Sustainable and organic at its best!These decorative seed pods are commonly known as “Monkey Balls”. They grow on semi-decidious trees from the Strynchos family in South Africa.

The healing properties of those fruits are traditionally put to use in remedies for fever and inflammation, also known to contain active ingredients against snakebite, its oils favoured in the cosmetic industry.

With a permit from the Department of Environmental Affairs, the pods are gathered by villagers in rural areas who sell them to a processing facility where the fruit is dried, skinned, sanded and polished.

At the same time, seeds are collected and seedlings are being re-intruduced to ensure harvesting and to renew the number of trees in nature. The harvesting of the seeds protects the trees from being cut for firewood, while at the same time creating a source of income for the rural community.
