The TD Toronto Jazz Festival will go beyond the music with programming to include workshops, master classes, mentorship and a number of hands-‐on programs in support of emerging artists and jazz fans of all ages. The Big Band Slam invites four Greater Toronto Area high school big bands to perform at The Rex Jazz & Blues Bar on Tuesday, June 26, 2-‐5pm. This is not a competition but is instead, a chance to showcase some of the outstanding music being made by high school students across the city. Acclaimed Canadian trombonist, Al Kay will moderate the Slam and will also perform one song with each ensemble. The Youth Jazz Showcase gives some exceptional young musicians the chance to show it all off on Thursday, June 28, 11am -‐ 2pm at The Rex Jazz & Blues Bar. Confirmed performers for the 2012 Showcase are the Youth Jazz in the City Honour Combo A and from Boston’s Berklee College of Music, the Mario Castro Quintet. Jazz for the Teach this year expands to two sessions: one focusing on small group settings and one focusing on big bands. Led by acclaimed jazz educators and geared towards middle and high school music teachers looking to hone their jazz teaching skills, each session will cover a variety of topics and will provide hands-‐on opportunities for participants. The Artistic Director’s Guide to Jazz seeks to go “beyond the bio”, providing an in-‐depth personal look at some of the artists performing in the 2012 TD Toronto Jazz Festival. Each week, Artistic Director Josh Grossman details what makes an artist great through personal anecdotes, video clips and more. The TDJ News Corps is an initiative geared towards post-‐secondary students who are interested in writing about jazz. Successful applicants to the TDJ News Corp program will be given full media accreditation for the festival, granting them unprecedented access to the festival -‐ attending and reviewing concerts for free, interviewing artists and experiencing the festival from behind-‐the-‐scenes. In
addition, TDJ News Corp members are assigned a mentor – an experienced music journalist. Groove & Graffiti is a two-‐day workshop for local area high schools where students are taught the history, relevance and unique expressions of graffiti used within the proper context. Now in it’s 9th year, Groove & Graffiti creatively combines the inspirational side of art and the inspiration (and improvisational) side of jazz. Generously sponsored by TD, this program is led by top local aerosol artists Elicser and Mediah, offering educational and instructional components while giving students the opportunity to create their own canvas. Get up close and personal with industry insiders and musicians as part of the Ken Page Memorial Workshops held daily at Nathan Phillips Square. Free to the general public, discussions are moderated by current Artistic Director Josh Grossman and past Festival Artistic Director, Jim Galloway as they focus on a variety of topics. guitar hero to his legion of dedicated followers for always keeping it lyrical and emotionally gripping. This will be a solo performance. To purchase tickets online -‐ http://bit.ly/x82xQr Roy Hargrove’s RH Factor With Special Guest Roberta Gambarini – Monday, June 25, Mainstage Marquee, Nathan Phillips Square: Whether it is straight ahead swingin’ or the funky underground, Roy Hargrove’s distinctive trumpet remains at the heart of the music. Hargrove’s hip-‐hop/jazz collective, The RH Factor, returns to Toronto after a seven-‐year hiatus. With an incredible band behind him, Hargrove’s blistering solos are fused with urban grooves, hip-‐hop, funk and R&B to create up-‐to-‐the-‐minute contemporary jazz that would have Miles Davis smiling. To purchase tickets online -‐ http://bit.ly/A1oEdc Karrin Allyson – Sunday, June 24, Enwave Theatre, Harbourfront Centre: Described as a musician’s musician, singer and pianist Karrin Allyson moves with ease and authority from the Great American Songbook of Gershwin and Porter to the Great American Jazz Songbook of Miles and Dizzy. Her body of work, documented in thirteen critically acclaimed CDs, is best described as utter musical fearlessness and is “the stuff shivers are made of” (Washington Post). To purchase tickets online -‐ http://bit.ly/x3a2St Nellie McKay / Becca Stevens – Saturday, June 30, Horseshoe Tavern When an artist draws comparisons to both Doris Day and Eminem, with a touch of Billie Holiday thrown in for good measure, the music can only be described as distinctive and impressively unorthodox. Singer, songwriter Nellie McKay is part cabaret, part sparkly pop but what lies underneath is a wit that cuts and a sharply tuned social conscience.
The New York Times called Becca Stevens’ debut album, “a best kept-‐secret” that was “impressively absorbing.” As a singer/songwriter of enormous talent, Stevens’ music expands and blurs the boundaries of folk, jazz and pop, all the while engaging listeners through keen poetic observation, rich musical language and beguiling singing. To purchase tickets online -‐ http://bit.ly/zh2IO7 The complete line-‐up of the TD Toronto Jazz Festival will be announced later this spring.

With a rich tradition of presenting the young lions, the jazz greats and tomorrow’s rising stars, the Festival has woven its way into the very fabric of Toronto and become the sound of the city. Since its inception, the Festival has hosted over 25,000 artists; contributed over $420 million to the GTA economy; welcomed over 8.5 million people to the Festival; and presented over 1,900 free public concerts. The Festival has drawn some of the biggest names in jazz over the years including internationally renowned artists such as Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan, Dizzy Gillespie, Cab Calloway, Sonny Rollins, Ray Charles, Sun Ra, Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, Dr. John, Dave Brubeck, Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson, McCoy Tyner, Harry Connick Jr., Etta James, Diana Krall, Pat Metheny, Jane Bunnett, Roy Hargrove, Keith Jarrett, Wynton Marsalis, and many more.
