Pastor Ben’s Corner “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the

Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to

the end of the Age.” Matthew 28:19-20 I want to start off by saying thank you. Thank you for giving me the blessing of being a part of our community of faith at Faith Lutheran Church. As I was sitting in our Annual Voters Meeting last month, I couldn’t help but be overwhelmed by all that the Lord is doing in and through Faith Lutheran Church.

Whether it be through the abundance of Christ’s blessings that He poured out on our congregation through your generosity, overcoming an anticipated significant budget deficit only to go above and beyond for our mission and ministry here at Faith, or through consistent offerings of your time and energy to further the Word of Christ. I am overjoyed, and humbled, that God has allowed me to be a part of this community of faith. For this I say thank you.

I am inspired how each of you has shown you’ve heard God’s call to “Go and make disciples of all nations.” Over the past year, the Lord has worked through His Word and through your involvement to make more disciples. Here are some numbers which show the Lord is at work in and through each of you: In 2017 the Lord celebrated 14 baptisms, 4 adult confirmations, 10 youth confirmations, and 2 more additions to membership. In addition to those whom the Lord has called to be part of our local congregation, the Lord has also granted us the opportunity to support missionaries around the world, including Indonesia and Mexico. For making this possible, I want to say thank you, and, well done, good and faithful servants!

What’s next? We keep our eyes open. The call to make disciples of all nations does not end! As a community of faith we need to know that the mission of the Lord is not done! There are still countless people who have not yet come to know of the saving work of Jesus Christ. And so our call continues.

The Lord has blessed each of us with gifts and He did it on purpose. You have a purpose, you have abilities, and Christ’s kingdom needs them all! Never underestimate what the Lord is doing through you, for He created you with intention and purpose. You are His, and I know He will accomplish His will through you.

Over the next year, the Natural Church Development (NCD) team and I want to help enable each of you to use the skills which God gave to you in order to spread His name through all nations. In order to do this, we as a congregation will be committing ourselves to focus on three areas through which God will work. As a congregation we will proclaim Christ through: • Prayer – Lifting up all things and people to the

Lord in prayer. We pray for those who do not have faith, we pray for those in trials, we pray for those in need. The Lord works through prayer to touch all nations.

• Care – We will seek to care for others. Showering our community, our neighbors, and the world with the love of Christ! Through that care the nations will be touched.

• Share – Whether through words or actions God’s Word has effect, and you are His mouthpiece. As a congregation we share the story of Christ, for He is the one whom we proclaim and He DOES change the nations.

In conclusion, we praise God for all that He has done and look forward to all He will do for the nations in the year before us.

Your brother in Christ, ><>Pastor Ben

Sunday Morning Bible Classes Classes continuing throughout March John: The Gospel of Light and Life Many of the Gospel readings in the next few months will be from the Gospel of John. With this in mind, one of the 2 Sunday morning adult Bible classes focuses upon John. The class utilizes video content with Adam Hamilton, as well as discussion and study on some of the major themes of John. Themes include “the Word made flesh” and “The Miraculous Signs” and “The I AM Sayings of Jesus.” This class meets in the Auditorium and is led by Lyle Heggemeier. So You’re a Christian – Why? In this class participants discuss reasons to be a Christian. The goal of the course is to better equip participants to be able to share their faith with un-churched people, fitting with the Church's theme of Prayer, Share, and Care. Jannai will tailor the second half of the course to the reasons that participants express strong interest in learning more about. This class will meet in the Music Room.

Monday Evening Bible Class Feasts of the Bible This Monday evening class will begin studying this new topic on March 5, and will meet March 5, 12, & 19 and then again on April 9, 16, & 23. We’ll study and learn about the Sabbath, Passover, Pentecost, Trumpets, Tabernacles, and the Day of Atonement. We’ll learn about the symbolism of each feast, how Jesus is the fulfillment of it, and what it says to us TODAY! We meet each Monday evening from 7:00-8:15. This class is led by Lyle Heggemeier and meets in the Community Room. This class is open to all!

Passover Meal (Seder) Faith Lutheran Church will host a Passover Meal on Tuesday, March 27, beginning at 6:00. This Passover is comparable to the Passover that Jesus celebrated with His disciples at the Last Supper. We will enjoy lamb and unleavened bread, as well as bitter herbs, haroseth, and wine. You’ll learn about the symbolism of the Passover but will also receive a full meal, followed by Holy Communion – just like Jesus did with the disciples. The evening is fun, but also worshipful! You MUST sign up if you intend to attend so that we have enough food and a place for you to sit. The cost for the meal is $7 per person with a maximum of $20 per family. Please sign up in the Concourse or call the church office if you intend to attend! Volunteers Needed – In order to have the Passover meal, volunteers are needed to do a number of different jobs. We need help in preparing the soup, getting food ready that day, setting up the room, serving the meal, and cleaning up after the meal is over. If you can assist with any of these jobs, please signup in the Concourse, call the church office (381-3970), or indicate you can help on your Connection Card.

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross

Some hymnologists call When I Survey the Wondrous Cross by Isaac Watts the finest hymn in the English language. This hymn can be found in almost all mainline Christian hymnals and is treasured by many traditions. It has also been reworked as a praise song by Chris Tomlin, who added a chorus to Watts’ traditional hymn text. Isaac Watts (1674-1748) is frequently referred to as the “Father of English Hymnody.” He sought to personalize and enrich the slow, ponderous Psalm texts that were being used for song in English churches during this time. He wanted to give the congregations texts that would be captivatingly strong statements of their Christian faith. Even from an early age, Watts was a quick learner and amazingly mastered the Latin, Greek, French, and Hebrew languages all by the time he was thirteen. He was also writing good poetry when he was quite young. Through his lifetime, he composed more than 600 hymns, which include well known titles such as O God, Our Help in Ages Past, Joy to the World, Nearer My God to Thee, and My Faith Looks Up to Thee, to name a few. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross is an important hymn for Christian worship at all times of the year, but especially during Lent. This gripping text points to the dying Savior in a vivid and memorable way. It is a very personal and moving expression of gratitude for the amazing love that Christ showed for us on the cross. As the last verse points out, we are confronted by the necessity of a response when we see the horror of the cross and the love that moved Christ to go through this for us. On March 4, we will sing the traditional version of When I Survey the Wondrous Cross at the 8:30 service, and the praise team will lead the 10:45 worshippers in Tomlin’s rendition of this famous hymn, The Wonderful Cross. I invite you to use the text for your personal devotion during this Lenten season.

When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the death of Christ, my God; All the vain things that charm me most – I sacrifice them to His blood.

See, from His head, His hands, His feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down;

Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small: Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all

February Meeting Report Annerose Eberhardt came with two shawls she made. Carol Letky brought in three shawls, Sue Hutchings, one shawl. Good work, ladies! Marie Ferner brought in a donation to our treasury. Sue Hutchings presented the Treasurer’s Report. Lots of knitting, crocheting, and chatting was done and ideas were shared. A possible display in April was discussed. The meeting closed with the blessing of our new shawls. Our next meeting will be Monday, March 2, 7:00 p.m. at church in Room 204. All are welcome. Knit or Crochet a Prayer Shawl If you would like to help us by knitting or crocheting a shawl but can’t make our meetings, patterns are available so that you can knit or crochet at home. Thursday Night Men’s Bible Study Join us as we continue to study the book of James to connect the Bible with our secular and spiritual lives. While our studies will be geared towards working-age men, all interested men are welcome to join. Our hour-long meetings will be March 1 and 15 starting at 6:45 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in the Community Room. See Jannai Shields or Larry Johnson for more information.

Dorcas Circle February Meeting Report The Dorcas Circle had a productive meeting in February. Karen Wright sent in 10 hats and frames she had made. Lois Jacob sent in favors to be assembled. Liane Bartsch brought in ribbon for our hearts. Doris Florance came with blankets and capes she had serged, along with four dresses. Laurie Ebbecke brought in four walker bags she made. Sue Hutchings came with lots of hats she had cut out. Our help is not needed for Mary Cariola’s move. The hospital has enough hats for now so we will wait until next month to complete more hats. During the meeting, favors were made for St. Patrick’s Day. Shirt savers and walker bags were cut out. Five walker bags, eight shirt savers and five pillows were completed. Ten grieving packages were assembled. Lois Jacob will deliver the favors to Woodside Manor. Laurie Ebbecke will take the pillows and walker bags to St. John’s. Jackie Johnson will take the grieving packages to Rochester General Hospital. Doris Florance will deliver the shirt savers to Mary Cariola. Our next meeting will be Thursday, March 8, 11:30 a.m. at church in Room 204. All are welcome. Bring your lunch and join us for work and fellowship. Any questions call Doris Florance.

L.I.F.T. EVENT FOR MARCH

Movie Night & St. Patrick’s Day Dinner All are invited to go see “I Can Only Imagine,” on Saturday, March 17, for the 4:10 pm showing at the Regal Henrietta Stadium 18, 525 Marketplace Drive, Rochester. Based on the incredible true-life story that inspired the beloved, chart-topping song, I Can Only Imagine, a song that brings ultimate hope to so many, often in the midst of life's most challenging moments. Amazingly, the song was written in mere minutes by MercyMe lead singer Bart Millard. In reality, those lyrics took a lifetime to craft. Starring Dennis Quaid and Cloris Leachman. Tickets are $11/adult or $8.50/seniors. After the movie, we’re invited to the Cook’s residence, 20 County Clare Crescent, Fairport, for a St. Patrick’s Day themed dinner. Please sign up at the Information Center for the movie and dinner by March 11. Contact info: Patsy Cook, 585-377-3439.
