§mi„ mito %m®$ BUSINESS DIRECTORY. " NOT QtTITB THE CHEESE." A S M t O N G SKETCH!. From thoSpirit of tlloUfipeB. Ou' oritoring my room a few evenings since; I found'Vol. lDtb. of the•" Spirit, 1 " fresh.from the bindovy. Opening it, I commenced oarelessly turning' over the leaves, when nry eyes fell on tho Bentonco above, " Not quite tho cheese." Now whut the douce ,gavo l-iso to that, saying 1 thought I, ns.the words recalled to memory a scene whiph was rather a Sftmu* impression on a seusitivo or- gan, I did not easy forget it. Some years since r was employed as a ware- house clerk in a large shipping-house in New Or- leans, and while in that capacity, I came across something flint wasn't " quite the cheese," as the sequel will testify. One day a vessel camo in, consigned to the house, having on board a large lot of cheeso from New York ; during the voyage, souio of them liad be- come damaged by bilge-water, consequently the owners refused to receive it, as it was not, as the bills of lading said, " Delivered in good order and well conditioned," they were.therefore sent to the consignees of the ship, to be stored until the case could bo adjusted. I discovered a few days af- terward, that as to perfume, they were decidedly too fragrant to remain in tho warohouso in Juno, and reported the saino to tho concern, from whom I received orders to have them overhauled, and send all that were passable to Beard & Oailioun'a miction mart, to be disposodof for the bpueht of the underwriters, and the rest to tho swamp. I got a gang of black boys to work ou thorn, and whou they stirred 'em up, " Bo the bones of Moll Kolly's quart mug ! but tho smell was illigant in- tirejy." I kept a rospoctful distnnce, believe mo, for strong nigger and strong choose, ou a hot June day, just'bangs all common essences, including a cortai varmint wo read about. "Presently the boys turned out an immense fel- low about 3 footC " across the stump," from which tho box had rotted off; in the centre a space of about ten ino'nos was very much decayed, and ap- peared to be about the consistency of mush, of a bluish tint, which was caused by tho bilge wator. Tho-boys had just set it up_ on its edge, on a bale of gunny bags, whou T noticed over the way a big darkey from Charleston, S. 0., who was notorious for his butting propensities, having givou moat of tho niggers in the vicinity a taste of his qutdity in thet line, I hnd seen him and anothor fellow tho night provious. practising ; they would stand, one on each side of a hydrant some ten yards iTistant, and run at each other with thoir heads lowered and ctnppiug their hands on the hydrant, they would butt like veteran ranis. A thought struck me that I might euro him of his bragging and butting, end have some sport al- so, so I told the boys to Itoep dark, (which, by the way, caused very little exertion to them, all nig- gers,) and I called " Old Jake" over. " Thoy toll mo you are a great fellow for but- ting, Jake J" "lissome Mnssa, das a fac—I dono butt de wool 'tiroly orfob old Peto's head las night, and Massa Nichols was gwino to gib me goss ! I kin jias hang de head orf ob any nigger in dose parts, myself—I kin!" " Well Jake, I've got a little job in that lino for you when you haven't anything olso to do." " I'so ou ban for all dom kin ob jobs, mysef—I IB." " Well, you seo that large cheese back thore 1" " I does dat! I docs, myself." " Now if you can butt a dont in it, you shall havoit." " Golly, Massa ! you foolin' dis nigger.!" "No, I'm not, Jake—just try me." "Wot! you gib mo de hull ob dat ohoeso'fl butta dentin urn V "Yes." " Do Lor! I'll bust 'em wide open, I will, my- sef. Jess stan back dar, you Orleans niggers, and c!ar do track for 01c Souf Oarliua, case I'so a com- iu, myself—I is!" And Old Jake started back some fifty feet, and wont at it at a good quick run, nud tho next in- stant I heard a dull, heavy sound, a kind of squish, and Old Jake's head disappeared from sight, with tho top just visible on the other side, as ho arose with his now-fashioned neck-lace, the soft rotten choose oozing down nil around him as it settlod down, so that just his eyes were visible. From tho centro of it Jake's voico was scarcely audible, and half smothered, as he vainly triod to romove the immcnBO cheose. " O-o-o-o or de Lor ! Mas—took um orf! O-o-o, brcss d' Lor! Lif um up ! Gor a mighty, I Mennwhilo I was nearly dead niysulfj having laid back on n cotton bale, holding myself togoth- or to kocp from hursting, whilo tho boys stood uround Old Jake, pnyiugliim oil". " De Lor, how de nigger's brcft" smell! you dooan't clean you teeth Old Juko !" " I say you didn't make moro dan four times Oat )ian, oia hoss-" " Well you is a .nasty nigger, das a fac !" " Well, you is do biggisl hue of Welsh Eabbit, you ia." " Whar you git your hair grease ?" and thus the hoyB run on Uld .Ifiko—now half Bmothuriul—un- til I took compassion ou him, and told them to tako it olf. Jake didn't stay to claim his prize, but put out a growling— "Gor a mity ! I dono got solo dat timo ! I'so a caso of Yaller-feber—I ia, mysef!" Old Juke WUB never known to do any morobnt- in{j in that vicinity after that, and_I am still of the opinion that it was " Not quite Ihc cheese." "I always like to buy peaches of you," said Mr. Potts toabigover-grown vendor, lately, " because thoy look so nice and clean." " Yes," replies the merchant, " it's meself as takes the pains wid 'em; and haven't I worn tho jacket all'mo in wipin 'em wid it, to be sure ? and didn't I lave nlF tobacky beknsc the juice 'nd givo a bad comploxion to 'em ? " Well,"' said Mr. I'otts, in a tremulous tone, "Idon't know as I caro aboiit any how,— you can keep the cent." Mr. I'otts felt hurt. NEWSPAPER ANECDOTE.—A hard case of a sub- scriber, to whom the publishers of the Mirror had sent tho weekly paper on credit, was at hist drop- pedfrom tho list—all ordinary measures of col- lection having failed. Our agent was encounter- ed tho other day by the delinquent's wife, who •wrathfully insisted that " she knew what was newspaper law—that she did. Tho Editor was hound to send the paper until all arrearages arc paid.—[Sandusky Mirror. » ' —- Dr. B. was walking down Fifth street on the 1st day of April, when he saw two boys on the aide- walk, apparently searching for something. One of the beys remarked just as ho reached them, " Well, five dollars is worth hunting after. ' So tho doctor stopped, and searched a while. Final- ly ho got tired, and said to the boys, '• Have you lost a live dollar bill J" <• No, sir," said tliey, "but wo didn't kuow but wo should find one;" The doctor sloped. " Preaching the gospel is a glorious occupation," Said a colored pastor recently, " but please to re- lnembor, my hearers, that clergymen's families want shirts, chnmpngueiced, venison, pork and beims, and other luxuries, while thoir wives can't get along without dresses, bonnets and pelisses ; thereforo don't drop in no bad pennies and chaws of terbaoker when Onto brings round tho suear- bowl for your contribution." A CLEVER HIT.—We learn from a Parisian cor- respondent of the Tribune, that a clever Barcasm upon pugilistic legislators has been latoly put forth in Paris. It is a caricature, in which two Chimney sWoop, nroJroprM.n.oa -Grfuiug «Utrido of tho Chamber ol Deputies. A policeman inter- poses, saying : " No fighting in the streels, you blackguards ! Go insido tho Chamber, if Vou wiah to do that." J LAWYERS, THOMAS C. CHITTElldEN, Jf, Attorney niidOpiinsolor stCLaw. A S M t O N G S K E T C H ! .

From thoSpirit of tlloUfipeB. Ou' oritoring my room a few evenings since; I

found'Vol. lDtb. of the • " Spirit,1" fresh.from the bindovy. Opening it, I commenced oarelessly turning' over the leaves, when nry eyes fell on tho Bentonco above, " Not quite tho cheese." Now whut the douce ,gavo l-iso to that, saying 1 thought I, ns.the words recalled to memory a scene whiph was rather a Sftmu* impression on a seusitivo organ, I did not easy forget it.

Some years since r was employed as a warehouse clerk in a large shipping-house in New Orleans, and while in that capacity, I came across something flint wasn't " quite the cheese," as the sequel will testify.

One day a vessel camo in, consigned to the house, having on board a large lot of cheeso from New York ; during the voyage, souio of them liad become damaged by bilge-water, consequently the owners refused to receive it, as it was not, as the bills of lading said, " Delivered in good order and well conditioned," they were.therefore sent to the consignees of the ship, to be stored until the case could bo adjusted. I discovered a few days afterward, that as to perfume, they were decidedly too fragrant to remain in tho warohouso in Juno, and reported the saino to tho concern, from whom I received orders to have them overhauled, and send all that were passable to Beard & Oailioun'a miction mart, to be disposodof for the bpueht of the underwriters, and the rest to tho swamp.

I got a gang of black boys to work ou thorn, and whou they stirred 'em up, " Bo the bones of Moll Kolly's quart mug ! but tho smell was illigant in-tirejy." I kept a rospoctful distnnce, believe mo, for strong nigger and strong choose, ou a hot June day, just'bangs all common essences, including a cortai varmint wo read about.

"Presently the boys turned out an immense fellow about 3 footC " across the stump," from which tho box had rotted off; in the centre a space of about ten ino'nos was very much decayed, and appeared to be about the consistency of mush, of a bluish tint, which was caused by tho bilge wator.

A thought struck me that I might euro him of his bragging and butting, end have some sport also, so I told the boys to Itoep dark, (which, by the way, caused very little exertion to them, all niggers,) and I called " Old Jake" over.

" Thoy toll mo you are a great fellow for butting, Jake J"

" l i s s o m e Mnssa, das a fac—I dono butt de wool 'tiroly o r fob old Peto's head las night, and Massa Nichols was gwino to gib me goss ! I kin jias hang de head orf ob any nigger in dose parts, myself—I k in!"

" Well Jake, I've got a little job in that lino for you when you haven't anything olso to do."

" I'so ou ban for all dom kin ob jobs, mysef—I IB ."

" Well, you seo that large cheese back thore 1" " I does dat! I docs, myself." " Now if you can butt a dont in it, you shall

havoit ." " Golly, Massa ! you foolin' dis nigger.!" "No, I'm not, Jake—just try me." " W o t ! you gib mo de hull ob dat ohoeso'f l

butta dentin urn V "Yes ." " Do Lor! I'll bust 'em wide open, I will, my

sef. Jess stan back dar, you Orleans niggers, and c!ar do track for 01c Souf Oarliua, case I'so a com-iu, myself—I i s ! "

And Old Jake started back some fifty feet, and wont at it at a good quick run, nud tho next instant I heard a dull, heavy sound, a kind of squish, and Old Jake's head disappeared from sight, with tho top just visible on the other side, as ho arose with his now-fashioned neck-lace, the soft rotten choose oozing down nil around him as it settlod down, so that just his eyes were visible. From tho centro of it Jake's voico was scarcely audible, and half smothered, as he vainly triod to romove the immcnBO cheose.

" O-o-o-o or de Lor ! Mas—took um orf! O-o-o, brcss d' Lor! Lif um up ! Gor a mighty, I

Mennwhilo I was nearly dead niysulfj having laid back on n cotton bale, holding myself togoth-or to kocp from hursting, whilo tho boys stood uround Old Jake, pnyiugliim oil".

" De Lor, how de nigger's brcft" smell! you dooan't clean you teeth Old Juko !"

" I say you didn't make moro dan four times Oat )ian, o ia h o s s - "

" Well you is a .nasty nigger, das a fac !" " Well, you is do biggisl hue of Welsh Eabbit,

you ia." " Whar you git your hair grease ?" and thus the

hoyB r u n on U l d .Ifiko—now half Bmothuriul—until I took compass ion ou him, and told t h e m to tako it olf. Jake didn't stay to claim his prize, but put out a growling—

"Gor a mity ! I dono got solo dat timo ! I'so a caso of Yaller-feber—I ia, mysef!"

Old Juke WUB never known to do any morobnt-in{j in that vicinity after that, and_I am still of the opinion that it was " Not quite Ihc cheese."

" I always like to buy peaches of you," said Mr. Potts toabigover-grown vendor, lately, " because thoy look so nice and clean." " Yes," replies the merchant, " it 's meself as takes the pains wid 'em; and haven't I worn tho jacket all'mo in wipin 'em wid it, to be sure ? and didn't I lave nlF tobacky beknsc the juice 'nd givo a bad comploxion to 'em ? " Well,"' said Mr. I'otts, in a tremulous tone, " I d o n ' t know as I caro aboiit any how,— you can keep the cent." Mr. I'otts felt hurt.

NEWSPAPER ANECDOTE.—A hard case of a subscriber, to whom the publishers of the Mirror had sent tho weekly paper on credit, was at hist drop-pedfrom tho list—all ordinary measures of collection having failed. Our agent was encountered tho other day by the delinquent's wife, who •wrathfully insisted that " she knew what was newspaper law—that she did. Tho Editor was hound to send the paper until all arrearages arc paid.—[Sandusky Mirror. » ' —-

Dr. B. was walking down Fifth street on the 1st day of April, when he saw two boys on the aide-walk, apparently searching for something. One of the beys remarked just as ho reached them, " Well, five dollars is worth hunting after. ' So tho doctor stopped, and searched a while. Finally ho got tired, and said to the boys, '• Have you lost a live dollar bill J" <• No, sir," said tliey, "but wo didn't kuow but wo should find one;" The doctor sloped.

" Preaching the gospel is a glorious occupation," Said a colored pastor recently, " but please to re-lnembor, my hearers, that clergymen's families want shirts, chnmpngueiced, venison, pork and beims, and other luxuries, while thoir wives can't get along without dresses, bonnets and pelisses ; thereforo don't drop in no bad pennies and chaws of terbaoker when Onto brings round tho suear-bowl for your contribution."

A CLEVER HIT.—We learn from a Parisian correspondent of the Tribune, that a clever Barcasm upon pugilistic legislators has been latoly put forth in Paris. I t is a caricature, in which two Chimney s W o o p , n r o J r o p r M . n . o a -Grfuiug «Utrido of tho C h a m b e r ol Depu t i e s .
