Nowadays contemporary architecture is evolving fast. Does this evoluƟon improve the quality of the space? TradiƟonally architecture had the knowledge of comfort. The Spanish Persiana is an instrument inherit from the arab culture. The Japanese Sudare is inherit from the chinese culture. Both systems are sƟll popular and valuable. Looking through modern architecture we can see how these elements are expressed and evolve. The aim of this workshop is to re-nd out the value of the Persiana while looking for an evoluƟon and new ways of use and expression . How can these blinds improve Barcelona city blocks? What can we learn form the Japanese Sudare? These workshop has a second ediƟon that will be held in 2018 at Tokyo and is part of a series of workshops that will connect our architecture tradiƟons with the japanese ones. Prominent Features of the workshop/ skills developed This is a crash workshop on an especic instrument which appears, whith its diferrences, both in Spain an Japan. We will discuss about technique, history and design. The parƟcipants will complete a fast and fresh exercise on how to improve Barcelona city blocks by rethinking the Persiana. Biographies Tutors: Carlos Alonso He is an Associate Professor at Barcelona School of Architecture (EtsaB) and visiƟng professor at the Polytechnic FoundaƟon of Catalonia (Fundació UPC) and Barcelona School of Design (ESDesign), who received M.Arch in architecture, energy and environment and a Phd from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC). In parallel to his academic acƟviƟes he is a pracƟcing architect and researcher in Environmental and Sustainable Design in Architecture with a st ay at the AssociaƟon School of Architecture (AA).

Takeshi Yamamura, He received M.Arch (2009) and PhD. (2012) from Waseda University dept. of Architecture, Tokyo. A er working for Dominique Perrault Architecture in Paris, he returns to Tokyo in 2015 to teach architectural design at Waseda University, Yamamura lab. In parallel to his academic ac vi es, he collaborates as editorial advisor in architecture publica ons specializing in architecture theory. In 2016 establishes YamamuraSanzLaviña Architects, ac vely involved in a variety of architectural projects spanning different scales and typologies.

Jury: Carlos Alonso & Takeshi YamamuraNatalia Sanz is a prac sing architect at Kengo Kuma and Associates Tokyo since 2008 and founder of YamamuraSanzLavina Architects.Cossima Cornado is a Phd proffesor at Barcelona School of Architecture (EtsaB) department of technology, specialized in rehabilita on and Architectural restora on.
