Alhamdulillah, all praises to Allah by Whose Will everything happens, we were able to organize a very successful Being ME women’s conference held on Saturday, 30th June at the MATRADE

Exhibition & Convention Centre, Kuala Lumpur.

It was a sold out event and more than 2,000 sisters benefitting from the whole day experience which consisted of talks by various speakers around the world like Yasmin Mogahed, Myriam Francois-Cerrah and local speakers such as Jamilah Samian, Dr. Fadila Grine and Haslina Ali. Not to mention our very own Sheikh Tawfique Chowdhury and Sheikh Yahya Ibrahim, Sheikh Daood Butt and brother Kamal Uddin from the UK who performed a few beautiful nasheeds.

The event started off with a beautiful Qur’an recitation from a world-reknowned qariah, Sharifah Khasif followed by a touching and enlightening performance by the staff and students of ADNI Islamic School.

The Main Hall was packed from the beginning with sister Yasmin started off with an beautiful talk on empowering women. Everyone was glued to their seats watching and listening to sister Yasmin as she gives her first talk here in Kuala Lumpur.

Apart from the fantastic lectures in the Main Hall, we also had Parallel Sessions where more lectures and workshops were held. The speakers shared their knowledge and experience with the attendees with vibrant panel discussions and Q&A sessions that kept the audience engaged. The Parallel Sessions hall was also packed throughout the day, especially Sheikh Daood’s “Marriage Corner: ME & My Other Half”. Sisters had to sit on the stairs and close to the stage as the entire hall was packed!

The Being ME conference also brought something unique for the attendees: “This is ME: The Muslimah Attire Show”. The aim of the Muslimah Attire Show is to educate and empower the masses about the proper Muslimah dress code derived from the Qur’an and Sunnah. It showcased a collection of clothes for mahram and non-mahram that a Muslimah can wear to identify herself as a Believer and to please Allah.

In the evening, Sheikh Tawfique Chowdhury made an exciting announcement with the launch of a new project that is initiated here in Kuala Lumpur: Charity Right, a programme that aims to rescue surplus food, clothing, medical supplies and redistribute to the needy. The response was well received Alhamdulillah with donations still coming in. During the event, we received pledges of more than RM 110 000, with close to RM 60 000 of those pledges recovered so far.

We would like to thank everyone who attended the conference, the sponsors by whose support we couldn’t have pulled off a great event and the magnificent effort of the volunteers, who tirelessly worked day and night to ensure the event was a smashing success, bi’idznillah. We look forward to your participation next year, and this year’s blockbuster Twins of Faith in December!

Conference

Thank You!You haven’t truly thanked Allah until you

have thanked the people and we would like to express our deepest gratitude and

appreciation to everyone who have given their support for Being ME! Without you, the

event would not have been a big success!JazakumAllah khair!

The King of Abyssinia summoned the Muslims to respond. Jafar bin Abi Talib then spoke his most famous words:

“O King, we were a people in a state of ignorance and immorality, worshipping idols and eating the flesh of dead animals, committing all sorts of abomination and shameful deeds,

breaking the ties of kinship, treating guests badly, and the strong among us exploited the weak. We remained in this state until Allah sent us a Prophet, one of our own people, whose lineage, truthfulness, trustworthiness, and integrity were well-known to us.

He called us to worship Allah alone, and to renounce the stones and the idols which we and our ancestors used to worship besides Allah. He commanded us to speak the truth, to honor our promises, to be kind to our relations, to be helpful to our neighbors, to cease all forbidden acts, to abstain from bloodshed, to avoid obscenities and false witness, and not to appropriate an orphan’s property nor slander chaste women. He ordered us to worship Allah alone and not to associate anything with Him, to uphold Salat, to give Zakat, and fast in the month of Ramadan. We believed in him and what he brought to us from Allah, and we follow him in what he has asked us to do and we keep away from what he forbade us from.

Thereupon, O King, our people attacked us, imposed the severest punishment on us, to make us renounce our religion and take us back to the old immorality and the worship of idols. They oppressed us, made life intolerable for us, and obstructed us from observing our religion. So we left for your country, choosing you before anyone else, desiring your protection and hoping to live in justice and in peace in your midst.”

When the Quraish failed to provide a counter argument, the King and his courtiers welcomed the Muslims to practice their religion in their country and offer them the protection they needed.

We look at our communities today and I think it would be fair to presume that such a claim about Islam and Muslims to those in authority would be hard to defend. As Muslims we are failing to add value to the communities we live in.

When the Muslims fled to Abyssinia during the time of the Prophet alayhi wa-salatu wa-salam, the Quraish came after them and prized their way into the court of the King to make their case to take the Muslims back to Mecca to be persecuted.

Building Communities Upon Knowledge and Action

Allah has blessed us with a way of life that is pure and just, yet we are known for all the opposites of what Jafar mentioned above. If one of us claimed to describe Muslims in such a manner today we would be ridiculed and given example after example of how we are NOT what it says on the tin. The Quraish could not do that because the Muslims practiced what they preached.

The knowledge we learn, in an AlKauthar classroom or from a presenter on Ramadan TV or a speaker at a Being ME conference, should not be empty words. Knowledge itself mandates action that accompanies it, and we want everyone associated with Mercy Mission and its projects to be known for it. ‘Excellence in Knowledge & Action’ is not a marketing slogan, but a driver for everything we do.

The Prophet sallalahu alayhi wasalaam said: “The foot of the servant will not move on the day of judgement until he is asked about four things; on his life and how he spent it; on his knowledge and what he did for it; on his wealth and where he earned it and how he spent it; and on his body and how he utilized it.” [Tirmithi]

Mercy Mission envisions Muslims as being the agents of change in their communities, to benefit humanity. Through our projects and services we want to enable Muslim communities to be Pious, Self-Sufficient, Confident and Selfless. We believe that if we can do this, the world will be a better place for everyone.

Bienvenue & Selamat Datang!AlKauthar Institute Reaches Major Milestone with Paris & Jakarta

www.mercymission.my8

Alhamdulilah, we have experienced many amazing milestones for Mercy Mission in recent times, including opening in 3 Muslim countries (Malaysia, Bangladesh and Indonesia). This year, we have just passed 50,000 students who have attended AlKauthar courses in one of the 8 countries around the world!

I am pleased to announce another ground-breaking milestone Alhamdulillah. AlKauthar Institute just

expanded its horizons to two countries; France and Indonesia!

From Malaysia to IndonesiaIt was just 9 months ago at the A to Z of Love and Mercy Course in Penang, Malaysia, that a few brothers approached Sajid Hussain, Mercy Mission Manager for Malaysia, to see if together they could help take AlKauthar to Indonesia.Truly Allah is the Best of all Planners. Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world with a population of 204,000,000, with 80% of its inhabitants identifying themselves as Muslim. As the brothers in Penang explained however, the need for those to represent Islam in its true light in Indonesia is dire.As discussions developed with Brothers Rizky, Aji, and Sister

Melita, we soon discovered that the young, working professionals were desperate for an education provider of the Deen like AlKauthar Institute, and that the community out there were itching for an AlKauthar experience. During a free lecture tour introducing the AlKauthar Institute to the Indonesian community, Sheikh Tawfique was met with a very warm reception mashaAllah, and we were able to announce AlKauthar’s first weekend course taking place in Indonesia: Mercy to the Worlds – Seerah of the Makkah phase, on 28th of April 2012 by Sheikh Tawfique. We ask Allah to bless our efforts and help us to help the Muslim community to increase our striving for excellence in knowledge and action. Ameen.

The French ConnectionFor the very first time, AlKauthar Institute will insha’Allah be providing courses in a second language: French. AlKauthar

successfully launched in Paris, France in June.We have worked with our team in France for over a year to find qualified tutors of the AlKauthar Institute standard to provide AlKauthar courses in French. The team started with a conference on May 20th to launch AlKauthar and  their first course. Mercy to the Worlds, the first ever course in AlKauthar Paris, took place on June 16-17th 2012 taught by Sheikh Chakil Omarjee, Alhadulillah.May Allah ‘azza wa jal reward the entire French team and the instructors, ameen!I would like to thank the entire team, tutors, supporters and all of you who have attended an  AlKauthar Institute course and helped us grow over the past 6 years.

Akhter RaoufGeneral Manager - AlKauthar Institute

www.mercymission.my 9

AlKauthar is always looking for capable and dynamic instructors to conduct its various tertiary level Islamic education courses. So far we have 19 excellent instructors on our portfolio

alhamdulillah. However none of them are based in South East Asia. With Kuala Lumpur being one of the busiest AlKauthar cities, Jakarta recently launched and more cities in the pipeline insha Allah, the need kept growing.

So the AlKauthar Country Manager for Malaysia, Sajid Hussain, put out a call for a capable instructor who’s based in this region to come on board. Alhamdulillah, Sheikh Daood answered that call.

Sheikh Daood Butt was born and raised in Montreal, Canada. He has always had a desire to learn and teach Islam. Following secondary studies, he obtained a degree in Automotive Technology and was nominated amongst Canada’s Top Graduates of 2002. During this time, he studied with local Imams and was hired as an Imam and Qur’an instructor at a local mosque. He went on to study at the Islamic University of Madinah

for seven years, during which he completed a Diploma in Arabic Language followed by a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theology and Islamic Da’wah from the Faculty of Da’wah and Usool Ad-Deen in 2010. Upon returning to Montreal he was involved in various Da’wah activities including giving lectures and khutbahs in English, French, and Arabic. He has always been especially interested in youth related programs and is quick to develop a rapport with them. With an eagerness to continue learning Islam, Sheikh Daood is currently pursuing a Master of Arts Degree in Islamic and Other Civilizations at the International Islamic University in Malaysia. Sheikh Daood hates wasting time and being late, and is keen on attendance so much so that upon completing his Arabic Diploma he was awarded a certificate for not having been late a single class. He maintains a high level of respect for his teachers, and always remembers fine details about the people he meets. He is a jack of all trades, and enjoys cars, perfume, sunglasses, and most of all, playing with his daughter!

Introducing: Sheikh Daood Butt

AlKauthar Welcomes a New Instructor

www.mercymission.my10

Sheikh, who have been the role models of your life?

To specify a role model other than our beloved Prophet Muhammad would not do him justice. Personally I don’t have any specific role models, but I have always admired certain characteristics of individuals who had an influence upon my life. Apart from wanting to be the best I could for my parents and according to their example, while growing up it was Sheikh Fida Bukhari. After that I would say Sheikh Ahmad Rashid Ar-Ruhaily, Sheikh Ataa Soofi, Sheikh Fahd Ad-Duwayaan, and many others.

What drives you to keep pursuing knowledge and studying the Deen?

Honestly, the more I study and learn, the less I feel I know! Every time I attend a lecture I learn many new things and feel overwhelmed with how much is available and how much harder I have to work to please Allah. Also, admiring the Shuyukh, how they carry themselves and deal with others is always encouraging!

What made you to choose to come on board with AlKauthar as an instructor?

I have always wanted to travel the world and teach the little knowledge I gained so far in my life. AlKauthar makes that come true, allowing me to help others not only to learn, but to provide them with creative ways of implement what is taught.

Apart from learning and teaching, what are your other passions in life?

Well, since at the end of every day I have to return to my family, the most important thing for me is making sure

I have a happy home! Spending time with my wife and daughter is important to me. When there is harmony at home I can achieve so much more. I also enjoy helping people whether I have to roll up my sleeves, or by simply lending them an ear…or two.

Any favourite pastimes or hobbies?

Pfff…I don’t have time for hobbies, but I admire cars more than the average person, simply because I understand how they work. If a person built it, I can fix it! As for sports, sadly they haven’t been part of my life for some years now. But if I can head to the gym and lift weights regularly, that would be awesome. While in Madinah, some of the brothers nicknamed me “Biceps.”

You’ve been here for some time now Alhamdulillah. What do you love most about

Malaysia?

Definitely not durian! The good manners and welcoming attitude of the Malaysian people is unique. Of course the sandy beaches and very affordable vacation getaways along with amazingly cheap AirAsia flights makes Malaysia even better! Oh, and I must say I love being able to eat Halaal food from almost everywhere.

Your first course will be the A-Z of Love and Mercy in Jakarta. Why should students attend?

That’s easy; they should attend because they don’t have a choice. I mean, come on, almost all of them will get married, right?! The course deals with marriage, and for those who are married, they need to know how to deal with their spouse so it doesn’t result in divorce. But, if divorce is needed, they will learn how to make it have a positive impact on them rather than negative, resulting in happy children, inshaa Allah!

Get to Know Sheikh Daood!

www.mercymission.my 11

Alhamdulillah AlKauthar Kuala Lumpur hosted a fantastic A-Z of Love & Mercy course with Sheikh Bilal Ismail over the weekend in MAHSA University College in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia! Close to 330 students attended this very eye-opening and brilliant

course going over the fiqh and the rules and regulation of the Shari’ah pertaining marriage and divorce.

Sheikh Bilal is always well received in any course that he teaches and this was no exception. In one particular feedback form: “I am not a Muslim, but after this course, I would definitely consider inshaAllah”. May Allah guide this person to Islam. Ameen.

At the end of the course we had a Marriage Facilitation Ceremony where brothers and sisters who are looking to get married are given the platform to get to know each other in a Halal environment with the assistance of facilitators and Sheikh Bilal. The ceremony went really well Alhamdulillah, with one couple getting married this year insha Allah!

We hope the course provided the understanding needed for someone to get married and avoid getting divorced insha Allah.

Mumtaz!

As we helped her out of the car she looked to one of our volunteers and said, “After every difficulty, things will eventually get better. This is Allah’s promise.” The sense joy and relief was obvious for all of us to see as we walked her through the garden area to her new room where she will stay from now on insha’Allah with her new family with us at the Madinah Centre.

Sister Ezah converted to Islam in 1994 but concealed her Faith from her family to avoid their opposition. Years went by and the desire to proclaim her Islam and being able to live life freely as Muslimah eventually gave her the courage to inform her family members. She soon found herself being cut off by her family and in a room away from a place she used to call home as she began a very difficult period in her life alone with no one but strangers to rely on. She was also diagnosed with a medical condition that has now kept her on a wheelchair.

When we first met sister Ezah, we found her in desperate living conditions with little or no attention given. Alhamdulillah with the grace and mercy of the Most Merciful, we were able to secure a place for her with us at the Madinah centre. “This is the first time I really felt the Blessing of Allah. I can now forgive everyone who

have wronged and forsaken me, and be at peace with what I gave them to eat and drink. I no longer feel the hatred inside and I am until today still forgiving them,” she told us in a recent conversation. When we asked her what the thing she wants most is, she replied. “I wish that every single person in the whole world to embrace this beautiful religion with a genuine heart.”

The residents of the Madinah Centre will have a great companion living with them now and all praises is to Allah. Even though her movement is limited to wear her wheelchair takes her, you can never find anyone more filled with joy and high spirits in the centre than our beloved sister.

What is the Madinah Centre?

Ramadan TV is a unique proposition designed specifically for the Muslim viewer in the blessed month of Ramadan.

Ramadan TV was the first television channel dedicated to the holy month of Ramadan in the UK, broadcasting 24 hours a day. With a focus on responding to the multi-faceted communities

within the Ummah, the channel seeks to bring Muslims together in the month of unity. The media plays an integral part of our lives today. It can even be argued that it is the most powerful tool of influence in recent times. Whilst television has been used against us with the countless Islamophobic references and programmes, we must in turn ensure that we are the flag bearers of our own identity and not lose sight of the fact that our own community can benefit from such a tool too.

Over the last 2 years, the channel has had phenomenal success with thousands of households in the UK having tuned in, and hundreds of thousands more watching Ramadan TV broadcasting live online around the world. Fusing quality English language religious programming

with fun and interesting live shows ensured a quality family viewing experience was achieved. This year we are eager to go raise the bar, and enable millions of viewers to benefit from Ramadan TV. The channel takes enormous pride in showcasing great opportunities for Muslims to get involved with and benefit their communities. As the official channel of Mercy Mission, Muslim viewers can again expect to learn about Islam and also how they can implement the teachings of the faith in their localities. Encouraging everyone to maximise their Ramadan is without a doubt one of the key aims of Ramadan TV and we hope that the channel will go a long way towards bringing viewers closer to Allah insha’Allah.

Broadcasting went live on Tuesday 10th July on channel 843. We are also streaming live on www.ramadan.tv. Please do spread the word and let all of your family, friends and community know. By directing one person to the channel you could potentially be rewarded for their Ramadan too! Please do continue to assist us in this effort, as it is your support after the grace of Allah that has got us this far.

Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world. Over 200 million Muslims live here. The country came to Islam following the Da’wah of traders that would pass through the thousands

of islands, which make up this country. Unfortunately, there are high levels of poverty, tribal and ritualistic beliefs obstructing people from worshipping Allah according to His guidance and a new phenomenon seeping through the veil of the unconscious; the country being the target of missionaries who aspire to transform the country into a Muslim minority nation by the year 2035.

These two realities make for a bizarre climate in this Island nation where two million people leave Islam every year. However it is a situation which has forced Mercy Mission to take the mantle and immerse the organisation in working to turn the tide and revive the Islamic spirit in a people who have seemingly fallen out of love with Islam. To this end, Mercy Mission decided to visit the region and establish a programme to respond to the tidal waves against Islam within one generation. Azim Kidwai (Chief Business Development Officer) and Mohammad Waqas (Ramadan TV Producer) went to Jakarta to better understand the situation on the ground and form strategic partnerships to allow Mercy Mission to be an agent for positive change in the country and the wider region.

The trip was highly beneficial and allowed the formation of a number of partnerships with the largest Islamic organisations in Java and the agreement for a Twins of Faith conference in Indonesia in January 2013. This new venture is one of the most important endeavours Mercy Mission has ever taken on, and as such requires every single reader to make a special supplication that Allah accepts us and aids us as the people that return the call to Allah in this beautiful country.

On a Mercy MissionLet there arise out of you a group of people inviting to all that is good, enjoining Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do and forbidding polytheism and disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden. And it is they who are the successful (3:104).
