Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus

(MRSA)

Information provided by the

Pickaway County General Health District

WELCOME

OBJECTIVES

Determine the prevalence of MRSA infections in Pickaway County Schools

Investigate which athletic program sectors are affected (ex. – football, wrestling, etc.)

Develop protocol(s)

IMPORTANT FACTS

Staphylococcus aureus (Staph)

• Common bacteria

• Acquired mainly through direct contact (individuals and objects)

• Asymptomatic carriers

IMPORTANT FACTS Cont.

Staphylococcus aureus (Staph)

• Found in nose, armpit, groin, and other similar areas

• Causes soft tissue infections such as boils and impetigo

IMPORTANT FACTS Cont.

Staphylococcus aureus (Staph)

• Can cause pneumonia and bloodstream infections

• Treatable with antibiotics

METHICILLIN-RESISTANT STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS (MRSA)

MRSA

• Cannot be treated with common penicillin-like antibiotics

• In the past confined to hospitals, nursing homes, long-term care facilities

METHICILLIN-RESISTANT STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS (MRSA)MRSA

• Most common form - skin infections such as abscesses and boils

• Usually starts out as small bump resembling pimple or spider bite, which becomes redder and often develops pus drainage

METHICILLIN-RESISTANT STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS (MRSA)

MRSA

• Sometimes gets into bloodstream and travels to internal body parts causing more serious infections

MRSA Cont.

CA-MRSA = Community-Associated MRSA

• Movement into the community

• Affecting athletes (esp. contact sports)

METHICILLIN-RESISTANT STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS (MRSA)

MRSA

• According to CDC, there appears to be at least three different strains of staph that can cause CA-MRSA infections in U.S.

ARE YOU SURE IT’S ONLY ASPIDER BITE?

If you think you have a spider bite,

it might actually be a bacterial

infection that needs medical

attention.

Did you see the spider?

If in doubt, check it out.
