Merzak Allouache’s award-winning drama raises the question: can we ever recover from our mistakes? In the late 1990s, the Algerian govern-ment made an effort to end years of terrorism by offering jihadists amnesty. Rachid (Nabil Asli) accepts this offer and runs away from his fundamentalist compatriots to register as a ‘repentant’. Though settling back into society is not as easy as he hoped, Rachid begins to develop a semblance of a normal life. The Speech Project is the result of a four year venture by musician Gerry Diver, who scoured musical archives, and travelled Ireland conduct-ing interviews with musicians, searching for something unique in their voice. Diver realised that the nuances of everyday speech captured in these voice recordings could be incorporated into his musical composi-tions to create an incomparable listening experience. Voices fade in and out of the slow refrain of Diver’s accordion, creating work that is incred-ibly honest in its musicality as well as being heartbreakingly beautiful. With inspiration and words taken from such seminal Irish musicians as Shane MacGowan, Christy Moore and Damien Dempsey, The Speech Project is a musical masterpiece. Diver will perform these compositions live at Mermaid in what promises to be a fascinating night of music.

Brendan Bowyer

The legendary Brendan Bowyer and his band bring this show of pure nostalgia to Mermaid. Brendan, today, has the same high energy he was renowned for in the exciting days of the Royal Show Band and the Big Eight and for this concert he will be joined on stage by his daughter Aisling as special guest. His classic repertoire includes ‘The Hucklebuck’ which was the biggest of his six No. 1 hits and went plati-num internationally. Brendan is a master performer whose showman-ship and music has endured beautifully throughout the years; a must for all true showband fans.

tigran hamasyan Armenian pianist Tigran Hamasyan is a jazz prodigy, a true virtuoso with the natural skill and insight that most musicians strive for. His burgeoning appeal stretches far beyond the jazz sphere, a tribute to his genuine musicality and brilliance. His most recent studio album, A Fable, shows Tigran’s authentic musicianship as the 24 year old goes back to his roots, and pays homage to Armenian folk in an album he himself describes as ‘a little more like a poetic storytelling’. Blending the otherworldly with the familiar and tracing accents of the Orient into traditional Armenian folk, Tigran’s place among the most talented jazz composers of his generation is well earned.

The Unusual History of Ether is the song writing partnership of Irish singer-songwriter Rebecca Collins and Danish guitarist Mikkel Ploug, featuring Jeppe Skovbakke on bass and Jeppe Gram on drums. Collins and Ploug met several years ago when they played together at the Dub-lin Fringe Festival and immediately forged a musical connection. Frances Black When Nanci Griffith called Frances Black ‘the sweetest voice of Ireland’, she was paying tribute to one of Ireland’s best-loved and most enduring artists, with a string of best-selling albums, awards and other accolades under her belt. In her beginnings Frances performed a fusion of contemporary and traditional Irish music with her family’s band, The Black Family. In pursuing her solo career, Frances has honed the pure vocal tone and energetic stage presence which has won her the adoration of audiences around the world. Life is an awfully big adventure for two adolescent boys and their newfound friend in The Giants. Brothers Seth and Zak are left in their late grandfather’s house, waiting in vain for their mother. To make some money they rent out the house to a local drug-dealer. Lanners’ third feature film deftly negotiates between heartbreak and hilarity in a pica-resque story notable for its boisterous good-spirits and engaging central performances. A refreshing take on some classical story elements, the film should appeal to audiences of all ages.

Cold and darkness surrounded the little seaside town. With the rolling black mass of the sea on one side and the looming shadows of the mountains on the other, it seemed as if winter would last forever in Bray.Yet all was not lost. In the very heart of the town, a tiny, yellow light could be seen. Its warmth and glow beckoned people to it and through them the message started to spread. The storyteller had arrived! As they gathered he began to weave tales and fables from the darkness, and as their excitement and fervour grew so too did the fire. It grew and grew until the whole town was illuminated and its people warmed. As the story finished, the fire began to dim, but the light remained. Lightness is a group exhibition that includes video and sculpture installations and brings together the work of four artists who are con-cerned with the struggle to find pattern and meaning in the seemingly random, strange and mysterious world we live in. The selected artists share a study of perception, form and our understanding of the world, sometimes constructing a parallel world of sensory perception. Often working with familiar materials and unravelling everyday phenomenon in an attempt to understand the world in which we live, these works playfully collide or reveal a fragility and precariousness - sometimes hinting at the sublime or awe inspiring - underlying our everyday natural and constructed environments.In a loose or from a sideways position, the ideas for the exhibition come to us from Milan Kundera’s novel The Unbearable Lightness of Being, where Milan Kundera explores a light and heaviness that he associates with outlooks and ways of being in the world. Eternal return or Amor fati is used to describe an outlook in which one sees everything that happens in one’s life, including suffering and loss, as character building. In a counter point to this view, Kundera argues that we only have the opportunity to try one path, and hence we have no point of comparison or meaning. Instead, those characters who are heavy cannot accept this unbearable lightness of being, and seek to attach a meaning and weight to what they consider important in life. The artists in this exhibition are selected for their curiosity and wonder in things, and in the world around them - an outlook which they bring in their various practices to their art-making.‘We can never know what to want, because, living only one life, we can neither compare it with our previous lives nor perfect it in our lives to come’ Milan Kundera

intact deserts / desiertos intactos new work By mexican artist alFonso lopez monreal

Mexican artist Alfonso Lopez Monreal responds to his daily interaction with the desert close to his home in Zacatecas, its flora and fauna, as well as consideration of the traces left behind by pre-Hispanic native civilisations. This new body of work can be regarded as a metaphor for the people still fighting for the preservation of their local environment and identity with the image of the warrior used to depict this struggle. Well-known primarily as a master printmaker, the work presented in Mermaid has been produced using watercolours, local pigments and acrylics on paper. While Monreal is now resident in his place of birth, he lived in Ireland from 1982 to 2000 when he was elected to Aosdana. His work is held in collections in the Ulster Museum, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the Irish Museum of Modern Art. He has also been recognised in his homeland, having received the Goya Medal at the 10th Ibero-American Biennial in 1996. Wicklow printmakers Carmel Benson and Grainne Cuffe will also present work in parallel with Intact Deserts.

You will find Mermaid Arts Centre in the civic offices complex at the top of Bray Main Street, before Bank of Ireland.

To get to Mermaid from the N11 Northbound, you exit at Bray South, where you’ll see signs for Bray leading to the Killarney Road. You can follow this road to Main Street.

Then, to get to Mermaid from the N11 Southbound, you exit at Bray North, following signs for Bray onto Dublin Road. Cross over the Dargle Bridge and you will be on Main Street.

The DART/train station is a 10 minute walk from Mermaid.

Film cluB inFormation

Free underground car-parking is available for Mermaid patrons for the duration of shows in the evenings and at weekends. This is located under the Civic Offices complex beside Mermaid. A private pay and display car park is available week-days and is located in the grounds of the complex.

We have full disabled access, please let box office know of any special requirements when booking.

Some of the films we screen here at Mermaid have not been certified by the Irish Censorship Office. In order to screen these films we need to operate as a film club. This nominal fee has been integrated into the ticket price for all CLUB films. Everyone is welcome to attend CLUB films.
