CAUGHT IN THE ACTSponsored by:

Well, here we are at the end of another great race season. it never ceases to amaze me that another one has been here and gone. i just hope that the winter moves at the same frantic pace.

2008 promises to be a year of opportunity. At press time the initial “big Picture” seems to be continually growing. Motocross racers will find more series in the District 6 region to participate in than they could ever hope for.

i guess in one case that means that our sport is strong and that demand for racing is healthy in our neck of the woods. on the other hand i would recommend to everybody to hire a good event planner if you want to make any sense out of it. they say choices are good - 2008 will allow you many. Stay tuned to the pages of MrA, we’ll

have all of the schedules and will do our best to spell it all out in plain english.

the harescramble scene is strong as well and will again offer race series’ from District 6 and the PA States. Don’t forget the eceA and north east Series and there’s talk of another youth series spinning off the eceA. We’ll have two nationals, a gncc and a east coast Youth national all in our area so stay in touch. Wow, are you keeping up. Actually i can’t wait, it all sounds very exciting.

back to 2007, this is our year end issue which means a little bit of a break coming up. We would like to thank everybody out there that participates in our great sport in any way. As always our society is changing rapidly, but the one thing we can count on is our weekends at the race track. Please be conscious of whats going on around you and continue to support the people that make what we do possible. Working together we’ll always be able to count on our weekends at the track. Without it, who knows?

We’ll be taking a month off to breath then we’ll come sailing back in early February with our Pre - Motorama issue. Please remember our distribution channels are changing and it’s never been a more important time than now to stay in touch because the times, they are a changing.

until next time.Jim bull, MrA

WELCOME TO THE NORTH EAST OFFROAD CHAMPiONSHiP SERiES.For 2008 we are starting an exciting new off-road racing series. the neoc was formed from a group of volunteers dedicated to off-road riders. our goal is to create a fun, family oriented series with a mix of competition and total commitment to producing the finest off-road events in the north east (quite possibly the country). our courses will be a mix of woods, MX, rocks, mountains, enduro cross and south jersey sand & roots. it will be some of the best terrain to hone, skill and challenge our off-road riders. All of our events are going to be a 2 day format, you can get more details on the schedule & format page. We are using a new transponder scoring system that allows you to pass right through the scoring barrels without stopping and a live real time scoring tent with LeD screen for the rider and live announcing. the neoc SerieS is an Adult, Youth harescramble and Pit bike championship Series. We are doing a 2 day venue because we want to give all riders what they have been looking for, more seat time, c split from main and of course our exiting new pitbike championship series. the pitbike series will consist of MX, Supercross, under the lights, enduro cross and Harescramble. All pitbike events will be 2 moto format. For our first year we are going to do 7-8 events through nJ and PA. We will have some of the best courses the ne has to offer. We will be kicking off the 2008 season in Mid-March and ending September with the banquet following in october. We can’t wait

for the new season to start. We have great and dedicated sponsors on board with the neoc series to make this a banner year. We look forward to some of the new additions and ideas for the neoc series like.... at every event each rider (youngest to oldest) will have a chance to win an extreme pitbike from Apollo, Pro & A rider Pay outs, videos for the youth & adult harescramble and pitbike races, chat forum, Saturday night family entertainment, movie night, games for the youngins & adults and stories by the campfires. Keep posted to the neoc site for more updates and information as we complete the website. All 2008 information flyers, rules and applications will be posted on this site ASAP. Any questions or comments go to our contact us page. Also make sure you check out the FAQ page. it will help answer some of your questions you

might have. our Sincerest thanks, brian & noel Hartem along with our group of dedicated offroad families.

on october 27-28 the go PAMX Series brought its final round of 2007 to the Doublin gap MX Park. With it came the talented racers from the western part of the state along with factory contingency money from the big four factories. in addition, racers participated in the first ever automated sign up procedure in our area. this allows you to sign up when you arrive at the track thru a computer station. it speeds up the process while helping to eliminate common mistakes. everyone seemed to like the new system and said it was a breeze to operate. Look for more of this in 2008 at all MDrA race Series events as well as Doublin gap and Pleasure Valley races.the Four Stroke class was first off the gate today with local team green rider Lowell Spangler running away from the competition in moto # 1. in the second Four Stroke moto, PAMX expert rider Steve roman got out to the early lead but it would be Spangler slipping under him right after the finish line on only the second lap of the race. Spangler would again pull away for the o/A on the day. roman would be your man in both premiere expert divisions. in 125 A racing action roman would swap moto wins with another PAMX rider t.J.

Phillips and in 250 A, roman and D6 racer Damien Plotts would go at it giving roman both o/A’s on the day. the common denominator in all of the above racing is that all of these guys were riding Kawasaki Four Stroke motorcycles. other winners on the day included 4 moto sweeps by Kelly Snider and Jack rogers racing in the mini divisions and another Kawasaki PAMX pilot Dylan Slusser winning both 250 b and Four Stroke college boy. All in all in looks like Kawasaki landed atop the podium 14 times at the final round of the team green PA State championship Series.things like this just make me go – Hmmmm!!You can check out all of today’s winners here in MrA and make sure you log onto: www.mcracingaction.com to view all of the day’s event photos. For information on the 2008 PA State Series check out: www.gopamx.com.

both the north east Harescramble Series and the District 6 Harescramble Series wrapped up in early november at the Dutchmen MX Park. You couldn’t have asked for a better day to go racing with the cooler temps, bright sunshine and next to no mud at a course that has become famous for the brown sticky goo.the day kicked off as usual with the youth quad race. ryan brinker would get out to the early lead with national # 2 gncc racer Derrec robinson right on his tail followed by Kyle Slane and Katie Kearney. early in the race brinker would develop a mechanical problem which eventually put him back to 5th place. this allowed the front runners to advance with robinson taking over the lead. i believe Slane had some quad issues as well and when robinson made a quick pit stop Kearney was able to slip by and hold it to the end. trevor Mcnulty would end up rounding out the top three.next up would be the youth motorcycle divisions. the front Supermini row was stacked with talent with this years top runners along with several riders that have moved up from the younger divisions. this time of year is always good with the mix of new talent bumping up for the coming season. today’s race would leave no disappointment with Supermini fast guy nick

Davis taking the win followed by two guys that just moved up from the 85 (7-11) ranks. ethan Jaudas would race to the second place spot followed by Danny bromley in third.the adult bikes were up next with local pro motocrosser casey clark coming out for some end of season seat time. clark would get out to the early lead and cruise to the win. Andrew DeLong would finish a few minutes back in second followed by tyler Mccreight in third. Some close battles on the day saw the top three Senior b guys come thru the barrels together with Steve Powers grabbing the win and the district title with only seconds separating Dustin Morris and Steve Hoffman in the 201-open c division. Patrick DeSantis would round out the podium in third.the afternoon quad race would wrap up the days event with Jarrod Mcclure and rob Hertz battling

the entire race with Mcclure coming out on top for the o/A and open A win. the open b class saw a good race between Joseph Papa and Jason ellis with Papa grabbing the two minute advantage in the end. the utility class would end the season with chad Kline finishing a mere 20 seconds ahead of george richards.this event marks the end of the D6 h a r e s c r a m b l e season. going into the last round of the enduro championship season, the stage was set to be a real barn burner. the nine time eceA grand champion Matto cycle sponsored Jack Lafferty, Jr. holding on to a fragile two point margin over the “always a bridesmaid never a bride”, Mike bradway, had a chance to make this the elusive number ten.

With Jack Jr’s equally talented family in tow, his younger brother’s, both the eight time national enduro champion red bull KtM Michael Lafferty, as well as local favorite and former two time eceA champion richard Lafferty, then throw in their father multi time Super Senior champion Matto cycle rider Jack Lafferty Sr. and we were ready to rumble!

the week’s rain was promising a mud fest of epic proportions, but alas, the ground must have been so dry prior to the rain that it soaked in perfectly. in addition Sunday morning the competitors all awoke to a beautiful sunny and warmer than usual for october day making this a traction rich, high speed affair, rather than the survival of the fittest that was expected by the faint of heart no show pre entrants.

the Delaware State enduro has an intense history of being one of the tougher runs when wet. the Fairway cycle Sponsored Mike bradway started the day off with a questionable burn early on by an over zealous check volunteer. it was looking good for Jack Jr. who was as usual up to speed and on target to that point. However this would be over turned in the name of justice at the end of the day.

With his two point burn correction and a lot of high speed prowess Mike bradway would in fact break his Susan Lucci like streak at the end of the day besting Jack Jr. and in fact winning the 2007 season championship with a third place overall finish on the day. Meanwhile the eight time

national champion red bull KtM rider Michael Lafferty was well on his way to dominating the rest of the field with an impressive ten point besting of the rest of the field.

Placing second overall was Michael’s older brother Yamaha mounted richard Lafferty in fourth and just ahead of Jack Jr. we saw an impressive showing by eceA young gun and Matto cycle competitor Andrew Delong.

not to be out done by his children, Jack Lafferty Sr, also pulled off yet another victory in the Master’s class... Way to go Dad!

Jay irwin interviewYou are a long time competitor at Raceway Park. Tell us a little bit about yourself…i’m 34, from Howell, nJ and i sell cars for a living for a family business (irwin Lincoln Mercury Mazda) in Freehold, nJ. i race in +30A and +25A and once in a while 250A

How long have you been racing?Well, i raced bmx from when i was 5 or 6 until i was 12 and have been racing mx ever since - So i’ve been racing mx for 22 years

Your dad Kerry and uncle Jay started Raceway Park. Could you tell us about the history behind Raceway Park?both my father and uncle were into motorcycles as kids riding minibikes in the sandpit and trails by their house. My uncle Jay ended up taking it a little more serious and racing mx as my father did more enduros. As Jay kept racing mx, my father Kerry started drag racing at englishtown. He got to know the napp’s (the owners of raceway Park) and suggested putting an mx track in the empty field by the track entrance. He laid out the track and ran the first race ever there and from what i’ve been told, about 700 riders showed up. My father realized that it was going to be more than a weekend thing to run the races and already had a commitment at our family business - that’s when uncle Jay came in and started track management duties along with Ken Landerman.

What was it like growing up at Raceway Park?it was great! imagine being a little kid around dirt bikes, trucks, bulldozers and everything else... i spent a lot of time at the track with uncle Jay while he would be prepping the track - helping as much as a little kid could. raking wood chips on the track, aiming sprinklers and picking up trash was about all i could do though! raceway Park is even where i learned to drive. uncle Jay and Ken Landerman were a huge part of my life as a kid!

So they got you into racing motocross?racing was in my family - between my father racing mx, enduros, drag racing and go karts and big Jay an expert mxer you knew i was going to race something with an engine. in the early 80’s it seemed like people didn’t start as young as they do now so they kept me racing bMX until i was 12. i was really into bMX at the time and didn’t start getting the itch for mx until i was about that age anyway so it worked out for them!

Back when Jay and Kenny Landerman ran the track motocross was really just starting to gain ground in NJ. Riders like

Bob Hannah used to go there often. What was it like to spend some time with the Hurricane?it was really cool. i have a picture of us together and i was so excited and nervous to be taking a picture with him! it was really cool for me because i got a lot of time with riders like that but in a relaxed environment - not like the autograph signing sessions. i got to talk to and hang out with people like tony D, Jo Jo Keller and Jeff Ward and plenty of others too.

How about the time you got

to meet Malcolm Forbes and Liz Taylor…i didn’t even know who Malcolm Forbes was at the time but everyone knew Liz taylor.

Malcolm Forbes had a motorcycle club and took a ride with the whole club one day and the came to watch the races. i guess he and Liz taylor were dating so she came with him. they made their way to Ken Landerman and my uncle and asked for people to watch and root for. i was one of the people they were told to root for and i got to meet them and have a picture taken.

You spent some time working with Brian Deegan back in the beginning of the Mullisha, what was that like?it was a lot of fun! i moved in with him because i wanted a change and ronnie Faisst (who also was his roommate) told me there was an open room and to come on out! it was the very beginning of fmx and riders were just being able to make a living from it and we spent a lot of time riding bmx, wakeboarding (Deegan got a boat to use every summer as a sponsorship deal) and going out to clubs just about every night!. but as the sport grew my responsibilities grew too. i ran the business side of the metal mulisha, shot video for 2 movies he put out, worked on his bikes and i also worked at skin industries in sales too. Don’t get me wrong - i had a lot of responsibilities but most of them were all part of the fun. i mean, is carrying a camera everywhere we went or wiping the dust of a bike at the xgames really considered work? unfortunately for me, i was not really fitting into the whole mulisha thing and brian as my boss and landlord told me to hit the road! oh well i missed Jersey anyway.

What is your best Raceway Park memory?i don’t know if this is best, but most memorable - being involved in lighting the staircase on fire with hay bales after the Kawasaki race one year. because of that i’m not even allowed to light a grill at raceway Park! i’d have to say the best memory just meeting my friends tommy and Shawn ulikowski, richie Zupko, rich rike (rip), Ken Landerman and the Kesslers. Without raceway Park there is no way i would have met these people.

Do you have a favorite race or favorite rider over the years?Favorite race would have to be the 1991 Kroc when i won 500 amateur on my father’s bike when i weighed about 130 lbs.! Favorite racer would be Mickey Kessler. i’ve learned so much from him over the years and still learning to this day.

What does the future hold for you?First i want to heal up after breaking my heel 2 months ago so i can start riding again! Long term is i just want to keep riding and racing and be involved at raceway Park.

Saturday night november 17th brought the bP Promotions PA State Harescramble Series banquet to the Holiday inn in grantville, PA. Just over 300 revelers attended the evenings festivities that saw 32 class champions crowned. the evening started with a full course buffet style dinner leading into the awards ceremony that was hosted by series founder Joe bromley. Joe along with his brother bill and their wives bernie and Pam started the series 8 years ago with the hopes of creating a local series that would bring great competition and abundant contingencies and awards for the racers of our area. After covering the series for the last six years i would have to say they’ve been a success. the awards and giveaways are phenomenal and the racers loyal. MSr / Answer and Pro taper have been the major series sponsors and at this years banquet close to $9000.00 in their merchandise alone was given away to racers that chose to buy one set of gear in the beginning of the season. other sponsors include Kenda tires uSA along with KtM, Suzuki and Polaris as well as a host of local supporting dealers. class champion and special awards were given away thru out the evening. everything from riders of the Year in different categories to triple crown winners to a Hard Luck Award offered by commerce bank. expert racer Jed Haines qualified for that award by going thru three motorcycles in this years

series. there were service and safety awards and the always special, Sportsman of the Year award. this year the award went to the tony Smith family in support of the bange Family and the PA State Series. in talking with tony after the banquet he asked that we thank all of the riders and their families for their thoughts and prayers thru out this difficult 2007 season. He said that he and his family feel honored to be a part of the PA State Harescramble family.2008 promises to be bigger and better than ever. the series will consist of 15 rounds with the best 13 finishes counting towards the year end championship. We will participate in two national Harescrambles, a gncc and an east coast Youth national. Major sponsors are again coming on board and it looks like in the near future we may see contingency money from some of the major manufacturers. 2008 should see limited transponder scoring and there has been a Pee Wee Sponsorship program introduced that will

reward a racer with a complete gear sponsorship for getting good grades in school. All sound like great reasons to check out this series for 2008. it just keeps getting better year after year. You can also check out all of the award winners on our website at: www.mcracingaction.com. We’ll see you all next year.

the Delaware enduro riders hosted the final round of the 2007 eceA Harescramble Series at blue Diamond Park in mid november. it was a cold and rainy day but over 600 racers came out to compete on what has become one of their favorite courses of the year.the Pee Wee racers kicked off the days racing

action with five classes coming off the line. these young racers are the future of our sport and today’s race saw 95 entries emerge out of this group. it would be the day of the J with KtM racer Jared Jennings taking the o/A win with close to a minute and a half to spare over Kawasaki mount Michael Mcgee followed by another KtM

rider timothy Lambert rounding out the top three. the Pee Wee racers competed on a roughly two mile course around the blue Diamond facility.

next up were the youth racers with 162 entries. the Der club expanded their course out to 6 miles including the blue Diamond motocross tracks and the woods and fields sections around the facility. the classes lined up in a grass field and raced towards an uphill section that bared hard to the left at the top. the “ice Man” nick

Davis would be the first to the top of the hill but by the end of lap one Zach Shepps would work his way by and race on to the o/A win. Davis would get close but had to settle for second with tyler Haney bringing in the final podium spot. other close racing action in the youth divisions saw ethan Walter edge out ethan Jaudas in the 10-11 85cc class by a mere 20+ seconds.the main event would go off shortly after 1:00 pm. As the day wore on the temperatures seemed to drop and the rain picked up its tempo. 379 racers lined the field as they waited for the green flag to drop. the AA riders were the first up the hill with one of the day’s best and season longs best battles as they say – off to the races. cycle techs Jerod Stoner would be the guy leading the pack with Matto cycles Andrew Delong right on his heels. these two KtM riders came into the event only a few points apart and the outcome of today’s race would determine who would finish in the second overall spot for the series. As the numerous classes made their way thru the start, a bottleneck began to develop just 100 yards into the race. there was a deep mud hole that was claiming victims and by about the middle of the starting rows, things had settled to

a snails pace getting thru the bog. Fortunately all seemed to get thru unscathed and the race was on. As the racers came thru the barrels at the end of lap one we found Stoner with the lead followed by Andrew tsakanikas then DeLong. by lap two DeLong would get by for second and that’s the way the race would stay till the end. Your A 201 – open class winner Sam Forrester would end up third o/A on the day.this event wrapped up the eceA series for 2007. congratulations to all eceA champions and stay

tuned to the pages of MrA for the upcoming season schedules and events and we’ll see you at your banquet in February. You can also log

Inevitable Injection – Part IIin the last article we talked about the eFi fuel delivery system. the constantly pumping fuel pump forcing fuel through the all important filter into the fuel line/rail. the pressure regulator maintaining a constant pressure in the system and the return line for the excess fuel. the last and most technical part to cover in the circuit is the injector, so what is it?

A very simple way to envision the functioning of an injector is a garden hose with a spray handle. there is pressure in the hose as there is in the fuel system, when you squeeze the handle quickly open and closed you are imitating what happens in an injector event but on a much larger and slower scale.

there are two types of injectors in use today. the most common one associated with motorcycles is the saturated drive injector. the name is derived from the fact that a constant current drives the coil to saturation. Saturation is the term given to a coil where the maximum possible magnetic field is being generated. the injector is made up of a hollow body, usually plastic, with a metering orifice in one end (fuel exit) and a fuel line attachment point with screen at the other for the fuel to enter. between this entry and exit point there is a movable stopper sometimes called the pintle that blocks the exit port. Picture a sort of needle and seat like you would find in your carb float bowl except much smaller. At the exit point you will also find a diffuser screen that will dictate atomization of the fuel as well as the spray pattern. the stopper is held in place by an internal spring.

Surrounding and within the injector body will be a coil of wire and an external electrical terminal. When current is introduced into the coil it generates a magnetic field which lifts the stopper off its seat compressing the spring and our fuel under pressure is injected into the intake. once the correct amount of fuel has been delivered the current is cut off, the field collapses and the spring pushes the stopper back on to its seat. For all intents and purposes it functions like a solenoid.

now when you take into account how fast this has to take place and the importance of when the event starts, its duration and ending, it can be mind boggling.

Here’s a few numbers to think about. A four stroke engine running at 10,000 rPM will have 84 injector events per second and the difference between open and closed in the injector is between 60 and 100 microns. i can wrap my head around the 84 events per second since i worked with reed design for so many years and they can cycle open and closed 150 + times per second. 60 to 100 microns is an impossibly small distance, figure half the width of the period at the end of this sentence. With an opening that small it’s easy to see why we cannot allow

any foreign matter to contaminate our fuel supply. oh and lets not forget opening time, it takes about 2 - 3 milliseconds for the injector to open fully, with an injector event say every 10 ms.

now bear in mind it takes longer for the magnetic field to build than it does to collapse so the opening event, lifting the stopper against spring pressure, takes longer than the closing with the helping spring pressure. the time between the

beginning of the electrical pulse and the actual opening is referred to as the dead time as very little happens as far as fuel delivery. there is a bit of flow during the closing but nothing of consequence. So you can see that during the injection event we have a ridiculously small amount of time to inject the correct amount of fuel at the correct time based on a whole bunch of variables.

these variables will have to be tracked by

sensors. i will be curious to see how many sensors we will have on our engines to help the electronic control unit (ecu) dictate the beginning and duration of the injector event

in the next article i will cover the numerous and varied types of sensors used in eFi systems, until then keep warm and don’t stop riding till the snow flies.
