Minutes: AIAA Structural Dynamics TC, Jan. 15, 2014 2014 SciTech Forum, National Harbor, MD
Recorded by Matt Allen Action Items in Bold: Introductions: Noted that 4 of our 5 new TC members were in attendance, even though they don’t take office until May. Secretary report (Willis) (see attached charts): - Need someone to take minutes for this meeting. Emmett has changed work assignments and needs to rotate off. Matt Allen volunteered to take the minutes. (Will need to choose a new secretary.) State of the TC (Taylor) (see attached charts): - Some discussion of the tenure of TC members. Suggested tenure is 3 years.
Encouraged all members to be actively engaged in a subcommittee or otherwise. - Several members rotating off of the TC, with at least five new members joining. - Awards subcommittee needs a new chair. Ray Gordnier will be unavailable due to
medical issues. - Crichlow nominations are due Mar. 15th (including references). State of AIAA (Willis) (see attached charts): - AIAA had to lay off ~11 people (25%) of staff as part of cost cutting measures. - Feedback regarding new SciTech forum?
o Comment: Can we condense papers into ~3 days to make it easier for those who need to return to teaching.
o Comment: New format wastes 8-10 AM hours with general (and perhaps not of interest) keynote lectures. Also the 12-2:30 slot seems to be under-utilized as well.
o Comment: It was very nice having many of the papers collected into a small part of the forum.
- Taylor will collect TC feedback regarding the new SciTech format and pass that on to the committee.
Publications SC (Griffith) (see attached charts): - Need contributions for newsletter. Discussed possible ways to distribute / audience. Standards SC (Kinney): - Reported on progress in modal test standards. - Need more diverse datasets to provide evidence for best practices. Most tests are
currently space applications. Education & Outreach SC (Hebert) (see attached charts): - Discussed outreach events. Difficulty planning those in the 1st-2nd weeks of July.
Can we find schools?
- Liaison SC (Welsh): - Noted several meetings which may be of interest. Website SC (Wickramasinghe) (see attached charts): - Website is still up and active. - Send photos for your member profile pages. Conferences SC (Kosmatka) (see attached charts): - Reviewed SDTC committee member responsibilities. - Need a TC rep for the 2016 SciTech Forum: Deputy for 2015 (Orlando) and becomes
lead for 2016 (San Diego). Jack McNamara volunteered to shadow for 2015. - Abstracts 438 compared to 690 in Boston, 992 in Honolulu. Half as many papers
uploaded as in Hawaii, ~20-40% reduction compared to typical years. - Student Paper Competition: Thank you to those who helped review papers over the
winter break. New Business (Willis) - Voted affirmatively to have Fall meeting Aug/Sept at Sikorsky (CT) - Vice Chair – Chad Hebert elected - Secretariat - Mike Ross elected (not present, but had agreed to serve) - Aeroelastic Prediction Workshop II – To be held at SciTech 2016. J. Heeg (LaRC)
looking for help in co-chairing. - Out-going Chair, Paul Taylor, presented with service plaque by in-coming Chair, Bruce Willis, and thanked by all

It is all about Growth….
• If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten. –Tony Robbins
• If you are not growing, you are dying. –Many
• It is not the strongest of the species that survive,
nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change. – Charles Darwin
11
Things in work (or coming down the pipeline)
• New Messaging Purpose: To ignite and celebrate aerospace ingenuity and
collaboration and its importance to our way of life. Promise: To be your vital lifelong link to and champion for
the collective creativity, brainpower, and achievements of the aerospace profession.
• Enhanced on-line engagement capabilities • Growth into new technical areas • Engagement of sections/YPs/Students • More engagement with policy issues • Collaborations with other organizations
12
Guiding principles for AIAA forums
• Ensure our Institute is relevant to aerospace professionals • Ensure our conferences integrate a spectrum of topics of interest
to the profession (technical disciplines, systems, policy, operations, etc.) and other areas of the Institute
• Ensure our overall events provide meaningful professional
development and interaction opportunities to the broad aerospace community (conference papers/presentations, networking, education, exhibits, etc.)
• Ensure our events are financially viable (both for the attendee and for the Institute)
• Ensure that our conferences are “must attend” events for all those in our profession and can accommodate expansion into new technology and program areas 13
What do we want to accomplish with the Integration Tier?
• Expand the products that AIAA offers at its events to a broader swath of aerospace professionals than the R&D community, to whom it has most appealed historically
• Entice design engineers, analysts, systems engineers, etc.,
to join AIAA, or to become active if already a member, by offering compelling and topical subject matter, speakers and presenters
• Bridge gap between plenary and technical sessions and offer
relevant and instructive topics and materials to the great number of aerospace professionals who may not think of, or see, AIAA as offering much to them in terms of professional career development, training, or networking
14
What is the “Integration Layer” anyway?
Content: Operational topics System integration Technical program management topics Cross-disciplinary topics Emerging Technologies Test, Verification, Reliability, Safety, Quality issues Policy and regulation topics Workforce and professional development issues Supply chain discussions Topics related to the intersection of government/industry/academia
15
What is the Integration Tier anyway?
• Format Not envisioned as traditional technical paper sessions
but as sessions to allow dialogue and provide information that participants can apply at work
Includes various format types including but not limited to:
– Panel discussions focused on lessons learned, best practices, and case studies
– Tutorials, seminars, workshops – Joint sessions typical at current conferences when
multiple committees have an interest in the same topic
16
How to build a strong Integration Layer
• Must be a combination of member and staff efforts • Technical Group Directors have the big picture about their areas
and can help identify topics • Program committees have insight into relevant topics in their
area • Corporate members have insight into industry issues • Emerging Technology Committee can help identify new trends
in technology • Staff has insight into industry wide trends and movements • Students/Professors have insight into academic/education
topics
17
Outcomes of a well executed Integration Layer
• Creation of new technical communities in AIAA • Creation of new program communities in AIAA • AIAA recognized as being on the forefront of industry issues • AIAA provides valuable workforce/professional development
information to members/attendees • AIAA viewed as relevant- attracting more members • We all go home from AIAA forums a bit more informed about a
wider variety of topics
18
In Summary…..
• AIAA is a great organization! • There is a lot going on! • There are a lot of opportunities! • We are going to come out of this stronger, more responsive and
flexible to our environment! • Hope you stay engaged!

Outreach 2014 Efforts • Contacted Trena Ferrell in the Education Office at NASA
Goddard
• Received recommendation to visit either Oxon Hill Middle School (Teacher: Ms. Tameka Woodruff) or Oxon Hill High School (Teacher: Ms. Yolanda King-Davis)
• Due to shortened time schedule (Apr to Jan) resulting from AIAA conference reorganization and time lost due to Government Furlough, there was not sufficient time to make contact with these teachers and plan an event
2
Outreach 2015 Efforts • For SciTech 2015 the subcommittee will have one year
to plan an outreach event
• We look forward to performing an outreach event in 2015
• We will include the Structures TC (POC Michael Wolff) in the event
3
Outreach Subcommittee Members • Dr. Vit Babuska, Sandia National Lab, Albuquerque, NM • Ted Bartkowicz, The Boeing Company, Houston, TX • Brendan Coyne, United Launch Alliance, Denver ,CO • Nathan Falkiewicz, The Boeing Company, Seal Beach, CA • Chad Hebert, SN Corporation, Denver, CO • Teresa Kinney, NASA/Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral, FL • James Ristow, NASA/Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral, FL • Bill Schneider, Lockheed Martin Skunk Works, Palmdale, CA • Stephanie Wilson, NASA/Johnson Space Center, Houston, TX • Michael Wolff, Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, Savannah, GA • Dr. Andrew Brown, NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, AL • Dexter Johnson, NASA/Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, OH • Don Freund, Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, Savannah, GA • Mike Ross, Sandia National Lab, Albuquerque, NM

5
Lessons Learned Outreach 2013 • High school is a hard age to gage their enthusiasm. • Introduction could be more interactive. • Ensure demos are age appropriate. • Helpful to have teachers in demo session to facilitate
questions with students. • Need more time to get demo rooms setup prior to
starting sessions. • Expand on introductions of TC members, we can say a
few words about what we do. Or if time have a short Panel Q&A before the demos.
