Message from the Editor

Let me take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and prosperous 2016!!! Welcome to this first edition of the M. P. Shah Hospital Newsletter in 2016.

2015 was an eventful year at the M. P. Shah Hospital, one in which we got many of our key projects completed. It was the year that we enhanced the quality of our paediatric services by opening our brand new ultramodern children’s hospital – The Suryakalaben Maganlal Chandaria Children’s Medical Centre. It was also the year the hospital launched its state of the art Intensive Care Unit (ICU) which is one of its kind in the entire country as well as launching its first ever High Dependency Unit (HDU). The hospital also introduced new technology by installing a new high end mammography machine to further enhance its mammography services.

In this issue, read all about the exciting events that took place at the hospital in the last quarter of 2015, including the launch of the Florence Nightingale Week and marking the International Nurses Day for the first time in the history of the hospital. Other unique activities include the celebration of World Prem Day when we joined together to celebrate our pre-term babies.

During this quarter, M. P. Shah Hospital joined in the end-year festivities by hosting its annual Doctor’s Appreciation Cocktail to appreciate the support of all its stakeholders in the year 2015. This was also the quarter that saw the hospital assist children with Cerebral Palsy through provision of free ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) care.

Several new projects have been scheduled for the year 2016. Key amongst these is the launch of our new Dr. Kanubhai Babla Medical Centre. This new centre houses the new ICU, a private ward, an executive ward as well as a catheterization lab and a surgical day care centre.

As we begin the year 2016 we look forward to a fruitful year marked by growth and investments that will help improve our facilities as well as the variety of services the hospital is able to offer. With new facilities, high end technical equipment and the system resources which are the backbone of our organization, the heart and soul of M. P. Shah Hospital still remains the people who give so much of their time and their talent to help those in need overcome their individual challenges.

It is these doctors, nurses and other care givers who each and every day blend the miracle of compassion with the marvel of technology to make a real difference in the lives of our patients. We are committed to earning the trust and faith you place in us and are honored to be able to participate in your healthcare.

Thank you for your continued support and Happy 2016.

Our Team

As an institution, M. P. Shah Hospital is again experiencing tremendous growth in the field of clinical service provision. We have distinguished ourselves as an institution capable of offering the best quality services at an affordable rate.

I take great pleasure to acknowledge the support of the board of governors, our CEO, our staff and all our patients. Below are some of the highlights of some of the achievements we have as well as those we continue to strive to achieve: 1. Paediatric services: We have a state of the art paediatric hospital that is fully equipped and capable of managing all paediatric cases. The hospital has both hospital employed paediatricians and visiting consultants who ensure quality paediatric clinical services provision. 2. Cardiology Our Hospital cardiologists ensure provision of both invasive and non-invasive cardiology services. The available non-invasive procedures include, but are not limited to: -Electrocardiography -Echocardiography. -Cardiac stress tests. We will have our ultramodern cardiac catheterization services rolled out in a few weeks. 3.Clinics At M. P. Shah Hospital, patients are able to get all clinical subspecialty services. As a hospital, we take pride in providing these type of services. Our clinic services are a large part of what distinguishes us from any other hospital. 4. Critical care services We now have all our critical care patients admitted in our new, ultramodern ICU. To support this service, we also have a step down/step up unit called the HDU. These units ensure our doctors comfort in providing the delicate type of service for the unstable and critical patients. 5. Education ‘Medicine goes in tandem with education, research and innovation’ With this vision, our hospital is now an educational centre for the newly graduated medical doctors. Beginning this year, we have been

accredited by the Kenyan medical board to take our first batch of newly trained doctors.

The future of our hospital as a centre for education and research has an earnest beginning in this regard.

Generally Preventive health also called health maintenance is divided into:A. Wellness checkB. Screening checkC. Gender specific cancer screening tests

1. Early identification and intervention towards disease management are associated with better patient clinical outcomes.2. All ages should be able to visit and be seen by their doctors not when in illness3. Preventive health care in paediatrics mostly concentrates on identifying any hereditary diseases ,opportunistic infections / immunizations or issues related with growth and achievement of milestones which impacts on the future overall health and growth of a baby.4. Adult preventive health programs have both the general adult screen measures in place and gender specific screening tools.5. All adult males should undergo: a wellness check that screens for lipid abnormalities, blood pressure, screening tests for diabetes mellitus gender specific cancer screen for colon cancer and prostate cancer6. All adult Females should undergo: a wellness check to screen for lipid issues ,BP issues Screening test for diabetes mellitus Gender specific cancer screen for cervical cancer, breast cancer in addition to colon cancer.

We look forward to another exciting year as we continue our dedication to our patient community.

Testimonial 1Dear Friends and Family, it has been two weeks since my incident and many people are still asking me what happened. Here is my account of events as it unfolded that night.

It was just another day in Nairobi. I woke up, had my breakfast, showered and left for work. I run a small studio at Adams Arcade, Ngong Road – Studio Mona. I had a pretty average day. It also happened to be the day before Diwali. In Hinduism, we call it ‘Kali Chaudas’, an auspicious day that symbolizes the dark and negative energy before the celebration of light. Most people stay indoors on this day. In my case, my mother had invited me home that evening for a small prayer and offerings. Even though I had plans, I made sure I fulfilled my mother’s wish.

At about 7pm I left home (in Westlands) with my mother’s blessing and went to meet a friend (in Parklands) who owed me some money. I collected 80, 000/- from him and was on my way to meet another friend for dinner in Lavington. I ended up in traffic on the slip off Forest road connecting to the Ojijo/ Ngara roundabout. It must have been about 7:30pm. It was pouring cats and dogs.

There I was, sitting in my car for about 10 minutes in stand still traffic when I noticed a man wearing an off white rain jacket walk passed me. I didn’t think anything of it, but when I glanced at my side mirror, I noticed he had turned around and had started walking back. Within a few seconds he was knocking on my window with his gun and I remember thinking to myself, “Today is my day, just another day in Nairobbery.” And we’ve all been schooled on cooperation; just give them what they want. So I opened my window a few inches and he said, ‘Leta kila kitu! (Give me everything!)’ and cocked his gun. I don’t have much practice with guns, but I do know when a gun is live. So I reached into my pocket and grabbed all the money I could get my hands on and gave it to him. It must have been about 10, 000/-. I saw him drop a little on the floor and the rest he shoved into his pocket. I thought, “Ok that must be good enough, he’ll let me go.” But he wasn’t done. His arm came straight back into the window and started tugging on my Silver chain, banging my head against the window. To ease his robbery, I opened my window fully and he finally managed to take off the chain. He shoved that into his pocket as well, all the time with the gun in his right hand.

Now that the window was fully open, he managed to get a little closer and rested his gun on my stomach. He asked for my phone, to which I replied, ‘it’s an iPhone,’ and he immediately realized it would be of no use to him. ‘Ah sitaki,’ he said. He then noticed the ring on my index finger and began pulling on that aggressively. It was too tight to take off but he was determined. He kept tugging. This is when I think I made the biggest mistake; I looked directly into his eyes. All I saw was hunger, fear and suffering. He must have been doing this for a reason.

Maybe his family hadn’t eaten for a few days. Maybe he had a young child to feed at home. Maybe he had hospital bills to pay. Who knows? I felt his pain and gestured to him that I still have 80, 000/- in my pocket, leave the ring. Before I could even reach for the money, he shot me in my abdomen.

My first reaction was shock, not because I had been shot, but because he didn’t want the money or didn’t understand what I was trying to say. Maybe he thought I was bluffing.

Maybe he thought I was reaching for a gun. Maybe I had looked at him for far too long. Or maybe he just panicked.I’ll never know. All I could say was, “why did you do this?”Then I saw him walk away in the pouring rain and there I was, seated in my nice comfortable Prado with blood stained hands. I thought to myself, “Today is NOT your day.

I am NOT going to die like this!” Now I’m stuck in traffic, a bullet through me, no one around me knew what had just happened; no one had heard a thing. I knew if I stayed in the car I would bleed to death. I had to think quick. My pharmaceutical knowledge kicked in – minimize blood loss and get medical help as soon as possible. I had to get myself to the roundabout, jump into someone’s car and get to the nearest hospital. I must have been about 50 metres from the roundabout. So I clench my abdomen muscles, open the car door and get out. I collapse to the floor. My right leg is numb. I pull myself to the curb of the road, recollect what’s just happened and say to myself, “Today I am NOT going to die.” I gather all my courage, pull myself up to the car door, reach in for my phone, close the window, turn off the car, lock it, put the keys in my pocket and begin my journey to the roundabout.

Clients FeedbackWhile limping down the road in the pouring rain, clenching my abdomen as tight as I could, I tried to call my mother.Once, twice thrice… No answer. I made it to the roundabout when my right leg completely gave away. I fell to the floor, begging for help from people driving passed. My shirt was getting bloodier by the minute and the pain was agonizing.

But I knew I had to stay strong and soldier through. Passing out was not an option at this point. Many people looked me straight in the eye and drove straight past. That’s how cynical we have become here. I don’t think they didn’t want to help but they must have thought I was part of a gang, pretending to be injured, waiting to rob them. They didn’t want to put themselves in that danger. People started crowding around me. I reached for my phone again and started searching for the one person I knew who always had their phone on them, my sister. I got straight through to her, “I’ve been shot! I’m in so much pain…Aaahh… I’m at the Ojijo Road roundabout… get some help quick!” Just then, two good Samaritans, Eva and Lillian, got to me with their car doors wide open, shouting, ‘Put him in! Put him in!” As people helped me into the car, a man reached over, pulled my phone straight out of my hand and walked away calmly.

This made me wonder how desperate and hungry our Wananchi can be. Stealing from a dying man, they must be pretty desperate. I’m still no judge of that man’s actions, all I know is that we need to create more jobs in Kenya.I was finally on the way to a hospital with two angels who were surely sent from above. Eva, who was in the driver’s seat, drove to the hospital faster than any rally driver could have. At the gate of the hospital, against the Askari’s will, Eva rushed into the trauma parking. I recollected myself again, got out, walked into the trauma unit where I saw a wheelchair and collapsed into it. I shouted to the nurse, “I’ve been shot in my right abdomen, I’m B+ blood and I’m slightly hypotensive! If you need a deposit, it’s in my pocket!” The 80,000/- was still in tact. I started to lose consciousness. Everything was getting blurry. I began to see glimpses of my family gathering outside and I must have passed out at that point.

I wake up the next day in the High Dependency Unit (HDU) with a numb leg and excruciating pain. This is when I found out that the bullet had actually gone straight

through my abdomen and lodged into my car seat. The bullet had ruptured my colon and grazed my spine. Lucky enough, by some miracle, all vital organs were safe. I had been through an intensive surgery performed by Dr. M. R. Khan. He had cut out my ascending colon (including appendix) and re- stitched my digestive system back together. The surgery was very successful.

Later that day, I was moved to a private room and my recovery process commenced. Over the next 7 days, I must have had over 500 visitors (family, friends and well wishers). I had a great team of nurses, doctors, physiotherapists and pharmacist at M.P Shah Hospital ensuring I had a quick recovery. I had people from all over the world sending me well wishes and good thoughts. I had family and friends by me every single night. It is with all their positive thoughts, blessings and good vibrations that I can say I am on my way to full recovery. And of course, if it wasn’t for Eva and Lillian, I would probably be a dead man… I will be forever thankful to them for saving my life.

I am so grateful to still be alive. It is almost shocking how lucky I have been in this situation. What happened was unfortunate and I have no hatred for anyone following this ordeal. I don’t blame anyone. It was just a case of wrong place at the wrong time. Whatever the case, I am a stronger man and nothing can stop me now. I have a new zest for life. I was saved for a reason. There is a purpose I need to fulfill. I’m only 31years old and have a long life ahead of me to make a difference in this world.

And with the help of our great governor, Dr. Evans Kidero, who patiently gave an ear to my story, I hope we can make a difference in this great city of Nairobi. Let us stand together and work towards creating more jobs in Kenya, which in turn will lead to better security.“I believe that if you don’t derive a deep sense of purpose from what you do, if you don’t come radiantly alive several times a day, if you don’t feel deeply grateful at the tremendous good fortune that has been bestowed on you, then you are wasting your life. And life is too short to waste.”

THANK YOU-YOU ARE WONDERFUL PEOPLE

I wish to thank the whole medical fraternity of MP SHAH Hospital for the manner in which they handled me during my illness in August and September2015

Special thanks also goes to Dr Waihenya,Dr Mwanamisi ,the ICU physician and her team of doctors and nurses who brought me “ back to life” when I was in a coma,Dr Chabeda ;the radiologist,Dr Dave; the Haematologist. All these wonderful fellows battled to keep me going.Last but not least, the physiotherapist, Regina and the two nurses; Elizabeth and Pamella who took time to take care of me up to our residence in KEMI.May God bless you all for your kindness. It will be well with you.

Dear Nurse ........

I cant thank you enough for the care and attention you gave to my wife last year before she passed on. It was a very difficult timefor me and my family, but it could have been much worse without your dedication and expertise. My family and I are truly greatful for the time you took to talk with us to help us better undersdand our

options. The competency of you and your team was very inspiring. Never have i seen such a remarkable group of individuals and team members to mention a few, Dr. Abwao, Dr. Mbogo and Saitoti. You were kind, caring, and went above and beyond to make us comfortable. Cancer as a disease is ruthless, merciless, frustrating and very rough. But good oncologists and nurses like you make this illness a little less rough. Thank you again. You are truely doing God’s work.

Dear Dr ..........

I must take this opportunity on behalf of Jai, Nixsha, Bansi and myself to most heartfully thank you for the excellent service you gave us during our daughter Nixsha’s poorly health. Truly speaking I have never had this kind of service in any hospital ever before and I have no words to express my sincere most gratitude especially to you for the hard work, late evening duties that you

performed out of your office hours and the support that you gave us. You are truly a gem that MP Shah hospital has found and I pray that the almighty grants you all mine and Bansi’s good luck for all you endeavours in the future.

You are truly a star and I respect you totally for the great attention and detail that you conferred upon my family. May you be blessed always.

On 20th November 2015, M. P. Shah Hospital conducted free screening for the staff of KPMG Kenya. The free medical camp was held at the KPMG offices at the ABC Place on Waiyaki Way in Westlands. During the medical camp, staff received free screening including Blood Pressure checks, BMI measurement, blood sugar testing and free breast examination.

M.P. Shah Hospital has been in existence for the last 83 years, as a not-for-profit organization with one single social objective of providing quality, affordable health care services to the community at large. Currently it is a 200 bed, multi-super-specialty, state of the art, tertiary care Hospital.

In its endeavor to improve health care awareness and quality of life for women, M. P. Shah Hospital partnered with Faraja Trust to conduct cervical cancer screening for all female employees of both Nakumatt Holdings and Africa Yoga Project (AYP).

The screening involved conducting a ‘pap

smear’ also called a ‘pap test’, it is a procedure to screen for pre-cancerous lesions and cervical cancer. Detecting cervical cancer early with a pap smear gives one a greater chance of a cure. A pap smear can also detect changes in one’s cervical cells that suggest cancer may develop in the future. Detecting these abnormal cells with a pap smear is one’s first step in halting the possible development of cervical cancer.

In addition to cervical screening, the ladies were able to get free breast examination and also learn how to conduct a self-breast examination. The program was conducted in the month of December 2015

M. P. Shah Hospital was honored by the visit of H.E. Ambassador Yahel Vilan on 28th November 2015. During his visit, he engaged the hospital management on new emerging trends in medical practice some of which include the use of clowns in speeding up patient’s recovery process.

The celebrations not only appreciated how far our preterm babies have come, but also serve as a forum to inform mothers on various aspects including health, nutrition as well as changing trends in the market.

Traditionally, World Prem Day is celebrated worldwide on the 17th of November every year. About Avital Dvory and Medical clown in Israel“Not always we can change reality, but we can change our point of view of it”.(Professor Sancho the La Sponga)

On Friday 18th December 2015, M. P. Shah Hospital hosted the Deputy Ambassador of Israel accompanied by two medical clowns based in Israel. Together they introduced the DREAM DOCTOR PROJECT. It is a unique concept involving the use of a MEDICAL CLOWN in patient care. The concept is aimed at bringing the patient happiness while at the same time relieving anxiety and the trauma related to hospitalization.

During their visit, they got to see some patients in the wards and held a workshop for the M. P. Shah Hospital staff on how clowning is therapeutic to patient wellbeing. The hospital staff got to learn how to play with children who are sick and admitted at our Paediatric hospital.

Dream Doctors are professional clowns and stage artists, who trained in patient’s therapy during hospital admissions or ambulatory treatment. The Israel Dream Doctors project integrates professional

medical clowns into the medical services provided at Israeli hospitals, and are integrated into the multidisciplinary medical staff, principally but not only, in paediatric wards.

As expressive arts therapists and paraprofessional caregivers, the Dream Doctors makes a unique contribution to patients treatment, recovery and rehabilitation processes. The Dream Doctors activity transforms patients and families hospitalization into a more pleasant and less traumatic experience.

Home care services is a specialized area of practice that provides in-home care and custom care support services. Individuals who receive this type of care often have more acute and complex needs, calling for an increasing amount of their care to be safely provided in the home. The service also allows a person with special needs to stay in their home. The care is designed for individuals with a wide range of health care needs that can be given in the home for illness or injury. Home health care is usually less expensive, more convenient, and is as effective as care one would get in a hospital from skilled healthcare providers that includes doctors, nurses, physical and occupational therapist, phlebotomist (one who takes blood sample for

laboratory analysis), and nutritionist. Our care is flexible and versatile to meet the necessary healthcare needs of individuals and family, while at the same time promoting independence within the home and community.

The goal of home health care is to treat an illness or injury. Home health care helps the individual get better, regain independence, and become as self-sufficient as possible, all in the comfort of the home and close to the family members and significant other, while ensuring delivery of quality care. We are a service provider that strives to ensure your loved ones are comfortable at home for as long as possible.

The services one would receive include: • Check your blood pressure, temperature, heart rate, and breathing. • Check that you’re taking your prescription and other drugs and any treatments correctly. • Ask if you’re having pain. • Check what you’re eating and drinking. • Check your safety in the home. •Teach you about your care so you can take care of yourself. • Perform physiotherapy to regain muscle strength and mobility • Coordinate your care. This means regular communication with you, your doctor, and anyone else who gives you care. • Perform wound care for pressure sores or a surgical wound • Patient and family/caregiver education • Intravenous or nutrition therapy • Giving of Injections • Monitoring serious illness and unstable health status
