Admission is free for Chamber members; $15 for potential Chamber members. As the Christmas holiday shopping season approaches, shoplifting and theft are expected to increase. Anticipating potential crime, the Chamber will host a shoplifting seminar to bring shoplifting awareness to local small business owners. The Chamber of Commerce and the Fairfield Police Department will present a short training course, approximately one hour, for business owners and employees, in refer- ence to theft [shoplifting] in our community. Topics discussed will include: • What is the cost of shoplifting? • Detection of shoplifters • Shoplifting techniques • Group to watch • Shoplifting tools • Prevention techniques • Apprehension of shoplifters • Legal considerations Fairfield Police Captain Dave Thomas is the seminar’s featured speaker. Thomas will provide instruction on customer shoplifting prevention and prosecution, as well as provide theft-deterring equipment and procedure dem- onstrations and discuss legal procedures relat- ing to shoplifter prosecution. Captain Thomas stressed that he and Chief Julie Harvey continue to make cooperation with area businesses a major priority at the Fairfield Police Department, due to the sup- port for this community from small business owners and their employees. Prior to working with the Fairfield Police Department, Thomas worked as a plain clothes officer preventing internal and external theft at Kmart and Walmart in Loss Prevention and for the Ottumwa Police Department. During his tenure at Fairfield Police Department, Captain Thomas rose through the ranks of Officer, Sergeant, Lieutenant, and now Captain. He has worked at the Tactical Team Medic, the Tactical Team Leader, and now the Tactical Team Commander. He also has served as a Field Training Officer, a K-9 Officer, and a Detective. He’s served as a shift supervisor, an Investigations Department supervisor, and now as the Assistant Chief / Patrol Supervisor.
