MPWLEADERJune 2014

It is written on OSHA’s website that developing strong safety cultures has the single greatest impact on accident reduction of any process.

And so, utilizing a dynamic top-down philosophy of total safety, MPW Industrial Services’ Facil-ity Management Division team at the Georgetown, Ky. Toyota Assembly Plant earned the 2013 Green Hat Safety Award.

The award was presented to Senior Account Manager DC Griffith and his team on April 13 as MPW provided lunch at Toyota to recognize and thank them for their efforts and sup-port.

The Green Hat takes its name from the National Safety Coun-cil’s Green Cross for Safety, which is awarded annually to an organization that “demon-

strates a steadfast commitment to improving safety and health in the workplace and beyond.”

Many MPW clients are former Green Cross recipients.

The Green Hat is presented annually by the MPW Execu-tive Staff to the team that has demonstrated the strongest commitment to health and safety. Some of the categories considered are:

• Safety culture• Observations• Recordable injuries• Safety Incidents• Near misses• D.O.T. citations• Vehicle incidents• Property damages

The Georgetown team’s con-summate dedication to safety prompted this note from the plant’s Manufacturing General Manager Paint and Plastics, Dan Antis:

DC Griffith, the site manager for MPW Industrial Services at the Toyota Georgetown Assembly Plant, has just received the Green Hat Safety Award from his corporate office. The award was to honor him and his team for their incredible safety record, achieving 822 days without a recordable injury [as of May 18, 2014].

The work MPW performs here at Toyota has moderate risk, is very tedious, and difficult. Reaching this milestone was largely due to DC’s leadership and passion for safety.

Recently MPW was chosen to Part-ner with Paint #1 to perform contract cleaning and maintenance. DC’s leadership and safety performance were two big factors in this decision.

I am looking forward to our new part-nership. Together we will take the Camry and Avalon to Lexus levels of quality.

Congratulations and great job DC!

According to Griffith, his team achieved its 2013 goal with a Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) of zero, despite a manpower increase in excess of 34,000 man-hours over the prior year.

Griffith credited everyone on his team for MPW’s safety and business successes in Georgetown.

“I am proud to have such a great group of people from our supervision, team leaders and team members,” said Griffith. “To them, it is not just a number such as TRIR, it is more personal than that; they want to have a safe environ-

ment and they do not want anyone to experience a safety incident regardless of the severity.”

More praise for the Toyota George-town team:

“Leadership drives their success and makes safety a core value. DC leads the process. He has the leadership, experi-ence and perspective to motivate his team to achieve such an outstanding safety record.”— MPW Chief Operating Officer Jim Neville

“Over the past few years, our team has received much positive recognition from

the customer in the area of safety. Win-ning MPW’s coveted Green Hat Safety Award was the culmination of the efforts put forth by the entire MPW Toyota team to ensure that employees go home safely each day.”— MPW Facility Management Support Director Shane DeFazio

George W. Bush is beginning his second term as U.S. President. Brad Pitt is still married to Jen-nifer Aniston. MySpace is the most visited social media networking site in the world. MPW Indus-trial Services does not have an OSHA-recordable incident at the ArcelorMittal Cleveland facility.

The year was 2005. Only one of these things remains unchanged.

For an industrial cleaning company, a record of zero OSHA-recordable events that exceeds eight years is nearly unimaginable.

Greg Lein, MPW Account Manager for Arcelor-Mittal, said this achievement was accomplished through MPW’s proactive process of reporting and preventing potential problems before they happen.

“In addition to our safety record, we’ve reduced our average emergency-response rate at Arcelor-Mittal to less than one hour, so we’re extremely proud of our work there,” said Lein.

The ArcelorMittal-MPW relationship has yielded more than a great safety record. It has literally become a case study in how to expand a part-nership through rapport building, consistent com-munication and exceptional job performance.

According to ICG Sales Director Mike Sokol, much of the credit for this success goes to Lein.

“ArcelorMittal represents an above-and-beyond example of what MPW can accomplish in terms of safety and efficiency,” said Sokol. “I’d like to especially recognize Greg and the Northern Ohio team for the job they’ve done establishing and growing this relationship.”

Lein and MPW were singled out by ArcelorMittal Senior Buyer Don Wilhelm at ArcelorMittal’s most recent Safety Summit, which took place May 13 in Chicago. Wilhelm proposed that all of Arcelor-Mittal’s contractors use documents designed by

Lein, Branch Manager Zach Porter and Opera-tions Manager Mike Boltz.

The documents are related to reporting and documenting data with the goal of increasing ef-ficiency and safety.

ArcelorMittal Safety Summits are biannual con-ferences where contractors are invited to share knowledge and talk about corrective actions that were taken after incidents.

Headquartered in Luxembourg, ArcelorMittal is the world’s largest steel producer, with a 2012 crude steel production of 93.6 million tons. It was rated 91st in the 2013 Fortune Global 500 rank-ing of the world’s largest corporations.

ArcelorMittal Cleveland is one of the country’s largest integrated steelmaking facilities. It is strategically located on the Cuyahoga River, with access to the Port of Cleveland and Great Lakes shipping, as well as highway and railroad ship-ping.

The plant operates two blast furnaces which can feed two steelmaking facilities capable of produc-ing 3.8 million tons of raw steel annually. The facility covers more than 950 acres of land. The plant’s buildings total 7 million square feet.

Currently, MPW handles the industrial cleaning at ArcelorMittal Cleveland’s hot mill, cold mill, and iron-producing facilities in addition to providing vacuuming and hydroblasting services.

Sokol said despite the fact that MPW has dou-bled its business at the facility in the last year, MPW’s goal is to further develop its business at other ArcelorMittal plants.

“This is a great example of how our Account Managers should utilize first-rate relationship building and customer service to grow our house accounts,” he said. ”
