Team Concept Zero 2011 2

Mission Statement

Team Concept Zero is a team of six mechanical engineers from Polytechnic Institute

of NYU who are undertaking the challenge of designing and constructing a fuel

efficient vehicle. This vehicle will compete in the Shell Eco-marathon against teams

from all over the country to see who has created the most energy efficient vehicle.

Team Concept Zero will be competing in the Urban Concept category of the

competition. The rules and regulations of this category will guide the vehicle toward

becoming a road ready automobile, rather than a conceptual prototype.

Shell Eco Marathon

Shell hosts the Eco-marathon throughout the world. Teams compete in the Americas,

Asia, and Europe; but wherever the Eco-marathon is held, teams are pushed to

design a vehicle that will travel the furthest using the least amount of fuel. The Shell

Eco-marathon is separated into two categories: Prototype designs and Urban Concept

designs. Team Concept Zero will be creating an Urban Concept, gasoline powered

vehicle that will maximize its distance traveled while minimizing the gasoline

consumed.

Efficiency has always been a very important aspect of modern automobile design.

With the current trends in energy cost and ecological awareness, it is especially

important to engineer automobiles with efficiency in mind. In this way, the Shell Eco-

marathon’s goal is of global importance. By judging vehicles on a rating of kilometers

pet kilojoules, the competition represents a level playing field for vehicles

independent of their propulsion systems - whether internal combustion, plug-in

electric, solar, or hydrogen fuel cell.

Concept Zero History

In 2010, Polytechnic Institute of NYU’s Team Concept Zero competed for the first

time in the Shell Eco-marathon. The vehicle consisted of a chassis and body

constructed entirely of carbon fiber and was propelled by a small 1.1 horsepower

engine sourced from a weed trimmer. This led to the vehicle being the lightest in the

Urban Concept class and obtaining a rating of 144 miles per gallon. The vehicle

placed fourth overall in the competition. Now, the 2011 Team Concept Zero is

confident that there is significant room for improvement, and has made it their goal

to modify and optimize the vehicle.

Team Concept Zero plans on developing upon the foundation built by the previous

Team Concept Zero. In this manner, the team can recycle as many parts as possible

as a nod to the ecological theme of the competition. This will also allow the team to

lower its costs and increase the time available for optimization.

Team Concept Zero has a goal of 500 mpg. Last year’s Urban Concept class winner

won with a 420.7 miles per gallon rating. With the current car achieving 144 mpg,

the team is confident that 500 mpg will not be very difficult to reach with proper

planning and a rigorous work schedule. At this time, our current conceptual designincludes a better drive-train and transmission which will include a clutch and gear-

train system (systems missing from last year’s 144 mpg run) allowing for higher fuel

efficiency. The engineers of Team Concept Zero also plan on implementing an

improved braking system in which there is a possibility for regenerative braking.

Such a system will allow the car to propel itself on energy generated during braking,

further decreasing its dependence on gasoline.

Decreased weight and an advanced fuel monitoring system will provide enhanced

accuracy in measuring fuel consumption. Whereas the existing car did place lightest

in its class, there are areas for further weight-trimming. The team will perform

structural computer simulations to determine the lowest weight possible while

retaining a high structural rigidity.

Team Concept Zero will attempt to recycle parts from last year’s vehicle where

possible. Current budget projections to replace or modify existing components are as

follows:

Item/Task:

  Chassis/Body restoration

o  Removal of all logos, grinding/weight reduction, repainting, polishing,

application of all logos   Engine & drivetrain components

o  New engine, clutch, transmission

The main source of funding for Team Concept Zero will come from generous sponsors. With

your support, Team Concept Zero will be able to make our vision for an eco-friendly vehicle a

reality. Below is a list of sponsorship levels from which donors may choose from. Any

sponsorship amount will result in the donor to gain advertising exposure throughout the

duration of the project. Sponsors will be prominently featured on the team website and on

the vehicle itself. They will also be mentioned in all reports, publications, and project

presentations. Sponsors will be invited to meet the team and witness the unveiling of the

vehicle.

Time Warner

Time Warner Cable will focus on inspiring young people to build the STEM skills needed to become the problem solvers of tomorrow. “This is the next iteration of Time Warner Cable’s long-standing commitment to the young people in ourcommunities. This new initiative will connect youth to after-school opportunities that can help instill a sense of wonder anddiscovery in young minds. We hope this will inspire a lifelong exploration of science and technology and believe thisinitiative will make a meaningful, measurable difference in our communities,”

Nordan started as a private Indy Car effort in 1989 and then opened to the public a year later. They continue to supplynumerous teams with the latest technological advances in lightweight and high quality composites. “Prototyping” one-offsand production runs, from fiberglass to carbon fiber, Nordan is capable of producing high quality composite components inan extremely cost effective manner. Components requiring the utmost in structural integrity are processed in our onsite
