Academic Integrity & the MLA

Dr Jon Buscall * August 2008 *

Page 2: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

2

Every game has rules

Page 3: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

3

Some folks obey them...

Page 4: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

4

Others don’t !

Page 5: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

5

At school, university, and in the real world...

Page 6: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

6

it’s not OK to pass other people’s work off as your own.

Page 7: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

7

Written work that does so is referred to as plagiarism

Page 8: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

8

plagiarism: the act of presenting the words, ideas, images, sounds, or the creative expression of others as your own.

Page 9: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

9

IEGS values academic integrity

Page 10: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

10

And thus requires

you to use the MLA

Page 11: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

11

Page 12: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

12

Think of it as a way to document your essays, illustrating what is exactly your work and what information comes from established scholars...

Page 13: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

13

With the MLA your work will ooze professionalism...

Page 14: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

14

And it won’t cause you...

Page 15: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

15

...pain and ignominy

Page 16: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

16

Huh?

Page 17: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

17

Plagiarism is usually punished ...

• with suspension

• the sack

• the loss of your reputation

• the loss of face

Page 18: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

18

“So what do I have to do?”

Page 19: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

19

The first thing you need to know...

Page 20: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

20

...is how to format your essay

Page 21: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

21

Instructions...

• use A4 paper

• set the font to 12 point, New Times Roman

• 2.54 cm margins

• double-space your text throughout

• use a running header with your name: e.g. Buscall 1

• number pages consecutively, starting on the first page

Page 22: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

22

Indent the first line of each paragraph by five spaces (tab)

Page 23: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

23

Next up is...

Page 24: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

24

Parenthetical or in-text citation...

Page 25: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

25

Huh?

Page 26: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

26

To explain...

• Within the body of your text, you must cite your sources as you use them...

• You must cite any and all data, facts, information, opinions, ideas, tables, charts, photographs, etc, that you obtained in your research

Page 27: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

27

What’s more...

References in the text must clearly point to specific sources in the list of works cited and identify the location of the information referred to as specifically as possible

Page 28: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

28

and that means..?

Page 29: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

29

• E.g. Author’s name in text:

Wordsworth stated that Romantic poetry was marked by a “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” (263).

Page 30: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

30

• E.g. Author’s name in reference:

Romantic poetry is characterised by the “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” (Wordsworth 263).

Page 31: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

31

• E.g. Author’s name in text:

Wordsworth extensively explored the role of emotion in the creative process (263).

Page 32: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

32

Citations refer to the entry in the Works Cited page

Page 33: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

33

Works Cited

Wordsworth, William. Lyrical Ballads. London: Oxford UP, 1967.

Page 34: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

34

More Examples...

• Multiple Citations

... as has been discussed elsewhere (Burke 3; Dawson 21).

• Authors with the same surname:

“All dogs should be trained to sit before the age of five,” is a good approach to basic dog training (M. King 17).

Page 35: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

35

“Do I need to cite everything?”

Page 36: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

36

Common sense and ethics should determine your need for documenting sources.

Page 37: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

37

You do not need to give sources for:• familiar proverbs, • well-known quotations or• common knowledge.

Page 38: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

38

Works Cited...

• Under the heading “Works Cited” all sources mentioned in your paper must be listed

• List sources alphabetically e.g. Lastname, Firstname. Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication.

Page 39: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

39

Examples...

Works Cited

Heinerman, John. Heinerman’s Encyclopedia of Fruits, Vegetables and Herbs. Paramus, NJ: Prentice Hall, 1988.

Kowalchik, Claire and William H. Hylton. Rodale’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs. Emmaus, PA: Rodale Press, 1998.

Wardlaw, Gordon M. and Anne M. Smith. Contemporary Nutrition. Boston: McGraw Hill, 2006.

Page 40: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

40

The purpose of the list is to...

Page 41: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

41

...identify and credit the sources you used...

Page 42: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

42

...and enable the reader to locate your sources.

Page 43: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

43

Some final thoughts...

Page 44: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

44

Formatting rules make essays uniform and easier to read...

Page 45: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

45

In-text citations document your sources, establish your credibility and help justify your argument.

Page 46: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

46

The “Works Cited” list allows readers to refer for themselves to scholarly material...

Page 47: MLA Guidelines for IEG Södermalm

47

If the goal is to prevent plagiarism...

• establish a climate where academic integrity is valued

• design assignments that require students to document their sources

• set up check-points in the form of drafts, outlines, preliminary Works Cited

• keep portfolios of student writing to refer to

• vary assignments and topic suggestions frequently

• clarify the extent to which collaboration is acceptable
