Who were medieval knights?

Medieval knights lived in parts of Europe hundreds of years ago .

They wore heavy armor , carried swords , and rode horses into battles .

There were many wars at that time . Knights fought for their kings or another ruler .

Who was the first knight? The first knights of the Middle Ages was Charlemagne,

the King of the Franks, in the 700s. In order to fight battles across his large empire,

Charlemagne began to use soldiers on horseback. These soldiers became a very important part of his

army.

Becoming a knight Many boys became knights because their

fathers were knights. They started working as a page then squire

and at the end a knight.

pageWhen a boy, is seven years old or decided that he wanted to become a knight, He would go to live in the household of a knight. There he would serve the knight as a page. As a young page he basically was a servant for the knight, performing tasks such as serving meals, cleaning his clothes, and carrying messages. While working for the knight's household, the page learned the proper way to behave and good manners. The page also began to train how to fight. He would practice with other pages using wooden shields and swords. He also would start to learn how to ride a horse using no hands and carrying a lance.

squireWhen a page was 14 years old, he could become a squire. A squire had a different set of duties. They had to teach the pages, but they also had to wait on the knights. They continued their training in battle, but also had a specific knight who completed their training. As a squire you went into battle with the knight and fought at his side. This was where you proved if you had the ability to be a knight. Once you had proved your ability, you were made a knight.

Do u know?If a knights armor or weapons were broke, the squire had to run out

into the battle with new ones .

knights practicing fighting Knights practiced fighting when they were not at the

wars. They fought one another and fought in tournaments. Jousting was when two knights rode their horses toward

each other. They tried to drop each other from their horses with

lances. Knights also fought in pretend battle at tournaments. Many people can to watch these fight. It was just a game, but the knights could be very rough,

sometimes knights died.

Do u know?Sometimes knights were killed or badly hurt when they jousted.

Weapons and armor of knights The most important items to a knight were his armor, weapons, and his

war horse. These three items were very expensive, only the wealthy could afford to be

knights. During the Middle Ages knights wore heavy armor made of metal. There

were two main kinds of armor and some several types of weapons such as, chain mail and plate armor, and the weapons are  lance which knights fought on horseback and used a lance, and they also used small draggers like War hammer, axes, and mace.

Knights horses A knight could not go to war without his horse. A good war horse coat a lot of money. They had to be fit and strong to carry a knight

in heavy armor.

Do u know?Some knights trained their horses to kick on their enemies.

End of the medieval knights. Knights were the fiercest fighters in Europe for

hundreds of year. The life changed and wars became different. People stopped fighting in armor with swords and

started using cannons. These days we only see knights in films and stories.
