prac-tice sessions due to the fact that the ground was still frozen. Once promoter, Tom Hurd and his crew went to work ripping the entire racecourse, track conditions

improved greatly and continued to do so as the day progressed. When the sec-ond half of the race program started, the track was in excellent shape.

Kawasaki pilot, Colton Harrison and Yamaha pilot, Jon Dockray won the 85cc 12-13 and 125 Amateur classes, respectively, at the season opening motocross race at the Hurricane Hills Sports Center in Clifford, PA.

Joey Keefe and Jamie Kriger rounded out the 85cc 12-13-class podium. Keefe went 2-2 for runner-up honors while Kriger, who was racing for the first time, carded a 5-3 for the day.

W a l t Zabrowski and Brian C o o k r o u n d e d out the 125 A m a t e u r class podi-u m . Zabrowski didn't get quite the start he

would have liked in the first moto but eventually worked his way to fourth. In the second moto, Zabrowski's brother Dan nailed the holeshot and the two brothers battled for about a half a lap running one and two. Walt passed his brother Dan on the finish line triple to take the lead and pulled away to a whopping 14-second lead by the end of the moto.

Cook battled with Dockray for the first three laps of the first 125 Amateur class moto, finally getting around Dockray for the lead and stayed in the point position, taking the first moto win. Cook, almost exactly opposite of Zabrowski, got a not-so-great start in the second 125 Amateur class moto

and eventually worked his way to fifth. Cook's 1-5 was good for the final tier of the 125 Amateur class podium.

Harrison got his number one plated KX off the gate and rounded the first turn with the lead. Trailing were Marshall Hurd, Keefe, Christopher Chesniak, and Kriger. Just after the start of the second lap, Hurd made the pass on Harrison for the lead in the corner preceding the huge Hurricane Hills step-up relegat-ing Harrison to second. Third through fifth were unchanged.

The top five quickly spread out and remained the same until the last lap when Hurd crashed on the huge double in the middle of the racecourse giving Harrison the lead and the first moto win. Keefe inherited second while Hurd managed to remount third. Chesniak and Kriger rounded out the top five.

Harrison had another great start in the final 85cc 12-13-class moto. In tow off the start were Keefe, Chesniak, Kriger and Matt Vacendak. Hurd bruised some ribs in his first moto endo and decided to sit out the second moto.

After two and a half laps the top two were unchanged. Krieger passed Chesniak to take third place, relegating Chesniak to fourth. Vacendak held fifth. The leaders spread out once again and remained the same to the checkered flag. The second moto finished; Harrison, Keefe, Kriger, Chesniak and Vacendak.

Dockray got his Yamaha out front and led the start of the first 125 Amateur class moto. Trailing were Cook, Ryan Saum, Dan Zabrowski and George Narcum. By the third turn, Cook had the lead with Dockray, Dan Zabrowski, Narcum and Carm Parri in tow. One long straight a way and a turn later, Dockray was back out front with Cook being relegated to second.

Cook chased down Dockray for the next couple of laps and finally made the pass for the lead on lap three. Dockray dropped to second. Narcum was holding his own in third while Walt Zabrowski had moved up to fourth and David Rockafeller fifth.

Cook kept the point position for the rest of the moto, taking the checkers with a small advantage over Dockray. Rounding out the top five were Narcum, Zabrowski and Jim Ayres.

Dan Zabrowski, who changed from a Honda CR125 to a 250 YZF Yamaha thumper for the 2003 season, led the pack through the first turn in the final 125 Amateur class moto just ahead of Dockray, Ayres, and Walt Zabrowski. One quarter of a lap later the top five were Dan Zabrowski, Walt Zabrowski, Dockray, Cook and Rockafeller.

Walt passed his brother Dan for the lead on the finish line triple at the start of lap two to take the lead. Dan Zabrowski was relegated to second. A half a lap later, Dan Zabrowski cross-rutted in the big sweeper turn by the start area, which let Dockray by for the runner-up position. Dan Zabrowski dropped to third. Ayres and Cook were still fourth and fifth, respectively.

Walt Zabrowski was just flying out front and had an 11-second lead by lap three. The top five were pretty well spread out by this point of the final 125 Amateur class moto and remained unchanged to the checkered flag. Walt Zabrowski finished the moto with a huge 14-second lead. Rounding out the top five were Docray, Dan Zabrowski, Ayres and Cook.

MRA had an opportunity recently to speak with AMA District 6 champ Casey Clark. Casey started his racing career here in district 6 when he was just 6 years old racing a Yamaha 4 Zinger quad. He has since moved on to racing motorcycles and has accomplished many district titles over the years. Casey has been racing in the Expert division for the last three seasons and has done quite well. In both 2000 and 2001 he won both the 125A and 250A class championships, in 2002 he was 1st in the 125A Expert division and 2nd in the 250A division. Casey will be chasing a new dream this year, he will be competing on his Keeney Motosports sponsored Yamahas in the 2003 AMA/Chevy Trucks U.S. MX Series. In talking with Casey he said he plans to hit all of the Outdoor Nationals this year and one of his goals is to earn a top 100 number. MRA would like to thank Casey for the time he gave us and we wish you a great season of racing.

CONGRATULATIONS – CODY GRAYBILL # 66Way to go Cody on your first of many 125cc holeshots !! Cody just bumped up to the 125c class this year coming off of an 85. He pulled the holeshot in the 1st moto at Doublin in the non Loretta Lynn race on April 6th, Cody never looked back and took the checkers. In the second moto he went down on the 1st lap but was running high on the adrenaline from his 1st moto win. Cody remounted and charged hard from dead last to work his way up to 5th place, his efforts landed him a third overall for the day. MRA says watch out for this kid – he’s gonna go places.

BIG BUCK GNCCUnion, SC – April 12, 2003 By Trish Krachun / Pro Parts Racing

Round 4 of the GNCC Series landed upon Union, SC. Like the other 3 GNCC's this year, the week prior to the race drenched the land & left a tough race course for the racers to navigate their way through. Bill Balance managed to get the holeshot once again with Chris Borich & William Yokely leading the rest of the first line of Pro & Pro Production racers to the all important trail into the woods. Borich battled with Balance and eventually passed him on the first lap. Borich, mounted on his East Coast ATV/Laeger/LRD/Custom Axis 250R at one point had pulled a 20 second lead on the sea-soned vet GNCC#1, Balance. Balance, however wouldn't have any of that & put the hammer down to catch & battle with Borich for the remaining 3/4 of the race.

The battle for 3rd - 5th overall was just as exciting. Pro Production Racers Greg Trew, Chad Duvall & Brad Page who was now racing a brand new Kawasaki KFX400. Four-Stroke Tech's, Duvall turned the pace up & opened up a big gap by the end of the race. Back in the Pro class, Borich led almost the entire race until the last lap when he got stuck in a mud hole. Balance took advantage of Borich's misfortune & passed him. Borich broke loose of the mud & charged hard to catch Balance. It was then, that Borich took a real hard crash. "I got stuck in the mud & Bill passed me, then we went through this whoop section & I hit a tree & started barrel rolling. The bike landed on top of me & a spectator had to help me get out. This crash secured Ballance's win. Borich finished over a minute behind. Balance stated "It was a real good race, we pushed the pace hard today to make sure no one else challenged us, the competition just keeps stepping up". Duvall nearly caught up & passed Borich while Borich was getting back on his feet. Duvall finished only 9 seconds behind Borich to capture 3rd overall & 1st in his Pro Production class. "I had a super good day" recalled Duvall on the podium. Trew & Page finished 2nd & 3rd in the Pro Production class.

LRD/Pro Parts Racing/Custom Axis backed Matt Smiley finished 3rd in the Pro class & 5th Overall. Smiley had to overcome starting in the 2nd row of Pro's this race as this race was the first of the season to start the "current" top 20 in Pro/Pro Production points to start on the first line. Matt (GNCC #2), who was by far the most consistent racer of 2002, had yet to finish a race this year until today. With today's finish, Matt will be back on the first line at the next race in Loretta Lynn's. "It could be a big advan-tage to start on the 2nd row, but today it wasn't. Today's track was too fast & if you don't start up front, it's hard to pace yourself".

In the 250A class, Jimmy Wahl had a great battle with the Hertz Racing/Pro Parts Racing backed Sean Neidlinger. Wahl & Neidlinger banged bars the entire race until Neidlinger had some mechanical failures on the last lap. Wahl captured the win while Neidlinger was able to still finish 2nd. Third went to Blaine Shick on his Laeger 250R.

In the Open A class, Brian Schmid captured the win. Schmid had the lead pretty much the entire race. The real battle was taking place from 2nd - 7th place. These racers were playing musical chairs all race. Joshua Ribley & Wayne Shay finished 2nd & 3rd only 8 seconds apart.

In the morning race, there was a raging battle for the overall spot between 2 women competitors. Stephanie Parton & Traci Cecco. Cecco had the early lead with Parton on her bumper. While Parton pitted for goggles, Cecco pulled a slight lead. Parton put the hammer down, caught Cecco & passed her to pull off her first Overall win & 2nd ever for a woman's class competitor. The first time a woman won the morning class overall was last year at this very track with Cecco taking the win in 2002. "We had a good race today. It was pretty rough out there. I had to really hammer down and catch Traci after two 4-stroke stock guys crashed in front of me." The 4-stroke stock class started in the first line (every race, they alternate between the woman & 4-stroke stock). Rich Travalena captured the win in the 4-stroke stock class & 3rd overall for the morning. Wesley Fruits placed 2nd & Adam Howell on his Kawasaki V-Force finished 3rd. When asked how he felt finishing behind two women, Travelena stated "At least they're a lot better to look at than a guy!"

IGNORE THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK HOW TO MAINTAIN AN AIR FILTER

Reactive Suspension By Andy Fleck & Al Carrwww.reactive-suspension.com

This is one article I never thought I would have to write but recent events have made me realize that more racers need to know "How to maintain an Airfilter"

In the past few weeks I've had motorcycles in my shop owned by people who have been racing for many years and I was shocked to see the condition of their air filters. Some were completely clogged with dirt but more shocking were the ones that had either the wrong filter oil or no oil at all. I guess the fact that I learned the importance of filter mainte-nance right from the get go I just assumed that everyone else especially racers also knew this stuff, boy was I WRONG!

I've been involved with motorcycles now for over 30 years and I remember that one of the first things I learned regard-ing maintenance was the correct way to care for the airfilter. With my first race bike a ''72 Husqvarna 125, maintenance simply meant replacing the filter periodically as it was a paper element, but things changed quickly with the advent of Filtron Foam Filters. In the pursuit of greater performance we now had a serviceable unit that flowed a greater volume of air but which had had to be maintained frequently. Modern air-filters are constructed from open cell foam which is the opposite of seat foam which is closed cell. Open celled foam is a lattice much like a spiders web but in 3 dimensions and just like a web is designed to catch flies your air filter is designed to catch dirt. Your air filter is the only line of defense your engine has against damage from the elements. Road Racers don't need airfilters since they run in a clean air environment and can take advantage of the maximum allow-able air flow. We dirt bikers on the other hand need to clean up the air we race in before we let it get into the motor.

Two Stroke engines use a lot of anti-friction bearings. Needle rollers on both ends of the connecting rod and ball bearings supporting the crankshaft. Anti-friction bearings such as these are extremely sensitive to dirt. Extreme care is advised in their handling at the time of installation going even so far as to avoid touching the bearing surfaces with bare hands as the oils on your hands can transfer minute abrasive particles. The only lubrication these bearings get is the pre-mix oil we mix into the fuel. But even this minute amount is sufficient for the bearings to operate efficiently and with a long service life.

A 125 bottom end should last about one season of racing a 250 can go as long as three seasons, but all this presupposes that we don't get any dirt into the engine, dirt particles in a two stroke engine will cause premature wear in all the bearings. In two and four stroke engines it will wear the Nicasil coating off the cylinder bore. Nicasil is tough stuff and will last a long long time but it is only a couple of thousandths of an inch thick. Dirt in the motor will act like sandpaper between the piston and cylinder and will quickly wear through the Nicasil exposing the aluminum beneath. (Cylinder re-plating will cost you between $150. - $200.) An aluminum piston rubbing on an aluminum bore is a bad combination, one that we must avoid. So how do we do that?

Lets begin with a dirty filter since that's what we all probably have. The first thing we need to do is to get the old air filter oil out of the filter. This is done with a mild solvent that will break down the oils bond with the filter and allow it to be washed away. The recommended cleaning agent is one that is specifically designed for the job. Twin Air sell's just such a product as does Silkolene. Kerosene and gasoline will also work however I caution the use of these as they will also attack the glues that hold the air filter sections together. Remove the air filter cage and immerse the filter in a bucket of the cleaning agent, squeezing the cleaner out several times should be sufficient to remove the old filter oil and some of the dirt but only some. To get all the dirt out of the filter will require a surfactant. A surfactant is a compound designed to lift dirt particles from surfaces and "hold them in suspension" so they can be removed with the application of a liquid medium. What am I talking about? Soap. Specifically dish washing liquid. Soak the filter liberally with dish washing liquid and work it through the filter working up a good lather then rinse it out with warm water. Do this twice as the first time the cleaning properties of the soap will be compromised by the remaining cleaning solution we used to remove the oil. The second time round will really work up a good head of suds that will float out any remaining dirt. After thoroughly rinsing out all the soap "squeeze" out the excess water and allow the filter to dry completely. Remember I said squeeze it not wring it, if you wring it out like some old rag I guarantee you'll tear it and if you tear it then throw it away, never use a damaged filter.

Once the filter is dry you will need a bottle of "Foam Air Filter Oil" Practically every oil company makes one of these, Silkolene, Twin Air, Maxima etc. The bottle must say Foam Air Filter Oil. Motor Oil, Gear Oil, K&N Gauze Filter oil, none of these will work and should never be used. These other oils do not possess the characteristics required. They will run off the filter quickly leaving the filter dry and unable to stop dirt from getting into your engine.

A pair of rubber gloves will make this next part of the job a lot more com-fortable. Holding the filter upside down over a plastic container to catch the excess, pour the filter oil inside the filter thoroughly coating it. Now using both hands squeeze the filter oil

into every part of the filter, once the filter is a uniform color you have coated every strand of the foam and can now squeeze out the excess. Your objective here is to coat every strand of the filter with the sticky air filter oil, this is what keeps the dirt out of the engine, the filter itself merely sup-ports the oil. Separately the filter and oil are worthless but together they make a formidable barrier against the dirt that could cost you a bundle in repair bills. Now place the filter over the cage and set it aside for a minute while you clean the inside of your airbox.

If you don't have one of the airbox covers that Twin Air sells (great product) then stuff a clean rag into the air boot, this will keep any loose dirt from falling into the intake. Spray the inside of the airbox with WD40 and wipe out all the dirt with a clean rag. The reason we do this is so that when we are installing the filter we don't knock any dirt into the intake boot or smear dirt onto our nice clean filter. Some people like to smear grease on to the Air Filter lip to create a better seal, I find this unnecessary but if it makes you feel better go ahead. After you have the air filter lined up correctly on the airbox tighten the wing nut and run your hands around the base of the filter to make sure its securely sealed against the air box. Re-install the seat and you're ready to ride. Oh and when you get a new bike don't assume that the filter is ready to go, nearly every one I've seen has very little or no oil at all.

Of all the things you have to do to maintain a race bike I can't stress enough the importance of the air filter. It's a good idea to have at least three filters for your bike as this will guaran-tee that you always have two cleaned and oiled filters ready to go. The advantages to this are on very dusty days it is a good idea to replace the filter between motos. As the filter clogs your engine cannot breathe efficiently and power will be decreased, also an airfilter can only hold so much dirt, once the threshold is reached dirt will be able to pass through the filter.

If you'd like to know more about this subject or if you have any questions at all about any other maintenance procedures don't hesitate to look us up at the races, we are always happy to answer your questions.
