Michelangelo sculpted many fine statues from white marble.Make a soap sculpture of a turtle!

How to sculpt a turtle from soap:

1) First carve away layers of soap to get a good turtle shape. 2) Carve small areas at a time and be careful around the legs and head. (Be aware long narrow parts tend to break off.)3) Carve fine lines for details such as the shell, the claws and the face.

• Refer to the diagrams and pictures on the activity sheet for a rough idea of the shape that is needed for the turtle.

• Make a model of the turtle you would like to carve using modeling clay. This will help you become familiar with the shape you will need to sculpt.

• Use slow, small movements to scrape away thin layers of soap.

• Carve details carefully using fine lines.Be careful when working with knives- small non-serrated knives are best.

A potato peeler can be a safe alternative to a knife and works well on soap. Use the

pointy end to gouge out details.

Try not to waste reources-Soap shavings can be dissolved in water

and used in a soap dispenser!
