    The Ridgewood Residence represents a signifi cant intervention and re-imagining of a 1963 home designed by noted regional Texas architect A. D. Stenger. Having undergone numerous alterations over fi ve decades, the project demanded a dual emphasis on conceptual preservation and careful integration of approximately 1300 square feet of new program, all within the signifcant constraints of strict City of Austin tree protection regulations. Major elements include a new master suite wing, an outboard stairwell volume, and reconfi guration of living areas to accommodate a more fl uid spatial composition and a raised ceiling height.

    The Hancock Residence, or the Mullet House, connects the old and new in the historic Clarksville neighborhood of Austin, Texas. Like the haircut, the house is a trimmed one-story volume at the entry that lets loose in the back with a 3-story faade due to a combination of both topographic variation and roof slope. Initially a remodel, structural deficiencies in the existing house demanded a total rebuild, which in turn provided opportunities for salvaging brick, wood, and the memory of the original homes formal qualities. The project will begin construction in winter 2014.

    It could be said that the rise of Modernism siphoned attention away from much of what is critical in good architecture and instead became distracted with its own myriad polemics. This new focus came with a costnamely attention to the room per se. This project refocuses architectures attention back to the room in the context of the varied program of the university club, once a touchstone of great rooms as a whole.

    Given the opportunity to work with an unparalleled sitedirectly east of the Texas Governors Mansion and south of the Texas State Capitolwe sought to combine sensitivity and attention to all the surrounding elements with a focus on elevational conditions and their accompanying neighborhood ramifi cations. The building at once commands authority through massthin, monumental coursing of Texas limestoneand softens its exterior through careful detailingwood, corten steel. Exterior terraces subtly co-opt the surrounding views to the utmost extent while retaining privacy and intimacy within.

    The University Clubs program is varied, but the project seeks to unify disparate elements through surface continuity, juxtaposing exterior stone with softened wood detailing that begins with the repetitive and rhythmic exterior wood screens at hotel balconies and culminates in the great room with its profusion of wood and glass. Housed within a transparent glass skin with diffused light from above, the rooms innermost wood shell interior acts as a building within a building within a buildinga delicate screen set within a stone basin. A surrounding hotel corridor exploits this condition, looking inward to the clubs centerpiece.

    The hidden Sacred Wood shelters the communitys future additional hermitages and introduces a ritual procession into the process of entering extended periods of contemplative seclusion, providing solitary access to the interior chapel of the Blessed Sacrament.

    Returning the adjacent gentle between the chapel and residenceonce a small vineyardto its historical role as a place of vegetal production, the Semplici will, like the Renaissance garden before it, produce fragrant herbs, fl owers, medicinal plants and, looking forward, a vineyard.

    With massive earthen walls forming thresholds and spatial transitions in an otherwise open landscape, the Secret Garden provides psychological and spiritual shelter amidst Prayer Towns exposed, rugged terrain.

    The Prayer Town Chapel is a 250-capacity chapel with an adjacent devotional chapel for a Catholic Franciscan religious community of approximately 40 sisters and a resident priest in Prayer Town, Texas, 45 miles northwest of Amarillo.

    The Franciscan order represents one of Catholicisms most austere religious orders, valuing simplicity and poverty above all else. For this reason, the Prayer Town Chapel incorporates simple and raw materials appropriate to the rugged character of the western Panhandle site, sourced locally where possible, including in situ soils and aggregate for the chapels rammed earth walls.

    Additional master planning includes expanded resident facilities, future off-the-grid hermitage prototypes, and an outdoor Way of the Cross linking the sites varied elements to the Chapel itself.

  • Casa Prieto Lopez, located within the Jardines del Pedregal development in Mexico City represents one of architect Luis Barragns most refi ned works and one of his most distilled compositions of light, color, and spacethe keystones of his long and infl uential career.

    With cooperation from the Prieto Lopez family, this project endeavors to re-envision the sprawling residential compound as an academic research institute and residency, with a library, housing, and congregation space that will breathe new life into a once residential, now quickly changing district.

    This interventions primary method is to retain and revitalize the homes original architectural elements, while countering them with a divergent, yet complementary architectural language. In addition, conversations with Eduardo Prieto Lopez unearthed intentions to build horse stables, now realized in the form of simple residences for visiting students, academics, artists, and architects.

  • With the feverish advent of new digital technologies propelling systems of information collection and digitization ever forward, predictions of the shape of the library to come can only speculate on the needs of the future. The University of Texas Main Library re-envisioned here asserts, quite literally, the central role of the digital within the larger system of university information aggregation, placing digital programs at the spatial heart of the building. All other programs including extensive analog collectionslook on at the digital core as if in awe. And yet, the digital is wholly dependent upon the analog, structurally, as the wheel is to the hub. The symbiotic relationship here proposes a fitting analogy for future considerations of the digital/analog dichotomythat the roots of informational systems, no matter how far they branch upward and outward, are ever-connected.

    The building operates through a relatively simple structural system of large, cast-in-place concrete piers capable of resisting moment forces, a structural circulation shear core, and thickened concrete floor plates, all working together to maximize open space. The envelope is sheathed in a multi-layer faade of curtain wall glazing and a steel rod scrim that varies in density by solar orientation, the southern exposure providing the most shading. The result is a graceful, yet functional system, both raw and elegant.

    The draped language of the steel continues within as a program-delineating element between the analog wheel of the traditional library emanating from the digital hub. The two are at once discrete, yet symbiotic. This relationship allows a greater sectional connection between inter-level programmatic elements, resulting in an open plan that transcends multiple levels.

  • The Faade Thermal Lab at the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture allows researchers to investigate the effects of thermal mass, glazing performance, faade architectural elements, and other building components on overall energy use.

    The facility consists of an identical pair of laboratories that simulate the spatial qualities of a typical office. The interior air temperature of each lab unit is controlled by an advanced air handling system that permits the precise measurement of the energy used to maintain interior conditions. Temperature, radiation, humidity, and other environmental conditions inside each lab are monitored using a reconfigurable network of sensors. The energy use of interior elementssuch as lighting, instrumentation, and computersare monitored and included in energy-use calculations. Energy flux

    resulting from ventilation air is also closely monitored.

    The result of this accurate measurement platform is the ability to measure changes in energy use resulting from different architectural or operational elements such as shading, thermal mass, fenestration, lighting, or ventilation strategies. Energy use associated with changes in one of the labs is compared with the control lab, and the effects of the changes calculated precisely.

    During my research assistantship, I oversaw the construction of Thermal Lab II and the development of its internal systems, as well as the daily operations and research of Thermal Lab I, with the collaboration of Steve Bourne, Ph.D. student in Civil, Architectural ,and Environmental Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin.

    With the increasing role of computational processes and rapid prototyping machinery in manufacturingand more importantly in the design process itselfthe concept of prototyping has proliferated throughout the design industries. This project seeks to exploit both mass production and mass customization through the process of prototyping and to engage both digital and analog methods as means of producing a full-scale, repeatable, and marketable product.

    The ultimate goal of the Stellatus module was to achieve a seeming complexity that

    belies a distilled and simple process. Through generating a single form and devising a simple process of three-dimensional manipulation, the module acquires a near-infinite number of forms. This result could only be reached through a denial of the posturing of digital-manipulation rhetoric and accepting the potential of simplicity for its own sake.

    The product is a modular lighting system of a single unit or an aggregate of forms of the consumers choosing, applicable to a range of architectural applications, both interior and exterior, and available

    in a variety of materialsconcrete, steel, aluminum, bronze, ceramic, and urethane, among them.

    Many digital and analogue processes were key to the design investigation of Stellatus. However, the final prototype relied principally on:
