COOL-looking concept theFlextTreme has beenhailed as the clearestindication yet ofVauxhall’s intention to be

a producer of very stylish butpractical cars.

General Motors’ European designchief Mark Adams, speaking at theGeneva Motor Show this week, saidthat future Vauxhalls will be carspeople will be proud to buy.

The American-owned giant hasannounced it will triple itsinvestment and has committed 1.9billion euros for the so-called GMEurope viability plan.

And Adams says he wants toshow that electric vehicles do nothave to be boring but can, with thetechnology developed by GM, beboth environmentally friendly andenjoyably dynamic.

The FlexTreme can run just onits battery for around 30 miles or,with a small internal combustionengine replenishing the battery,expect a range 10 times as far.

"FlexTreme will never go intoproduction on its own but showsyou do not have to use the EVtechnology in a conventional carbut have something sporting," saidAdams.

"We have styling elements onFlexTreme which you will see infuture Vauxhall and Opel modelsvery soon, such as the new face.

"It gives a glimpse over thehorizon of what is coming from GMin terms of design expressions. Astylish car is a compromise andwith the Flextreme we wanted toshow how practical a design couldbe as well."

He added: "We are really makingan aspirational car which showselectric vehicles aren't just smooth,rounded shapes, which can beboring, but can be a car whichmakes people proud to own and thatthe company is moving forward."

Meanwhile, the company alsochose Geneva to announce plans tobuild a generation of new carswhich do not burn fossil fuels.

The vision was laid out by NickO’Reilly, the company’s Europeanchief executive, at the Geneva MotorShow.

O’Reilly, who drove a prototypeVauxhall Ampera 500 miles toGeneva from the company’sEuropean headquarters inGermany, said that the long termplan was to develop a family of carswhich did not rely on petrol ordiesel.

He said electric cars would be foreveryday commuting, extended

range models would be for longdistances while fuel cell cars whichburn hydrogen would appeal todrivers who wanted moreperformance.

At the moment the Ampera uses asmall petrol engine to generateelectricity which is used to drivethe car. Overall it produces only a

fraction of the tailpipe emissions ofa conventional engine and has arange of 350 miles.

The Ampera is described as anextended range electric vehicle andeventually it could use fuels such asbio-ethanol to power its engineinstead of petrol.

Bio-ethanol can be produced from

products such as wood pulp or anyorganic waste unlike oil-based fuelswhich drain the planet’s naturalresources.

The Ampera can run for almost40 miles purely on battery powerwhere it produces no emissions.

The high tech car is likely to gointo production next year.

Styleandsubstance

GIUGARIO and Bertoneare names usuallyassociated with exoticcar design. The Italianstylists are synonymous

with motoring style and panache.They are not names normally

associated with Vauxhall, althoughthe company has used Bertone,notably with its Astra coupe.

But you could be forgiven forthinking the Milanese maestroshave been sharpening their pencilswhen looking at the styling of theInsignia, because it really is thatgood.

A replacement for the Vectra,which itself recovered from earlystyling problems to become areliable, if slightly staid, favouritewith families and fleets, theInsignia moves up several levelsboth in terms of looks and quality.

It looks like a much moreexpensive car and even in basicform is a bit of a head turner.

Add the SRI trim and 4x4capability and you have a seriousperformance motor on your hands –at an attractive price.

It shares much with itspredecessor, good engines withdecent economy and bucketloads ofpracticality.

But it now has the sporty lookboth outside and inside.

The car has a low, feline look ofboth grace and power with astreamlined shape and coupe-likestyling.

That does come at a cost,however. The sloping shape meansthat windows are smaller andvisibility is lessened while thecoupe-like shape also means the caris less roomy in the rear.

The rest of interior matches theoutside with high quality fixturesand fittings that are both pleasingon the eye and practical. Stowagespace is excellent with a massiveboot and is even greater with thehatchback version.

Instrumentation is clear, conciseand easy to use and the quality andbuild is the best so far.

The car is also well equipped,even at entry level, but move up tothe SRi test model with its 4x4capability and it looks a realsporting thoroughbred, with neat18inch alloys. It performs like onetoo.

The two-litre 220PS engine isextremely lively with impressiveperformance. It rockets the car to

60mph from a standstill in just overseven seconds. The sportsuspension means the car is stableand has plenty of grip, particularlywhen cornering.

This gives a firm, but notuncomfortable ride, as the Vauxhallis a capable cruiser. The interior iswell cocooned from the sounds ofthe outside world with wind androad noise at a minimum while theengine is quiet unless under hardacceleration, when a sweet exhaust

sound kicks in.An excellent driver’s car that is

practical, fairly economical and funto drive, while still cheaper thanmost of its close rivals.

Standard equipment is good andthe car, with the extra bells andwhistles on the SRi, and all modelsboast a five-star Euro NCAP safetyrating.

The Insignia comes in Exclusiv, S,SE, SRi and Elite versions, withprices starting at just over £18,000.

Newcar sales slumpposes threat to used car stockTHE downturn in new car salesover recent years will have asignificant effect on the usedmarket this year and beyond,according to leading industryanalyst Glass’s Guide.

And the main cause forconcern among dealers will be amajor reduction in the supply of

one- and two-year-old used cars.“It was a situation that was

prevalent following the recessionof the early 1990s and it will berepeated over the next fewyears,” says Glass’s chief AdrianRushmore.

“When new car sales remaindepressed for a succession of

years the issue becomes moreacute, because future used carsupply reduces still further.”

Dealers will certainlyexperience more difficulty insourcing one- and two-year-oldcars this year compared withlast, as a result of the marked fallin registrations in 2009 and 2008.

“The saving grace is that thesupply of three- to five-year-oldcars will be fairly constant thisyear, thanks to new sales of 2.4min 2007, 2.3m in 2006, and 2.4min 2005.” adds Rushmore.

Used cars up to five years oldare the lifeblood of the dealertrade.
