N Chanson d'Amour werd reeds in 1958 geschreven door Wayne Shanklin, maar kreeg de meeste bekendheid in de versie van het Amerikaanse kwartet Manhattan Transfer, dat ook nummers als Th at Cat is High, Four brothers en Tava Tive in een close harmony jasje stak. Deze stijl vormde dan ook het uitgangspunt voor deze bewerking, met hier en daar een vleugje van de Glenn Miller-Sound. Gearrangeerd door meester componist en arrangeur Johan de Meij.

E Chanson d'Amour was written by Wayne Shanklin in 1958, gaining fame principally through the version by the American Quartet Manhattan Transfer, who also produced in Close-Harmony style such numbers as Th at Cat is High, Four brothers and Tava Tive. Th is style is the point of departure for this arrangement too, with here and there a touch of the Glenn Miller sound.

Manfred Schneider maakte een leuk arrangement voor harmonieorkest waarin hij de succes-songs Fantasy, I'll Write A Song For You en Boogie Wonderland verwerkte.

E Th e American soul music group Earth, Wind and Fire, set up in 1970 by singer and drummer Maurice Whitney, started a real international career from 1975 onwards. Especially the brass players were focused at the spectacular shows which brought a fusion of jazz and funk music. Manfred Schneider made a thrilling arrangement for symphonic band using the success songs Fantasy, I'll Write A Song For You and Boogie Wonderland.

N Music to Watch Girls By is de eerste top 40 hit van Bob Crewe met zijn groep Th e Bob Crew Generation. Hij had de melodie (gecomponeerd door Sidney Ramin) gehoord in een reclame voor Pepsi Light. In de originele instrumentale versie hebben de trompet en saxofoon een hoofdrol. Later heeft Andy Williams hier een vocaal nummer van gemaakt. Dit nummer is een lekkere afsluiter voor uw concert waarbij u het publiek zingend naar huis laat gaan met een lekkere oorwurm van een melodie.

E Music to Watch Girls By was the fi rst top 40 hit from Bob Crewe with his band, Th e Bob Crewe Generation. He had heard the melody (composed by Sidney Ramin) in a commercial for Pepsi Light. Th e original instrumental version featured the trumpet and saxophone, but later Andy Williams turned it into a vocal number. Th is piece is a great concert closer, which will have your audience singing all the way home with this pretty melody ringing in their ears.

Mr. de Meij was not prepared for any cheap compromise in his arrangement, and so the inventiveness of John Williams has been adhered to with the result that a certain degree of musicianship and technique is called for. N Het thema uit de western Midnight Cowboy gecomponeerd door John Barry, geniet alom bekendheid in de versie voor mondharmonica. In de bewerking voor harmonie en fanfare koos arrangeur Johan de Meij voor een combinatie van altsax- en trompetsolo met orkestbegeleiding. De solisten spelen het thema unisono of tweestemmig en ze wisselen elkaar daarbij af als een soort Duo Concertante waarbij de één het thema speelt dat dan door de ander omspeeld wordt. Het orkest heeft een overwegend begeleidende rol.

E Th e theme from the Western Midnight Cowboy composed by John Barry is widely known in the version for mouth-organ. In this arrangement for symphonic windband and fanfare orchestra arranger Johan de Meij has chosen for a combined solo for alto-sax and trumpet with an orchestral background. Th e two soloists play the theme which is emellished by the other. Th e orchestra mainly fi nds its task in the accompaniment.

In der Bearbeitung für Harmonie und Fanfare wählte der Arrangeur Johan de Meij eine Kombination von Altsaxophon- und Trompetensolo mit Orchesterbegeleitung. Die beiden Solisten spielen das Th ema unisono oder zweistimmig und wechseln sich dabei ab eine Art Duo Concertante wobei einer das Th ema spielt, das vom andern umspielt wird. Das Orchester erfühlt eine uberwiegend begeleitende Rolle.

Het idee van de componist was om enkele minder populaire Ierse melodieën te gebruiken en zo goed mogelijk een Ierse pub-sfeer te creëren. In dit stuk zorgen Bodhran drum, zang en fi ddle-achtige delen voor een levendige en authentieke sfeer. Hey!!

E Around the Whiskey Jar is a Medley based on 5 traditional Irish tunes (Star of the County down, She moved through the fair, Maurice Manley’s Polka, Down by the Salley Gardens, What should we do with the drunken Sailor). Th e idea of the composer was to feature some not that popular Irish melodies and to recreate, as much as possible, an Irish Tavern atmosphere. Bodhran drum, Singing parts and Fiddle-like sections are featured in this piece to make the ambiance lively, genuine and wild. Hey !!

N In deze Fantasie compositie ontwikkelt het orkest zich vanuit de fl uitcadens via een hobosolo, een slow blues voor het hout, een bigband passage en een tango tot een uitbundig swing orkest. Binnen de compositie is een solistische rol weggelegd voor een dixieland orkest welke in de orkestpartijen is genoteerd. Obligate improvisaties maken deze schitterende instrumentatie tot een waar feest.

E In this fantasy, the band develops itself starting from a fl ute cadenza and an oboe solo and then develops through a slow blues in the woodwinds, a big band passage and a tango into a sparkling swing band. Th e score contains a solo passage for a Dixieland band noted in all parts. Some obbligato improvisations help the splendid orchestration to make a thrilling experience of this piece.

D In dieser Fantasie entwickelt sich das Orchester aus einer Flötenkadenz, über einem Oboe Solo, einem langsamen Blues für die Holzbläser, einer Big Band Passage und einem Tango bis zu einem Swingorchester. Es gibt auch eine Dixieland Band und diese Noten fi ndet man in den unterschiedlichen Parteien. Obligatorische Improvisationen machen dieses herrlich Orchestrierte Werk zu einem wahrhaften musikalischen Fest.

F Cette fantaisie comprend successivement un solo de fl ûte, un solo de hautbois, un blues lent interprétés par les bois, un passage dans le style big band, un tango et fi nalement un morceau de véritable musique de swing. Il y a un rôle pour une petite formation dixieland qui est notée dans les parties instrumentales. Les improvisations indispensables donnent un caractère de fête à cette pièce merveilleusement orchestrée.

N De Zwitserse dirigent en componist Oscar Tschuor studeerde bij Luca Chresta in Chur en aan het Conservatorium van Zürich bij Ernst Lüthold maar was toch grotendeels autodidact. In 1943 stichtte hij het Jeugdharmonieorkest van Chur dat hij tot in 1956 dirigeerde. Hij bewerkte folkloristische wijsjes voor blaasorkest en schreef diverse mooie marsen, waaronder de bekende marsen San Carlo en Gruss von Hausen en deze pittige Arosa-Marsch opgedragen aan het gelijknamige stadje in het kanton Graubunden dat een vermaard wintersportoord is.

E Th e Swiss conductor and composer, Oscar Tschuor studied with Luca Chresta in Chur, and at the Conservatorium of Zurich with Ernst Lüthold, but was largely self taught. In 1943 he founded the Youth Wind Orchestra of Chur, which he directed until 1956. He arranged folk tunes for wind orchestra, and composed diverse and beautiful marches, including the famous San Carlo march, Grus von Hausen, and this lively Arosa March, which he dedicated to the town of the same name in the canton of Graubunden, which is a renowned ski resort.

N Johan Wichers, ook wel De Marsenkoning genoemd, was vanaf 1905 trompetter in het harmonieorkest in Nordhorn. Hoewel hij geen offi ciële muzikale scholing had genoten, wist hij zich tot een beroemde componist van marsmuziek op te werken. Vaak hadden zijn marsen een persoonlijke ervaring als achtergrond. Zo schreef hij de Mars der Medici als dank aan de medici die na een langdurig verblijf van hem in het ziekenhuis voor zijn herstel hadden gezorgd. Mars der Medici mag met recht een hit genoemd worden. Op YouTube werd hij in verschillende versies al honderdduizenden keren bekeken.

E Johan Wichers, who was also known as Th e March King, was a trumpeter in the band in Nordhorn from 1905. Although he had no formal musical training, he managed to become a famous composer of marches. His march compositions were often based on his personal experiences. He wrote the 'Mars der Medici' to thank the doctors who had cared from him during a long recovery in hospital. 'Mars der Medici' may even have the right to be called a 'hit'. On YouTube it has been played hundreds of thousands of times, in its many diff erent versions.

D Johan Wichers, den man gerne den Marschkönig nennt, wurde 1905 Trompeter im Blasorchester von Nordhorn. Obwohl er keine professionelle musikalische Ausbildung genossen hatte, wurde er zu einem berühmten Marschkomponisten. Seine Märsche entstanden oft aus persönlichen Erfahrungen heraus. So schrieb er den Marsch der Medici als Dank an die Ärzte, die nach einem langen Krankenhausaufenthalt für seine Genesung gesorgt hatten. Marsch der Medici kann man als einen Hit bezeichnen. Die verschiedenen Versionen

F Johan Wichers était dès 1905 trompettiste à l’harmonie de Nordhorn. Malgré l’absence d’éducation musicale professionnelle il est devenu célèbre plus tard comme compositeur de marches. Son surnom était Le Roi des Marches, il en a écrit plus de 70, dont Glück Auf et À mon Peuple. Souvent ses marches avaient une histoire personnelle comme départ, par exemple cette Marche des Médecins était écrit pour remercier ses docteurs qui l’avaient soigné pendant un séjour prolongé à l’hôpital.

N Eternal Promise is een bruiloftsmars, geschreven in 2013 voor het huwelijk van Wada’s vriendin Yuka en haar bruidegom Junya, dat plaats vond op 22 november 2013 in het bijzijn van hun zoon. Yuka was een klasgenote van Wada en speelde trompet. De première van het stuk werd uitgevoerd door oud-klasgenoten. Wada wenst het bruidspaar met dit stuk alle goeds voor hun toekomstige leven samen, en feliciteert hen van harte!

E Eternal Promise is a wedding march written in 2013. Naoya Wada wrote this march to commemorate the wedding of his friend Yuka and her bridegroom Junya, which took place on 22 November 2013 with their son. She was Wada’s college classmate and made a special study of trumpet. Th e premiere was performed by classmates. Th e composer send them both his best wishes for their lives together: Junya and Yuka, I congratulate you from the bottom of my heart!

D Eternal Promise ist ein Hochzeitsmarsch, geschrieben 2013 anlässlich der Heirat von Wadas Freundin Yuka und ihrem Bräutigam Junya am 22. November eben dieses Jahres. Yuka war Schulkameradin Wadas und spielte Trompete. Die Urauff ührung spielte ein Orchester aus lauter ehemaligen Klassenkameraden. Wada wünscht dem Brautpaar mit diesem Stück für das gemeinsame Leben alles Gute und gratuliert von Herzen.

F Eternal Promise est une marche nuptiale, écrite en 2013 pour le mariage d’une amie de Wada, Yuka, et son futur marié Junya. Le mariage avait lieu le 22 novembre 2013 en présence de leur fi ls. Yuka avait été une copine de classe de Wada, et jouait de la trompette. La première de la pièce était jouée par des anciens camarades de classe. Wada transmet avec cette pièce tous ses vœux de bonheur aux jeunes mariés !

N Days Remembered werd geschreven voor de High School band van Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Japan, ter gelegenheid van hun 30e jaarlijkse concert. In Japan begint het belastingjaar in april, studenten krijgen hun diploma in maart. De rector, Tetsuro Nakanishi, had daarom verzocht om een lyrisch stuk te componeren, geschikt voor dit soort ceremoniën. De première van Days Remembered was op 21 maart 2015 in de Yahata Citizen Hall en werd gedirigeerd door de rector.

E Days Remembered was written for the High School Band, located in Kitakyushu city, Fukuoka Japan, in celebration of 30th anniversary of their annual concert. Th e premiere was held on March 21, 2015 at the Yahata Citizen Hall conducted by Mr. Tetsuro Nakanishi, director. In Japan, fi scal year starts in April and ends in March; students graduate in March. So director requested Mr. Wada to compose lyrical piece which can be used at ceremony, such as graduation and entrance ceremonies.

D Days Remembered entstand für die High School Band von Kitakyushu in Fukuoka (Japan) anlässlich ihres 30. Jahreskonzerts. In Japan beginnt das Unterrichtsjahr im April und die Studenten erhalten ihre Zeugnisse im März. Rektor Tetsuro Nakanishi hat den Komponisten daher um ein lyrisches Stück gebeten, das gut zu einer solchen Veranstaltung passt. Die Premiere von Days Remembered fand am 21. März 2015 in der Yahata Citizen Hall statt. Nakanishi dirigierte selbst.

F Days Remembered était écrit pour l’orchestre du High School de Kitakyushu à Fukuoka, Japon, à l’occasion de leur 30ième concert annuel. Au Japon, l’année d’imposition commençant en avril, les étudiants obtiennent leur diplôme en mars. Le directeur de l’école, Tetsuro Nakanishi, avait demandé la composition d’une pièce lyrique pour ce genre d’occasions. N Dit 2-delige Concertino werd geschreven in opdracht van Oranje Minnertsga en is opgedragen aan Omar Tomasoni, solotrompettist van het Concertgebouw Orkest. In het 2e deel: Dancing Snow, ligt de nadruk op de virtuoze kant van het trompetspel, met een concertante wisselwerking tussen solist en orkest. Een aangepaste solopartij maakt dit Concertino ook bereikbaar voor de Flugelhorn.

E Winter Words was commissioned by the fanfare orchestra Oranje Minnertsga and is dedicated to Omar Tomasoni, principal trumpet with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Th e piece consists of 2 parts. Th e fi rst part Frozen Night, shows off the lyrical side of the trumpet. In the second part, Dancing Snow, the emphasis is more on virtuosic trumpet playing. Th ere is also an adapted solo part for fl ugelhorn available, making the solo playable for those players.

D Winter Words entstand im Auftrag des friesischen Fanfareorchesters Oranje aus Minnertsga und ist Omar Tomasoni gewidmet, Solotrompeter im Concertgebouw-Orchester Amsterdam. Die Komposition besteht aus zwei Teilen. Im ersten Teil Frozen Night steht die lyrische Seite des Trompetenspiels im Vordergrund. Im zweiten Teil Dancing Snow liegt der Schwerpunkt auf der virtuosen Seite des Trompetenspiels. Im Stimmensatz ist auch eine Solostimme für Flügelhorn vorhanden.

F Ce concertino en 2 mouvements était écrit pour Omar Tomasoni, trompette solo au Concertgebouw Orkest. Dans le premier mouvement, Frozen Night, le coté lyrique de la trompette est mis en valeur dans deux cadences. Dans le deuxième mouvement, Dancing Snow, l’accent est plus mis sur le coté virtuose, avec une alternance concertante entre soliste et orchestre. In this piece, the soloist has the opportunity to display virtually all aspects of contemporary fl ute performance: from the purely lyrical to the technically virtuoso level, all set off against the other colors of the modern wind orchestra.

Smith zu Ehren, komponiert. In diesem Stück bekommt der Solist ausführlich die Gelegenheit um alle Aspekte des gegenwärtigen Flötenspiels meisterhaft zu demonstrieren. Es gibt nicht nur den rein melodischen Aspekt sondern auch den virtuosen technischen Aspekt, mit den reichen Klangfarben des modernen Sinfonischen Blasorchesters im Hintergrund.

F Ce Divertimento Pour Flûte et Orchestre d'Harmonie a été composé à la demande du Band of Blue Club, une association d'anciens membres de l'orchestre d'harmonie de l'université Middle Tennesee, en hommage à Joseph T. Smith qui dirigea l'orchestre durant de nombreuses années. Dans ce pièce le soliste a amplement l'occasion de donner une démonstration virtuose de tous les aspects du jeu de fl ûte contemporain: l' aspect pure-ment mélodique d'une part, l'aspect virtuose de la technique d'autre part. Le tout se développe sur un fond composé des riches couleurs sonores de l'orchestre d'harmonie moderne.

N Songs of Liberation werd geschreven ter gelegenheid van de bevrijding van Nederland 70 jaar geleden in opdracht van de KMK/JWF onder leiding van Majoor Tijmen Botma. Het raamwerk wordt gevormd door drie Valeriusliederen, daterend uit de 16e eeuw. Hierin wordt het verzet tegen de Spaanse overheerser geschilderd. De Cantate start met donkere klanken, als symbool van onderdrukking, om in de fi nale plaats te maken voor de bevrijding van het licht, waar het met Gelukkig Is Het Land groots eindigt.

E Songs of Liberation was written to commemorate the liberation of the Netherlands 70 years ago commissioned by the KMK/JWF under the direction of Major Tijmen Botma. Th e piece consists of three Valerian songs, dating from the 16th century. Th e piece depicts the resistance against the Spanish Ruler. Th e Cantata begins with dark and sombre undertones symbolising oppression but then allowing the Finale to shine with the liberation of light, and then Gelukkig Is Het Land (Th e Happy Country) brings the piece to a rousing fi nish.

D Songs of Liberation entstand aus Anlass des 70. Jahrestages der Befreiung der Niederlande im Auftrag der Königlichen Militärkapelle Johan Willem Friso (Dirigent: Major Tijmen Botma). Eingerahmt wird das Stück von drei Valerius-Liedern aus dem 16. Jahrhundert. In ihnen wird der Widerstand gegen die spanischen Herrschaft beschrieben. Die Kantate beginnt mit dunklen Klängen, die die Unterdrückung symbolisieren, um im Finale Platz für Befreiung und Licht zu machen. Das Stück endet mit dem Lied Gelukkig Is Het Land (Glücklich ist das Land).

E Revival songs are sung more frequently these days in Christian churches in the Netherlands. Th e cheerful nature of these songs come into their own with use of a good catchy melody, everyday language, and often accompanied by a band with wind players, instead of an organ. In this collection: Together In the Name of Jesus, Th ank You For Th is New Morning, and Praise Him. Arranged for a fl exible setting, these are also well suited to a full orchestra.

D Erweckungslieder werden in niederländischen Kirchen immer häufi ger gesungen. Ihr fröhlicher Charakter zeigt sich in eingängigen Melodien, ihren Texten aus der Alltagssprache und ihrer Begleitung durch Band oder Bläsergruppen anstelle der Orgel. Bei den hier verwendeten Liedern handelt es sich um Zusammen im Namen Jesu, Danke für diesen neuen Morgen und Preist ihn, preist ihn. Das Arrangement ist für fl exible Besetzung, eignet sich aber auch für großes Orchester.

N Our Blue Planet, opgezet in de vorm van een klassieke ouverture, is een muzikale schildering van onze mooie, maar kwetsbare planeet. Een langzame, plechtige hymne (Adagio Religioso) bezingt de schoonheid van de aarde als vanuit de ruimte waargenomen. Een kort, versnellend motief, eerst door de hoorns ingezet en daarna door gans het orkest overgenomen, verschuift de focus veel dichterbij. In een aansluitend Allegro spirituoso maken we dan kennis met het vele leven en de drukke bedrijvigheid hier op aarde.

E Our Blue Planet, has been arranged in the form of a classic overture and is a musical portrait of our beautiful, but fragile planet. A slow solemn hymn (Andante religioso) sings about the beauty of the Earth as seen from space. A short accelerating motif, fi rst stated by the horns, and then taken over by the entire orchestra, shifts the focus much closer. During the closing Allegro Spiritoso, we learn about the vast amount of life and busy activity here on Earth.

D Unser blauer Planet, konzipiert in Form einer klassischen Ouvertüre, ist die musikalische Beschreibung unseres schönen, aber verletzlichen Planeten Erde. Eine langsame, feierliche Hymne (Adagio Religioso) besingt die Schönheit der Erde, so wie man sie aus dem Weltraum wahrnimmt. Mit einem kurzen, schnellen Motiv, zunächst in den Hörnern, dann nach und nach im ganzen Orchester erklingend, zoomt man musikalisch näher an die Erde heran. Un hymne lent et solennel (Adagio religioso) chante la beauté de la terre, vue de l’espace. Un court motif en accéléré, d’abord entamé par les cors et ensuite repris par l’orchestre entier, reporte la mise au point à beaucoup plus près. Dans l’Allegro spiritoso qui s’enchaine on fait connaissance avec les maintes formes de vie et l’aff airement ici sur la terre.

Uiteindelijk lukt het hem te vluchten, en na wat onuitputtelijke momenten kan hij zijn achtervolgers afschudden. Elke stap brengt hem dichter bij zijn familie, en aan het eind is daar de langverwachte hereniging met zijn geliefden.

E In Th e Escape Andreas Ludwig Schulte describes the fi ctive situation of a man in long-standing captivity. He is badly treated and his longing for his family becomes bigger from day to day. Finally, the fl ight succeeds and he can shake off his haunters after some indefatigable moments. Every step brings him closer to his family and so it comes to the long desired reunion with his loves.

D In Th e Escape beschreibt Andreas Ludwig Schulte die fi ktive Situation eines Mannes in langjähriger Gefangenschaft. Er wird schlecht behandelt und seine Sehnsucht nach seiner Familie wir von Tag zu Tag größer. Schließlich gelingt ihm die Flucht und er kann nach einigen rastlosen Momenten seine Verfolger abschütteln. Jeder Schritt bringt ihn seiner geliebten Familie näher und schließlich kommt es zum lange ersehnten Wiedersehen mit seinen Lieben.

N Epic Journey to Torshavne is een 4e divisie concoursstuk geschreven in opdracht van het Gouden Spikerfestival 2016. Het stuk begint met een thema in de trombones, dat aankondigt dat het eiland in zicht is. Dan zorgen de bassen voor verwachtingsvolle spanning, als het eiland geleidelijk opdoemt. Er volgt een levendige dans die dramatische beelden oproept van de eerste bewoners, en een kalmer stuk getiteld People of Torshavn. Een koperkoraal benadrukt uiteindelijk de schoonheid van het eiland.

E Epic Journey to Torshavne is a 4e division Test Piece commissioned by Gouden Spiker Festival 2016. Th e journey begins At Sea as trombones announce fi rst sighting of the island. A stirring theme in basses creates mystery and anticipation as the island gradually appears. A lively theme in 3/2 introduces Folk Dance & Celebration conjuring dramatic images of early settlers, followed by a calmer rendition entitled People of Torshavn. A brass chorale segues into Finale with a fast reprise and brass chords underscore the splendour of the island.

D Epic Journey to Torshavn ist ein Wettbewerbsstück für die Mittelstufe, komponiert im Auftrag des Gouden Spikerfestival 2016. Das Stück beginnt mit einem Th ema in den Posaunen, das für „Land in Sicht steht'. Danach erzeugen die Tuben eine erwartungsvolle Spannung, als die Insel nach und nach sichtbar wird. Es folgt ein lebendiger Tanz, der dramatische Momente aus dem Leben der ersten Inselbewohner in Erinnerung ruft, sowie ein ruhigerer Abschnitt mit dem Titel People of Torshavn. Ein Choral in den Blechbläsern veranschaulicht noch einmal die Schönheit der Insel (NB: Wer es noch nicht gewusst oder bis jetzt noch nicht gegoogelt hat: Torshavn ist die Hauptstadt der Färöer-Inseln. )

N De compositie Voice of the Vikings beschrijft de geschiedenis van de Vikingen, een noordelijk volk dat zich opmaakte om met kunstig uitgesneden schepen de wereld te veroveren. Natuurlijk waren ze ook berucht vanwege hun gruwelijke gevechten en wreedheid. De Vikingen hielden van de zee en geloofden dat ze na de dood met een schip naar het paradijs zouden varen. De thuiskomst van de zeelui werd altijd goed gevierd, er werden verhalen over de beleefde avonturen verteld en soms traden er zelfs acrobaten, jongleurs of clowns op.

E Th e composition Voice of the Vikings describes the history of the Vikings, a Norse folk that was planning on conquering the world in their artfully carved ships. And of course they were also notorious for gruesome fi ghting and cruelty. Th e Vikings loved the sea and believed that after death, they would sail in their ships to paradise. Th e homecoming of Viking sailors was always a big celebration, and many stories would be told about their adventures, which would often feature acrobats, jugglers and clowns.

D Die Komposition Voice of the Vikings beschreibt die Geschichte der Wikinger, einem nordischen Volk das sich mit ihren kunstvoll geschnitzten Schiff en aufmachte um die Welt zu erobern. Natürlich waren Sie auch durch ihre grauenvollen Kämpfe und Brutalität berüchtigt. Die Wikinger liebten das Meer und meinten auch, dass man nach dem Tod mit einem Schiff ins Paradies reisen würde. Nach der Heimkehr der Seeleute wurde aber auch viel gefeiert, es wurden Abenteuergeschichten erzählt und manchmal traten sogar Akrobaten, Jongleure oder Clowns auf. Spannung bis zur letzten Note!

F Le morceau Voice of the Vikings décrit l’histoire des Vikings, un peuple Nordique qui se préparait à conquérir le monde avec leurs navires joliment sculptés. Évidemment ils étaient aussi de notoriété sanguinaire. Les Vikings aimaient la mer, et croyaient qu’après la mort, on naviguait en bateau au paradis. Si toutefois les marins revenaient, on fêtait ça abondamment avec des conteurs, acrobates, jongleurs et clowns. Sensations fortes garanties !

Een klein gemeenschappelijk thema verbindt de verschillende muziekstijlen. Het werk is geschreven voor de 129e editie van de International Competition van Valencia.

E Th is Symphonic Poem was dedicated to the Musical Union El Xúquer from Sumacàrcer and its conductor, Josep Ros. Th e work is inspired by the people from Sumacàrcer trying to tell the diff erent characteristic things that identify it: its people, its festivals, the Xúquer river, the Penya-Roja castle, its orange groves and streets. We can fi nd diff erent languages throughout the work to narrate it, all of them are related to each others by a small generator motive about all the musical idea. Th e work has been written to take part in the 129th edition of the International Competition of Valencia.

At fi rst he is greatly impressed by the magic of the country, but soon faces setbacks and a growing sense of disenchantment. Exhaustion and personal failure bring the adventurer to the brink of despair until fi nally a glimmer in the dust rewards him for his perseverance.

D Ein junger Europäer des 19. Jahrhunderts ist fasziniert von der Schönheit des Saphirs, einem Edelstein, der in Indien und auf Sri Lanka gefunden werden kann. Der Abenteurer reist in das fernöstliche Land und ist beeindruckt von dessen fremder Magie. Voll Tatendrang wird die Suche nach dem Saphir begonnen, eine gefährliche, mühsame und ernüchternde Arbeit. Erschöpfung und Fehlschläge bringen den Abenteurer an den Rand der Verzweifl ung, bis endlich ein Glimmern in der staubigen Erde alle Mühe belohnt.

F Un jeune Européen du 19ième siècle est fasciné par la beauté du saphir, que l’on trouve en Inde et au Sri Lanka. Plein d’ambition il part pour l’Asie du sud, à la recherche de la gemme. Au début il est émerveillé par le pays, mais très vite il se heurte à une déception et un désenchantement grandissants. L’épuisement et l’échec personnel le désespèrent, mais fi nalement un scintillement dans la poussière le récompense pour sa persévérance.

N Deze vierdelige suite werd in opdracht geschreven in 1998 voor een korte fi m, gemaakt door een paar jonge Londense fi lmmakers. Het bizarre, eigenzinnige en komische onderwerp van hun fi lm over een oudere ondernemerstweeling vroeg om levendige, cartooneske muziek. De muziek is op zichzelf sterk genoeg om ook buiten de fi lm gespeeld te worden door gevorderde orkesten en bands die van fi lmmuziek houden. De suite bevat enkele solo’s voor hout, koper en percussie en een pakkend hoofdthema.

E Andrew Pearce was commissioned to score a short fi lm for some student fi lmmakers in London. Th e quirky, bizarre and comedic subject of their fi lm (featuring a pair of elderly and enterprising twin brothers) required a lively and cartoon-like score to match their performances. Pearce felt the music was strong enough to be revised and released beyond the fi lm. Th is suite of selected music cues should appeal to more advanced ensembles featuring solo winds, brass and percussion. Th e suite is book-ended by the memorable main title theme.

D Diese vierteilige Suite entstand für einen Streifen, der 1998 von jungen Londoner Filmemachern produziert wurde. Der bizarre und komische Film über einen älteren Unternehmer verlangte eine lebendige, cartooneske Musik. Sie ist so gut geworden, dass sie auch ohne die bewegten Bilder gespielt werden kann, und zwar von fortgeschrittenen Orchestern, die gerne Filmmusik spielen. Neben dem packenden Hauptthema sind Soli in allen Registern vorhanden.

F Cette suite en 4 mouvements était commandée en 1998 pour un court-métrage fait par des jeunes cinéastes Londoniens. Le sujet bizarre et drôle de leur fi lm, parlant des jumeaux entrepreneurs d’un certain âge, demandait une musique vivace et cartoonesque. La Suite peut très bien être jouée en dehors du fi lm par des orchestres et bands avancés qui ont une affi nité avec la musique de fi lm. Elle contient quelques solos pour bois, cuivres et percussions, et un thème principal captivant.

N Dit werk bestaat uit drie verschillende delen, zoals de titel al aangeeft. Na een zeer energieke introductie komt er een melodieuze mars met een eveneens zeer melodieuze en vrolijke euphonium solo. Na een korte overgang volgt de lyrische en opwindende Romance die eindigt in een dialoog tussen solo-hoorn en –euphonium. Plotseling volgt dan de apotheose in de vorm van de Finale, met een duidelijke nadruk op het koper. Een werk met een simpele structuur en een geweldig klankresultaat.

E Th is work as the title indicates, is composed of three diff erent sections. After an introduction of great energy appears a quite melodious March that has within it an euphonium solo, itself also very melodic and exhilarating. Following a brief transition arises Romance, lyrical and exciting, fi nalized by a horn and euphonium solo in dialogue. Suddenly, without warning, arises the apotheosis of the Finale placing clear highlight on the metals. A work of simple structure with a magnifi cent sound result.

D Wie aus dem Titel zu erkennen ist, besteht das Werk aus drei verschiedenen Teilen. Nach einer sehr energischen Introduktion erklingt ein melodiöser Marsch mit einem fröhlichen Solo des Euphoniums. Nach einem kurzen Zwischenspiel folgt eine lyrische und erregende Romanze, die mit einem Dialog zwischen Solo-Horn und Euphonium endet. Unvermittelt schließt sich das Finale an, in dem das Blech dominiert. Das Werk hat zwar eine einfache Form, liefert aber ein prächtiges klagliches Ergebnis.

E Heroes of the Air (Bravos do Ar) is a musical work that was written to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Military Aviation in Portugal. It was premiered on May 14, 2014 at the opening ceremony for the occasion of the inauguration of the evocative monument at Air Base n. 1, Sintra. Th e author imbued by the spirit of the pioneers of Portuguese aviation, builds this work with elements where the bravery, courage, and perseverance mark the character of this festive fanfare.

D Heroes of the Air (Helden der Luft) entstand anlässlich der Feierlichkeiten zum 100jährigen Bestehen der portugiesischen Luftwaff e. Die Urauff ührung war am 14. Mai 2014 im Rahen der Eröff nung eines Denkmals auf dem ersten Luftwaff enstützpunkt in Sintra. Beim Schreiben dieser festlichen Fanfare hat sich der Komponist vom Mut und der Ausdauer der Pioniere der portugiesischen Luftfahrt inspirieren lassen.

De kopersectie presenteert in dit stuk de thema’s, terwijl de houtblazers de verfi jningen aanbrengen. De beginfanfare en het koraal kondigen het nieuwe leven aan en bezingen het. Hoewel het een ouverture is met een duidelijk en levendig ritme, is er ook plek voor kalmere, meer melodische en intieme momenten. E Th e idea of composing an original piece for band, appeared at the birth of the composers daughter. In this piece the brass section takes a leading role with introducing the themes while the woodwinds have the role of enhancing and adding to them with a subtle intervention. Th e initial fanfare foretells the birth of a new life whereas the choral is a hymn to life. Despite being an overture, where the rhythm is quite precise and vibrant, there is also room for more melodic and intimate moments. At the end, some of the themes heard earlier reappear, thus closing the circle.

D Durch die Geburt seiner Tochter ist der Komponist Rui Claro zu diesem originellen Stück angeregt worden. Die Th emen werden in diesem Stück zunächst von den Blechbläsern präsentiert, während die musikalische Ausarbeitung von den Holzbläsern übernommen wird. Die Einleitungsfanfare und ein Choral kündigen das neue Leben an und besingen es. Auch wenn es sich hier um eine Ouvertüre mit einem prägnanten und lebendigen Rhythmus handelt, ist auch Raum für ruhigere, eher melodische und intime Momente, Die Wiederholung des Eingangsthemas am Ende sorgt für thematische Geschlossenheit.

F L’idée d’écrire une pièce originale pour harmonie est née pendant la naissance de la fi lle du compositeur. La section de cuivres présente ici les thèmes, pendant que les bois ajoutent le raffi nement. La fanfare initiale et la chorale annoncent la nouvelle vie et en chantent la louange. Malgré le rythme vivace et prononcé de l’ouverture, il y a aussi des moments plus calmes, mélodieux et intimes. À la fi n, les thèmes du début reviennent et referment le cercle.

N Dit is het vierde deel uit de suite in d-klein (HWV 437) voor solo-klavecimbel. Het werk kreeg grote bekendheid door het instrumentale gebruik in de fi lm Barry Lyndon van Stanley Kubrick uit 1975. Ook Brian De Palma gebruikte dit deel voor de fi lm Redacted uit 2007. Het is een prachtig barok werk dat bij een plechtige gelegenheid goed tot zijn recht komt. Door de wisselingen tussen mineur en majeur is dit ook een mooi inspeelwerk.

E Th is is the fourth movement from the suite in D minor (HWV 437) for solo harpsichord. Th is work became widely known from it’s prominent use in Stanley Kubrick’s 1975 fi lm Barry Lyndon. Brian de Palma also used it in his fi lm Redacted in 2007. Th is beautiful baroque work well suited to solemn occasions. With modulations between major and minor this is a very suitable introduction work.

D Dies ist der vierte Satz aus der Suite d-Mol (HWV 437) für Cembalo. Äußerst bekannt wurde das Stück durch seinen Einsatz in Stanley Kubricks Film Barry Lyndon aus dem Jahr 1975. Auch Brian de Palma nutzte die Musik 2007 in seinem Kriegsfi lm Redacted. Es ist ein herrliches Stück Barockmusik, das sich gut für den Einsatz bei festlichen Anlässen eignet. N Funeral March of a Marionete is geschreven in 1872 als onderdeel van de Charles Gounod’s Suite Burlesque voor piano. Deze suite was bedoeld als parodie op Henry Chorley, een muziek-criticus. Toen het stuk af was behield Gounod alleen deze treurmars. Deze mars is talloze keren opgenomen waarvan een van de eerste door John Phillip Sousa. Het werk is waarschijnlijk het meest bekend geworden als themamuziek bij het televisieprogramma Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

E Funeral March of a Marionette was composed in 1872 as part of Charles Gonoud’s Suite Burlesque for piano. Th is suite was intended as a parody of the music critic, Henry Chorley. When he had fi nished composing the piece, Gonoud decided to keep only the funeral march. Th is march has been recorded countless times, one of the fi rst being with John Philip Sousa’s famous band. Th e piece is most well known from its use as the theme music to the television program Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

N Adolphe verdiende de kost als muziekrecensent en componist, alhoewel hij zelf zijn componeren als een vorm van tijdverdrijf bestempelde. Het bekendst is hij door zijn balletten, waarvoor hij zijn inspiratie verkreeg door oplettend naar de benen van de jonge danseressen te kijken. Zijn komische opera La Poupée de Nuremberg was een enorm succes in het Parijs van de 19e eeuw. De prachtige overture is een hoogtepunt van de Franse operaliteratuur, en een aanwinst in het programma voor ieder orkest.

E Adolphe Adam earned his living as a music critic and a composer, though he himself considered composing as mere pastime. He is still famous because of his ballet music and he was said to fi nd his inspiration while looking attentively at the young female dancers’ legs. His comic opera La Poupée de Nuremberg was most successful in Paris in the nineteenth century. Th e splendid overture is a highlight of the French opera and a real asset for any orchestra.

D Adolphe Adam verdiente sich den Lebensunterhalt als Musikrezensent und Komponist, obwohl er selbst das Komponieren als Zeitvertrieb bezeichnete. Er ist heute noch immer meist bekannt für seine Ballettmusik für welche er Inspiration erhielt durch sich aufmerksam die Beine der jungen Tänzerinnen anzuschauen. Die prächtige Ouvertüre von La Poupée de Nuremberg ist ein Höhepunkt der französischen Opernliteratur und eine gewisse Neuerwerbung für das Repertoire Ihres Orchesters.

Il était surtout connu par ses ballets, pour lesquels il obtenait son inspiration en regardant les jambes des danseuses. N Feste Romane is een symphonisch gedicht geschreven in 1928 en het derde orkestrale werk uit zijn Roman Trilogy. Elk van de vier delen beschrijft een tafereel uit het antieke Rome. Het eerste deel (Cirenses) verbeeld een gevecht van gladiatoren. Deel twee beschrijft een terugkerend festival waar pelgrims de stad naderen met op de achtergrond het klok-gelui. Het derde deel viert het oogstfeest en het laatste deel (La Befana) beeld het grote stadsfeest uit op de Pizza Navona.

E Roman Festivals is a symphonic poem composed in 1928, and the third orchestral work from Respighi’s Roman Trilogy. Each of the four movements describes a scene from ancient Rome. Th e fi rst movement, Circenses (Circuses), depicts a battle of gladiators. Th e second movement, Giubilio (Jubilee) portrays an every-fi ftieth-year festival where pilgrims approaching Rome, catch a breath-taking view from the mountain, as church bells ring in the background. Next is L'Ottorbrata (October Festival) representing the harvest festival, and fi nally La Befana (Th e Epiphany) depicts the big city festival on the Pizza Navona.

D Das 1928 komponierte sinfonische Gedicht Römische Feste bildet den Abschluss von Ottorino Respighis Römischer Trilogie. Jeder der vier Teile beschreibt eine Szene aus dem antiken Rom. Der erste Teil Circenses stellt einen Gladiatorenkampf dar. Teil 2 zeigt eine religiöse Feier: Pilger kehren in die Stadt zurück und man hört Glockengeläut im Hintergrund. Im dritten Teil wohnen wir einer musikalischen Schilderung des Osterfests bei und das Finale (La Befana) beschreibt das große Stadtfest auf der Piazza Navona.

N Deze kerstfantasie is gebaseerd op een aantal relatief onbekende kerstliederen. Naast een drietal Engelse Christmas Carols is in deze compositie ook een fragment uit het Gregoriaans, een Maria antifoon (Salve Regina), en een Russisch kerstlied (Carol of the Bells) opgenomen. Karakteristiek voor dit laatste lied is het herhalende motiefj e dat symbool staat voor het klokkengebeier. E Th e Christmas fantasy Hymns and Carols is based on a number of relatively unknown carols. Alongside three English Christmas carols, this composition includes a fragment of a Gregorian chant, a Marian antiphon (Salve Regina), and a Russian Carol. A characteristic feature of this last song is the recurring motif that symbolises the bells chiming to welcome in the New Year. Th e English carols represent the more lyrical part of this fantasy. Th e piece has a majestic ending, which returns to the aforementioned Salve Regina, a hymn to the Virgin Mary.

D Die Weihnachtsfantasie Hymns and Carols basiert auf einigen eher unbekannten Weihnachtsliedern: drei englische Carols, ein Fragment aus dem gregorianischen Antiphon Salve regina und ein russisches Weihnachtslied. Charakteristisch für dieses letzte Lied ist ein sich stets wiederholendes Motiv, das das Glockengeläut darstellen soll. Die englischen Lieder haben einen eher verhaltenen Charakter. In Stimmführung und Harmonisierung sind die Lieder etwas außergewöhnlich gestaltet. Das Stück endet majestätisch - unter Rückgriff auf den der heiligen Maria gewidmeten Hymnus Salve regina.

And not only the musicians but also the audiance were much pleased with the fi ne melodies and the beautiful timbre. Th e New Baroque Suite consist of 3 parts: Overture, Air and Fugueing Tune.

Th e maiden voyage of the airship was in March 1936, but on May 6, 1937 it was destroyed during landing in Lakehurst New Jersey (America), when the hydrogen fi lling caught fi re. 36 people including a member of the landing party lost their lives. Th ere are various theories about how this accident might have occurred.

Een uitdaging voor elk orkest

E Cassiopeia was the wife of Cepheus, the Ethiopian king of Joppa (now known as Jaff a, in Israel), and the mother of Andromeda. Th e queen was both beautiful and vain, and the story of how her vanity caused great distress is told in relation to the constellation Andromeda. A great Symphonic Poem.

D Cassiopeia war die Gattin von Cepheus, dem Ethiopischen König von Joppa (dem gegenwärtigen Jaff a in Israel), und die Mutter von Andromeda. Die Königin war nicht nur sehr schön sondern auch sehr eitel und die Geschichte wie ihre Eitelkeit großes Ungluck verursachte verbindet man mit der Konstellation Andromeda. Ein schönes Symphonisch gedicht.
