DEAR NORTHWESTERN RADIO LISTENER

Imagine: You have just arrived breathless with Peter and John as they poke their heads into Jesus’ tomb to see if it’s really empty as Mary Magdalene has told them. Or, you are standing beside one of Paul’s associates as you see him chained in a Roman dungeon, sharing his faith with a soldier. You don’t have to simply dream about being in Jerusalem or Rome—you can actually join me and other friends from Northwestern’s radio stations on a Mediterranean cruise visiting key sites in the New Testament then walk where Jesus walked in Israel. Experience the Bible coming to life

as never before. Watch how God deepens your faith. Someone has said when you read the Bible at home you see events unfold in black and white, but when you visit Israel and other New Testament places you experience events in flat-screen-TV colors! Join us on the Mediterranean cruise and Israel tour May 18 – June 1, 2013 and let the vibrant colors of the Bible change you forever.

Dr. Paul VirtsSenior Vice President for Media

Come join us as we tour the world of the New Testament! We’ll start in Rome, where Paul finished his missionary journeys, and work our way back to Jesus and Galilee. Along the way we’ll see all of the most important places in the story of the gospel, including Rome, Athens, Corinth, Ephesus, Nazareth, Capernaum, Jerusalem, and more—and in one amazing trip! In addition, you will enjoy a Mediterranean cruise at the very best time of the year to be doing so.

We will share about each place we visit while we talk about the text—studying as we go. This will be a pilgrimage journey like those of old, when Jesus and his family went to the Temple to meet with God. You, too, will meet with God, in the Holy Land and in the other lands of the New Testament. And you will never be the same afterward.

To travel to the places of the New Testament is to make the Bible come to life. You will never read the Gospels or the letters of Paul the same way again. When you read of Nazareth or Capernaum, the Sea of Galilee, the Jordan and Jerusalem, it will all play again across the screen on your mind—because you will have been there. You will now know the world of Jesus, and to know that world is to grow closer to the Savior who walked its paths and called us as his people.

Come and join us!

EXTRAORDINARY PORTS OF CALL

MESSINA (SICILY), ITALY

Just three miles off the coast of southern Italy’s mainland is the port town of Messina on the island of Sicily. This bustling town has its roots in Greek mythology, but the majority of the city has been rebuilt or refurbished within the last 100 years—giving it an interesting blend of new and old architectural styles.

EPHESUS (KUSADASI), TURKEY

A city created by the Ionians in the 11th century B.C. and later expanded by the Romans. Now considered one of the grandest reconstructed sites in the ancient world, the region also hosted the likes of Cleopatra, Mark Antony, Mary (the mother of Jesus) and John the Apostle.

CHANIA (SOUDA), CRETE, GREECE

Chania is the second largest city of Crete, and one of the most beautiful. Chania is the site of the ancient Minoan settlement the Greeks called Cydonia (Kydonia), which was mentioned in Virgil’s Aeneid. The site has been continuously inhabited from Neolithic times-at least 5000 years.

ROME (CIVITAVECCHIA), ITALY

The gateway to all the magnificence of the ancient city of Rome. Whether it’s the Forum, the Sistine Chapel, the Pantheon or St. Peter’s Basilica that sparks your interest and intellect, Rome is home to a lifetime’s worth of historical, architectural and spiritual sites.

DISEMBARKING TO A VARIETY OF WARM MEDITERRANEAN BEACHES AND CITIES, EACH FILLED WITH A UNIQUE HISTORY AND LIFE

ATHENS (PIRAEUS), GREECE

Piraeus is the main port of Athens, the biggest in Greece, and one of the most important in the Mediterranean Sea. Home of the Acropolis, Hadrian’s Arch and The Ancient Agora, Athens holds many of the major symbolic landmarks of ancient Greece and is within walking distance of majestic views of the Saronic Gulf.

TOUR OF EPHESUSNow considered one of the grandest reconstructed sites from the ancient times, Ephesus is one of the best-preserved archeological sites in the world. On our private tour, we’ll first visit the Great Theater, which dates back to the Hellenistic period and is where Paul preached to the Ephesians. We’ll visit a brand new excavation of covered terrace homes before continuing along the Marble Road, a sacred walkway linking the theater and the Celsus Library with Hadrian’s Temple, showcasing the finest technology, engineering, art and culture of the Roman Empire during the time when the early Christian church was just beginning to spread the gospel. The church at Ephesus was one of the major churches in Asia Minor. Paul spent at least two full years in Ephesus (Acts 19:10)—more than with any other church in Asia Minor. Ephesus was the center of ministry for the Apostle John, who used Ephesus as the base for spreading the gospel to at least six other cities in the region (Revelation 1-3), and who was likely buried there. According to church tradition, Mary (Jesus’ mother) lived there with John.

INCLUDED MEDITERRANEAN SHORE EXCURSIONS

TOUR OF ATHENS & CORINTHDrive through the city of Athens, home to over half the Greek population, on your way to the Parthenon temple, dedicated to the city’s patron goddess Athena. Along the winding path to the Acropolis you’ll pass the Temple of the Wingless Victory and Mars Hill, where Paul preached to the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers (Acts 17). Next you’ll travel to the ancient city of Corinth to view the 6th century BC Greek excavations, 44 BC Roman city and eclectic other ruins. The area of Corinth flourished under a colony of soldiers sent by Julius Caesar in the 1st Century, housing at one time a Christian basilica, the start lines of a Greek racetrack, a sacred spring and an elaborate Roman fountain—all still viewable. Corinth was the site of one of the earliest Christian churches in Europe and the recipient of 2 letters from the Apostle Paul. On your travels to and from Corinth you’ll cross the famous 4-mile Corinth Canal, connecting the Ionian and Aegean Seas, which was conceived in ancient Roman times.
