I like the camera shot they used as they are able to edit in the interviewee’s name on the side next to her.

I also liked how they interviewed her in front of a brick wall as this causing now distractions forcing the viewer to solely watch her.

Page 4: Mica and smaanatha rap

I liked how they put in a voiceover while showing pictures which were relevant to what they were talking about.

Page 5: Mica and smaanatha rap

I liked how they spoke about the sailors who got tattoos of places they had been to. This interested me because I learnt something I never knew before.

This inspired me because in my documentary I want to be able to teach people about things that they never knew about tattoos.

I like how the artists tattoo designs are in the background, reminds us that they are in a tattoo shop.

Page 8: Mica and smaanatha rap

I like how they changed the camera shots while

interviewing him, they used a mid shot then a

close up shot.

Page 9: Mica and smaanatha rap

I like the effect they used to slowly scroll up to eventually show the whole tattoo.

Tattoo Books

Interesting approach. Talks about culture and how long the tradition had been around, why and images of the art work.

Page 13: Mica and smaanatha rap

The books feature an extensive variety of popular subjects including fantasy, Celtic, tribal, pagan, floral, language, history, gothic, and mythical.

The new Hotel Erwin in Venice commissioned Tattoo artist Norm of Spotlight Tattoo in Los Angeles to paint some art at their front wall. This YouTube video shows a a mix of Graffiti and tattooing as the graffiti artist is a also a tattooist who views both as artistic and creative. He said that the hotel asked him to graffiti a wall to add an 'urban image to their hotel'.

Establishing shot of Hotel Erwin in Venice

NOTES;Formal italic font that has connotations of a conventional and reserved hotel

NOTES;Second shot is informal and demonstrates the process of graffiti art.

Spray cans, unfinished art and the large wall set the scene. It is unconventional as graffiti is something stereotypically done at night or in the dark. This is because it is usually portrayed as negative.

Page 17: Mica and smaanatha rap

The artist talks about being hired. He doesn’t talk directly to the camera which I think is

effective, as it shows the progress he makes whilst the

audience watch and listen.

The next shot is a pan of multiple spray cans multi colours.

Close up of the wall with voice over describing process.

Conventions

FROM THE VIDEO I HAVE LEARNED:

• Not all establishments have a negative view on graffiti which is

interesting.• Many people who do this, multi

task doing graffiti, tattooing and commercial art.

The art behind vandalism Documentary

This 10 minute documentary is based on different interviews about the graffiti scene in Singapore.I think looking at graffiti in different countries is interesting to compare it to that in the UK.

Page 27: Mica and smaanatha rap
Page 28: Mica and smaanatha rap

What i like about the documentary; • 1) The credit were very creative and artistic,

made to look like the names were spray painted, with non diegetic sound of a spray can spaying the paint.

• I think it was very effective and would like to do something similar.

After title sequence, voice-over begins immediately. 2) There is an establishing shot that showed Singapore. It was at night and included a voice over that set the scene. The voice over described the wall as canvas' and there were clips of mysterious figures spraying graffiti on the walls.

Page 29: Mica and smaanatha rap

• 3) the whole documentary was interviews and i do not think that was effective as it was boring. Also, all the interviewee's had the same view on graffiti, so it was biased and didn't create an argument.

Low angle shot of graffiti in progree to make it more intersting. Good to use this idea of varying shots.

Page 30: Mica and smaanatha rap

SHOTS used in the interviewsFRONT; Close up shot.

Side/close up shot

High angle shot and a different back ground that has relevance to documentary.

Long shot and a group interview

Page 31: Mica and smaanatha rap

Improved if;

• Different age and sexes were being interviewed.

• Various ages• Different opinions on the overall topic.

font of the chapter names in the graffiti documentary.

BBC documentary; My Story

Establishing shot’s , using panning, of the places the interviews have taken place. Voice over describing the process – people from around britain had to write in and how the 15 finalists were chosen.

Then an overall descripion of each episode and what will be covered. program.

Page 34: Mica and smaanatha rap

First clip in the program is shot on a street with one presenter describing

the upcoming events. Background noise is low and his is loud.

Location may have been used to represent the evrday people he will

interview.

Non diegetic sond, ‘This is ‘My Story’’ and slow zoom to show full title

Location is Camden Town. Could use a similar technique.

Page 35: Mica and smaanatha rap

First interviewee has non diagetic soft music as she describes a sensitive topic.

Shows different location as she describes her ordeal

Close up video footage

Silent video with voice-over continuing interview.

Page 36: Mica and smaanatha rap

Over the shoulder shot of interviewer and interviewee

Back to the interviewr to keep it interesting. Soft non diegetic music and different location.

Backgound music slowly increases tempo as the intervewee talks of conclusion to their story.

Ends with clips from next episode

Page 37: Mica and smaanatha rap

Idea’s• Appropriate music to individual themes. E.g. soft,

slower tempo when talking about meaningful tattoo’s and fast faced upbeat non diagetic sound when talking about culture tattoo’s with flashing images to make it look interesting and exciting.

• Ending of episode had a good explanation of the next episode that had flashing images and enticed the audience.

• Range of shots and angles for various themes.
