Mike: Bulletproof radio. A state of high performance. Dave: You're going to want to listen through all the way to the end of today's show, because you'll learn a really cool technique to turn on a muscle in your body called the psoas, that is probably tight, at least if you sit most of the time, like a lot of us do. It's something that is completely non-obvious, and it's a really cool hack. So, listen through, learn about that, and learn about some of the new tech that's coming out of Sweden. Pretty interesting stuff today. You're listening to Bulletproof Radio with Dave Asprey. Today's cool fact of the day is that scientists discovered brain pipes, or drain pipes in our brains. And they scanned healthy people at the NIH and found that your brain actually dumps waste products through the lymphatic system. If you don't know what the lymphatic system is, this is basically the sewage system of your body that doesn't have its own circulatory system. This is why, I'll tell you in the books, and pretty much everyone will tell you like, "Move around some already. Go for a walk." It's because that pumps the lymphatic system, which is really important. That's why I'll do whole-body vibration, just to get the gunk out of the cells, so that it can drain and be excreted. But, we always thought our brain couldn't do that. In fact, there's a whole system called the glymphatic system that uses cerebral spinal fluid to wash your brain, and in “Headstrong” I write about how to upgrade the performance of that. But it turns out that the guys at NIH actually watch people's brains drain fluid into those vessels. We just never noticed the vessels, because they're running right alongside a major artery, so throughout all of medical history we just oops, didn't notice. So, that's kind of cool, because it completely changes how we think about the brain and the immune system, and how they interrelate, and it brings huge dogmas into question. Things like, oh, there's a blood-brain barrier that does, acts like, "Oh, sorry, there's these big drainpipes in the middle of the barrier that we just didn't really know about." And what they're looking at now is whether people have AMS or other neuro- inflammatory disorders may have differences in that part of the system. My theory is that, no they don't, because they're getting external toxins that damage their mitochondria, that damage nerve myelination. That's why you should keep your mitochondria strong and don't eat toxic mold for breakfast. It's a bad idea. You'relisteningtoBulletproofRadiowithDaveAsprey.Today'scoolfactofthedayisthatscientistsdiscoveredbrainpipes,ordrainpipesinourbrains.AndtheyscannedhealthypeopleattheNIHandfoundthatyourbrainactuallydumpswasteproductsthroughthelymphaticsystem.Ifyoudon'tknowwhatthelymphaticsystemis,thisisbasicallythesewagesystemofyourbodythatdoesn'thaveitsowncirculatorysystem.Thisiswhy,I'lltellyouinthebooks,andprettymucheveryonewilltellyoulike,"Movearoundsomealready.Goforawalk."It'sbecausethatpumpsthelymphaticsystem,whichisreallyimportant.That'swhyI'lldowhole-bodyvibration,justtogetthegunkoutofthecells,sothatitcandrainandbeexcreted.

But,wealwaysthoughtourbraincouldn'tdothat.Infact,there'sawholesystemcalledtheglymphaticsystemthatusescerebralspinalfluidtowashyourbrain,andin“Headstrong”Iwriteabouthowtoupgradetheperformanceofthat.ButitturnsoutthattheguysatNIHactuallywatchpeople'sbrainsdrainfluidintothosevessels.Wejustnevernoticedthevessels,becausethey'rerunningrightalongsideamajorartery,sothroughoutallofmedicalhistorywejustoops,didn'tnotice.So,that'skindofcool,becauseitcompletelychangeshowwethinkaboutthebrainandtheimmunesystem,andhowtheyinterrelate,anditbringshugedogmasintoquestion.Thingslike,oh,there'sablood-brainbarrierthatdoes,actslike,"Oh,sorry,there'sthesebigdrainpipesinthemiddleofthebarrierthatwejustdidn'treallyknowabout."

Mike: So,thethreemajormusclegroupsthatwelookatineveryactivationarethepsoas,theglutesandthehamstrings.So,thosearemainpropulsionmusclegroups,andthosearetheonesthatbasicallymakeupalotofourposture.

Dave: Talkaboutthepsoas,becauseyouknowthepsoasis,butI'mguessing,unlessyou'reintoyogaorsomesortofstudyofanatomy,mostpeopledon'tknowwhatapsoasis,andtheycan'tspelliteither.

Mike: Yes,sofirstofall,it'sspelledveryfunny.Ithasapinthebeginning,whichkindofthrowsmostpeopleoff.Butthepsoasisthedeepestmuscleinthebottom,itconnectsyourfemur,orthighboneallthewaytoyourspine,andit'swhatcauseshipflexion.So,ifyoueverthinkthatyourcoreisyourabs,likeItellpeople,"Trytotakeastepjustusingyourabs,"because,youcan't.

So,thatmuscleisbasicallyourmainpropulsorymusclelikeIsaid,andittendstogetveryshortonus,becausewespendthebulkofourdayseated.Everyoneworksatacomputer,worksatadesk,wehaveourkidssittingatadeskinschoolallday,andthatmusclejustshortens.So,weneedtoopenitup,weneedtogetitworkingrightso,forpeopletoexploretheirfullpotential.

Mike: Yeah,soessentiallywhentheglutegetslockedup,you'regoingtokindoftipbackwards,becausethemuscleshortens,andyourpsoasisgoingtobeputinavulnerableposition.So,youhavetobeabletohavebothofthemfiringattherighttime,otherwiseyou'renotgoingtomoveanywhererealefficiently,andyou'reprobablygoingtohavesomepainbecauseofit.

Dave: Alright.So,wegotyourbuttandthethighbonetothespine,thepsoas.Andwhatwastheotherone?

Mike: Thehamstring.

Dave: Thehamstring,alright.

Mike: Yeah.

Dave: Thehamstringis,Iguessit'samuscleandit's,well,atendonright?So,you'retalkingaboutthemusclethat'saroundthehamstring?

Mike: Yep.Yeah,thehamstringmusclewhichrunsallthewayupanddownfromthe[inaudible]tuberositydowntothenape,whichcausesbothhipflexion,orI'msorry,hipextension,sorryaboutthat,andkneeflexion.

Dave: Okay,sothesearethethingsyouseemostpeoplebecausewesaidwedrive,evenifwemovearoundsome,thesearetheareasthatgetweak.Andwhatdoyoumeanbyinactivated?

Mike: Sobasicallywhathappensis,themusclejustgetsintoapositionwhereitcreatesmorestability,soitstopsfiringorlocksup,andit'snotactive.Itcan'treachitsfullrangeofmotion.Itcan'treachitsproperpowerpotential,becauseit'sprotectingsomething.It'stryingtokeepsomethingsafe,especiallyinthecenterofourbody.
