MITCHELL KANASHKEVICH

Mitchell Kanashkevich is known for his passion in capturing

different

cultures that some of us today have no knowledge of, their lifestyle,

their state of living and traditional practices.

He always aim to capture the human element within the

environment whether it is challenging or dangerous.

He’s a travel and documentary photographer that showcases a

rather unique technique in capturing moments that are far beyond

what our

eyes can see.

CAREER

“I freelance and shoot documentary photo

stories on the above mentioned topics. Much of

my travel/documentary photography is

represented by Getty Images, while my cultural

portraits, both color and black and white are in

the private collections of photo lovers and

collectors worldwide.”

MITCHELL KANASHKEVICH

He’s a photographer now based in Australia

He has the style of black and white and very high contrast colors in his

photos

He conveys the emotion of the moment through the use of natural lighting

and the environment’s features to interpret the power of the image

He studied film but he just learned how to fall in love with photography

with less equipments. He liked travelling especially in Europe and South

East Asia. He didn’t consider himself as a photo journalist but he’s more of

a mixed travel and documentary photographer. He wants the unique story of

human conditions and their adaptations to their various cultures.

Page 6: Mitchell Kanashkevinch - Famous Photographer as Role Model

He wrote this book

Called Natural Light where

he explains that you need

not

expensive gears or

equipment

to capture a very strong

image

or to convey its power once

you understood the usage of

natural lighting and proper

exposures.

MITCHELL KANASHKEVICH

In my opinion his works brought us closer to the far

cultures of the world. His photos breathe each moment

captured alive in our eyes. It has this surrealistic feel in the

reality. He changed the dullness of a photograph with his

style and manifesto in taking images. I believe that he

successfully created a unique feel in seeing and handling

images to not just for viewing purposes but it has the sense

of empathy with use of colors and composition, which is

also a massive contribution to the field of photography.

MAKING A LIVING

He lives a simple lifestyle, his income is enough to sustain as

he have no home, he lives in a kind of suitcase and backpack

living and he has no family yet to feed. Most of his income is

contributed to the funding of his gears and trips in the future.

He does stock sales, occasional print sales, sales to

magazines and e-books as his streams of decent income.

Most of his assignments and projects are self funded

although lately he had done one for Vanity Fair.

He also had shots for Getty and Corbis Images

TECHNIQUES

He shoots in raw footage

He works on multiple layers

of the image and blending

them together in PS

Dodging, Burning and

Painting inside layer masks

He wants the image to be

striking with a surreal feeling

to perfect it but not over

processed

Page 12: Mitchell Kanashkevinch - Famous Photographer as Role Model

He takes note of his white balance to keep the

image warm and have the contrast effect.

Page 13: Mitchell Kanashkevinch - Famous Photographer as Role Model

He explores different angles to capture the moment. He does

portrait too yet with a vibrant and warm effect on it and his use of

natural lighting but sometimes an off camera flash.

Page 14: Mitchell Kanashkevinch - Famous Photographer as Role Model

Mitchell’s work [left] is very

distinct and really noticeable

that he is the photographer

compared to

Timothy Allen [below],

another travel

photographer,.

Mitchell has this drama effect on his

photo with the lively colors that really

suits in the mood of the scene.

His way of capturing an image with

the proper lighting made his photos

realistic and suggests motion.

He has this light and dark balance

on his photos and a contrast on it.

RESPONSE

I believe his works are really inspiring. It created a sense of connection to me

as I like his style of contrast and warm colors. I used to paint like that and

draw my ideas. He has an audience to maker to passion kind of cycle whereby

the way you see it is not just literally but it opens up another window where

passion is visible.

You can really see the effort and that he knows his stuff, loving what he’s

doing and just getting out there, interact with people and studying their

human plus environmental adaptations.

He’s optimistic in a way that he started small and he just really pursued his

passion on it though sometimes time will come when critics who knows little

of what photography really is brings you down. He said in one of his interview

to pursue on for amateur photographers, start small and do the thing you

enjoy. Explore and be free, be passionate on what you do.

PHOTOS

The following slides will show the five photos that I

have chosen to study with. I wouldn’t type in the

titles, I want everyone to feel the image and to

translate these feelings to words on how they

perceive them. This could be an activity to

deconstruct the photos and each insights or opinions

are open. That way we could interpret how powerful

images can be as they’re differently perceived by

people.

Page 17: Mitchell Kanashkevinch - Famous Photographer as Role Model

Very vibrant and clear. The tree on the BG is linked to the rod he’s

holding so there’s a connection between BG and FG.

The colors are semi-ivorish in a pleasing way as it portrays the feeling

of a warm day and how this man is in this particular moment

Page 18: Mitchell Kanashkevinch - Famous Photographer as Role Model

A cool BG in contrary with the focus which is the fire that the man is

holding.

There’s also depth in how the angle shows the environment and the scene.

Gives the effect of cold and windy atmosphere

A long journey ahead

Page 19: Mitchell Kanashkevinch - Famous Photographer as Role Model

Warm color diffusing to light the main subject,

Depth of field for the man on the right

Diagonal line in the composition

The light brings up the mood of the scene

Gives the effect of sanctity, seriousness and silence

Page 20: Mitchell Kanashkevinch - Famous Photographer as Role Model

A very legendary use of natural lighting from the windows like the rays

themselves are emanating from the ground.

Stuffy and hot atmosphere

Tension and seriousness with composition of the scene with all warm

colors to exacerbate the fact that it could be a fast motion combat

A black and white photo of Mitchell which then again differentiates him

from other bw photographers. Here he proves that still though you’re

image has no colors, he can still make it alive but now in a different

mood.

Speculars and highlights at the left side of his face shows a subtle

tension as he prepares to strike.

Busy BG but the FG is the main focus, it is to show the complexity of his

situation in the forest.

I could say its natural lighting as most of the light are refracted,

bounced and diffused everywhere because of the plants and trees

creating softer shadows and tones,
