To many, Edward Middleditch isinexorably linked with the ‘KitchenSink’ painters but his work went on todevelop in a very different direction.

A large, impressive oil and typical ofMiddleditch's later works inspired bythe play of light and nature.

derrick Greaves (b1927) first came to the attention of the artworld when he represented Britain at the Venice Biennale inthe 1950s alongside other 'Kitchen Sink' painters.disillusioned with the social realism of the late 1950s Greaveshad a departure from his somewhat austere representationalstyle. he cleared his paintings of unnecessary clutter andembarked on creating images using bold line-drawn motifs set against subdued backgrounds of which this still life is abeautiful example. The informality of the collage in thebackground provides a contrast and tension with the precisionof the drawn line. Following his exhibition at Fischer Fine Artin 1980 the term 'collage painting' was coined to describethese monumental 'drawings' on canvas.
