* Prostate cancer is the number one cancer threat to Canadian men* Men over 40 should have an annual PSA test* 50% of Canadian men do not book an annual doctor’s appointment * It will afflict one in six Canadian men in their lifetime – 24,600 this year alone* Rates of incidence and mortality are comparable to those of breast cancer in women* Low public awareness leads to unnecessary deaths* Early detection can lead to cure rates up to 90%

Early DetectionPCC advises men and their doctors take the time to discuss the merits of

prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood testing followed by a digital rectal examination (DRE) for early detection of prostate cancer.

AGE 40: Establish a baseline PSA value. While the threat of prostate cancer is minimal at this age, it also precedes the onset of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), the natural enlargement of the prostate that commonly occurs with age. Unless your resulting baseline PSA score is of concern to your doctor, the PSA need only be repeated every 5 years until age 50. Men at higher risk of prostate cancer should begin annual PSA and DRE monitoring at age 40.

AGE 50: All men should begin annual or semiannual PSA monitoring If they have not yet done so. A minimal increase in PSA levels against your baseline score often (in consultation with your physician) requires no further action until your next annual test. A significant increase should prompt a discussion with your doctor or urologist about follow up PSA blood tests.

Combining the results of PSA blood testing with DRE increases both the diagnostic power and the accuracy of

these early detection methods.

* Movember is a campaign in partnership with the Movember Foundation* The moustache is our ribbon, it’s the vehicle by which we raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer

* Men grow a moustache (“a mo”) during the month of November to raise awareness of the disease

* The campaign culminates at the end of November with numerous parties - celebratory “galas”, plus office and campus parties* Funds are raised by individuals and teams – in 2009, Movember raised $7.8 million for prostate cancer in Canada.

• Guys register at www.movember.com and start 1 Movember with a clean shaven face

• The Movember participants, known as Mo Bros, have the remainder of the month to grow and groom their moustache while raising money for prostate cancer research

• While growing a Mo is left to the guys, Mo Sistas (ladies that support their guys or just love Mos!) form an important part of Movember by recruiting Mo Bros and attending the highly anticipated Gala Parties

• Movember is about having fun and putting the moustache back on the face of fashion for a critically important cause – prostate cancer research

Movember funds have allowed PCC to invest in programs that were once unachievable due to lack of funding and resources. Over the past three years Movember has become the primary funder for some very exciting, and innovative programs that could change the future of prostate cancer, and men’s health as we know it.
