Institutional AccomplishmentsTitle III: Strengthening InstitutionsThe Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) acknowledges the fine work of the following faculty who served as Coaches and Assistant Coaches in the College’s first Learning to Learn Institute for incoming freshmen held in August 2012: Deborah Ceppaglia, Dr. Jadwiga (Hettie) Domino, Dr. K. Patrick Fazioli, Dr. Brenda Fredette, Courtney Grim, Lisa Marsherall, Dr. Timothy McCorry, Dr. Paul Piciulo, Samantha Purpora, Dr. Stephanie Westerman and Andrew Yeager.

The OAA thanks the following faculty and professional staff for their ongoing contributions to institutional efforts to place first-time students as accurately as possible in reading, mathematics, and writing courses to ensure their academic success: Douglas Anderson, Claudia Conway, Dr. Hettie Domino, Erika Hamann, Dr. Mary Louise Hill, Dr. Daniel Kotzin, Matthew Kreib, Dr. Elizabeth Lucyszyn, Dr. Vochita Mihai, Dr. Theodore Pelton, Emily Ryan-Radder, and Cheryl Twardowski.

These same individuals deserve further recognition for spearheading program review efforts designed to renew each first-year reading, mathematics, and writing course and to improve the alignment and coherence between the sequences of math and writing courses.

The OAA likewise recognizes the ongoing contributions of faculty and staff on the Title III Mentoring Design Team: Deborah Ceppaglia, Carol Cullinan, Lisa Marsherall, Debra McLoughlin, Dr. Anne Pfohl and Valerie Macer. They continue to work on the design, implementation, and evaluation of pilot freshman student mentoring efforts.

The OAA would also like to acknowledge the commitment to student success and retention of the many faculty and staff who have implemented the pilot project.

Title IV: Student Support Services Grant (TRiO SSS)Thanks to Medaille’s dedicated faculty for their continued support of the Title IV, TRiO Student Support Services Grant. The Title IV Grant provides support services for 200 low-income, first-generation students and students with disabilities working toward baccalaureate degrees at Medaille. Faculty members are key to the TRiO Program’s efforts to retain and graduate eligible students, the effectiveness of which is apparent in TRiO’s retention and good academic standing rates—84 percent and 86.p erecent respectively for the 2011-2012 academic year. At last spring’s annual TRiO Achievement Celebration, the following faculty members were nominated by TRiO students for Faculty Mentor of the Year: James Brace, Claudia Conway, Dr. Jadwiga Domino, Dr. Gerald Erion, Dr. Jeffrey Faunce, Timothy Maggio, Dr. Glenn Morrow, Dr. Anne Pfohl, Dr. Nancy Pugh, Dr. Todd Riniolo, Dr. Ross Runfola, Dr. Ilze Stankevics and Dr. Stephanie Westerman. Claudia Conway was the recipient of this award and Dr. Gerald Erion was recognized for the role he played in the undergraduate success of our 2012 TRiO Alumna of the Year. Thank you all so much for the time and energy you devote to our students. We look forward to seeing many of you at this year’s celebration!

Medaille College - Riverside High School PartnershipSeveral Medaille faculty have been instrumental in our work with Riverside High School: Dr. Michael Lillis, William Weeks, and Phillip Wiggle serve on the Riverside High School Advisory Board; Dr. Brenda Fredette and her students are working with chemistry classes at the high school; and Dr. Jeffrey Faunce and his students are also involved with classes at Riverside.

Northwest Buffalo Community CenterThanks to the following faculty for their collaborations at the Center: Dr. Michael Lillis and the ENACTUS student group for their financial literacy workshops; Claudia Conway for supporting the involvement of the Future Teachers Club; and Education faculty member Julie Eldridge for her work with literacy programming.

Child Care Access Means Parents In School Grant (CCAMPIS)Thank you to Claudia Conway for continuing to support CCAMPIS participants. The CCAMPIS Program is a federally-funded program that supports participation of low-income parents in post-secondary education by assisting with child care services. Medaille’s grant, directed by Amanda Sauter of TRIO Student Support Services, was increased to over $15,000 for the second year in a row. Funds are used primarily as subsidies to offset the cost of child care for participants, enabling them to attend classes and be successful in their academic endeavors, and to encourage attendance of educational workshops on topics related to parenting, academic skills and financial literacy.

Project EQUIP and the Oishei Foundation GrantThank you to the entire Medaille faculty for the commitment and energy devoted to Project EQUIP over the past three years. During the three years of grant funding from the Oishei Foundation, the College has continued to develop curricular and co-curricular projects that advance its commitment to preparing students for successful careers and civically engaged lives.

These efforts have benefitted from genuine collaboration and broad participation of faculty from across all departments. These efforts also have benefitted from outstanding leadership provided by the Project EQUIP Steering Group. Over the last three years, the membership of the Steering Group has included Bridget Brace-MacDonald, Dr. Craig Centrie, Deborah Ceppaglia, Carol Cullinan, Dr. Gerald Erion, Courtney Grim, Dr. Brad Hollingshead, Dr. Richard Jacob, Dr. Daniel Kotzin, Dr. Norman Muir, and Andrew Yeager. Through their leadership, the College has strengthened its infrastructure to support the active, engaged learning at the heart of Project EQUIP, particularly through the development of the Center for Community-Based Learning, and has accomplished the curricular and pedagogical goals that make Project EQUIP distinctive. Additionally, the Project EQUIP Steering Group continued to collaborate with the Faculty Development Committee to conduct bi-annual faculty development events. Both events this year were highly successful. The summer event featured Dr. Marilyn Kurata, a national leader in designing capstone experiences, as well as workshops facilitated by Deborah Ceppaglia, Erika Hamann, Dr. Daniel Kotzin, Bridgette Slavin, and Andrew Yeager. The winter event featured workshops on assessing the College’s Essential Learning Outcomes. These workshops produced lively discussions about student learning and were facilitated excellently by Dr. Alan Bigelow, Bridget Brace-MacDonald, Deborah Ceppaglia, Dr. Gerald Erion, Dr. Mary Louise Hill, Dr. Daniel Kotzin, Mark Lavatelli and Andrew Yeager.


Lastly, the progress that has been made on Project EQUIP has benefitted tremendously from the 19 faculty members who have completed the Western New York Service Learning Coalition Faculty Fellows Program: Doug Anderson, Dr. Terri Borchers, Dr. Matthew Bowker, James Brace, Dr. Elaine Correa, Dr. Jadwiga Domino, Dr. K. Patrick Fazioli, Courtney Grim, Dr. Mary Louise Hill, Dr. Richard Jacob, Mark Lavatelli, Valerie Macer, Dr. Timothy McCorry, Dr. Vochita Mihai, Dr. Anne Pfhol, Bridgette Slavin, Dr. Marianne Sullivan, Dr. Alice Villaseñor, and Andrew Yeager. Through Project EQUIP funds, Medaille hosted the Fellows Program in 2012.

Medaille Online Experience (MOE)Because of the dedication and hard work of the SAGE faculty, the Medaille Online Experience was able to expand to ten fully online degrees this past year. These include: Associate of Science in General Studies, Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Business Administration in Information Systems, Bachelor of Professional Studies in Health Information Administration, Bachelor of Science in Homeland Security, Bachelor of Science in General Studies, Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling, Master of Arts in Psychology, Master of Business Administration and Master of Organizational Leadership.

Full-time ALP faculty, including Lawrence Robinson, Susan Steffan, Dr. Marianne Sullivan, and William Weeks, have been instrumental in implementing the on ground ALP business courses into the online format. Faculty, including Dr. Kathryn Castle, Dr. Lorie Hildreth, Dr. Lynn Horne-Moyer, Dr. Keith Klostermann, and Dr. Deborah Legge, have been working on developing online courses for the Master of Arts in Psychology and Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling programs.

Jonas Patricko is now the Program Director of the BBA IS program, which is graduating its first online cohorts this May 2013.

Steven MacMartin, Program Director of the BS in Homeland Security program, has been instrumental in putting together the Homeland Security Lecture series, with a number of prominent speakers actively engaged in the Homeland Security field speaking to students, faculty and the community.

Teresa Reinhardt, the Program Director of the BPS in Health Information Administration program, has been instrumental in AHIMA Academic Program Design Workshop, and in working with CAHIIM on the accreditation process for the program. Dr. Glenn Morrow also developed a course for the HIA online program.

Barbabra Kurasch spearheaded the launch of the online faculty training courses, FAC 101. And a number of faculty listed above participated and provided reflective feedback that strengthened the training course for new faculty.

Cross-Border MedailleIn fall 2012, the Buffalo campus welcomed 16 new international transfer students from China and Korea through its partnership agreements with Dalian Maritime University (PRC), the Seoul National University of Science and Technology (SeoulTech), Kyungpook National University, and Catholic University of Daegu. Six students enrolled in the 2+2 dual-degree program in English with Dalian Maritime University and six in the 3+1 program with DMU. In addition, four students enrolled for the fall semester as exchange students, two from the Transportation Management College at DMU and two from our Korean partners.


In October 2012, Medaille hosted delegations from DMU and SeoulTech. DMU has agreed to expand our partnership beyond its School of Foreign Languages. In fall 2013, the College and DMU’s Transportation Management College (TMC) expect to pilot a 1+2+1 dual-degree program involving business administration students. TMC students will complete their sophomore and junior years in Buffalo. The Dean of International Affairs at SeoulTech is currently entertaining proposals for 2+2 and 3+1 agreements.

In 2012, two Medaille students completed internships and coursework in Korea as a result of college-brokered relationships. Business administration major Danielle Rollins spent five weeks in Yeongcheon City last summer completing an internship at City Hall with government officials and at the Shin Young Company, a major automotive supplier to Hyundai. Biology major Jackie Belenky spent the fall semester in Daegu, taking courses at Catholic University while also participating in an internship through the Korean government-sponsored Teaching and Learning in Korea (TaLK) program. Jackie taught English as part of an after-school program at one of the primary schools affiliated with the university.

In fall 2012, the College became a member of the China-US University School Alliance (CNA-USA), a network of over one hundred PRC high schools and about thirty US colleges and universities, including Wake Forest University, Colorado College, and Creighton University. Membership provides direct access to many of the top academic high schools and students in the PRC. The high schools offer advanced, Western-style programs (e.g., AP, IB, A Level) to students whose intent is to enroll in a US postsecondary institution. During an October promotion and recruitment trip, Dr. Norman Muir, Dean of the Undergraduate College, visited 18 schools in 11 cities.

Additional Grant FundingThanks to the efforts of Mary Ellen Mulvey, Try-It Distributing donated $16,000 to support tutoring and other support programs for students at Riverside High School as provided through Medaille’s Center for Entrepreneurship and Change there.

The George I. Alden Trust granted the College $60,000 and the Margaret L. Wendt Foundation granted another $75,000 for new laboratory equipment and technology. These investments will help the College realize the full potential of our excellent courses of science study and topflight faculty. With this new technology, students will gain even more hands-on, direct experience with concepts and procedures learned in class, adding to their knowledge and better preparing them for the workforce of tomorrow. It will also help motivate and increase science and math knowledge for Buffalo Public School students who benefit from the College’s science offerings through our partnership with the Science Firsthand Program at the Valley Community Association.

Self-Study Report and Site Visit for Decennial Reaccreditation by Middle StatesFrom March 3-6, 2013, Medaille hosted a site visit for its decennial reaccreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The team of peer evaluators who conducted the site visit reported that they found that the College met each of the fourteen Standards for Accreditation, and they also gave Medaille multiple commendations. The Office of Academic Affairs thanks the faculty, staff, administrators, students, and trustees who contributed to the Self-Study Report and to our highly successful site visit, with special thanks to members of the Self-Study Steering Committee who led the process over the past three years. The Committee was co-chaired by Barbara Kurasch and Dr. Brad Hollingshead, and membership included Jenifer Bavifard, Barbara Bilotta, Deborah Ceppaglia, Kari Costelloe, Amy DeKay, Dr. Susan Dunkle, Dr. Judith Horowitz, Dr. Douglas Howard, Pamela Jones, Dr. Daniel Kotzin, Mary Lindstrom, Patrick McDonald, and Karen McGrath.

Kelly Ahuna, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, School of Education

Dr. Ahuna presented a paper entitled “Using Self-Regulated Learning Methods to Increase Native American College Retention” at the National Symposium on Student Retention in New Orleans on October 30, 2012. The paper won the Institutional Research Leadership in Student Retention Award and a $1,000 prize.

Dr. Ahuna also co-presented two round table discussions at the NYSATE/NYACTE Conference in Albany on October 18-19, 2012. The presentations were entitled “Online Education: Considerations for Students, Instructors and Institutions” and “The Voices of Real Teachers: Reflecting on Contemporary Issues in the Teaching Profession.”

Faculty Accomplishments

Dr. Borchers presented “Making Service-Learning Work Across Disciplinary Boundaries in a Theme-Based Learning Community” at the Western New York Service Learning Coalition Conference at Niagara University on October 27, 2012. Dr. Borchers completed this presentation with Andrew Yeager to highlight their efforts to help students actualize essential learning outcomes in critical thinking, writing, and information literacy in a learning community course that emphasizes community safety, caring, justice, and democracy.

Dr. Borchers attended the National Summer Institute on Learning Communities, a week-long conference sponsored by the Washington Center for Improving Undergraduate Education in July 2012, with a team of Administrators and other Medaille colleagues to help create and sustain our efforts to help all students actualize essential learning outcomes and improve retention.

Ms. Cefaratti, along with Claudia Conway, presented Blended Instruction: Traditional In-Class Instruction Supported by Engaging Online Learning at the Association of Teacher Educators Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas in February 2012. Faculty Award:Care for Community InitiativeUnivera HealthMs. Cefaratti and Dr. Richard Jacob were awarded a $54,000 grant to fund the Healthy Child project. The initiative funds curriculum, equipment, and professional development for ten Bethel Head Start Centers in the Buffalo area.

Served as Director of the Reading Center, Chair of School of Education Advisory Board, member of the Faculty Development Committee, Freshman Read Initiative, and Academic Quality Programming Committee.

Coauthored Healthy Child Curriculum with Dr. Richard Jacob, physical fitness and nutrition curriculum for pre-school children.

Richard Jacob, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Business Department

Dr. Jacob has recently been appointed to the position of Volunteer Executive Chairman of the Coaches vs. Cancer Executive Council of Western New York. Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) that empowers coaches from all sports, their teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer. He was appointed in August 2012.

$54,000 Univera Healthcare GrantPartnering with Bethel Head Start, Inc. and Univera Healthcare, Dr. Jacob and colleague Michelle Cefaratti are co-authors of a pre-school physical activity curriculum called Healthy Child. As part of a three-year project, they will participate in the teacher training, development, and implementation of the curriculum in ten local Head Start child care centers.

Mark Lavatelli, Professor, Humanities Department

Professor Lavatelli’s painting, entitled Wound (2013. encaustic and collage on panel. 42” X 30”) won Best of Show at Big Orbit Gallery’s 22nd Annual Member’s Exhibition in Buffalo.

Lavatelli collaborated with the Buffalo Chamber Players to present “Schoenberg/Lavatelli: Pierrot Lunaire,” at the Buffalo Seminary on November 24, 2012. This included an exhibition of works of art interpreting each of Schoenberg’s 21 seminal compositions on the 100th anniversary of their premiere and projections accompanying the musical performance.

Lavatelli received a site-specific installation award at echo Art Fair, 701 Seneca St., Buffalo, July 6-8, 2013.

Lavatelli was elected to the Board of Directors of the Buffalo Society of Artists and was also elected Vice President for Exhibitions.

Mr. Robinson was the Lead Facilitator of the Opening Retreat for the Chautauqua Leadership Network’s Class of 2012 on February 23-25, 2012. He has led this experience for fifteen years.

Mr. Robinson designed and facilitated the workshop, “Imagine A Positive OD Network That Elevates Our Human Strengths - Appreciative Practices for Organizational Development” for the Organizational Development Network in Buffalo, New York, in April 2012.Mr. Robinson was honored with the “Leader of the Year Award - 2012,” at the 20th Annual Leadership Dinner for the Chautauqua Leadership Network in June 2012. He was acknowledged for “leading, connecting and nurturing” over 400 leaders in Chautauqua County since 1997.

Mr. Robinson was awarded a citation from the New York State Assembly in June 2012 for his work with the Chautauqua Leadership Network. This honor “acknowledges the significant milestones in the distinguished careers of exemplary individuals whose dedication and achievement have been instrumental in developing character and excellence in the citizens of New York State.”

Mr. Robinson was the Team Captain for “Missy’s Extra Milers,” in the Ride for Roswell, June 2012. The team was one of the top 25 fundraising teams of over 400 teams that participated in the event.

Mr. Robinson designed and facilitated seminars for the Management Development Program at M&T Bank in Buffalo, New York, between September and November 2012. These included “Project Team,” “Project Kickoff” and “Systems Thinking/Systems Changing.”

Mr. Robinson designed and facilitated the session, “Appreciative Practices for Learning Communities,” for the Atlantic Center for Learning Communities in Hartford, Connecticut, in October 2012.

Mr. Robinson co-facilitated the “Foundations of Appreciative Inquiry” workshop for the Corporation for Positive Change, in Holyoak, Massachusetts, in November 2012.

Mr. Robinson designed and facilitated the workshop, “Leading Appreciatively,” for the Chautauqua Leadership Network at the Chautauqua Institution in November 2012.

Mr. Robinson facilitated planning and management development retreats for Building Control Systems, Nussbaumer & Clark, and St. Mary’s School during 2012.

Mr. Robinson completed a three-year appointment to the Board of Directors of Casting For Recovery, a national non-profit organization providing support for breast cancer survivors headquartered in Manchester, Vermont. He was reappointed to another three-year term beginning in January 2013.

Mr. Robinson was awarded the “Life Saver” Award by the AED Superstore for helping to save a life while volunteering on the Holimont Ski Patrol in December 2012. In addition, he is being nominated for a Merit Award from the National Ski Patrol for his involvement in this event.

Dr. Villaseñor was invited to present her archival research — “Introducing Catherine A. Hubback: Jane Austen’s (Other) Niece” — at the Annual Jane Austen Birthday Luncheon of the Rochester Region of the Jane Austen Society of North America, Chaterbox Club, Rochester, New York, December 2012.

Dr. Villaseñor continues to serve her three-year term of service as a Directly Elected Board Member of the Jane Austen Society of North America. She continues her service on the International Visitor Committee, which she also began chairing in December 2012. Moreover, she now serves as a founding member of the newly created Outreach Committee.

Dr. Villaseñor currently serves Medaille College as an elected member of the Academic Quality Committee and as a member of the Faculty Mentoring Committee. She recently completed a year of service on the Fall 2012 Freshman Read Committee. In Spring 2012, she served as a member (committee of four) of an ad hoc committee to revise the Humanities Department’s ENG 110 course outline. She finished her one-year term as a sabbatical-year replacement on the Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Mini-Grants Review Committee in May 2012.


Stephanie Westerman D.V.M., Associate Professor, Veterinary Technology Department

Red Cross Certified Teacher Trainer in Pet First Aid - Created an elective course not only teaching Pet First Aid, but training students to be able to teach Red Cross Certified Pet First Aid courses to the community. Helped facilitate the liaison between Medaille College and the local Red Cross.

Learning to Learn Camp - Trained by Pacific Crest to facilitate Learning to Learn Camps. Attended week-long intensive Learning to Learn Camp at Lincoln University, Missouri learning to coach, then was Assistant Facilitator at Medaille College’s Learning to Learn Camp in August 2012.

Dr. Westerman was a guest in May 2012 on Winging It, a live TV show, discussing veterinary careers and pet health.
