Crosshaven  AFC  is  ofcourse  the  oldest

Football  club  in  Cork. The  first  AGM  ofCrosshaven  AFC  tookplace  in  1898  with  thefounding  members  allBritish  Army  soldiersbased  in  Fort  Camdenliterally  100  yards  fromwhere  the  club  play today. The club has  a long & celebrated honours list ,the first club to  win the  AOH Cup, the Munster  Youths Cup twice,  AUL/MSL titles &  more  recentlySchoolboys/Ladies  &Schoolgirls  titles.

Club Overview

Crosshaven  has  also produced  countless  players who  have  gone  on  to represent  Ireland  at different  levels,  play  LOI, play  for  Munster  &  Cork but  more  importantly  we have  produced  countless players  who  play  for  the love  of  the  game.

Every  sporting  club in  the  country  rely

heavily   on   the goodwill  &  support  of  so   many   people.Volunteerism  in  sport

is  no  mean  task  & extraordinary  dedication is  required.  Crosshaven AFC  is  no  different and  we  are  grateful  to  have   so   many wonderfully  dedicated people  involved  in  our club.  This  amazing dedication  to  clubs  & sporting  organisations has  been  the  hallmark of Crosshaven for many

years  &  it  was  no surprise  in  2006  that the  census  showed that  Crosshaven  was number  1  in  the country  for  people being  involved  in voluntary clubs/organisations.

Club Legend Bobby Tambling

Former Chelsea and CorkCeltic star Bobby Tambling

Senior team Coacha lot of skills throughout his career which haveadded greatly to his coaching skills. “I’ve been veryfortunate to be heavily involved in the training ofpersonnel within the Naval Service and feel that ithas made me far better coach”. Jamie commentedon the club’s recent run of good form and paidtribute to their latest edition Denis Behan, formerCork & U21 Republic of Ireland international.“Denis has been outstanding for us in fulfilling hisrole as a player/coach. He’s scored four goals inour last four games and has really been thedifference between wining and loosing on more thanone occasion. As a coach he conducts himself withthe utmost professionalism”.Jamie discussed someof the upcoming fixtures over the Xmas & NewYear period. “This is always a tricky period for us.The combination of difficult away fixtures andplayers being away for the holiday season meanswe need 100% commitment from the squadavailable to us”.

Lady’s team CaptainMelissa Murphy, Lady’s Team Captain with

Crosshaven AFC talks about the upcomingfixture against UCC “UCC are a quality Teamwith an excellent coaching setup”Melissa talksabout previous fixtures and the great rivalrybetween Crosshaven and UCC “We have beenvery unlucky against them in recent fixtures anddespite our best efforts in the last few games, wejust lacked that clinical edge that to put themaway. UCC are our biggest rivals in Munster, soevery match is like a Final against them”. Melissatalks about what she believes is the key to theirsuccess “the sheer professionalism and self beliefthat they bring to every game is just incredible. We feel like we can match them in terms of skilland physicality but need to adopt some of that selfbelief/ confidence to have that clinical edge andsuccess over them”. Melissa recently completed aNutrition & Health Coaching Course with theIrish Institute of Nutrition and Health & talksabout her new role as Nutrition Coach with theClub “Having gained so much from the club overthe years its great to be able to give something

For  approximately  two  years  now   the development

committee   have been   indiscussions   with   Cork County Council, namely  Noel O’Driscoll &  more recently  Richard Keating trying  to secure  roughly  7 meters of  land  just outside  our boundary. There  are  two  main reasons  why Crosshaven AFC requires  this  land.

1. Following   a successful planning  application  to  extend

our existing  clubhouse, one  of  thestipulations   for planning to begranted was   that   our   currententrance  on  the  Camden  Road  was to   be   closed   off.   This necessitated the  club  in  looking for  an alternative  entrance  from the Council  Car  Park  side  of  ourgrounds.  Vehicular  access  to  ourgrounds  is  vital  for  emergencyservices  &  also  to  enable  the  clubto  carry  out  pitch  maintenance  &for  future  developments.

2. Following   the   dramatic  increase   in   population   of

Crosshaven  (25%  between  2006 -2011  –  ref  CSO),  the  surroundingbays  &  neighbouring  towns  theclub  has  grown  considerably  in the past  six to seven  years  andcurrently   caters   for   over 300members.  The  clubs  all weatherplaying  pitch  was  built  12  yearsago  &  at  that  time,  CrosshavenAFC had  six  teams.  The  current all weather  pitch  at  40m  x  30m is  a  7  a  side  pitch.  For   the 2013/2014  season,  Crosshaven AFC  has  12  underage  teams  &  3 Adult  teams.  The  club  also  caters  for   U5/U6’s   on   Saturday

mornings. Numerous   localgroups also   use   the   allweather pitch to keep  fit. Twoschool   hockey & footballteams  from  both  Scoil Bride& Colaiste  Muire also use it.Crosshaven  AFC  approachedthe  council  to  use  the club’sland   &   7   meters   of   thecouncil’s land to  enable  us  toextend the  all weather  playingsurface  to 40m  x  50m.  Newlighting would  be  added  & the

playing   surface  upgraded  at a  cost  of roughly  €125k  to the  club. Planning  for  this project  is currently  sought .

This  venture would  double the  clubs training  capacity.

The  club has applied  for funding  for this project  via the  Sports Capital  Grants.

During  initial   meetings Crosshaven  GAA were

also  involved  as  they claimedthat  they  owned the groundapproximately 30  meters  fromtheir clubhouse.   This   wasinvestigated by  the  council  &discovered to be incorrect.

It was then discovered that the  land  that the GAA  club had  claimed  to  own did  not encroach  the  area  thatCrosshaven GAA wished to extend  the  all weather playing  pitch  &  place  the proposed  new  entrance.

It   is   important   to remember that  Crosshaven

AFC  have been  based  in Camden  for nearly  30  years now  and continue to provide a  much  needed sporting  &  social   outlet   for our members.  Crosshaven itself is  a  very  sporting village  &  competition   for theallegiance  of  youngsters  isintense.   Therefore   it   isextremely  important  that  themanagement  committee  ofCrosshaven  AFC  continue tostay  ahead  of  the  game  bycontinuously focusing on  the big picture. The committeewill continue to ensure  thatthe club  is the best that it canbe for  the  next  generationswhile  also  focusing on  theproblems  of  the  present.

The  further  development  of the  all  weather  training  area is  vital  in  order  to  give  players   enough   training  time   to   allow   them   todevelop   as   people   & players.  It will also assist thecommittee  with dealing withthe logistical difficulties of trying  to  arrange  who  trains when  &  where.

It was a mixed weekend for Crosshaventeams with 2 wins & 2 defeats

recorded. The weekend started off wellwith the U11's away to Fermoy in whatturned out to be a bruising battle inmidfield. Crosshaven took the lead on 24minutes when Ethan Berkery Kelly turnedhis marker on the half way line beforesprinting through on goal & rifling a shotinto the net. Crosshaven were strugglingto retain the lead & as the gameprogressed, Fermoy finally got theequaliser they deserved. Crosshaventhough were not to be denied the threepoints & in the final minute Zach Murphylaid off to Christian Byrne at the edge ofthe area. Chris stepped inside his manbefore

hitting the winner into the top corner. TheU11's sit top of the table for the Xmasperiod.

The U13's meanwhile were away toEverton & had a rough morning going

down on a 5-1 scoreline. The Senior teamfaced league leaders Casement on Saturdayafternoon & were unlucky not to claim atleast a point. The game finished 2-1 toCasement but the young Crosshaven sidematched them all the way.The U19's continued their fine run of formwith a 3-0 win over Killumney in Camdenon Sunday. Warm-up Routines

We often find that there is someconfusion as to what constitutes a

proper warm up. For example, somecoaches are still using static stretching toget athletes loose before practices andcompetitions. Unfortunately, thisoutdated method actually reduces speedand power.

How often during a practice or soccermatch does an athlete hold a stretch

position as part of their sport? That isright, not very often.

Sample Routine:

High knee walk - x10 each leg Jog 50 yards Lateral lunge walk (both legs) x10

each leg Jog 50 yards Front leg swings - x10 each leg Jog 50 yards Lateral Leg Swings - x 10 each

leg Jog 50 yards Iron Cross - x 10 each leg Jog 50 yards Scorpion - x 10 each leg Jog 50 yards Backwards Run - 2 x 30 yards 'A' Skip - 3x15 yards 'A' Run - 2x20 yards Fast Leg - 2x30 yards (each leg) Accelerations - 4 x 40 yards

Plyometric Training

Plyometric exercise is when you useexplosive, fast-acting movements to

develop muscular power and improveoverall speed. In other words, it’s anexercise that allows muscles to exertmaximum force in the shortest amount oftime possible.

Sample Routine:

Run up the stairs in a stadium. Agility ladder training. Place feet together - and hop side to the side

and then forward and then backwards. Standing long jump – Use this for height.

See how far you can jump! Jump over a ball on one foot - alternating

with your left and right feet. Then try jumpingover the ball from front to back. Hurdle Hopping – Jump forward and

backward over a hurdle Bounding – This is when you take long

strides while running. Jumping with two legswill reduce the impact when landing, andbounding up stairs is helpful to develop boththe vertical and forward jump. Hold Drills/Hop and Hold – Same as

bounding but in between bounds do a littlehop. For example, you want to bound, thenstop and then do a quick hop. Then boundagain, then another hop. Box Jumps –Typically, you use two feet,

especially for higher elevations, but morerigorous sessions can be done with a smallerbox and both feet. Down Jumps/Depth Jumps – While

standing on a platform, jump down. Butduring the descent of the jump, prepareyourself for an immediate jump upwardsagain. Tuck Jumps – All you do is pull your legs up

into your body while jumping. Various sprints - To work on diverse groups

of muscles – slalom, zigzag, weaves, cuttingin and out of cones, angled runs, etc.
