Kraftchick, Lokuta, and Paddy attend Royal

Agricultural Fair in Toronto

On November 3rd, New Horizons members Kerrie Kraftchick, Karlie Lokuta and

Claudia Paddy, along with chaperones Heather and Scott Paddy, departed for a

weekend adventure to Toronto, Canada. The trip started with a relaxing train ride

from Windsor that took us right into downtown Toronto. Shopping was the

planned activity for the afternoon of day one, followed by a great meal at the Hard

Rock Café.

Day 2 tested our stamina as we took in 4 of Toronto’s popular tourist attractions.

Casa Loma (a must visit) was first on the list, followed by the Royal Ontario Muse-

um, Ripley’s Aquarium and finally the CN Tower. Everyone agreed that the aquari-

um was their favorite visit of the day.

The Royal Agricultural Fair was the plan for day 3. We scheduled our time at the

fair to coincide with events for Rabbit Agility (done by a local 4H club), Jack Russell

races, and a Super Dog exhibition. In between, we took in many other fair activi-

ties, including walking through the animal barns. The National Junior Beef Heifer

Confirmation Show was scheduled for this day, and we got a chance to talk with

4h’ers about their large animal projects. Once we were done visiting the fair, we

had reservations for Medieval Times where we got to eat a meal with only our

Photos and story provided by the Paddy Family

Are you a parent who may be interested in stating a new 4-H club? Are you a current leader who may be struggling to

grow? Maybe you are overwhelmed with the expectations and need to get fresh ideas to inspire your members!

Please join us in a workshop to introduce ideas, inspiration, and innovation to your club! We will discuss and engage in

hands-on activities ways to create a club, get the most out of youth and adults, and fun activities to make 4-H more than

Fair!

State Awards

Members who are interested in being a part of the State Awards for 2017 need to

plan on attending a workshop to be held on December 7 at 6:30pm at the Exten-

sion Office.

Members will be given copies of the forms and guidelines. We will discuss poten-

tial areas they may be interested in and have some hands on experience as we

begin to work toward completion of the application.

Completed award forms will be due on February 1, 2017. Monroe County 4-H

members who will be 13 as of January 1, 2017 and have not reached their 20th

birthday before January 1, 2017 are eligible to apply.

Members who are 11 and 12 may compete for State Recognition in the Mark of

Excellence Essay Contest. Two 4-H members will be chosen from Monroe County

for this award. The criteria for this will also be discussed at the December

meeting.

ners and to our Mark of Excellence winners.

well on December 12 at 6:30pm. Those that are interested can join via computer

Mitten Tree The Holiday Season is quickly approaching, and that means we are again preparing to decorate the Mitten Tree. Pat Webb, Project Chairman will set the tree up on November 14th, in the lobby of the MSU Extension Office. We encourage all clubs, families and interested community Members to donate hats, scarves and mittens to decorate the tree.

Items must be dropped off to the MSU Extension Office no later than December 12th, as that is the day the tree comes down. The gifts will then be wrapped, and distributed to youth across the country.

This is a great community service project, one that is certainly needed. So please do your part, and help keep our kids warm this season.

IMPORTANT!!!! 4-H Financial Manuals NOW AVAILABLE!!

LEADERS!! Please make arrangements to pick up your club's copy of the NEW 4-H Financial Manual. It has detailed information about financial responsibility, MSU Extension and 4-H policies, and a variety of forms you will find useful as you conduct club business throughout the program year. If you are unable to stop at the office during normal business office hours to pick this book up, contact the office at 734-240-3170 to make other arrangements. Each club MUST have a copy of this manual.

Additionally, if you have not yet turned in your Annual Financial Summary Report, an annual required document, we ask that you get this turned in no later than December 16, 2016. Federal reports must be compiled and submitted and your promptness will ensure we stay compliant. Failure to turn in your forms by this date may result in club disbandment as you will be unable to operate as a tax-exempt entity under Michigan State University. Address any questions to the Extension Office.

Thank you for all you do as leaders, parents and members throughout the year. We are looking forward to another successful program!

A Very Special Event for Younger 4-H’ers

While Michigan 4-H Youth Development (http://msue.anr.msu.edu/topic/info/4_h) offers many educational opportunities for youth

of all ages, there is a special, award-winning workshop for younger 4-H'ers (aged 8 to 12).

What and Why

4-H Winterfest (http://msue.anr.msu.edu/events/4_h_winterfest_2)

At this event, participants will:

Spend two days learning new skills from experts in six different, action-packed sessions of their choice. Pro-

ject areas may include crafts, science and technology, dance movement, shooting sports, healthy living, animal science and

international education. Through such 4-H projects, young people enjoy hands-on activities, while developing life skills (http://

bit.ly/1PVDmlX). For example, by allowing 4-H’ers to choose the sessions in which they want to participate, they learn decision

-making skills and independence. At 4-H Winterfest, youth also learn communication, cooperation and teamwork. All in all,

participants learn to make “the best (themselves) better.”

Experience some outdoor activities such as cross-country skiing, outdoor cooking, tubing, snowshoeing and possibly hiking in

the woods along the trails

Enjoy an overnight workshop experience
