Rules For Safe Operation
WarningTo avoid possible electric shock or personal injury, and to avoid possible damage to the Meter or to theequipment under test, adhere to the following rules:
Before using the Meter inspect the case. Do not usethe Meter if it is damaged or the case (or part of thecase) is removed. Look for cracks or missing plastic. Pay attention to the insulation around the connectors.Inspect the test leads for damaged insulation or exposedmetal. Check the test leads for continuity. Replacedamaged test leads with identical model number orelectrical specifications before using the Meter.Do not apply more than the rated voltage, as markedon the Meter, between the terminals or between anyterminal and grounding. The rotary switch should be placed in the right positionand no any changeover of range shall be made duringmeasurement is conducted to prevent damage of theMeter.
When the Meter working at an effective voltage over60V in DC or 30V rms in AC, special care should betaken for there is danger of electric shock.Use the proper terminals, function, and range foryour measurements. If the value to be measured is unknown, use themaximum measurement position and reduce therange step by step until a satisfactory reading isobtained.Do not use or store the Meter in an environment ofhigh temperature, humidity, explosive, inflammableand strong magnetic field. The performance of theMeter may deter iorate af ter dampened. When using the test leads, keep your fingers behindthe finger guards.Disconnect circuit power and discharge all high-voltage capacitors before testing resistance, continuity, diodes, current, or capacitance. Before measuring current, check the Meter’s fusesand turn off power to the circuit before connectingthe Meter to the circuit.

Measurement Operation
A. DC or AC Voltage Measurement (See figure 3)
WarningTo avoid harms to you or damages to the Meter fromelectric shock, please do not attempt to measurevoltages higher than 1000V although readings maybe obtained.
To measure DC/AC voltage, connect the Meter asfollows:
Model UT803: OPERATING MANUAL
1.
2.
3.
Insert the red test lead into the V terminal and theblack test lead into the COM terminal. If the measuredvalue is less than 600mV, insert the red test leadinto mV terminal instead and press RANGE buttonto select manual range 600.0mV mode, the LCDdisplays “MANUAL” and “mV”.Set the rotary switch to V ; press SELECT buttonto select DC or AC measurement mode.Connect the test leads across with the object beingmeasured. The measured value shows on the display.AC measurement displays True RMS value.
(Figure 3)
4. Press AC/AC+DC button to measure AC+DC voltage’s true RMS.
NoteIn each range, the Meter has an input impedance of10M except 600mV range has 3000M . Thisloading effect can cause measurement errors in highimpedance circuits. If the circuit impedance is lessthan or equal to 10k , the error is negligible (0.1%or less). When DC/AC voltage measurement has beencompleted, disconnect the connection between thetesting leads and the circuit under test, and removethe testing leads away from the input terminals ofthe Meter.

B. DC or AC Current Measurement (See figure 4)
WarningBefore connect the Meter in serial with the testedreturn circuit, close the return circuit’s current to avoidthe dangerous of sparking. If the fuse burns out during measurement, the Metermay be damaged or the operator himself may be hurt.Use proper terminals, function, and range for themeasurement. When the testing leads are connectedto the current terminals, do not parallel them acrossany circuit.
To measure current, do the following:

4.
Insert the red test lead into the µA mA terminal andthe black test lead into the COM terminal.Set the rotary switch to an appropriate measurementposition in µA , mA or A , press SELECT buttonto select AC or DC measurement mode.Connect the test leads in serial with the object beingmeasured. The measured value shows on the display.AC measurement displays True RMS value.Press AC/AC+DC button to measure AC+DCcurrent’s true RMS
(Figure 4)
NoteIf the value of current to be measured is unknown, use the maximum measurement position, and reducethe range step by step until a satisfactory reading isobtained. For safety sake, each measurement time of highcurrent (>5A) should be less than 10 seconds andthe interval time between 2 measurements shouldbe greater than 15 minutes. When current measurement has been completed, disconnect the connection between the testing leadsand the circuit under test, and remove the testingleads away from the input terminals of the Meter.

C. Measuring Resistance (see figure 5)
WarningTo avoid damages to the Meter or to the devices undertest, disconnect circuit power and discharge all thehigh-voltage capacitors before measuring resistance. To avoid harms to you, please do not attempt to inputvoltages higher than 60V DC or 30V AC.
To measure resistance, connect the Meter as follows:

3 .
(Figure 5)
21
NoteThe test leads and the Meter inside wire will bringaround 0.2 to 0.5 of error to resistancemeasurement when measuring low resistance. Toobtain accurate readings in low-resistance, short-circuit the test lead beforehand and record the readingobtained, call this reading as X. Then use the equation:measured resistance value (Y) – (X) = accuratereadings of resistance. If reading with shorted test leads is not < 0.5 ,check for loose test leads, incorrect function selection,or any other reasons. When measuring high resistance (>1M ), it is normalto take several seconds to obtain a stable reading. In order to obtain stable reading, choose shorter testlead to carrying out measurement. The LCD displays OL indicating open-circuit for thetested resistor or the resistor value is higher than themaximum range of the Meter.

(Figure 7)
To test a diode out of a circuit, connect the Meter as follows:
NoteConnect the test leads to the proper terminals assaid above to avoid error display. The LCD willdisplay OL indicating diode being tested is open orpolarity is reversed. The unit of diode is Volt (V),displaying the forward voltage drop readings.Open circuit voltage is around 2.7V.

Model UT803: OPERATING MANUAL
(Figure 8)
NoteThe Meter displays a fixed value which is thedistributed capacitor’s value of the inside Meter. Toensure accuracy, it is necessary to subtract this valuefrom the measured value when measuring smallcapacitor.Multi-purpose socket can be used instead of testingleads. Insert the capacitor being tested into thecorresponding input terminal of the multi-purposesocket. When measuring small capacitor value, more accurate value can be obtained using multi-purpose socket. It is normal to take a longer time when testing acapacitor value higher than 600µF.The LCD displays OL indicating the tested capacitoris shorted or it exceeds the maximum range.

MaintenanceThis section provides basic maintenance informationincluding battery and fuse replacement instruction.
WarningDo not attempt to repair or service your Meter unlessyou are qualified to do so and have the relevantcalibration, performance test, and service information. To avoid electrical shock or damage to the Meter, doyou get water inside the case.
A. General Service
Periodically wipe the case with a damp cloth andmild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. To clean the terminals with cotton bar with detergent,as dirt or moisture in the terminals can affect readings.Turn off the power of the Meter when it is not in use.Take out the battery when it is using for a long time.Do not use or store the Meter in a place of humidity, high temperature, explosive, inflammable and strongmagnetic field.

B. Replacing the Fuses (see figure 12)
WarningTo avoid electrical shock or arc blast, or personalinjury or damage to the Meter, use specified fusesONLY in accordance with the following procedure.
To replace the Meter’s fuse:1. Press the POWER to turn the Meter off, disconnect the power cord and remove all connections from the terminals.2. Fuse 1: Remove the screws from the power socket at the rear of the Meter. Remove the fuse by gently prying one end loose, then take out the fuse from its bracket. Then install the replacement fuse. Fuse 2 and 3: Use a coin to open the accessories compartment at the top of the front cover, then you will see a fuse compartment. Open the fuse compartment to replace fuse 2 and 3. Remove the fuse by gently prying one end loose, then take out the fuse from its bracket. Then install the replacement fuse.
