Also known as Denali, Mount McKinley was given its modern moniker by the prospector William A. Dickey, who named it in honor of William McKinley, the soon-to-be president of the United States .
Mount McKinley - The Highest Peak in North America
The mountain has been a climbing destination for more than a century, although early attempts to summit the peak were largely unsuccessful. An American judge named James Wickersham made the first attempt at climbing Mount McKinley in 1903, but it would it take another 10 years before the mountain was officially scaled by a climbing party led by Hudson Stuck and Harry Karstens. Today, Mount McKinley remains a popular climbing peak summited by several hundred climbers annually .
