Text to Change (TTC) and mobile phones in Africa and South-America.
TTC is a mobile content provider working on:-Health;-Education;-Economic Development;-Accountability.
-Offices in The Netherlands and Uganda;-7 people staff;-200,000 participants in 2010;-Working in: Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Cameroon, Madagascar, Namibia and Bolivia;-Clients: Mobile providers, UN, Governments, NGO’s and Companies.-Scaling to 16 countries in 2011 and 2012 via the Connect4Change consortium.

Example of a TTC program:
-Africa based organization looks for added value via the use of mobile phones to their existing development campaigns;-Local organization pays for the TTC services with possible support from TTC partners in the US and Europe;-TTC installs the hardware and software at the mobile providers in that country;-Content is being designed by local partner;-Third party can be added for research, M&E, measuring outcomes;-Partnership and scale are key.

Thoughts, direction and the challenges of mLearning
Cross-sector approach.-mLearning shouldn’t be handled as a stand alone sector in the mobile for development field.-Cross cutting campaigns: mHealth, mobile accountability, Economic Development via cell phones and mLearning should be combined.

TTC and mLearning 2011-2015
As part of its larger Mobiles for Development fund TTC will implement mLearning campaigns in:Ghana, Malawi, Uganda, Zambia, Bolivia, Ethiopia, Kenya and Peru-Teacher absenteeism sms campaign.-Motivational messages for parents, students and teachers.-Capacity building of SMC’s en PTA’s.-Accountability and budget tracking via sms.-Mobile learning, short video’s, images and sms-based educational material via the mobile phone.
“Improved quality and equity of the education system supported by 60 partner organizations for 10,000 teachers and managers of 800 education institutions and for 300 parents associations/ grass root education organizations in 8 countries through the integration of mobiles in primary, secondary and teacher education and vocational training with a special focus on empowerment of women and girls.”
