Providing an overview of key aspects of accounting in MFIs

This toolkit offers practical t raining in basic financial management and ratio analysis for MFIs. It provides an opportunityfor participants to reflect on their institutions financial management systems, policies and procedures. It also provides a

standard for good implementation of accounting systems, documentation, processes and basic controls.

The toolkit helps develop clarity on the need of different financial statements. It helps develop skills to analyze s tatements

and calculate different ratios to give a correct picture of the financial health of the organization. This is done through

supporting documents, diagrammatic representations and exercises. The toolkit includes:

Accounting overview;

Financial statements and operational report;

Basic financial ratios - Key areas to measure: profitability and sustainability, asset and liability management,

portfolio quality, efficiency and productivity, basic financial ratio analysis.

It is important for MFIs to have adequate accounting systems and management information systems. Without reliable

and consistently prepared reports, ratio analysis is not reliable or useful.
