BIC Susquehanna Conference.

McBIC Staffing Update

Over the past several years our church has experienced significant staff transitions andthat pattern continued in 2016. Transitions we walked through in 2016 included: MitchWirth’s resignation as Interim Pastor of Young Adults; Marj Swartz joining our staff asour Facility Supervisor; the addition of Kyle Abel as our part-time Pastor of MiddleSchool Ministry; and, Jason Kleese concluding his time with us as our Senior HighPastor.

As our 2016 Church Council Meeting approached, we were proposing hiring a full-timepastor of Middle School Students, but during the Council Meeting we had somediscussion around staffing needs we had in middle school ministry, office support andyoung adult ministries. The council gave their consent for us to address these staffingneeds as we saw fit, provided that we were able to staff within the approved personnelportion of our budget. As our staff and church board discussed our needs followingcouncil, we concluded that we would be best served in the short term, by solidifying ouroffice support staff. Shortly after that we posted the position of Facility Supervisor andproceeded to hire Marj Swartz in April. After a summer internship with us, in Septemberwe hired Kyle Abel at fifteen hours a week as our part-time Pastor of Middle Schoolstudents.

At present, we’re in the midst of a search for a Pastor of Senior High Students (3/4 time)and Young Adults (1/4 time). As we fill that position, while this position will give part-time leadership to young adults, I’ll feel good about once again being able to givepastoral leadership to this important population in our church.

As I processed our staffing needs with our church board and staff throughout the fall andinto 2017, we’ve made the decision to hire a full-time Pastor of Middle School Studentsbeginning this summer. Growth has occurred among our middle school and senior highstudents over the past several years since we split those two ministries and we believethat providing staffing for each of these ministries will result in greater growth among ourteens and families with teen aged children. Pending the approval of our 2017 budget—which includes a full-time Middle School Pastor position beginning this summer—weplan to post the position and begin accepting resumes.

As you’ll see in your 2017 budget, our personnel costs from 2016 to 2017 were minimal.This is due to the fact that we won’t hire a Pastor of Senior High Students and YoungAdults until at least April and our Middle School Pastor position won’t transition to full-time until June. The growth of our staff will be fully realized in our 2018 budget.

I’m encouraged by the additions we’ve made to our staff in 2016 and I look forward tobeing fully staffed as we move into the fall of 2018. I feel good about the way we’vebeen able to address the staffing needs we identified at last year’s council meeting in theareas of staff support, middle school ministry and young adults.
