About UsDean Philpot

Dean lives in Maidenhead and has always had a passion for the environment. During his childhood he always wanted to be a vet, now he has studied Marine & Freshwater Biology and Tropical Coastal Management he still desires to obtain practical veterinary skills. His drive comes from the desire to encourage people to recognise the importance of our environment.

Meghan Holmwood

Meg lives in Reading and has always had an inclination to work with animals. She is currently studying Animal Management at college with the aspiration to become a vet. Her enthusiasm for African conservation work is fuelled by her grandfathers work with Rhino and through watching nature documentaries.

The Big 5 – which could sadly be gone by 2050 !

The Projects – Overview

We will be joining vets for 6 weeks in the Limpopo province in the Northern-most part of South Africa.

The Projects – Placement 1Shimongwe African Wildlife Vets

Join the veterinary team at a number of conservation projects and on many large game reserves in the area. The veterinary experience provides exciting hands on work with a diverse range of species, and the opportunity to work with Africa’s most majestic wildlife.

1. Game reserve veterinary team 2. General medical work

3. Veterinary management at 2 breeding sites

The vet also operates a small clinic for domestic and livestock work, so we will also have the opportunity to gain insight into a rural South African veterinary clinic.

The Projects – Placement 2Shimongwe Wildlife Veterinary Experience

Work with a wildlife vet in South Africa joining the day-to-day activities of experienced wildlife vets in the field, treating and handling wildlife.

1. Veterinary procedures in the field and in the clinic.

2. Work with game capture and relocation teams immobilising animals in the field using medicine and darts .

3. Translocation of animals – moving them to safer areas.

4. Medical work on sick and injured wildlife.

5. Disease control – making sure animals are healthy!

Our Campaign - Aims

1. To raise above and beyond the minimum to undertake the project, so we can literally write the veterinary practice a cheque to support their incredible work.

2. To make our cause public. We wish our cause to snowball starting locally, possibly nationally and beyond. We want the younger generation to realise the importance of our environment, and for local businesses to join us in our movement.

3. To form a “Meg Dean African Foundation”. Our greatest aspiration is to create a legacy in the form of resources for future veterinary students, volunteers and interns.

“Help Us Keep The Big 5 Alive!”

Our Campaign – The MoneyACE Placement costs:

The allocation of funds does vary from one project to the next but this chart gives you a good idea of the average allocation of the money that you pay us to arrange your placement. Because we are independent, we are unbiased and are able to support and promote projects that have the greatest need.

Any Donations we receive:

100% handed to the African Wildlife Vets**We will interview the vets and ask them where money would be best spent
