IntroductionThe " Modern Times " was released in 1936 and it was the last

silent film Chaplin. This film is often seen as one of the most successful film of the famous filmmaker. It includes only a few dialogue scenes, yet most of the movie is mute.

The film was released during the period between the two wars. Economically, the United States and Europe are affected by economic and social crisis, it's the stock market crash of October 1929 in New York. At the political level, the peace that prevails in Europe is threatened by the rise to power of totalitarian like Hitler in Germany.

Charlie Chaplin Charlie Chaplin, born in April, 16th 1889. He was an English comic actor and filmmaker who rose to fame in the silent era. Chaplin became a worldwide icon through his screen persona "the Tramp" and is considered one of the most important figures of the film industry. His career spanned more than 75 years, from a child in the Victorian era to close to his death at the age of 88, in December, 25th 1977, and encompassed both adulation and controversy.

Charlie Chaplin comes from a poor background, his mother was a singer and his father was comedian. Charlie Chaplin began on stage at 5 yearsand tourned in England as a pantomime.He was spotted in the United States by the Keystone, a firm specializing in slapstick. He created the character of Charlot in 1914,he plays and runs countless short andfeature films. It was an instant success. He became the highest paid artist in the world in 1916 and signs several masterpieces: The Kid (1921), The Gold Rush (1925), The Lights City (1931).

A factory worker whose boss is testing new techniques to improve theproductivity, Charlot disrupts the assembly line by the distraction.Driven mad by the furious pace of the machines, he was hospitalized.After his release, he is mistaken for a leader of demonstration and stopped. Free, he met a young orphan who steals food for not starve. The two tramps go looking for a job out of the misery.

Chaplin is not only the director of this work, he is also the writer and producer and he is also the main actor of his generation . In this film, he donned for the last time , the role of Charlie. Charlie Chaplin began preparing the film in 1934, by imagining as his first talking film. But ultimately disappointed with the result , he decided to only incorporate sound effects, to monitor large increases film at that time. The movie is in general mute, but some scenes have sound, like the famous scene when he dances and sings.
