Function of metadata
• Whether in the traditional context or in the Internet context, the key purpose of metadata is to facilitate and improve the retrieval of information.
• We have learnt to measure information retrieval in terms of recall and precision. If we miss a lot of relevant information, we have poor recall. If we get flooded by a lot of irrelevant information, we have poor precision.
Metadata ICA
• [Geo-spatial] metadata are data that describe the content, data definition and structural representation, extent (both geographic and temporal), spatial reference, quality, availability, status and administration of a geographic dataset.

Townplans in The Netherlands• The resulting table, because of its length, does not give a good
general outline of the situation. Therefor we decided to construct
• two maps, one for the coverage of the municipalities and one for the coverage of publishers. It took some time before Simone
• Meijer, our trainee, had converted an administrative map of The Netherlands from Atlas Gis to Aldus Freehand 3.1. The next
• stage took some days -amongst others a conversion to Paint Shop Pro to create .GIF files- but the resulting choropleth and
• distribution maps satisfied our expectations bibliography. Ref 12
