Organization of my work to date.

TRANSCRIPT

  • Architecture should have little to do with problem solving - rather it should create desirable conditions and opportunities hitherto thought impossible.

    -Cedric Price

My portfolio represents my ideas and how I approach work. My projects areall works in progress not complete, but paused because of deadlines. In this portfolio you will

see my passion for working with partners as I believe my best work is done with others and not alone. The power of a drawing to express is also, something I strive to do. I hope to continue to grow and develop my abilities to express my

passion! If you want to contact me:

    -Location: Barconoleta, Barcelona,Spain

-Premise: Develop/Design a urban feature through operative maps

-Strategy: Relocate musicians to change site interaction based on mapping

Partner: Corina Mundry - focus on final presentation and graphics

  • Site PlanIn this urban project my partner and I took our developed mapping and, we reversed these points to create new points. These new points were located where there was minimal interaction. In these new points we developed zones for our musical intervention to be placed (Below). Creating a stage area that can be used for the local market as well as entertainment platforms. Through designing this the existing interaction, is changed and now bringing the people out towards the water. The musical interventions also ranged in size in order to allow for the larger intervention to exist in the least used point.

The project started developing through a basic mapping technique looking at the site through a specified lens. The lens we focused on was, circulation through quantity. Stepping through iterations into specific placement and forms. The mapping was a large part of the organization concept and project.

    Site Plan

  • Looking at precedents we decided to explore the materiality of the site to further define our new stages, using concrete to express stage and market circulation, in contrast to the brick used for the seating (Below). My partner further enhanced the site with the use of trees to enhance the new circulation (Right). As you can see there is a new complex circulation that takes the users not just to the waters edge, but past to a new experience one that people do not have. Designing this completely reverses how the site is used. Our design envisions a great new site that no longer is a dead zone.

    Site Section

    Materiality

In our sections we wanted to express programmatically how we organized the site and how the stages helped create our zones. Leading to a place for the musical interventions. In the second section we expressed the minimal impact on the site for maximum effect. My partner and I wanted to change the circulation without taking away the amazing view of the ocean and other attractions.

    -Location: Charlotte,NC

-Premise: Research/Develop a framework to help design the new library

-Strategy: The library as a user centered space, with the need for dynamic and static spaces.

    8

  • Charlotte Mecklenberg Library was organized around my conceptual framework and site strategies. I used those to organize the entrance to the building as well as my floor plans. The moving stack highlighted in red, is a feature I added to help create and abolish space allowing for maximum user possibility.

The left stack is organized in such a way to allow for the user needs, much like the fun palace of Cedric Price. While the right stack is very straightforward and organized by a simple circulation through the building. The usage of double or triple height space allowed the people moving around to see the floors and allow for an understanding of the separation of the two sides and which each is.

These diagrams express my strategies of organization of the dynamic and static pieces. Orienting the pieces by existing business correlating to the level of dynamic activity. I also separated the two bars which challenged the two ideas to separate and join within the structure. Finally, developing a moving stack within the structure to emulate my approach.

On the right is also the final render of the main market structure in the center of the site. As seen in the sections background.

  • Urban EngagementJunior Year, Fall 2013,Professor Garland

    -Location: Clemson, Anderson,SC

-Premise: Design an Intervention to re-engage an area of campus

-Strategy: Maximize site area and use through engagement of existing conditions.

Partner: Joshua Douglas- Focus on 3-D model and site sketches

    14

  • Our intervention was developed on a secondary path with little to no usage as we gathered from watching our site. This area was extremely under used. My partner and I designed a wall system to connect the site to its upper half. As well as using the existing wall to our advantage and its jagged edges. The strategy we developed came from three existing conditions, The wall, the two sides of the site, and the lack of drainage available from the top side of the site (On the left). Modeling our intervention (Below) we created a walking platform and seating area. The water flowing and trees waving in the wind help create a serine area for students to make their destination on a busy day for a peaceful moment. The models express the simple design and how we plan to make use of the currently unused wall area.

    Wall Site Drainage

We developed in this project were based on the needs we saw for the site. The first was taking advantage of the existing wall. Second to connect the two halves of the site, and the third was to create drainage for the water to escape. All three of these problems or conditions we developed into strengths or features of our site.

    Site Development

    Concept

  • A secondary problem that we wanted to resolve on the site had to do with erosion. Along with our system we added to it by proposing a natural filter built in the ground in specified points to prevent rain from ruining the upper site (See Drawing upper right). Creating channels for the water to flow into a storage pond for further usage by the school. In the future ,the site can open up and grow as we foresee an area to relax for students in this gently tucked away site. Creating a nice calm area.

  • In this project our concept focused on the ideal healing process for a victim of domestic violence. Using the program that was listed to us we focused our design through stages helping the person move through their healing process with the use of lighting and designed processional organization. We focused on distances and the balance between private and public to help create the best overall environment when thinking about the victims.

In this project we developed a complete outreach center for domestic violence victims. We had to fully develop a large site area that would allow for those who come to the facilities the best environment to grow and move forward in life. We tried to organize our site based on this idea. We created a flow that would bridge the valley as a person would experience a physical change through our design as they internally healed and moved on in time. The site topography was a challenge, but we decided to take advantage of it rather, then change it.

The buildings followed the cycle of the domestic violence centers creating a healing procession. Our hope was to create an easy flow. I believe through our site organization we created a sufficient environment for people to move on. The separation between the center and the housing is a purposeful attempt to allow for people to move on. Domestic violence as a whole is a horrible thing that cant be understood by mere research, but we hope with projects like this that we can educate ourselves in hopes of preventing and if necessary helping victims recover.

These sections help better explain the site organization. The top helps show how we approached our extra element creating a gallery that is oriented to capture the existing light in a non-harsh way. The bottom section shows how we used the site to create the processional idea and move you along to help our design to clearly delineate the steps and create bridges to connect our architecture. The plansto the right are a continuation of the sections expression our organization.

    Sections, Plans

  • With this project (to the left) weve given plans and a piece of sheet metal and a rectangular piece of metal stock and told to create a dustpan from these using various bending and cutting techniques along with pop rivets to secure the handle. This was helpful in understanding the challenges of going from plan to object. I struggled with some of my angles and found ways to help create crisp bends.

In my studio we had a fragment portion (to the right) that called for us to create an object that was representative of our conceptual framework. The balance between a dynamic and static ideal separated by a moveable stack is the concept of which I attempted to show. Using woodwork and various drills and saws, I was able to accomplish this.

This was a wall mounted can crusher (Below) of which we cut, drilled, welded, and fastened together all from various metal stock from square pieces to tubing. This was the most challenging project as the quality of you work showed. If the measurements were off then the product would not work properly.

FabricationThis year I decided to approach things in a more construction based way and try to understand the realization of objects. I found the process is different then the idea of it and through making I can achieve a greater level of understanding and ability to communicate ideas.
