Dolphins win overtime marathon against Miners ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Gosford,NSW- This was a crucial game between two teams locked in battle for a play off spot. Both the Central Coast Dolphins and the Wollongong Hawks have plenty of promise but have struggled to deliver this year. The Dolphins were coming off two losses and a bye and in typical Tim Sheens fashion were determined to jump out early and try and wipe the Miners out of the game from the start.

Yet controversy dominated the early moments of the game. After winning the toss and taking the ball, Quarterback Rhys Hunt drove his team down the field deep into Miners territory. Then looking to get into the end zone Hunt fumbled on a quarterback sneak. The Miners celebrated as Lance Wilson recovered the football but joy soon turned to concern as the officials huddled. Referee Chris Iskandar came out of the huddle to address the crowd and he raised his hands above his head to announce a Safety. "It was a ridiculous decision. Wilson just dived on the ball. At the worst we should have had possession at the 1 but I mean anyone knows that it is not a Safety but a touchback and it had to come out to the 20" said an angry Coach Frank Curry. "They could have challenged it. I did not have a good look at it but the could have challenged it" said Tim Sheens in response. "Anyway the game was decided by 3 points and that was worth just 2 so it did not have a big bearing on the final result".

It was really worth 8 points however as being a Safety the Miners had to punt and give possession back. This time after 6 plays Hunt handed the ball off to former Miner David Henaway who made no mistake and crashed his way over. The mIners were never in the game at this point and by the end of the 1st quarter the Dolphins had held the ball for over 12 minutes. Another former Wollongong player Beau Backo then added a field goal for 11-0.

The Miners kept fighting and then went on a 19-0 point scoring run that lasted until the 4th quarter. Touchdowns to Nesse Bolton and then Nathan Jacks appeared to swing the game in the Miners favour. But this was a game that ebbed and flowed and was high quality. Hunt found Toby Rankin on a jet screen to score with just 1m02 remaining. They still needed the two point conversion and Henaway again enjoyed being the dagger as he crashed over against tiring opposition.

In overtime Wollongong had the ball first but both sides were shut down and forced to punt the ball. Then Richie Davis made his one and only mistake. Looking to his right he tried to force the ball to Josh Boyce who was looking tired and Tai Chisholm drove on the pass to intercepted it at the Miner 23. Sheens ran one play to center the ball and then on came Backo for the winner. "I did not care how we won today. It was the result that mattered more. We needed this win and at the end of the season this could be one of the games we look back on that proved vital" Sheens said.
