Mr. Hanlon 7 th /8 th Grade Social Studies Teacher Slide 2 I chose to study Ireland. I want to travel there because that is where my ancestors on my fathers side are from. I would like to travel there to learn more about those ancestors. Slide 3 Ireland is an island to the north-west of continental Europe. To its east is the larger island of Great Britain, from which it is separated by the Irish Sea. It is the third- largest island in Europe and the twentieth-largest island on Earth. 1 2 2 Slide 4 3 Slide 5 Northern Ireland was created in 1921, when Ireland was partitioned (separated) between Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland by an act of the British parliament. Unlike Southern Ireland, which would become the Irish Free State in 1922, the majority of the population of Northern Ireland wanted to remain within the United Kingdom. 4 Slide 6 4 5 Slide 7 6 Slide 8 In 2012, Gross Agricultural Output (GAO) was valued at 6.61 billion. (DAFM) The milk category accounts for the largest share of GAO at 30% while beef accounts for 39%. Other sectors include pig 8%, sheep 4%, cereals and forage plants 17%. 7 Close to 82% of Irelands farmland is in pasture, hay and grass silage (grassland), 10% is rough grazing and 8% is in crop production. 7 Slide 9 Irelands major natural resources include: natural gas, peat, copper, lead, zinc, silver, barite, gypsum, limestone and dolomite. 8 Slide 10 The country's highest point, Carrauntuohill in the far southwest, stands at 1041 m (3,414 ft.) high. 9 & 10 Slide 11 The western coastline includes numerous sea cliffs. The most famous, and some say the most beautiful in all of Europe, are the Cliff of Moher. They reach a maximum height of just over 213 m (700 ft.). 11 & 12 9 & 10 Slide 12 The River Shannon at 386 km (240 miles) long is Ireland's longest river. It widens into four loughs (lakes) along its route. 13 & 14 Slide 13 15 Slide 14 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 16 Slide 15 Graphs are better to represent data over a period of time whereas charts are better when only frequency or spread at a given point of time is involved. 17 Slide 16 Major Exports: machinery and equipment, computers, chemicals, medical devices, pharmaceuticals; food products, animal products Major Export Partners: US 18%, UK 17.4%, Belgium 15.6%, Germany 8.4%, Switzerland 5.8%, France 5% (2012) Major Imports: data processing equipment, other machinery and equipment, chemicals, petroleum and petroleum products, textiles, clothing Major Import Partners: UK 40%, US 13.2%, Germany 7.6%, Netherlands 5.6% (2012) 18 Slide 17 Slide 18 Slide 19 http://www.aquazone.ie/photo- gallery.html# Slide 20 1.
