The Model G1140 will draw approximately 8amps at 220V and 16 amps at 110V. Circuit pro-tection when operating at 220V should be on abreaker rated at 15 amps or a fuse rated at 20amps. At 110V a 20 amp slow-blow fuse orbreaker should be used. Fusing at amperage rat-ings higher than these will not adequately protectthe motor from high heat caused by overloading. You are cautioned that equipment returned to usfor service that shows evidence of being over-fused will be repaired or replaced totally at thecustomer’s expense, regardless of the presentwarranty status.

Be aware that other machines operating on thesame circuit simultaneously will also add loadwhich can cause the circuit protection system totrip.

SECTION 2: CIRCUIT REQUIREMENTS220V/110VOperation

The Model G1140 has a dual-voltage 11⁄2 HP,1720 RPM motor which has been pre-wired foruse in a 220V single phase circuit. The cord setenclosed does not have a plug as the style ofplug you require will depend upon the type ofservice you currently have or plan to install. If youwill be installing a new receptacle and plug, werecommend either of the styles shown in Figure1. Note that you have the choice between simpleplug-in and twist-lock plug styles.

Should you prefer to utilize the 110V capability, awiring diagram is provided near the back of thismanual showing the wiring changes needed.Operating at 110V will also require installing agrounded plug.

Figure 1. Two typical outlet/plug configurations.

Grounding

This equipment must be grounded. Verifythat any existing electrical outlet and circuit youintend to plug into is actually grounded. If it isnot, it will be necessary to run a separate 12A.W.G. copper grounding wire from the outletto a known ground. Under no circumstancesshould the grounding pin from any three-pronged plug be removed. Serious injury mayoccur.

In the event of a malfunction or breakdown, grounding provides a path of least resistance forelectric current to reduce the risk of electricshock. This tool is equipped with an electric cordhaving an equipment-grounding conductor whichmust be properly connected to a grounding plug. The plug must be inserted into a matching outletthat is properly installed and grounded in accor-dance with all local codes and ordinances.

Improper connections of the electrical-groundingconductor can result in risk of electric shock. Theconductor with green or green and yellow stripedinsulation is the electrical-grounding conductor. Ifrepair or replacement of the electric cord or plugis necessary, do not connect the equipmentgrounding conductor to a live terminal.

Site Considerations

1. Floor Load: Your G1140 Sander representsa large weight load in a small footprint. Mostcommercial floors are suitable for the ModelG1140. Some residential floors may requireadditional build up to support both machineand operator.

2. Working Clearances: Consider existing andanticipated needs, size of material to beprocessed through each machine, andspace for auxiliary stands, work tables orother machinery when establishing a homefor your edge sander. Allow sufficient roomto safely run your machines in any foresee-able operation.

3. Lighting and Outlets: Lighting should bebright enough to eliminate shadow and pre-vent eye strain. Electrical circuits should bededicated or large enough to handle amper-age requirements. Outlets should be locatednear each machine so power or extensioncords are clear of high-traffic areas. Observelocal electrical codes for proper installationof new lighting, outlets, or circuits.

NOTICEEnsure that the Model G1140 is located on aflat, level surface. This will maximize thestability of the machine and ensure thatadjustments are accurate. For conditionswhere permanent mounting is possible, werecommend bolting the Edge Sander toyour floor. This type of mounting will mini-mize vibration and provide a more stablework environment.

Be certain that this machine is properlygrounded before attempting to use it. If youare unsure of the quality and condition ofthe circuit you intend to use, have it inspect-ed and repaired by a qualified electrician.

Clean Up

The unpainted surfaces are coated with a waxyoil to protect it from corrosion during shipment.Remove this protective coating with a solventcleaner or citrus-based degreaser. Avoid chlo-rine-based solvents as they may damage paintedsurfaces should they come in contact. Always fol-low the usage instructions on the product youchoose for clean up.

Many of the solvents commonly used toclean machinery can be highly flammable, and toxic when inhaled or ingested. Alwayswork in well-ventilated areas far frompotential ignition sources when dealingwith solvents. Use care when disposing ofwaste rags and towels to be sure they donot create fire or environmental hazards.Keep children and animals safely awaywhen cleaning and assembling thismachine.

Do not use gasoline or other petroleum-based solvents to remove this protectivecoating. These products generally have lowflash points which makes them extremelyflammable. A risk of explosion and burningexists if these products are used. Seriouspersonal injury may occur.

All die-cut metal parts have a sharp edge(called “flashing”) on them after they areformed. This is generally removed at thefactory. Sometimes a bit of flashing mightescape inspection, and the sharp edge maycause cuts or lacerations when handled. Please examine the edges of all die-cutmetal parts and file or sand the edge toremove the flashing before handling.

SECTION 6: OPERATIONS

Edge & End Sanding

Figure 26. Typical edge sanding method.

Figure 26 depicts a typical edge sandingprocess. The back stop can be used for shorterworkpieces if so desired.

Once the assembly is complete and the adjust-ments are done to your satisfaction, you areready to test the machine.

Turn on the power supply at the main panel.Press the START button. Make sure that your fin-ger is poised on the STOP button, just in casethere’s a problem. The edge sander should runsmoothly, with little or no vibration or rubbingnoises. Strange or unnatural noises should beinvestigated and corrected before operating themachine further.

If noises occur that can not be found by visualinspection, feel free to contact our service depart-ment for help.

If the sander runs smoothly, try sanding a pieceof lumber. If a problem exists, stop the machineand review all the adjustments. Call for assis-tance, if needed.

Test Run

Horizontal Sanding

When face sanding, tilt the platen so it is hori-zontal and use the back stop to hold your work-piece. Apply even hand pressure while movingthe workpiece back and forth for even belt wear.

When contour sanding, adjust the auxiliary tableup or down so the workpiece is roughly centeredon the roller. Move the workpiece over the rollerto achieve your desired profile.

Contour Sanding

Sanding surfaces are capable of causingserious personal injury if they come in con-tact with fingers, hands or other body parts.Use extreme care to provide a large bufferarea between the sanding belt and any partof your body.

Do not operate this equipment when wear-ing loose clothing, gloves, neckties, rings, bracelets or other jewelry which might getcaught in the moving belt or trappedbetween the belt and the tables. Seriouspersonal injury may result.

SECTION 7: MAINTENANCE

Lubrication

Table

Shielded and pre-lubricated ball bearings requireno lubrication for the life of the bearings. In a con-tinuous-use environment, expect the bearings tolast for several years. With intermittent use, bear-ings can be expected to last much longer. Allbearings are standard sizes and can be easilyreplaced.

The table and other non-painted surfaces on theModel G1140 should be protected against rustand pitting. Wiping the sander clean after everyuse ensures that moisture from sander dust isn’tallowed to trap moisture against bare metal sur-faces.

Some woodworkers recommend using automo-tive paste wax on exposed steel and cast ironsurfaces. The wax provides a layer of protection,as well as reducing friction between lumber andthe table, making cuts faster and smoother. Avoidwaxes that contain silicone or other syntheticingredients. These materials can find their wayinto lumber that’s being worked, and can makestaining and finishing difficult. If you use pastewax, make sure that it’s 100% Carnauba wax.

Make a habit of inspecting your sander each timeyou use it. Check for the following conditions andrepair or replace when necessary.

1. Loose mounting bolts.

2. Worn switch.

3. Worn or damaged cords and plugs.

4. Damaged sanding belt.

5. Any other condition that could hamper thesafe operation of this machine.
