FALL 2010 I nside the walls o Methodist University Hospital , a connection is being built. Construction is nearly complete on a revolutionary center where aith and health combine to help in the healing o patients, amilies and communities. Located in the heart o the hospital, 16,000 square eet are being renovated to create the Center o Excellence in Faith and Health . “This will be a space that is ocused on the heart o Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare ’s mis- sion – the unconditional care and concern or our patients and amilies,” said Kevin Spiegel , CEO o Methodist University Hospital . The $2.5 million project will provide patients’ amilies with a com- ortable and comorting place to relax, get spiritual care and learn how to take care o the patient once at home. “When amilies are here because o a loved one, they should be cared or and they should be learning how best to care or their loved one when they return ho me, ” said Gary Gunderson, D.Min. , M.Div., senior vice president o Health and Welare Ministries at Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare. Kelli Owens knows frst-hand how much this space is needed. She called Methodist University Hospital’s ICU waiting room home or more than two weeks in 2008 while her husband, Mike, was being treated or an aneurysm and a blood clot. “I was at the ho spital 13 plus hours a day . I greeted visitors, spent time with ri ends and amily, and helped my c hildren study or tests,” said Kelli. “I had two heating pads attached to extension cords, so I stayed as close to an electrical outlet as I could get. “To state the obvious, i you are in that area, it is due to a major crisis in your lie. The stress level is already high. It drains the mind, body and spirit.  At a time when you are making major, potentially lie-altering decisions, you are doing it in rough circumstances.”  The Center o Excellence in Faith and Health will include a Family Care Center . This new area will include resources to provide or and assist with the various needs o patients’ amilies. The Family Care Center will include a small chapel or all aiths, an outdoor terrace and a dark room or those who want to sleep. The center also eatures rooms or patient, amily and physician consulta- tions and an education center where amilies can either get in-person, one-on-one sessions about how to take care o their patient at home or they can research or themselves on computers. “During the time Mike was in the hospital, I had to meet with his business partners, complete the paperwork to fle or disability, and meet with doctors and representatives rom various rehab acilities to discuss the next phase o Mi ke’ s recovery, ” said Kelli. “O ten, these meeting took place wherever we could fnd an open spot. The thought and vision put into this new space will make a trying situation more bearable.” In addition to the Family Care Center, the Kemmons Wilson Family Foundation Innovation Studio is another integral part o the Center o Excellence in Faith and Health. Outftted with state-o-the-art technology, the Innovation Studio will welcome volunteers rom local congre- gations or trainings to help patient amilies with spiritual care, end-o-lie care, mental health care, frst aid and home care in seven-week courses. “It seems as though every detail and conve- nience was considered and planned,” said Kelli. “It will improve the amily’s experience, which, in turn, benefts their l oved one.” “This space demonstrates our belie that more can always be done not only to treat people but also to impact the quality o lie or those in our community,” said Gunderson. “By healing patients and amilies, we’re ultimately making a dierence in the overall health and wellness o the commu- nity,” said Dr. Gunderson.
