woodturning. Even though when I was younger, I wouldonly set foot in front of a lathe a couple times a year, Ialways had a strong appreciation for woodturning. However, today my motivation to continue woodturningis that there are endless possibilities and it is not reallywell known in the average art community so it is fun, asan art student, to bring my passion of woodturning tothe table. When you look at your pieces, what do you see? I see an ever-evolving desire to experiment. I have somany ideas, but havecome to a point in my life where Iactually have the time to explore and really dig deeper.I see an aspiring artist who is passionate aboutwoodturning but who wants to explore the moresculptural side as well as work with a variety ofmaterials, not just wood.

Alive: This is the first piece Kailee ever turned from books, inspired by a high school art assignment.

Who or what was your greatest teacher? Again, this goes back to my dad (Trent Bosch). Henever forced me to turn, but instead introduced me towhat he enjoyed and it turns out I like it too! Fromteaching me the basics of woodturning, tounderstanding the creative process, he has helped mebecome the turner/artist I am today. And he still is agreat person to go to when I am not quite sure how toapproach my next project! What was your happiest turning moment? I really enjoyed getting to teach a couple of youthclasses at the 2017 AAW Symposium in Kansas Citythis past summer. I am looking forward to my secondyear of teaching in Portland! Seeing young turners likeme interested in learning was inspiring and I hope atleast a few of them continue turning.

and advice!

AAW 2017 Symposium Kansas City: Bosch giving a lesson tothe next generation of woodturners.

Has being a part of AAW affected your life andwork? How?I have been attending AAW Symposiums since I wasborn. Growing up and being immersed in thatcommunity each summer has inspired me to start andcontinue woodturning. I am currently pursuing a BFA inSculpture from Colorado State University because Iam passionate about turning and art. So yes, I wouldsay the AAW and woodturning have affected my life ina very positive manner.

What is your favorite project or piece? Most of the time my most recent piece is my favorite,so in that case Simplici(tea) is my current favorite. Ihad worked on a couple of other teapots before thispiece, and I feel like this was by far the mostsuccessful. The way that the book pages lined up tocreate a sense of grain that draws the viewer to thespout really intrigued me. I don't really know how thepages of glued book are going to look until I turn them, but this one was a nice surprise.

automatically cuts pieceswith a high degree ofaccuracy and that needs nofine-tuning. In his article, "ANovel Way to CutSegments," from the August2013 issue of AmericanWoodturner, he shares histechniques. Click here for adirect link to the article (youmust already be logged intothe AAW website).

Develop a routine to helpmake your cuts and glueprocess repeatable andaccurate. For example, photo 1 (below) shows a jigfor a chop saw that ensuresa repeatable cut. Everypiece will be cut to the exactdimensions each time.Photo 2 (below) shows ameasuring tool that helpsmake sure that the piecesare glued at the samecircumference for each layer.~ Tom Lohman

Favorite piece turned by another artist? Instead of specific piece, I just in general really likeJason Schneider's cardboard work. I think it is just funto see what other materials can be put on the lathe andsculpted. (http://jasonschneiderfurniture.com )
