he recent years narrate a remarkable growth saga of polymer consumption in India. Primarily driven by user categories such as automotive, packaging, construction, agriculture, among others, its growth rate has consistently been double the country’s macro-economic progress barometer of Gross

Domestic Product (GDP) rate. Moreover, according to a projection, India is likely to be the world’s third largest market in polymer consumption by as early as the next year!

A key question at this juncture is regarding the enablers to further drive the growth of polymers globally. Amid the changing demand dynamics of user industries for high-performance and functional products, those innovative tools and applications, which can not only bring about the desired property and aesthetic elements in polymers, but also are cost-effective, will win the decision-makers’ mindshare in the foreseeable future. As far as the Indian market goes, with rising tech-savviness and quality benchmarks, the impact of this would not be significantly different.

At the same time, it is important to analyse the growing footprint of biodegradable polymers among conventional petrochemical-based polymers. Especially in user industries, where eco-compliance is of utmost substance, it is only a matter of time when the former type of polymers gains prominence. With improved mechanical properties, cutting-edge additives and better pricing, the next generation of bioplastics would expand its application portfolio to more demanding areas.

An estimation wherein the global bioplastics capacity is pegged to touch the one million tonne milestone by this year end, and to more than double from its 2010 level by 2015, clearly outlines the way forward. Turn to ‘Sector Watch’ for more such insights into the latest developments in polymers.

Moving along this theme of increasingly greener products, flexible packaging has carved a niche for itself owing to its usage of fewer natural resources, less water & energy consumption and reduced gas emissions, thereby offering a lighter package. All these lead to a positive impact on several stakeholders in the value chain, including consumers, retailers, manufacturers of flexible packaging products and, above all, the environment. While the process of substitution of rigid packaging by flexible ones seems to be the way forward, one needs to be alert in ensuring their sustainability. ‘Market Trends’ offers an interesting account of flexible packaging and the need of the hour for the plastics industry.
