Realtime Satellite Gateway Buoy with Inductive Data Link

DesignThe design goal was to create a compact and cost efficient telemetry gateway buoy with long service intervals.

The new MISat buoy is based on a design already proven in various deployments near the Cape Verde Islands and in the Irminger Sea south of Greenland.

The buoy is suitable for deep water moorings with mooring lengths of 6000m and more. As the unit is designed to withstand external pressure up to 50bar, temporary submerging during deployment or heavy weather is not a problem.

The corrosion proof titanium system housing hosts a refillable battery container with a 1600Wh energy capacity, an inductive modem module for communication with mooring mounted sensors as well as the system electronics.

The upper antenna dome contains an IRIDIUM satellite transponder, a GPS receiver, antennas and a small navigation light. A meteorological sensor package (precise air pressure & temperature; sensors rated to an overpressure of 50bar) is optionally available.

The flotation collar is manufactured from syntactic foam.

FeaturesThe integrated Port.8 low power data logger and system controller is responsible for managing sensor data polling, data filtering and reduction, data forwarding via satellite, monitoring of the buoys position etc.

Data is stored in the loggers SDHC/SDXC card.

The systems energy capacity is sufficient to e.g. hourly poll data from a set of mooring mounted sensors (up to 98 are possible) with inductive interface, store the data and forward data via the satellite interface every 6 hours for over one year.

Acoustic communication capabilities can be added by integrating a HAM.Base hydro acoustic modem with inductive gateway into the mooring.

The special mooring setup with a large bending restrictor, distributed surface flotation along the first part of the mooring is designed to withstand even rough conditions for extended deployment periods.
