For 2014, the Internal Displacement Monitoring Center (IDMC) reported that 57.3 million people around the world had been forced to flee their homes by armed conflict, generalized violence and natural disasters, while staying within their countries.

In 2014 UNHCR reported that 14.4 million refugees fled their country of origin to other country.

Recent trends (update as of the 06th January 2016, due to reports of International Organization of Migration)

Between the 30th December 2015 and 06th January 2016: Greece: 22,381 newly arrived migrants and refugees, representing a decrease of 50% in comparison to arrivals in the previous week; overall 861,270 arrived since January 2015. The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia: 22,818newly arrived migrants and refugees, representing a decrease of 12% in comparison to arrivals in the previous week; overall 404,654 arrived since June 2015. Serbia: 23,176 newly arrived migrants and refugees; representing a decrease of 24% in comparison to arrivals in the previous week; overall 586,034 arrived since January 2015. Croatia: 18,883 newly arrived migrants and refugees; representing a decrease of 23% in comparison to arrivals in the previous week; overall 573,586 arrived since September 2015. Slovenia: 18,675 newly arrived migrants and refugees; representing a decrease of 23.5% in comparison to arrivals in the previous two weeks; overall 395,711 arrived since October 2015.

Hungary: 38 newly registered arrivals of migrants and refugees, representing a decrease of 24% in comparison to registered arrivals in the previous week; overall 391,417 arrived since January 2015. Italy: 188 newly registered arrivals of migrants and refugees; representing a decrease of 93% in comparison to arrivals in the previous two weeks; overall 153,052 arrived since January 2015.

Malta: no new reported arrivals during the reporting period; overall 106 arrived since January 2015.
